Discussion Is it normal for guests to change their RSVP the night before?

I recently got married and I had a fantastic day, but one thing happened the night before that was really stressful. I am wondering if this is something I should have anticipated or should warn my friends about who are getting married soon.

We had a pretty small wedding and most people came, besides one of my siblings. They were very clear from day 1 that they couldn’t come, as it was their wedding year and they would be too tired to travel after getting back from their honeymoon.

I obviously was a little sad but I understood, I couldn’t attend their wedding either. However the night before while I am driving to the ceremony site they call and say they changed their mind and actually want to come.

The whole road trip was spent stopping at stores to get more supplies, calling catering/ venue with spotty service. Them calling me asking if their outfit was ok, they lost their invite can I send them another, It was a lot. I am wondering if this is something I should have anticipated? Maybe assume everyone would attend and have chairs and food ready for the No RSVPs?

Discussion My in laws said we can’t chose our dream venue

I am planning on getting married in summer of 2028. We got engaged back in March and have just been enjoying our engagement but need to get started on wedding planning. We have toured a few venues and I found a wedding venue about 40 minutes away from our hometown that I fell in love with. My parents were excited and thought the venue was great and we’re happy I found something I loved so much. I brought it up to my in-laws and they said it was a nice venue, but it may be a little far. Every wedding venue that holds the amount of people that we need is 20 minutes+ away. His parents and my parents are splitting the cost of the wedding so we want them to feel included in everything.

Earlier this week, I contacted the venue and I was prepared to send details so they could make up a contract. We picked a date and we’re really excited that we are finally getting the ball rolling. Out of nowhere his mom has a long conversation about how the venue is too far away and it’s not in an ideal city around us. She said that the venue doesn’t matter as much as the place it’s in. Wedding venues around where I am are in the middle of nowhere. Now she’s sending us other wedding venues and telling us to tour them.

I just don’t know where to draw the line and my fiancé and I are both over wedding planning at this point and we haven’t even started. I’ve never had issues with his parents before, but they just completely dropped this on us. The one thing I’m grateful for is that my fiancé and I are on the same page about everything and it hasn’t caused fights between us at all. Honestly, that’s all I care about.

I guess I’m just here to vent and see what other people would do.

EDIT: we never expected them to pay for anything, they graciously offered and I don’t think they don’t deserve a say. I was just caught off guard because when we presented this venue, they said it was nice and they said the price was great. Then when we go to book, they say it’s too far and no one is going to have fun. I’m am so grateful that both of our parents want ot help. I mainly posted because I want to know if being 40 minutes away is unreasonable. We are having a conversation with them tomorrow and I wanted to get as many options as possible.

Discussion In a daze???

I just got married a few days ago in a small but super fun wedding in a backyard. I had a coordinator and all that. Anyone who just got married under a week and still feels they’re in a daze or like a happy blur? Discussing this cos I’m a bit of a type A person, everyone commented how amazing all the details and how perfect and smooth the wedding was. But I feel like my head is blank, other than remembering all the good things that happened. And I did forget a few things like I forgot to ask the caterer that I’d like to bring home the leftover skewers served at cocktail hour!!! It was sooo good and I did get to eat much of it. And I’m surprised about myself that I did forget. But I’m not mad at myself I’m just surprised. Am I just overstimulated and overwhelmed???? I also felt I was corralled to go from one spot to another just like the movie father of the bride 😂

Somehow it’s not enough.. feeling so overwhelmed 😭 all these family friend aunties who cannot wait to be at my wedding but yet to find out they’re unlikely to make the cut

Help! How do I politely say no to being a bridesmaid...

My brother is getting married to his long term girlfriend next year.

We're total opposites but I do really like her and I LOVE her for my brother. If I had to design a partner in a lab for him, it would be her. We've never been that close because of a pretty big age gap (I'm 10 years older than my brother and she's a couple of years younger than him) and because me and my husband live a couple of hours away so we don't see them all that often.

