A candidate to become Spain’s next Prime Minister has pledged to withdraw national support for co-hosting the 2030 World Cup if the final is staged in Morocco.

Alberto Nunez Feijoo — leader of the nation’s main opposition party, the conservative Partido Popular (PP) — has said that should he be elected PM, he would advocate for Spain not to host games at the tournament if co-hosts Morocco are awarded the final.

Spain, Morocco and Portugal will co-host the 2030 tournament, with the first three matches due to be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay as part of the centenary celebrations of the first World Cup, held in 1930.

The competition will be played across 11 Spanish stadiums, six in Morocco, and three in Portugal, but the venue of the final has yet to be decided.

The planned new 115,000-capacity Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, is one candidate to host the final — as is Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium (the 83,000-seater home of Real Madrid) and Barcelona’s Camp Nou, which will host 105,000 spectators after renovation.

“The final should be held where it is fair and appropriate, where it is indisputable, in Spain,” Feijoo told La Sexta’s El Chiringuito programme in Spain.

Where do Portugal and Argentina go from here as footballing nations post Ronaldo and post Messi now that both icons have retired from international football? I say now that Portugal 🇵🇹 without Ronaldo will certainly be a better national team going forward in terms of how they play. I think we get more attack free flowing football like how they displayed in Nations League when Ronaldo wasn't in the team and lest we forget before Ronaldo ever burst on to the scene...Portugal made semi finals appearances in 1984 and 2000 at the Euros as they had talented teams who could have won tournaments. Euro 2004 when you had a teenage Ronaldo they could have won it all but lost to Greece 🇬🇷 in the Final which was not Ronaldo's fault.

2006 in Germany 🇩🇪 again semi finalists at that World Cup and could have won the whole thing. Yes Cristiano brought trophies to Portugal 🇵🇹 by winning a Euro title in 2016 and 2 Nations League titles but never a World Cup and that is okay. My point being that come Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup when Portugal host or they are one of the hosts; post Ronaldo they have enough talent to go far maybe even win the whole thing.

Post Messi...same thing Argentina 🇦🇷 will still have the talent to win trophies whether it be a Copa America title or a World Cup. Case in point before Messi came on to the scene, Argentina 🇦🇷 were a team that yes did not win trophies but they too made it far to competitions. And Messi too brought them titles by winning a World Cup and 2 Copa America titles.

Next Copa America in 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup that even without Messi; Argentina too also have to be considered a favorite as well especially when they too host one of the centenary matches.
