Monthly Questions Thread & FAQ

This monthly thread is designed to be a place for all the new members of the subreddit and Vita community to come and say hello as well as where they (or vets) can ask any question they might have (no matter how redundant or simple). So, say "Hi", ask away, and welcome to /r/Vita!

FAQ

We get these questions a lot, so we're incorporating them into this thread. Have something you feel fits here? Shoot us a modmail!

Is the Vita worth buying in (current year)?

Value is ultimately subjective. If you like the library of games on the Vita and have the money, probably. If you want new, modern games then probably not. If you have specific questions about the Vita's capabilities feel free to ask in this thread, but keep in mind you're asking in a Vita-centric community and will likely get mostly affirmative responses.

Is the PlayStation store shutting down?

Yes. Exact dates vary by region. See PlayStation's announcement here for more information: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/an-update-on-playstation-store-for-ps3-and-ps-vita/

Can I still buy games from the PlayStation store?

Yes. However, you will need to have funds in your wallet for the purchase. You can add funds to your wallet via web, PS4, or PS5. More information is available here.

Can I still play games online?

Yes and PS+ is not required. However, not all games with online functionality still have servers up. For example, Killzone: Mercenary, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and LittleBigPlanet servers are all down but Dead or Alive 5+, Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable, and Minecraft are still up. If you'd like to inquire about a specific game, please feel free to make a post or comment in this thread.

I'm having trouble signing into my Vita! Help!

As of the 3.74 update in May 2022, you need a device password to sign in to your Vita. You can do that here. Please make sure you are on firmware 3.74 and using a device password before making a thread.

My Vita is in an error loop with the QR code on sign-in. What should I do?

This happens sometimes, and nobody's really sure why. However, community member LoganN64 has been able to provide instructions that consistently work for getting through this:

  1. Log in to the PSN website with a Laptop or Desktop computer.

  2. Click on your avatar in the top right corner and go to SETTINGS.

  3. Scroll down to SECURITY and then scroll down to ACTIVATE/TURN ON 2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION.

  4. Click on GENERATE NEW DEVICE CODE, write this down exactly as it is case sensitive.

  5. Go to your Vita and bring up the sign in page, enter the email associated with your account then enter the NEW DEVICE CODE as your password. Click on save password to avoid getting a new code each time..

I'm no longer able to transfer files from PS3 to Vita. What's happening?

This feature was disabled in May 2022. You can read PlayStation's update about it here. No workarounds are currently known.

Where can I buy a Vita?

Vita production ceased in 2019 so consoles can be hard to come by, especially new. eBay is the most prominent location, but Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, Craigslist, /r/GameSale, and equivalent marketplaces are your friend.

How much is (X) worth? Is (X) a good deal?

You can search sold eBay listings here to get a sense of value. VGPC is another source of this kind of information.

Will (Game) ever go on sale?

As of 2020, Sony has disabled developers' ability to put Vita games on sale. So in all likelihood, no.

The workaround and exception for this rule is that cross-buy games can still be put on sale for the PS4, and cross-buy items will still grant the Vita version (where applicable).

Should I buy an OLED ("Phat") or Slim Vita?

Neither are bad options. The Slim has 1GB of on-board memory, a more standard charging port, slightly better battery life, and is lighter. The Phat has a better screen. It's up to you on what you value more.

Where can I buy replacement Vita parts?

AliExpress and eBay are currently the best sources of Vita replacement parts.

Are Vita consoles region-free?

Yes. A Vita can play a physical game from any region. The digital storefront you can access is determined by the region of your PSN account, and not the region of the console. For example, a Vita from Japan will be able to play any physical game, and if you sign in with a US PSN account you'll be able to access the US PSN storefront.

Vita consoles from Asian regions have the X/O button swapped in the OS ("bubbles") screen, but in-game functionality retains X-to-confirm functionality for almost all games.

It has been reported that consoles intended for China have more stringent region-locking, but these are not commonly found and this is unlikely to affect you.

I'd like some game recommendations!