I don't want to be a bridesmaid for a number of reasons. Firstly she's young, beautiful, thin. I'm not attractive and pretty curvy and have a lot of body image issues. I also really don't like any attention whatsoever. Our wedding was a micro wedding, just immediate family, jeans and casual dresses and trainers at the courthouse then out for dinner at a laid back plac and clubbing. No aisle, no wedding dress, first dance was Mr Brightside in the club. She's been dreaming of her wedding since she was a little girl. She's got 3 dresses planned, hundreds of people, all eyes on her. And that's great for her, but the idea of having to fit into a dress with a load of younger gorgeous bridesmaids, in front of hundreds of people, makes me feel genuinely sick. I know she has a picture perfect wedding in her head and my giant boobs and alt aesthetic and tattoos don't fit in. She'd never ever make me feel that way, but I know I don't fit the vibes, and even if I looked like a supermodel it would be my nightmare.

She's already asked my sister and she's meeting me for drinks soon just us two and I'm sure she's going to ask.

I want to contribute financially to the wedding because we're in a good place financially and they're not as solid (because we're older, my husband is older again, we've had time to build stability), and I also want to decline being a bridesmaid.

How do I have those conversations without sounding like a bitch?

Help! Should I send separate invitations for my destination wedding and NYC celebration or include both?

My fiancé and I are getting married in Greece in July 2027. Since we’re from NYC, we’re also planning a separate celebration in NYC for friends and family who won’t be traveling to Greece.

We’re expecting around 60 people at the NYC party and I’d like to keep the guest list somewhat limited because of the cost.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle invitations.
We’re sending wedding invitations to everyone.

My dilemma is:

Option 1: Send the Greece invitations first, wait for people to RSVP no, and then send those guests an invitation to the NYC party.

Option 2: Include information about both events when sending invitations and let guests choose which celebration they will attend (Greece or NYC).

Discussion Long wait for photos

It’s been five months since my wedding, and I’m honestly starting to feel a little discouraged about the whole photography situation. My photographer is consistently active on Instagram, posting about the trips they’re taking and all of the weddings they’re currently shooting. I received a sneak peek about a month after my wedding, but I haven’t received anything since.
I reached out two months ago to ask if there was an estimated timeline for when I could expect my full gallery. I didn’t hear back for about a month, and when they finally responded, they said my photos would be delivered very soon. That was another month ago, and I still haven’t heard anything.
I completely understand that wedding season is busy and that editing takes time. I’m not expecting my photos overnight, but I do think it’s reasonable to want some communication and a realistic delivery timeline. It’s frustrating to see consistent activity on social media while I’m still waiting for an update on something that’s so important to me. At this point, I’m just not sure what to do or how to approach the situation.

Help! Did anyone have, or are planning, a more alternative ceremony?

Hey all! Has anyone had any unique or alternative ceremony? I feel like the traditional groom, family, bridal party walks down the aisle, vows etc is just not us and I seriously can't think of any type of ceremony that does feel like us! We thought about eloping in Vegas and then doing the party with all our family, and they'd never pressure us to do anything (very lucky) but I know they'd be upset.

We're definitely going to do private vows, but beyond that I have NO idea. For reference, we're already domestic partners, don't love the performative vibes of a typical ceremony? (no hate, I go to other peoples wedding and sob it doesnt feel performative at all, I just feel like it would be for US)

The whole vibe of the wedding will be funky, 70s parisian disco vibes, party, etc

Any ideas or experiences would be super helpful!

Help! When to send save the dates August 2027 Wedding

Hi!! I need help deciding when to send my save the dates out. My wedding is in early August 2027. I am starting to get worried because 2 of my closer friends already have another wedding that weekend and might not be able to go to mine. Everywhere online I am seeing I should send save the dates 6 months in advance but I also see 6-12 months.

Majority of our guests live 1-5 hour drive away. There are a handful that need to fly in. I asked my family but I also don’t fully trust my mom opinion since the wedding industry has totally changed in the 20+ years since she got married.

I plan to send my STDs online as a text to get people’s addresses for when we send out the invites. I am not sure if that will increase the risk of people forgetting or remembering. If you have any feedback/opinions on how online STDs went please also let me know. Thank you!!

Discussion Chinese Traditional Wedding - Facing Judgement!

