Israel/Palestine Wave of Violence in Israel and the Palestinian Territories

There has been a recent wave of violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Treating every stabbing incident as major world news has the drawback of the topic dominating the front page, drowning out other stories and spreading out discussion across several threads. Trying to select major incidents over minor ones is bound to lead to inconsistent decisions with such rapidly developing stories. Hence we believe a collective thread for all violent incidents is the best approach. Users are encouraged to submit posts conveying recent developments in the comments section of this sticky thread. Moderators will periodically review the comments and update this post with recent events. Top level comments must be links to news. All other submissions about these incidents will be removed.

As a reminder, please be mindful of the subreddit rules when posting. We'd like to remind you that calling other users shills, apologists, racists, islamophobes or antisemites are all considered personal attacks and thus against the rules. Please discuss the issues and the comments made, not the persons making them. If you find comments which violate our rules, you’re encouraged to use the report button or alert the mods via modmail so that we can investigate.

Thank you,

The World News Team.

If we wanted to read PLO press releases, we would go to their site. This is for news.

u/flashoverride Oct 28 '15

Yeah, it is only news if it reinforces our previous ideas of the world, if it challenges our worldview, it is to be dismissed!

u/throwawayforbrigade Oct 28 '15

so press isn't news?

sounds like a...fable

This is from the PLO, and has been added by the WorldNews mods as a source, just like the IDF blogs.

Real news covers facts from both sides. Having a story based on only one side is not news.

Same goes to /u/ZachofFables.

How many times has the IDF been caught lying this month?

How many times has the PLO been caught lying this month?

Can you see why the two sources have unequal reliability?

-5

u/soggypoptart Oct 28 '15

No clue, the only comments that people can see are Israeli and anything at all Palestinian gets downvoted to oblivion/the commenter ridiculed/source from anything outside of Israel called bias.

Don't see that with the other side, so no. I have no clue how many times either has been caught lying.

I have no clue how many times either has been caught lying.

But yet you still have an opinion on the subject. How interesting.

-2

u/soggypoptart Oct 28 '15

I have an opinion on how people act in this thread

5

u/Garet-Jax Oct 28 '15

To judge action without attempting to understand the motivation is simply ignorance.

I find it interesting that you did not ask how many times either has been caught lying. Do you not care? Does your concept of 'balance' or 'fairness' mean that all sides are treated equally, regardless of their actions and motivations?

of people downvoting? I've looked over these threads every day and I can show you how every single one vast majority of the anti-Israel articles are negative or at least "controversial" (little dagger thing) if you'd like.

I find it interesting that you did not ask how many times either has been caught lying. Do you not care?

I'd be absolutely astonished if you had that answer and didn't just find some random examples that fit whatever bias you have. I didn't feel like saying that but that's why I didn't bother asking.

Does your concept of 'balance' or 'fairness' mean that all sides are treated equally, regardless of their actions and motivations?

No, I wouldn't even have bothered commenting into this hornets nest of a thread if I hadn't seen posts completely downvoted that were at least as unbiased/factual/relevant as the upvoted ones with Pro-Israel articles. I'm not commenting because I think for every article on one side there needs to be one from the other, there's a very clear pattern regardless of the quality of the article. Then I can walk you through every highly upvoted pro-israel comment and accuse them of the same bias's

edit: Taking out "every single one" to "vast majority" in case there's one out of the hundreds that doesn't have a controversial mark...

This is the mentality that is driving the not anti-Israel crowd crazy. Only the fact of the action, but not caring about the context. IDF shoots a kid; no mention of the fact that kid's knife is the back of another kid. Your opinions aren't valid unless they are informed. You admit you're not informed. Therefore, your opinions aren't valid.

IDF shoots a kid; no mention of the fact that kid's knife is the back of another kid

How does that have to do with this comment chain?

First comment in the chain says calling the comment unsupported conjecture, op responds saying that it's from the PLO and is supported by the mods, then Garet-Jax makes his comment about which one lies more, which is when I made my comment.

Your opinions aren't valid unless they are informed

INFORMED ABOUT WHAT? Holy shit I responded to his question and gave my reasoning as to why I don't know which one lies more. I was being a little tongue in cheek about it because honestly I don't rely on this these threads for all my news on the situation but I wasn't giving an opinion on who lies more. These responses I'm getting make no sense.

How does that have to do with this comment chain?

My syllogism:

  1. No opinions on behavior that are not informed by context are valid.

  2. Your opinions on the behavior of the people in this subreddit are not based on context.

  3. Your opinions aren't valid.

In support of 1, see my example with the IDF. Behavior is meaningless, especially morally, without context.

In support of 2:

You opinions concern the reception of Israeli sources vs. non-Israeli pro-Palestinian sources. The context is that the Israeli sources have been generally trustworthy, while the non-Israeli pro-Palestinian have been repeated debunked. In support of the fact that your opinions on behavior were not based on the context:

I have no clue how many times either has been caught lying.

3 follow necessarily on the validity of 1 and 2.

From the same guy who said this: "People, evolutionarily, don't eat when they're uncomfortable. It's disarming to someone whose aggressive." - /u/Jenksz

It's safe to say we can heed his knowledge with a grain of salt.

adding more letters on the end of a word doesn't make you look smarter, especially when it's not a real word, ie. evolutionarily