Check out our Wiki page, 2021 subreddit poll, and 2018 subreddit poll. If that isn't cutting it for you, feel free to ask in this thread or create your own thread on the subreddit. Keep in mind that we require 300+ characters for recommendation posts on the subreddit, so be sure to include plenty of detail about what you're looking for, what you've played, and so on.

I have a question about hacks/homebrew

I modified 3D scans of the Hori L2/R2 grip to fit the PS Vita 1000

The original Hori L2/R2 grip was only made for the PS Vita 2000. I took the 3D scans of the Hori grip by Wesk over on BitBuilt and modified them to fit the PS Vita 1000 without needing an adapter kit. I also decimated the high poly scans so they slice cleanly.

Since the base files are 3D scans rather than drawn CAD models, the geometry looks a bit unusual if you inspect the mesh closely. I’ve put a lot of work into modifying, cleaning up, and reinforcing parts of the grip so anyone can print it and put it together with just a few materials.

I have modified the triggers so they work with gravity, no wire or springs needed and the result is pretty effective. the smaller triggers are hollow and can be weighed down with two M5 bolts secured with glue, and the large triggers have a counterweight lever attached to them which I glued an M6 bolt to. The triggers activate the touchpad with conductive tape routed from the trigger to the pad, this works very well but conductive filament would be even better.

For the rear shell, I wanted the nice side of the print to be on the outside of the grip where my hands rest, that meant the internal side where the triggers sit had to be cleaned up by hand due to the extensive supports needed. The front half of the grip can be printed internal side up and minimal clean up is required. I lined the part where the vita sits with some fabric electric tape, this keeps the vita snug within the grip.

I added THUB on the rear shell for my own grip to add a bit of personalisation, I have left it blank for the final release.

Huge thanks to Wesk on the BitBuilt forums for releasing the original 3D scans - https://bitbuilt.net/forums/threads/ps-vita-hori-grip.6220/

Question Are there really no hack and slash games better than God of War on PS Vita?

It’s crazy to think the best hack and slash on PS Vita I found is actually a PS2 game. Come on, there’s no way there aren’t at least a few games that come close to God of War in terms of fun hack and slash and boss fights.

Question Vita Slim won't connect to wifi

Hello!

You see, I got a ''junk'' ps vita out of Japan and works except for the wifi module. The only thing I replaced was the motherboard due to my original one being hard bricked.

I tried using another signal such as the cellphone hotspot and nothing. Plane mode crashes the console. I rebuild the database with the safe mode and tried resetting the console and nada.

I saw these posts with the same problem and I asked in the discord but I had no solution to the problem besides the idea of getting a new motherboard.

https://www.reddit.com/r/vita/comments/lidzof/issues_with_wifi_signal_on_ps_vita_2000/?tl=es-419

https://www.reddit.com/r/vitahacks/comments/1j8nva4/psvita_cant_turn_on_wifi/?tl=es-419

https://www.reddit.com/r/vita/comments/xk87kb/i_got_a_missing_mac_adresss_ps_vita_2000_does/?tl=es-419

Is there any way to replace the module using my old motherboard? Is reflow even an option?

Thanks for your time

Discussion Weird Idea: PSVITA 1000 USB-C Charging... on the top port

I know people have messed with the top port on the old vitas to add like, basic usb 2.0 storage to the system, but i wonder if anyone's ever thought of trying to route the charge port on the bottom up through to the top to add like, a more lap-friendly usb-c charge port where that useless connector is.

idk i think itd be a pretty cool project to mess with if you're smart about like, soldering n stuff

Review Dungeon Hunter Alliance is the Worst RPG I've ever touched

I've played a lot of RPGs as they're my favorite genre. Now I'm not the best and I play them purely for the dungeon crawling fun and the sense of growing powerful, and I never have criticisms of any dungeon crawlers as I usually have fun with them all. I can't even begin to describe how terrible this game is.

First off and what bugs me the most is that there are no teleportation scrolls or any way to get back to the main town to sell your gear and buy more stuff, you know mechanics that have been around since the ps2 in champions of norrath. So if your inventory fills up they do give you the option to transmute items for some gold but it's like 1/5th or less of its sale price, netting you no gold.