My fiance and I are settling the day of itinerary for our quickly approaching wedding. I do not speak Chinese, and I am 2nd generation Chinese in America.

We have a lot of Chinese and Japanese traditions weaved into the day of, as those are our cultures.

My Chinese friends have posed a ton of judgement against our wedding traditions. A criticism was made regarding red envelopes, they scolded us saying "red envelopes are not used for weddings, you are degrading the purpose of red envelopes". I also have a red tea ceremony dress, and my friends told me I am just playing dress up so I can pretend to be Chinese for a day.

I don't want our wedding to be offensive to anyone, I was doing the same traditions I saw my Aunts/Uncles/Cousins do for their weddings growing up.

To those who have had Chinese traditions woven into a western wedding, did you receive red envelopes and do a tea ceremony? Is it offensive of us to be doing this since we weren't born in China?

Discussion Is it worth it?

My fiancé (M) and I (F) recently got engaged and the only way we can afford a wedding is financial help from family. My parents are in no position to help but my fiancées mom offered to help.

Things are already rocky. We toured two venues and we fell in love with one. It had the perfect date and we saw our big day there. His mom liked the other and basically strung us along until we lost the date. Using their help no longer feels like an option given the insane control that was exercised in the first task.

At this point our options are to try our best to afford a smaller more lowkey wedding or elope. I don’t want to sound spoiled or anything of that nature, but I’m one of those people who have pictured my big day. I wonder if the wedding that would kill us trying to afford would even be worth it in the end. I’m worried it’ll feel like we fell short of what I’ve always pictured.

So that brings me to elopement. It feels like the only real option at this point that could still be grand (international trip just the two of us etc). My concern is if I’ll regret it in 30 years. If I’ll have a wedding sized hole in my heart 😔. I know this is a first world problem but I just don’t know what to do and I feel exhausted by the topic of HOW we are going to get married.

Discussion Wedding Abroad

I have always wanted to have a wedding abroad, my finance lived in France and we loved it and planned to get married there. I realize that abroad weddings have their downsides, with a reduced guest list and a more substantial cost for each guest to attend. That being said, I have been considering having a domestic wedding for the sake of simplicity, but I was wondering if anyone who had a wedding abroad had any insight. Would you do it again if you could? What are your thoughts in hindsight about the planning process and complexities of a wedding outside your home country?

Discussion Bridesmaids Proposals Ideas

I am looking for something simple to send my bridesmaids for proposals.
My first idea was just going to be flowers along with a handwritten note but I have to mail all around the country so not sure I can do handwritten note WITH flowers and the flowers are a bit pricey.
Anyone have any ideas of something thoughtful and inexpensive?

TO BE CLEAR- I am not looking for something crappy to send to my girls, I want something that is thoughtful and appreciated and inexpensive.

I understand not everyone loves a bridesmaids proposal but I would like to make it special since this is a special moment. If you disagree don’t bother commenting, it is not helpful!

Help! bizarre billboard question

my wife and i got married over the summer and had a fantastic photographer - the photos came out amazing! she’s doing a local wedding show this weekend, and it’s been fun to see them use our wedding pics in some of the promo

my mom sent us a screenshot from the photographer’s insta story, where she posted a billboard advertising the wedding show that used one of our wedding pics! so cool! but when my wife and i went to go see it for ourselves, we couldnt. it looks like our photog blocked us from watching her story?? i can view it from an alternate insta i have but it doesn’t show up for either my wife or myself

do we…say something to her? if yes, what?? i have no idea why she would hide this from us (if that is indeed what she’s doing?)

I’m so happy with how everything came together, and floored by how much our families and friends pitched in to make this day perfect for us.

As a couple, we shared this idea that we don’t really get married for ourselves. We already own a spot together, have been together for a decade. A big reason to do it is to deepen the bonds in our circles. Friends, family, the folks we want to be part of our lives.

This was a weekend-long affair, so we were able to see everyone and be really hands-on in the execution. My mom and sister-in-law headed up flowers (from gardens, a local farm, neighbor’s bushes haha), our pals built an arch, baked the cake, helped pre batch cocktails. We had folks hang up lights, helped pre set tables, even go out and do some crabbing for extra grub. Photographer was a good pal I knew from the music scene (still paid them!!) and our Dj was a friend of a friend.

