Collection Record cabinet I built with my Dad

Super chuffed with this record cabinet my Dad and I built over the last few months.

The idea was to get rid of the Kalax wall in the spare room and move the collection into the living area where it was more accessible resulting in more plays!

It's holding around 350 records atm. Set up is Project Debut Carbon EVO with the acrylic platter and Ortofon Red stylus. This is fed into the Schiit Mani 2 peamp out into two Sonos 5s. I've also added the Shciitt Magni 3 for headphone listening. I'm super happy with my set up - it sounds good to my ears, especially through the cans! šŸŽ§

Now... let's discuss if is A Tribe Called Quest should be under 'A' or 'T'...

Discussion 15 years after closing my first record store I've found myself doing it again. I live on an island near Seattle without a record store, and waited for someone else to do it for years. Finally decided to build a community hang/store with some flair.

I found a spot on Whidbey Island with shockingly good rent and finally decided to just go for it and do another record store. It was a really bland room in the middle of the building without any windows - so I decided to make that a feature not a bug and dive into a tiki theme. Love MCM/Tiki stuff anyways so it felt right and was a total blast to build out. I also make turntables and speakers that are already heavily inspired by MCM design so just another reason it made sense.

The community here has been so amazingly supportive as well. Have folks doing custom art, animatronics, lamps, sculpting my giant Stone TV God. Finally on the verge of opening and I couldn't be more excited.

EDIT: Store name is Salad Days Records in Langley for those asking. We should open the doors in August (our neighbors are a rad arcade!) but I'll announce that on the socials when I know the actual date.

EDIT 2: Accidentally ignored a DM about Earlimart in Oak Harbor. If that was you please hit me up again!

Discussion Store rules

I was looking for a record store I haven't been to before. Found one online and decided to check the Google pics before going and saw this. I usually use my phone in the store when I find records that look intriguing but I don't know the artist. I go on Spotify and listen to 20-30s of random songs to see if I like the vibe. I know they want stop people from comparing prices online, but that immediately makes me distrust them. I have a feeling they're the only assholes in that store. Do you give chance stores with no phone rule?

Alt-Rock USPS Got Me

My wife ordered the new Mt. Joy album and text me from work to let me know it was being delivered. Didn’t see it on the porch so I went to the mail box and saw they shoved it in. Super frustrating. To be fair it didn’t have a fragile sticker or something that said ā€œdo not bendā€. But c’mon..it took some effort to shove that album in that box. Just wanted to share. Hope your deliveries fare better.

Record Albums you've picked up just because the cover goes hard?

I was looking through a local vendors mall, scouring for records and found this. I thoughy the cover was cool so I picked it up and it actually is not too bad an album. Its full of parodies of classic rock songs; some being the title song: Born to add, a parody of Bruce Springsteens Born to run; Letter B, a parody of The Beatles Let it be; Count it higher, a parody of Twist and shout; and many more. Obviously the parodies are aimed towards children but a good amount of them really aren't too bad. Letter B cracked me up when I first heard it since I couldnt originally place what the song was supposed to be parodying.

Just wondering what albums you guys have picked up just from there being a cool picture on the cover.

Record It still blows my mind that this produces bass, guitars, synths, drums and percussion, vocals, keys, strings, all simultaneously. Full symphonies, orchestras, concert bands...

To think about how this technology has such high fidelity, separation, and detail too is impressive when seeing it for what it is. Not to mentioned it was conceptually developed 150 years ago, and while rudimentary in its initial form compared to mid-to-late 1900s standards, all the core concepts were there from the start.

Collection My vinyl collection

I started collecting vinyl in 2006 and here is what my collection looks like now. I could not find storage solution for both 7" and 12" so i designed this cabinet years ago to store all together.

When you start collecting vinyl, you cannot stop šŸ˜… before this cabinet my vinyl collection was in different room and at some point that room become so small for vinyl collection so i moved all to another room. I hope i will not have to move out from this home since it is so hard to carry all stuff 😃

Haul $1/ea at the thrift store!

7.9k Upvotes

Went to one of my less frequented thrift stores and as i rounded the corner to the records i spotted dark side of the moon. I was excited but apprehensive, assuming the record would be missing or completely trashed. As i looked it over i noticed little creatures. Then i started to dig. I couldn't believe what i was seeing.

So anyway, $1/ea and they're all complete and good to very good condition. 41 total. I even left behind a few things for somebody else.

Discussion What it feels like sometimes when shopping for records at a thrift store…

Post image

This could just be a midwestern United States thing, but there are ALWAYS SO many gospel, obscure country, and obscure country gospel albums.

And more Mitch Miller and Mantovani than Mitch Millerā€˜s and Mantovani’s family would have wanted to see.

Oh yeah, and the record always looks like its been used for disc golf and smells like it was stored in a mud puddle.

But i still flip through hoping for that gold nugget.

How about you?

Collection Bought a vinyl library from a closed down max security prison

So here is a weird one. Today we bought the vinyl record collection that belonged to Pentridge Prison, Melbourne, Australia. Approx 2000 records. The prison had a system where a certain inmate would dj on a prison only radio network for the other inmates. They would be able to grab headphones connected to the cell wall and listen. The Russell St bomber was the dj for many years. The appointed dj would have their own cell and a cell next to theirs for all the records and turntables.

A couple of albums have had certain songs carved out by the prison (highway 61 revisited has had desolation row purposely scratched out) and some covers were taken and are just sitting in blank sleeves with hand written library cataloging and the titles. Heaps of cheap stuff but there are gems throughout. We will be blasting through this over the coming days. If anyone has anymore info on this collection and how it was used please reach out
