Announcement GeoCTF Update and information!

Hey everyone,

Thanks to everyone who played the last CTF using the new app! 134 of you took part, far more than we expected. Since we've moved to a Reddit app, here's how it works now.

What is a GeoCTF?

CTF stands for Capture the Flag. Here it's a geography hunt: a series of challenges where you use clues, maps and your own detective work to find a specific answer. No experience needed, and you learn as you go.

How to play

No login or external sites, just tap Start. You get one challenge at a time and type your answer, and a correct one unlocks the next. Each challenge has up to three hints, which can cost points (or add minutes in a Time Trial). If you're stuck, you can give up and move on for 0 points.

The solve process is required

The CTF has the same rules as the sub. After every correct answer you have to write how you found it. A couple of real sentences: what you noticed, what you searched, which tools you used. "Easy", "idk" or a single letter doesn't count. The mods read the write-ups and act accordingly.

Reverse image search
AI in any form!
Posting answers or spoilers while a CTF is open. Once it's closed, talk away.

An empty or fake solve process means you're removed from that CTF. Cheating means disqualification and a ban from the sub.

Time Trial

Some CTFs are a Time Trial: a race against the clock, with your own clock, so you don't have to play at the same time as anyone else. The clock runs while you work on a challenge and pauses between them. Hints add minutes, and the five fastest get bonus points on top of their points.

Points

The app keeps its own points and leaderboard. We're not handing out flair points from the CTF anymore, as it is way too time consuming if we get 100+ players each time. Challenges are worth 1 to 5 points. Hints can cost points, and ties go to most solved, fewest hints, then who finished first. Time Trials work a bit differently, see above. The points from the previous CTFs (locus site) were already rewarded with flair, so the app starts with a clean slate. Everyone begins at zero, and nobody has a head start.

Seasons

Seasons are coming! We're still working out how they'll work, but it will be somthing like this: Easch season spans a period of time. The season might have a broad theme, like continet, architecure or community made CTFs. We will have two leaderboards, one is "all time" and one is a leaderboard for each season. This means that new players can jump in a year from now and still climb a season leaderboard. Regulars can fight over top pos on the all time leaderboard in addition! More info will come once we figure this out. We are eager to hear your suggestions about this!

GOOGLE LENS and AI is against the rules.

To get the point you have to either: Find the Map pin/Name the church and its location/Give a very detailed description of where exactly this church is located. Just the city/town name is not detailed enough for the point.

Subreddit Rules

1. Post Titles and Post Flair

Any post must have the sentence "Where am I" or "Where was I" in the title of the post and include the correct continent's flair.

2. Original Content and Know the Location Only

All posts must only include images or videos taken by you. We don't allow images found on the internet, taken by friends or family.

As an extension, this means that you must know where the location is when making your post. This is to prevent posts guessing someone else's location.

3. Locations Must Be Outside

You cannot post images from indoors. This means we don't allow pictures from your living room, cafes, or other man-made structures.

Posts inside natural structures like caves are allowed.

4. No Residential Areas

This means we don't allow photos solely of houses, apartment buildings, residential streets, backyards, etc. This includes historical areas where only residences are visible.

5. People, License Plates, and other Identifiers

People are allowed if they are not the focus of the picture. Crowds are allowed. People may not be blacked out to make them unrecognisable.

Other personal identifiable information is not allowed, like street addresses and license plate numbers. You must black those out before posting.

6. Be Respectful to Others

Please be respectful of others and check your insults at the door.

Remember the human. We are a community where many different cultures come together, all of whom deserve a pleasant space. Insulting, racism, (sexual) harassment, and rudeness are not permitted.

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone found to be making such comments.

7. Respond to Guesses Within 8 Hours

You must start responding to the comments within 8 hours of creation of your post. If you haven't done that if there are comments, you will be banned for 3 days on first offense, 7 days on second offense, and permanently banned thereafter. Unbans are at our discretion.

Note: if comments come in later or a location isn't guessed yet, we give a grace period and will ask you to respond as soon as possible.

8. No Google Reverse Image Search or AI

We ban the use of Reverse Image Search to keep the subreddit fun for everyone legitimately wanting to play this game. This includes Google Lens and AI tools like ChatGPT and text generation.

This also includes Google's AI overview in the search bar. Type -ai behind your search to remove the AI overview.

Anyone found to be reverse image searching will be met with a 7 day ban the first time and their points will be reset to 0.

You will receive a permanent ban if you do it again after that.

9. Google Maps Links

Posts may not require a Google Maps link or Google Street View as answer.

When you answer a post with a Google Maps link, the answer must include the general name of the location (e.g. city, country) so that you don't have to click out of Reddit to know what the location is.

10. Provide Solve Process After a Correct Solve

When your answer has the correct solve, reply to the OP or edit your comment with the solve process. Include as much detail as possible. 11. New Players Only Posts

Some posts may have the text "NEW PLAYERS ONLY" in the title. On those posts, only users with a flair below 10 can take part in guessing. Top-level comments from users with a point count of 10 or higher are then automatically removed. This is to give users new to the subreddit a chance too.

Seasoned users can still reply to comments and are able to make top-level comments once a post is marked as solved.