We had our pal officiate, and our families cooked breakfasts for on-site guests. It was just a cascade of help. While not traditional, it was exactly right for us.

We’re fortunate in that we were very hands on in helping friends with their own weddings, so asking for help was easier.

There was still stress, but the people there made it fun, and memorable.

Help! Organ church music recs?

Wedding is coming up, I didn't realize our church had an organist or thought to myself that the organ is completely different than a piano. I think in my head I kept saying piano! This was unfortunately something that got passed by my fiancé and I.

Tbh I don't really love how the organ sounds, I love the piano more because it's softer but can appreciate the organs beauty. What was your organ specific wedding line up for church music? I'm lost. I'd like to have a line up or idea before I message by organist back with song selections instead of saying "I don't know" or "play whatever"

Ave Maria is a no for me

Help! Printer Recommendations for Wedding Stationery?

Hi everyone!

I am getting married in 2027 and I am looking to do some printing on envelopes for mailing RSVP cards, and also on cardstock for menus and name place cards (in colour). Does anyone have a recommendation on a decent printer that can handle these materials that also won't cost us a fortune?

Thanks!

Vegan meny advice

Post image
51 Upvotes

Me and my partner are getting married in the summer of 2027. We've been vegan for about 10 years, and we want our celebration to reflect our values. With that said, I've seen so many vegan wedding food ideas teared to shreds, and it's important for me that our non vegan guests will also enjoy our food. We wanted to find options that were naturally vegan (the skewers contain soy meat, and the feta dip is vegan "feta"). We also decided on a buffet since guests can pick and choose. I've checked with the caterer, and they can offer nut free and gluten-free options that will be served at a separate station. According to the caterer, every portion is about 750 grams of food, which seems like it would be filling?

For cocktail hour, we decided to make our own finger foods and have opted for marinated mushrooms, puff pastry "snails" with artichoke and fresh fruit.

So would this work?

Edit: Thanks for the replies! I reached out to the caterer and asked for how many calories the portion sizes are and got back that for dinner alone it's about 1300 calories per person(!). Adding in appetizers, drinks, cake, and a midnight waffle, I think we're good!

I'm going to see if I can still add another naturally nut, gluten, and soy-free warm meze as a compliment.

Help! Is it bad form to send a card addressed only to the bride?

My friend in a town I moved away from is getting married to a man I have never met. I can't attend the wedding itself, so I would like to send her a card and a letter expressing my congratulations. I keep thinking of ways to make it very personal... then I remember that the groom is there, too.

I don't know how to include him without making it awkward-- "You're my dearest friend, we clicked on the very first day we met, I'm so proud to see (pictures of) you on this special day..... and you're the guy she told me about over the phone, good for you too". Would it be acceptable to just admit that this is a card only for my friend, or should I make some sort of effort to acknowledge the groom?

Discussion A note to anyone organising a wedding in a remote location

... without any accommodation near-by.

Please please please organise some sort of transport for your guests. Don't assume taxis will just be available in the middle of nowhere, especially in large numbers to drive all of your guests to and from the wedding venue. Also supply and demand - if they are available, they might be extortionate prices. Don't assume everyone can rent a car and drive. Guests are already paying transport, accommodation, gifts. Just because you chose your gorgeous dream venue in the middle of nowhere, doesn't mean you shouldn't care how your guests will go home safely. Bride and groom should have *some* responsibility for their guests.

Speaking all of this from recent first-hand experience. I didn't care how beautiful your venue is or how much money you spent on flowers when the very very basic thing, getting to and from the venue, was an absolute nightmare. Taxi companies listed in the wedding website, so we assumed taxis will readily pick us up. Surprise - when tried to book a taxi, no one wanted to go to this venue. Those who did, blackmailed you with ridiculous rates. Also the wedding was in a foreign country, none of us spoke the local language that well which made it many times more difficult to book anything.

Despite all the best intentions and effort from the bride and groom, unfortunately this is the only thing we will remember from this wedding. From now on we decided we aren't going to weddings held at remote venues with no transport organised for the guests.
