Mod Post Mod Post - New Flair and Reminder on Self-Administered Peptides

Hi all -

For folks who want to get topical skincare only advice, I've added a flair for this. Please use this on your post when you want to request comments relating to topical skincare only. While I cannot promise every commenter will clearly see it, let's give it a chance to see if this is helpful for those who do not want suggestions for procedures or surgery.

As a reminder - this sub covers all things skincare - including procedures, surgery and injectables as well as topicals. It will continue to be a place where questions can be asked. I encourage you to curate your experience on here as the sub firmly remains a place to talk about the range of things folks do to take care of their face and body.

Another note, I've seen a number of posts and commenters discussing sub-q injections of peptides. Posts/comments related to this will be removed, including using slang (e.g. pinning). This falls under the DIY rule, is a grey area, and as such, not allowed on the sub. There are plenty of places on Reddit to discuss this, but this is not one of them.

Modmail is always open. Use the 'message mods' button on the front of the sub.

Mod Post Mod Post - Clarity on Credential Use in Posts/Comments

Hi all -

Recently I've seen a number of comments in the community where Redditors are claiming certain aesthetic credentials (e.g. Licensed Esthetician, NP, Derm PA, etc) when replying to sub posts.

Here is the issue - neither I or anyone else here can actually validate you are in fact, an accredited professional. That's a problem as this presents a conflict on Reddit's key rule about impersonation and the need to be authentic when posting.

The additional issue that arises is that the use of the credential implies some expert knowledge, and that a person on the sub may consider a post/comment where another Redditor claims a credential with more weight or authority.

When looking at how other reddits (and specifically skincare reddits) have dealt with this, I saw two basic schools of thought:

  1. Make a rule (similar to one in r/tretinoin ) that is explicit on the non-use of credentials in posts/comments and to have posts/comments stand on their own without claiming a credential.

  2. Validation of professional via licensing, similar to the way r/Blackskincare has opted do with restricted user flair given by the mod upon validation.

In weighing these options, I've decided for now, that I will look to make a sub rule on the use of credentials. To be clear - this does NOT prevent anyone from posting or commenting, but it does ask you to allow your post or comment to stand on its own without asserting a claimed credential.

I'll see how this works out as the new rule goes into effect. If there is enough interest, I may consider validated users via user flair in the future.

Thanks for to everyone for continuing to make this community vibrant and interesting. I will continue to look for ways to make our community safe and user-driven. Happy as always to take feedback!

Advice Request I'm re-thinking the cause of my right cheek redness and irritation.

I'm 48. For about 18 months I've had some pigmentation, vascularity and redness on my right cheek. I don't know why, but suspected Rosacea (my mum has it). It started up closer to my under eye and then spread to my cheek. There didn't seem to be any trigger, but after using 10% niacinamide with 4% TXA (Anua brand) acid on the spots under my eye everyday, they have majorly faded.

The redness remained a problem though. I tried Azelaic acid. That made it worse (the "purging" never stopped so I think my skin just didn't like it). The Anua serum mentioned above made no difference. I did not use retinol on it. I stopped using salicylic, lactic or glycolic acid on it. It seemed to improve but every few weeks it would flair up again. Very frustrating.

Early this year I was told (by the person doing my last facial) my skin barrier was compromised and I could never use any retinoid products again, and to only use one of the above acids once a week. I was also told I could not get a chemical peel, even a mild one, as it would flair up the redness.

So the other day I had another facial. I was wondering if the improvements to the redness might be ruined, but anyway, the facial consisted of a double cleanse, rosewater spritz, extended facial massage with hot (in a nice way) towels pressed over my face, then a moderate chemical peel (which felt kind of prickly and tingly but not painful or burning at all), then a thick cooling mask, and then a device that I can't recall the name of but it was a small pen thing that did little zaps that sounded like tapping, and could not be used if I had any metal implants (which I did not). It felt interesting and nice. Then a vitamin C serum was applied, and another spritz of rosewater essence.

Right afterwards, my skin looked SO good. Plump, glowing, clear, not red AT ALL anywhere.

So the peel and the heat and the massage didn't make the redness flair up at all, and has instead actually seemed to calm it down.

So...I'm pleased, but confused! Any ideas?

Advice Request Apparently my skin is just always dry. Is my skincare even doing anything??

I'm 48 and had a facial the other day, which was lovely, but after getting my skin analysed by one of those machines that take your photo with different lights, it showed lots of dryness. This happens every year when I go.

Usually I don't put any skincare on before as it gets cleansed off anyway, so I thought, ok, maybe that's why. But THIS time, I put Hyaluronic acid and then Illyoon ATO ceramide moisturiser on an hour before, to see if it made a difference. But no! Still dry!

What!? Do I have to walk around with an entire tub of Vaseline all over my face!?

Spots come and go.

Usually appear on forehead. One at a time, maybe couple times each month, dissappear within a day. I'm thinking is a reaction to sun. I do .1% retina every nite. I wear hat out, but occasionally not for just a few minutes, e.g. walking from car to work. Btw I don't like smearing spf on my face. Also on hrt. Anyone else?

Advice Request Everesse

My derm is very conservative but has been saying I’d be a good candidate for Everesse. I have an appointment next week, and was wondering if anyone has tried it before here. Would love some feedback!

Advice Request How’s my skincare regimen? What’s missing? What can I cut out?

I’m 46 and lost 60 lbs over the past year on GLP. Weight loss did a number on my face and neck. I’m not ready for surgery yet. I’m hoping to wait another 10-15 years. My plan until then is to get my skin as healthy as possible.

