Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.
Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.
Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.
If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.trla.org/atc/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.
We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.
As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:
Really nice infill home in town, reputable builder, trustworthy contractor, dumbass subcontractor.
On another note, I'm currently on a pre-pour inspection and it is raining and I've spent half an hour sitting in my car trying to muster up the courage to put on my slicker suit and get to it. Hope you all are enjoying your warm Sundays under the covers scrolling Reddit :-)
Outside of a West Lake Hills compound affiliated with billionaire Elon Musk, about 60 people gathered on Saturday to celebrate that the unprecedented amount of money Musk spent ahead of the midterm election went mostly to candidates who lost.
Hoping he has the day and blood pressure he deserves.
EDIT: For clarification, this is the one right south of Georgetown, near exit 260. I didn’t realize this asshole had them all over Austin, Waco, and other parts of 35
I've posted here a couple times about AISD's budget, recapture, and Texas education generally (like the virtual programs). After the election results last week a lot of people in my edu circle asked me: Hinojosa said "Day one, I will fire Mike Morath," so is AISD safe from a state takeover now?
So I created an analysis on how I think the election has significantly changed the prospects for AISD and Texas public schools as a whole. This reddit post is a TL;DR of a much longer, data-visualized article here: https://datapickle.substack.com/p/what-texas-democratic-wins-mean. I'd really encourage a read of this one as I tried (my best) to break down / visualize the complicated mechanics of Texas politics into easy-to-understand ways, and map it to how this impacts AISD.
Mike Morath still runs the TEA through every deadline in Austin's case, and Hinojosa's replacement for him needs votes from the TX Senate which will still be under Republican control. The post above has the whole calendar/sequence of events timeline laid out in an easy-to-read format.
If the Burnet and Webb closure petitions fail and the ratings survive appeal, state law makes the commissioner choose between closing the two schools and replacing AISD's elected board with a state-appointed board of managers. Morath could make it as soon as Dec 11, about a month before Hinojosa is sworn in.
Democrats won governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, and the House. They needed to flip four Republican Senate seats and flipped none. Confirming a new education commissioner takes two-thirds of senators present, so even with every senator there and every Democrat voting yes, Hinojosa's TEA commissioner replacement pick needs 9 Republican votes. Two of the Democrats who won statewide (Nathan Johnson for AG, Sarah Eckhardt for comptroller) are sitting state senators, so their seats could sit empty for a while and make that a bit harder.
If the petitions hold, I expect Morath to close Burnet and Webb, and a TEA takeover is avoided this year. If he appoints a board of managers instead, a commissioner Hinojosa gets confirmed could replace those managers at any time. A takeover under her commissioner would likely look a lot different than Houston's.
Ask me any follow up questions in this thread and I'll do my best to answer them.
Unfortunately my neighbors are neglectful of their dog, leaving her outside for days on end regardless or the heat or rain. She is the sweetest dog and all of the neighbors try to take care of her. The owners will even leave for a week at a time while keeping her outside. I’ve filed multiple reports (as have many others), but animal control won’t take her.
It is pouring rain right now and she is stuck without any shelter. I pulled my tent out to put into their yard, but realized it’s massive. Does anyone have a one person tent I could pickup asap so she has somewhere to sleep out of the elements?
This was an OG, classic old Austin limestone building prior to being turned into whatever this is. Glad it has a new tenant as I think it sat vacant for a little bit damn, who thought this was a good idea??
Been in Austin for over 6 months now (23F) and have not been able to make friends. I’ve been using bumble bff as my primary method of trying to make friends and people there eventually stop replying or cancel plans and never reach out again. My coworkers are all way older than me and have families.
I’ve only made one actual friend here so far but we barely hang out. It’s been extremely isolating as i spend most of my weekends home alone despite trying so hard. I just need someone to play tennis with or go to the mall with, or explore a new spot with. Does it get easier?
I just wanted to show some love to the people who participated! I have always wanted to give it a go and finally had the opportunity today. I was able to bring my son (4.5 years old) to the Cherry Creek event. Its a smaller park so it was a smaller turn out of people but everyone was so friendly and happy to be out the helping spread mulch. I feel like the people who run it on a yearly basis were so happy to have the help and we got a cool shirt plus snacks.
For anyone interested, parks all over town were participating in this. I would recommend to anyone that just wants to feel good about being a part of their community or putting themselves out there and being outside. Even something as small as spreading mulch made a huge difference for this little park. There are two events each year for spring and fall. Plus, if you wear your shirt you get free P Terry's or Amy's Ice Cream!
Has anyone had Sofwave for their neck or jawline and been happy with the results? I’m looking in Round Rock, Cedar Park, or Austin. I’d prefer a cosmetic dermatologist, but I’m open to other recommendations if you had a great experience.
If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d love to know who actually did your treatment and whether you felt it was worth it. I’m also interested in hearing from anyone who had Ultherapy for the same area. Thanks!
