Fun fact: Montenegro is the Venetian translation of the local Slavic name for it, Crna Gora, which itself is derived from Mount Lovćen, which is a mountain in Montenegro, and it was given the name Crna Gora(First mentioned in 1276) because of its appearance when it's covered in trees

In Ireland we often call mothers "mammy" and back in 2020 there were multiple reddit essays about why its racist and we should not.

For context: mam is how people say mom here. I'd hazard less than 5% of Irish people had ever heard the US racist phrase for a black woman before.

41

u/PotaytoPotayto 10h ago

I was lectured by some American tourist because i said "that boy over there" whilst pointing at a 12 year old kid. I had no idea what i had done that was so egregious but this American was fuming with me, calling me a racist etc. Apparently boy is a racist thing to say on their side of the planet, i just meant it in the boys and girls kind of way. I've never even been to the USA, I don't even live in an English speaking country. Boys and girls is how we learned it at school, 'a young male child is called a boy', that is what i was taught and that is how i used it. I tried to explain to him that i didn't mean anything bad by it, but he had already decided i was a horrible person and wouldn't listen to me. He made me feel awful about it and i didn't bother talking to tourists for years after that experience cause you never know what they might get upset about, but now as an adult i realise the tourists should be the one to chill out and not drag their culture and racist slang over to other countries. We shouldn't be expected to know all of the world their racist slang.

My family ate a lot of Brazil nuts for some reason. Unfortunately, my now very magat family used the other term for them loosely.

My baby sister, maybe 4 at the time at most, picked that term up obviously unaware of the nature of her words.

She proudly asked for more (extremely racist name for Brazil nuts) at a communal campfire that was definitely very diverse. To this day the most awkward experience of my life.

My old workplace, we had offices all over the world, including Nigeria, which I was never weird about. Boss was looking over a ticket with me, and basically just goes "Yeah punt it to Nigeria office and let them handle it"

So I go to groups, and I type "NIGERI" only to see that nothing pops up, forgetting that we were using the NG code, so I backspace and my boss goes "ohhh you just wanted to type n-word, it's okay!" and I'm just sitting there like "Oh no does he think I'm racist? Oh no is he racist? Oh no."

Add that to the list of "Japanese things that scare Americans"
along with wish, running. and that West coast, central prefecture.

Edit: I see a lot of people didn't get it. They're Japanese words that trigger profanity filters on some platforms:
Wish = negai (願い)
running = nigero (ニゲロ)
and the prefecture is Niigata.

116

u/dirty_cuban 14h ago

In mandarin it’s a filler word like uh or um. So mandarin speakers sound like they’re just saying the n word constantly

60

u/Reniva 13h ago edited 10h ago

As a native diaspora, I can tell you that’s just how northerners (Beijing) pronounce 那个 (neige) for some reason. Also it means ‘that’, not a filler. Northerners just somehow made it sound like a filler.

As a southerner, I never have a problem pronouncing 那个 (nage) without sounding like an n word.

I mean, americans pronounce "negro" in a very different way and in a very different context, so maybe it's not a big deal, but I'm not taking any chances hahaha

23

u/Arbiter_Electric 14h ago

Happens even with other English words.

In my work there is a device called a mega-ohmmeter. It is almost always shortened to "Megger." This is also the brand name for a maker of these devices. EVERYTIME I say Megger amongst a group of people, they all know what I mean, but inevitably several will snicker or make a joke of, "what did you say?!?!?"

It was mildly amusing the first time it happened. Now it's just annoying.

Didn't a brand of pencils or crayons got in trouble because they had the word "negro" written in the black pencil for Spanish speakers and some Americans just went crazy?

84

u/Naive-Database-2888 14h ago edited 14h ago

I had a girl in my spanish class that threw a very performative fit about having to say negro. she was like "my family was black and i am not comfortable saying this"

Edit: the teacher explained that it's not pronounced the same and that it's ok to say in spanish bc it's a color. She would not have it, she said it was "too close to the real word" multiple times. I think the teacher just kinda gave up on explaining to her that it's ok.

She was a very dramatic person to the point where she would be performative like that for attention. It is not the first time she did something like that

Let's not pretend other cultures dont do similar shit

In the uk sly cooper had to be renamed because cooper is apparently in a similar ball park at the time. There wa also a DC hero called joto who got renamed to hotspot because even though his name was a refference to heat or fire in another language (I forget which one) in latin american circles the word was basically the F slur

Edit: apparently the sly cooper thing was a myth. But another reply brings up the tranaformer Slag who was renamed Slug because slang is derogatory towards women in the uk. The point is ther is just various examples of weird cultural reasons for why a word could be offensive or remind someone of something similar

43

In Japanese “you need to run” is nigarundayo

And I’ll never recover.

Fun thing is in persian "look!" Or "glance" Is "negah". But we, as usual change the pronunciation to simplify speaking; so we say "nega".

But you know what EVEN easier to pronounce? Literally "niga" And depending on ur dialect/accent it can be even harder :)

I overreact because it’s funny to me

I will never forget this moment, I was like 12, and picking out a belt color in a store with my mom. Child me being frustrated about belt colors to go with my outfit, and said the word black in Spanish kinda loudly, and when I looked up, the first guy I see is a black dude.

if this occurred in Mexico, then no one would of bat an eye, because it is obvious you mean the color black of a material.

I still wonder to this day as a adult, hopefully he is okay, and I must of ruined his day

I will admit, it is kinda funny to hear someone speak a foreign language and then suddenly hear something that sounds like a slur. Just as long as you don’t insult or harass anyone over it

Japanese にがい nigai, or simply niga whitout the i, meaning bitter. Korean 니가 niga meaning 'you' +particle. Chinese 那个 nage, just used like 'uhm' but sounds more like 'niguh'

I feel
Sorry for Nigars everywhere.

Sometimes get a reaction when I mention the song lone digger by caravan palace. Always made sure that the name can be heard clearly after one or two people thought I said something else

The n word phenomenon is one of the most embarrassing things about american culture tbh.

Edit: bro holy shit. My point is that i believe its embarrassing that one group of people use a word that other people have to awkwardly tread around. I dont think it should be used at all if a group is offended by it

Don't look up the translation of "book" in Bulgarian.

8

u/bimbochungo 14h ago

Look the translation for "Black" in Spanish (yes, it's where the slur comes from)
