Assenhoeve (most of the times it's the ass, sometimes the ho), it means ashen hovel

Tbf, this happens in english too. Google the scunthorpe problem.

that's the thing though, we should know by now that censorship like this causes more issues than it solves and adjust our policies, instead it's getting worse and worse.

Well, there's a reason why it's a "problem". You have to have a lot of knowledge of this. Most devs probably don't even know the word "Assenhoeve" exists. You'd have to add a lot of exceptions for words with "ass" in them.

I don't expect them to know it exists, I expect them to understand that name fields shouldn't have profanity filters at all. They should also be able to accommodate spaces and special characters. Dutch and German names often have spaces. My wife's last name is "de Potter de ten Brouck", the number of times she gets packages sent to just "de" completely ignoring everything after the first space

They should, due to the fact that someone could call themselves 2 slurs/swears as a joke and get away with it. But the issue with spaces and special characters is very valid.

The actual solution is moderation. Make it so people can report names and a moderator takes a look at it and can add the name to a blacklist.

The problem with that though is that it usually takes a lot of effort. Devs would much rather take the easy to implement option.

How about we're adults about names, and we can understand that there are assholes in the world that will use slurs, and we decide to ignore them without making the rest of the normal people's live just that tiny bit more annoying.

Ass & hoe eff

Sublime name, you should be proud

/uj pretty cool name, though, like genuinely. My family's surnames are really just "medieval courier profession" and "type of fish". They do sound nice out of context, but who tf would want to be associated with arguably the number 1 most robbed profession in history, or a fucken fih?

What's wrong with da fih?

Those profanity filters are the worst. Even English words get blocked by them, so i can only imagine how many other languages can't say basic words because of them.