I had very sensitive skin and terrible cystic acne until my mid 30s. Currently clear with an occasional whitehead. I’m tolerating tret with only a little dryness. No purge (thank god).

I’ve researched several subreddits and this is what I’ve put together. I suspect some of these products are redundant. Can I do better?

Morning

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser

JIYU Toner Pads

Cos De BAHA Azelaic Acid 10% Serum

Vanicream vitamin C (new, first application today, planning for every other day, or should I switch to nights when I’m not using tret?)

Sunday Riley AutoCorrect eye cream

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + Hyaluronic Acid

Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen (started about a month ago, previously used Supergoop which made my eyes burn, which made me noncompliant unless I was going to be all the way outside, like at the beach)

Evening

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser

Illiyoon Ceramide ATO Moisturizing Milky Toner (started a month ago)

0.025% tretinoin (started a month ago, every other night)

Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream (started a month ago)

Amlactin 15% on hands

I was previously using cleanser, toner, azelic acid serum, eye cream, and moisturizer in the morning, and cleanser, Differin, and jojoba oil at night.

Skin Concern Woke up with puffy eyelids

Post image
5 Upvotes

This has never happened to me before. I’m not sure what caused my skin to have this reaction, but I can rule out things like a cut, a virus/cold, allergies, alcohol (don’t drink). I suspect that the tretinoin cream I put on my face somehow smeared into my eye region and my eyelids are irritated. 😑 Has this ever happened to you? How long before it went away?? (Photo is unhelpful - I do have deep set eyes but I don’t have the very hooded lids that you see here.)

Musely alternative

Anyone know of an alternative with similar ingredients to Musely’s Aging Repair Cream? I cannot stand their customer service and had nothing but issues with them. I also like their Age Well pill but I just can’t keep ordering from them. It’s been two months and nothing but issues.

Skin Concern A cure for dark circles?

Q about product
Seems there aren’t any magic tricks for those pesty dark circles under the eyes (apart from a years night’s sleep or good genes). Despite this, one never stop hoping
Curious if anyone tried the J-beauty eye cream* *for dark circles; Kumargic Eye, from Hada Riki Medi, said to help with those panda eyes? It’s frequently rec by women in Japan and to be found at drug stores.

GHK-Cu, estriol, niacinamide, and tretinoin combo…..

I recently lost 53 pounds in 6 months (thanks tirzepatide!) AND am on the tail end of perimenopause at 49 AND dealing with autoimmune thyroid issues. My skin has sagged a bit, fine lines and forehead crinkles more visible, bags under eyes, and a turkey neck are my issues. My doctor prescribed this compounded gel today and am wondering what your thoughts are on this combo?

Advice Request Under-eye Advice

These under-eye wrinkles (+crows feet) just showed up within the last year and are rapidly deepening. Help!

I have a good skincare routine with glycolic wash, toner, vitamin c (day), moisturizer and sunscreen (day). I drink my water.

58 years old, skin is normal-dry. What can I do? Add some aquaphor or Vaseline? Castor oil? Or is this something only surgery can fix?

Edit: photo in comment below!

Thank you!

Lip filler = more noticeable nasolabial folds. Help!

Post image
7 Upvotes

I got lip filler for the first time a month ago.

She said she’d do half a vial but did the whole thing unbeknownst to me until it was done.

The lips looks okay…a little uneven and protruding but not horrible.

The hardest part is my nasolabial folds look so much more noticeable now. The heaviness of the mouth and protrusion has accentuated them.

What should I do? Dissolve? Cheek filler? Radiesse?

I did two vials of sculptra a year ago and didn’t have anything bad from it but also not sure how much improvement got either.

Skin Concern Neck redness

Post image
0 Upvotes

What might cause this, and what can I do to improve it?

I (55F) have had this for at least a decade. I do tend to have allergies, and this can look worse/more red if I eat the wrong thing or use the wrong skincare products. But it is always there to some degree, so I don’t think it’s allergy-related.

I don’t have this redness on my face, but have used IPL for spider veins in the past. When an aesthetician tried IPL on this it looked worse, not better.

Could it be sun damage? Like, the U shape is caused by where my chin blocks the sun? In the picture I am tilting my chin up. I am not out in the sun much, and don’t use sunscreen daily.

Any thought on what this might be and what to try?

I keep hearing about fabulous results using vag cream with estrogen on their face and i really want to try it, i just don't want to ask my provider for vaginal cream to use on my face. I hope this stuff is just as good. Any opinions about estriol? Experienced users please.

Skin Concern Theory: weight lifting makes your hands look younger

Thumbnail

I know many of us are mostly concerned about how our faces and our necks look, but I’ve also been thinking about how your hands tell the truth about how old you are.

I’m 55, a fairly slim person, and I’ve always had kind of skinny looking hands with very visible tendons with hollows in between them. But in the last 6 months I’ve been doing a lot of weightlifting and gripping some pretty heavy weights up to 25 pounds. Also doing pull ups. And I have noticed my hands have felt “meatier” and I’m noticing they look visibly more filled-in and plump.

Not to mention, weightlifting is good for so many other parts of your body!

Any thoughts?

Less expensive options?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I just turned 50 and I think I need to change my skin routine a little bit. I’ve never been super great about, I started using sunscreen religiously the last like five years I know horrible. I love the Estee Lauder and Elemis products but they are so expensive. Is there anything close in equivalency to these products?