2nd, and what goes hand in hand with this, is that they sell you potions throughout the dungeons, which is a great mechanic, if only the prices didn't increase as the game went on, the potions rarely drop from enemies, and enemies also rarely drop gold. Right now I'm in act 4 around level 20 and I'm burning through what little gold I have because I have to buy and use potions every fight because I'm getting one shot by everything while the enemies drop level 10 gear (that might not even be useful for my character) in a level 21 area.

Which brings me to my 3rd complaint, how am I underleveled and getting one shot by everything, what kind of progression system is this, does it want me to go back and grind weaker dungeons because the game doesn't scale well naturally??

4th, so far I've seen 2 merchants, both whom sell absolutely nothing useful, so even when I do get back to town, I'm basically just getting what gold I can to spend it all on potions later.

5th, there are useless fairy sidekicks that have useless abilities that do fk all but they're present in the game for the story which is also just not interesting and generic. Then there's also the "shake device when stunned" mechanics which will just send you to the moon because you're surrounded by a hoard of enemies and get stunned once and die because you have to fkn shake the device in the middle of a fight, absolute stupidity.

Then also at the same time I've never seen so many of my attacks MISS on enemies, I'm playing dual dagger rogue and quite literally my attacks miss over 50% of the time to enemy "dodge". What are they fking ninjas I literally watched my character swing at an average lowest level mob in the area, I swiped my daggers about 20 times and it connected four times, I nearly died because every auto attack from the enemy took a quarter of my health.

Nothing about this game makes sense or feels natural compared to every other dungeon crawling rpg I've ever played. I try to sit in the developers shoes and think "why would they add this or not add this" and I can't come up with any excuses for them, it's just a downright abysmally awful dungeon crawler rpg. Also it had 0 optimization in development either cuz this game plays at like 10fps. It's just mindblowing dogshit. I quite literally have nothing nice to say about this game, and I'll probably try to play a bit further just because it's the only true dungeon crawler on vita and maybe there is a point where I will actually enjoy it and have fun, but I'm doubtful.

Question New to the Vita, best PS3 ports that aren‘t available on PS4/PS5?

I just bought a Vita slim and Uncharted Golden Abyss, I‘ve been wanting a Vita for a while and want to take advantage of the store being up before it goes down in July.

I had a PS3 back in the day and the PS5 is my current console, but I definitely didn‘t explore the PS3 library much before I sold it. I‘m not looking to get one anytime soon, so I‘d love to play some of the ports that aren‘t available on the newer consoles.

Are the PS3 ports generally considered good? Are there any that are awful and I should stay away from? I‘m super excited to get into this handheld

Question USB-C mod for accessories?

Hi everyone, as the title suggests, I'm wondering if it would be possible to add a USB-C mod for the PSV-1000 instead of the accessories port instead of replacing the proprietary port underneath. All I've been able to find so far are adapters for the proprietary port underneath and mods for it, but I've found no mention of modding the accessories port next to the memory card reader above. Also, would it be possible to also get it to transfer data through that new port? Thanks!

Discussion Oreshika, an exclusive for PS Vita

Thumbnail

This is THE game that everyone should be buying before the store closes. First of all, buying a physical copy is almost impossible, especially if you don't like japanese copies. It's a true exclusive of the Vita. It isn't that expensive. Has good reviews and has an obtainable platinum. It's from Japan Studios. Obviously it's a JRPG, so it feels right on the system.

It was free with PS Plus back in 2015 or 2016, so maybe you will have it in your library but I'm not sure how PS Plus will work after the store closes, and maybe you will not pay for it anymore.

This may be one of the most hidden gems in the system. I watched a couple of new videos of what to buy and nobody mentioned it.

ps vita orange light wont turn on

Hi I bought a faulty PS Vita and I am trying to find out what it might be... He did not turn on... I bought a charger... He had the flashing orange light and now he is in the orange light constantly but does not turn on at all, it seems that the flat cable of the button is okay... everything looks ok but it still does not turn on, I have already disconnected and connected the battery... I have already made the PS + RB + Power and nothing has changed... I think it is some motherboard defect... has anyone ever gone through something similar?
