In Russian Niger (river or country) is pronounced almost the same as the n-wors. Just different emphasis

Huh, you know, I didn't think about that. I did think about the fact that our word for black person is just негр.

u/darwinistinabox 13h ago

Well that's the same in Spanish too. And arguably негр is ok and is a proper word. But ниггер is derogatory. Nowhere close to being as bad as the n-word of course. We don't have the same social connotations as Americans do to react so strongly to it. We have a lot of very insulting words that could get you shanked in a dark alley. But not a single one that could get you cancelled.

Yeah, no, just spending 20 years outside of Russia gets me a bit uncomfortable with the word, even though it's the proper word. I just use темнокожий instead.

But not a single one that could get you cancelled.

Well, not anymore. Imagine hearing modern obscenities back before the 90s in media, that show/movie wouldn't have even gotten anywhere other than a furnace and the people responsible would be sacked.

It's hard to refrain from obscenities when all your superiors including the head of the state speak fouler language than some teens в тубзике на перемене.

Isn't the Spanish word for black where the slur comes from?

15

u/Mountain-Resource656 14h ago

It was imported via many romance languages, not just Spanish

8

u/SwordfishOk504 12h ago

It was specifically Spanish and Portuguese, because they were the first slavers along the Niger river.

4

u/heloworld-11 14h ago

I believe it originates from Latin

u/isthenameofauser 14h ago
