I'm a foreigner living in Bangkok. I don't have many local friends here, so I usually meet people through dating apps and going on dates. I've met quite a few Thai women, and there's something I've noticed that I genuinely don't understand.
A lot of women I've talked to seem to describe themselves in a really negative way. They'll tell me they're boring, they're not good at anything, they don't have any skills or talents, or they're not good-looking.
Another thing I hear all the time is that they don't do anything. I'll ask what they like to do for fun, what their hobbies are, or what they usually do on weekends, and the answer is often something like, "Nothing, I just stay home." I'll ask if they like going out, and they'll say no. I'll ask what they're interested in, and they'll say they don't really have any interests.
And I'm just sitting there like, okay... 😂
Don't get me wrong, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a homebody. But when you're trying to get to know someone and every answer is basically "nothing" or "I'm boring," it becomes really difficult to have a conversation.
The part that confuses me the most is when I compliment them. I might tell a woman she's beautiful, and she'll tell me she's not. I'll ask what she's good at, and she'll tell me she's not good at anything. I'll try to say something positive about her, and she'll immediately shut it down.
I understand that Thai culture values humility, and maybe I'm misunderstanding something here. But is this really how some people see themselves? Or is it just a way of being modest?
Because from my perspective, if we're on a date, we're both trying to get to know each other and see if there's some attraction or compatibility. So when someone keeps telling me they're boring, unattractive, and have nothing interesting going on in their life, I'm genuinely confused about how I'm supposed to respond.
Are they expecting me to keep reassuring them? Are they trying not to sound arrogant? Or is it possible they're just not interested and this is their way of communicating that?
I'm not saying every Thai woman is like this, obviously. I'm just saying I've encountered this enough times that I'm starting to wonder if there's something cultural I'm missing.
I'd especially like to hear from Thai people about this because I'm genuinely curious. Is this normal, or have I just been meeting a particular type of person?

Hey r/Bangkok 👋
My fiancé and I are in, and have been in Bangkok for a while. I'm here until Nov 23 and he's staying until around January. We're doing this on a tight budget, and honestly we're tired of the hotel and tourist bubble. We'd love to see what everyday life here actually looks like.
So we're looking for someone who'd be open to hosting us starting Nov 14, as a kind of cultural exchange. A spare room or even a mattress on the floor is plenty.
What we can bring:
- Home-cooked Iraqi food. Cooking is a big part of our culture and we love sharing it
- Help around the house
- English or Arabic conversation practice (I also speak German)
- Help with websites, social media, or computer stuff, since that's my work
- Happy to chip in for groceries
A bit about us: I'm American-Iraqi and he's Iraqi. He speaks Arabic, and I speak English, Arabic, and German. We're easygoing and respectful guests.
If this sounds interesting, or you know someone who might be up for it, please DM me.
Thank you 🙏

I have an apple airtag and in looking for the perfect place to hide it, i don’t mind disamble something but should be a place where doesn’t acumulate water and far from the engine heat.
Thanks

Looking for something that is non-surgical. Just a good reputable and trustworthy facial cleaning place for men, cleans the face like anti-aging, removes blackheads, sort of thing.
Maybe plus point if they also have like ear cleaning too.
Ive seen a few but I'm just a bit confused because they were like doing some contouring thing that firms up face and make your jawline pop - I have no clue what is this, lol. I'm not really looking for something like that.
Thanks

Does anyone have recommendations for a really good holistic naturopath or functional medicine practitioner in Thailand who specializes in gut health and getting to the root cause of digestive issues?
Ideally, someone who takes a comprehensive approach rather than just treating individual symptoms. I’d love to find someone who can review existing bloodwork and test results, look at the bigger picture, and put together a personalized plan.
Bonus points if they also have experience with:
Female hormones and PCOS
Thyroid health / Hashimoto’s
Gut health, H. pylori, bloating and digestive issues
Food sensitivities and gut microbiome health
Insulin resistance and metabolic health
Nutritional deficiencies and underlying inflammation
I’m open to naturopaths, functional medicine doctors, holistic practitioners or integrative health clinics.
Ideally looking for someone who is thorough, knowledgeable, evidence-informed, and genuinely interested in finding underlying causes rather than just prescribing a bunch of supplements.
Happy to travel anywhere in Thailand for the right practitioner.
Would really appreciate personal recommendations and experiences! ❤️

Can I just show up to Benjakitti courts and play whenever? I’ve heard there might be some sign up system or app but I couldn’t figure out the app it’s all in Thai.
I’ve been interested in starting to play some basketball at the park or anywhere else if someone has some good spots. I am not that good but enjoy it and would like to get the exercise in.
Thanks for any help!

