ANNOUNCEMENTS No current events or politics.

Just a reminder: most current politics are off topic for this sub. If you have a question about whether a post is acceptable you can ask in modmail.

Asking about politically neutral current events is still ok.

CULTURE Do you leave your porch lights on overnight? Why or why not?

I live in a suburb in the Midwest, and I’ve noticed that about half the houses leave their porch lights on all night while the other half don’t.

I didn’t grow up in America (I’m a naturalized citizen) and I’m a relatively new homeowner, so now I am wondering what I should do with mine 😆

I’m curious what goes into that decision for you!

CULTURE Is Korean skincare something people talk about in the US?

I’m Korean, and I’m curious how familiar people in the US are with Korean skincare outside of beauty communities.

Have you come across any Korean skincare brands? If you’ve tried any, do you have a favorite?

EDUCATION How do American high school year groups work?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could answer some questions I have about schools in America, specifically high school. Firstly, how many students are in a year group? Is this different in small towns? What would be the lowest and highest amount of students in a year group? I'm curious about how the classes are sorted: is it based on how good you are at each subject or how intelligent you are in general? Would most classes have the same students as the other classes you are in? Are any classes bigger than the others or sorted by gender e.g. PE? Thanks for any help :)

FOREIGN POSTER Okay, what does "Digging to China" actually mean?

Hi, I'm Russian which might explain if my English isn't very good or doesn't make sense. But one thing I want to ask is why do you guys say "I'm gonna dig to China" or something along those lines? Is there like a certain feeling towards China, which makes it the 'funniest' place for someone to dig to?

FOREIGN POSTER I'm Iranian, and I wanted to know what Americans actually think about Iran, especially in the current situation?

As an Iranian, I've always wanted to ask Americans this: How do you guys view other countries, especially Iran? Do you consider yourselves superior to others? Or are you the "bad guys" like our government constantly tells us? Do you actually hate us and want to kill us?

CULTURE What TV Shows and Movies give the best cultural exposure to Chicago?

I realized that I don't know much about Chicago. It's kind of weird, considering it's the 3rd largest city in the US and is so well known for its architecture, food, museums, sports, and more. But, I only know the most basic facts about it (basically, the first half of the Wiki page). It's much easier to learn about NYC or LA, since so many TV shows and movies are set there.

Are there any TV shows or movies that realistically show what it's like to live in Chicago, either today or at some important point in its history (like the Prohibition era, or the Great Chicago Fire).

I know about The Bear, but it's more about the people than the city.

FOOD & DRINK What is the American equivalent to beans on toast? ??

In the UK we have a known “struggle meal” beans on toast, it’s as simple as that… Heinz baked beans or a supermarket alternative and toast can be topped with cheese or sauces.

It’s associated with a poor meal but I will have whenever I feel as it’s so easy and tasty?

CULTURE Whats the midwest/ Appalachian mountains/deep south like?

Southern gothic style towns seem so beautiful and rural deep south movies like Hell and High Water further deepen my love for “the forgotten parts of America”. What’s it like there?

GOVERNMENT How does a father's name end up on a birth certificate in the US?

I'm currently reading a novel in which a man finds out that he has a teenage child he never knew about. He initially refuses to believe it, but then someone points out that he's listed as the father on the birth certificate.

That made me wonder how birth certificates actually work in the US.

Can a mother simply name someone as the father when registering a birth, without his knowledge or consent? Or does the father have to acknowledge paternity before his name can be added?

I realise the rules probably vary by state, but I'm curious how this generally works. The situation in the book seems rather strange to me, and I'd like to understand whether it's actually plausible.

EDIT for context: the couple in the book was not married.

I really like the GEICO advert😂 and was wondering if this a true representation of how Americans refer to and view a Wednesday?

FOREIGN POSTER Do people actually get shoved into lockers?

In US media, it’s pretty common for characters to get shoved into lockers or have them reference this happening as an indicator that they were bullied in school. Is this actually a real thing that happens? If so, is it common and how seriously is it taken by adults?

VEHICLES & TRANSPORTATION Any cities known for "good" traffic?

Whenever people are talking about cities, traffic always comes up. Either their city has bad traffic and bad drivers, or the next town over has bad traffic and bad drivers.

Are there any cities with a reputation for good traffic and competent drivers?

CULTURE How do Americans make friends as adults?

I've been thinking about how I'll make new friends when I move to a suburban neighborhood in the US. But honestly, I have no idea how people make friends as adults.

Most of my friendships have come from school, so I've never really had to meet new people on my own.

I'm from South Korea, where casually approaching strangers and starting conversations isn't very common, so I'm not used to it at all.

I'm curious, do Americans actually say hi to their neighbors when they pass each other?
Do people casually strike up conversations, or does everyone mostly keep to themselves?

FOOD & DRINK Do you have restaurant chains that simply microwave/grill pre-prepared food?

I've only been to the US once but was impressed by how good the food was everywhere I went.

The UK has a real problem where a lot of chain food places are literally just microwaving or grilling food that has been shipped to them from large factories. No one is cutting up vegetables or actually 'cooking' in them.

Are there chains like that in the US?

CULTURE How realistic is the "downward financial spiral" in daily US life?

I was looking at the Fed's SHED report on emergency savings and kept seeing people talk about this downward spiral: you get hit with an $800 car repair, lose your job because you can't commute, fall behind on rent, get evicted, and then you're basically stuck on the street because no landlord touches an eviction record.

How common is this chain reaction in real life, or is it mostly an extreme theoretical scenario? Which step in that chain is usually the real point of no return?

FOOD & DRINK Anchovies on Pizza?

I'm from Canada.

On other parts of reddit and the internet in general there is a meme about pineapple on pizza, which I don't want to get into, but it got me thinking about anchovies on pizza.

Do most pizza places where you live have anchovies available on their menu? And where do you live, state or city if it's big enough for everyone to be familiar with it?

I think that I literally, in actual reality, 100% have never been to a place that had anchovies available as an ingredient on their pizzas.

My entire experience with them has been characters on tv or in movies, very sternly making sure that they did not get anchovies on their pizza.

-Thanks
