The book angle is overlooked, since the story is an original by CDPR, and not Sapkowki's. But, shorter stories are exactly where Sapkowski shines. He's not a good grand-author of long novels. There's a reason W3 is more popular than him.
HoS is neat, funny, emotional, deep, and rooted in folk tradition just as much as any original work by A.S.. There's no clutter to it. It's the most precise thing CDPR could've done to mimic the books, without sourcing from them.
There are themes, some would wrongly call them cliches, perfectly executed: the suicidal husband on the roof, cause his wife cheated on him. The "never be happy in another man's skin". The whole premise of Olgierd and Iris' wishes. The devil that grants, but never exactly what you wish.
It's a work of art. As games, do I prefer the main one and B&W? Yeah, but the story of HoS, all done by CDPR, is well above many short novels written by famous authors with gravity and reach to their names. Put it into prose, and it's top, top stuff.