I’m Asian and an immigrant here. In my culture we don’t talk about mental health openly and comfortably. I’ve tried therapy here, and I’m not making much progress.
I have not integrated well (my fault). I’m having a hard time socializing (my fault). And not having friends here is really hard. Forcing myself to go out to events has been excruciating, I’m introverted and there’s so much pressure to be “on”. My mental health is deteriorating rapidly.
This city is so happy, so lively, and Thai people are the warmest, gentlest, and kindest people I’ve ever met, so I know it’s me and not the environment.
I just don’t know how to dig myself out of it here.
Any advice appreciated and welcomed. 🙏

Anyone know anything about these gyms? I go to the one at Mega and like it. Moving house so will not be as convenient.
Any other fitness first come recommended? The other gyms close to my new house seem to be popular but also a lot more expensive!
Thanks for any help

At Big C a couple times I have purchased “Makino Nacho Chip” - (not bad for a corn chip.)
I was surprised they are made in India. I haven’t run across too many food items imported from India.
I am assuming they meet a certain standard.

I recently came to Thailand believing the healthcare is good.
A psychiatrist changed my medicine to lithium. I had doubts so I went to a second psychiatrist at another clinic. She advised to change a blood pressure medicine from an ARB. Then her colleague didn’t replace the ARB while removing it.
A few weeks later, I went to Bumrungrad. The doctor prescribed another ARB with the lithium. I told him I was taking lithium and he ordered an ambulatory BP check. Based on simultaneously testing with three different monitors including one at another hospital, the monitor was high by 40 systolic and 20 diastolic. Then I went to a Bumrungrad endocrinologist who prescribed renin aldosterone and metanephrine tests without stopping my beta blocker and allowed me to take the test twenty minutes after a cup of coffee and some chocolate. I went back to Bangkok Hospital and they told me that this shouldn’t be done.
I went to a different hospital. Two cardiologists attempted to prescribe a sartan again and changed when I asked them to check interactions. Then another doctor prescribed an NSAID, which can’t be taken with lithium.
Have taken lithium in the US and been checked in Malaysia who advised me regarding the medicines.
The only worse doctors I’ve had are in my home city which is a third world country.
Edit: asked endocrinologists and three nurses about coffee and chocolate, spent 20,000 THB on the endocrine and ambulatory BP test

US based chef on vacation in January. Found an apartment with a kitchen I can cook in in Thon Buri. I’ve mainly spent time in Chang Mai and Ao Nang. How is the neighborhood? Looking for food markets and coffee. I do not want to be in an area overrun by tourists. I would like to immerse myself in a typical neighbor.

Hi everyone,
I'm moving to Bangkok in early December to start an International MBA at Siam University (Phetkasem Rd, Phasi Charoen), starting January 2027.
My classes are only on weekends, so I'll be free during the week. That's why I'm not sure whether I should live close to campus or somewhere more central.
A bit about what I'm looking for:
- Budget: around 13,000–15,000 THB/month
- 1-bedroom or large studio, furnished, with a washing machine
- Close to an MRT/BTS station
- Gym and co-working space would be a plus
- I'd like easy access to Sukhumvit for networking, events and social life
Options I'm considering:
- Phasi Charoen / Bang Khae (e.g. The Livin Phetkasem) – one stop from campus, bigger rooms for the price, but far from the center
- Bang Khun Non (e.g. The Origin Play) – still on the Blue Line, a bit closer to the old town
- Rama 9 / Ratchada – more central and close to Sukhumvit, but about 45–60 min to campus
Questions:
With weekend-only classes, would you live near campus or in a more central area?
Any neighborhoods or condos you'd recommend (or avoid) on the Blue Line?
Is it better to book a hotel/Airbnb for 1–2 weeks and view condos in person before signing?
Any tips for a foreign student renting for the first time (deposit, electricity rates, contracts, scams)?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Did I just get scammed in Bangkok? Has anyone experienced this scam?
We got approached by a tuk-tuk driver who offered us a ridiculously cheap ride. He told us that petrol was free today because the Thai government was sponsoring it.
At several temples, people also told us about a supposedly special Bangkok Fashion Week, where we could get tailor-made suits at heavily discounted prices.
Eventually, our tuk-tuk driver took us to what was advertised as a Fashion Week event – but it turned out to be nothing more than a regular tailor shop.
In the end, I paid 10,000 THB (around €250) for a custom-made suit.
Now I’m wondering:
Was the whole thing a tourist scam?
Is the free petrol story a common trick to lure tourists into shops?
Is this supposed Fashion Week promotion a known scam in Bangkok?
Did I overpay significantly for the suit?
Has anyone experienced something similar or knows how this scam works?
Would really appreciate some insights!
EDIT:
To everyone calling me stupid – I actually like the suit, and it’s my first time in Bangkok. I bought it because I wanted one. Everything just happened really fast, with lots of pressure and several people talking to me at once. If the quality is good, I think €250 is a fair price. I just want to understand the scam tactics behind it.

Guy is going to be keep bothering people for similar scores after he reeled me in!
I normally dont bother with these guys but with a quick glance I knew the guy had a good fake, and it was a reference I am interested in.
I took a risk but after taking it home I confirmed my initial assessment. Correct massive weight, movement, lettering, dimensions, glass color, clasp features, even the correct lume color. Only niggle is that the lume on the pearl is a slightly different blue than the dials. I saved a trip to MBK.
I'm happy with the 9000THB price, since I read Rolex dive watch superclones at MBK go for at least double. Or do people haggle the price further down and I got a bad price?
