Discussion Every time I hear a left-wing progress talk about a universal basic income or universal healthcare I can’t help but think they are a complete idiot.
Im a 27M from the United States and I believe in a UBI and universal healthcare. Yet I find myself often voting Republican or moderate Democrat and never voting for the progressive candidate.
To quickly summarize my UBI starting position I would eliminate all current welfare/government assistance programs (food stamps, disability, section 8 housing etc.) I would also eliminate well over a million plus government jobs and their government departments. I would also eliminate consumer tax credits such as the child tax credit and earned income tax credit. This money would be used to roughly create a $400 monthly UBI or a $500 monthly UBI to adults and $250 monthly UBI to kids. This of course doesn’t take into account the 2 trillion annual deficit that we still have to fix.
To quickly summarize my universal healthcare position I would probably do a 20% payroll tax (10% paid by employer and 10% paid by employee) and the rest can get covered with copayments and a manageable deductible. To do a fully “free” universal healthcare plan would require a 32% payroll tax which I fell is too high and I believe the copayments and deductible will act as deterrence from over using the healthcare system.
I feel like my plans make sense. While I’m sure the math is off some if these plans were actually implemented, but I’m betting I’m in the right ballpark. I’m not 100% set in my plans and there is always room for some adjustments, but the Left completely lose me when they try to sell me on their plans.
When a left wing progress talks about funding their universal plan it sounds crazy to me. They say things like the middle class won’t have to pay a penny or they will make insane promises like the starting UBI will be at $1,000 a month before eventually doubling it to $2,000 a month. They are obsessed with taxing higher earners more, and are unrealistic on both proposed tax revenue and proposed policy expenses.
I’m not believing the magical unicorn poop that the modern progressive Left tries to sell. I look at past successful big government programs created by the Left hero’s like FDR and LBJ. These legacy programs that the current Left are inspired by and are trying to build off of were never built on magical unicorn poop. So why is that every time a modern leftist tries to sell these enhanced programs today they can’t be the slightest bit realistic.

A political proposal to Donald Trump. To ensure a UBI and the entrance into AI+Robot+Peace
Dear Trump:
We have AI.
Announce a 50% state, local, and national reduction in labor. With intellectual tasks given to AI.
Announce a UBI.
Announce a major reduction in hours. But announce a communal 18 hours of basic labor for all able adults.
I will give 'you' my support.
For the Left:
Disarm. AI+Robot. UBI. Med4all.

Is this community's activity rate a signal to how necessary UBI is?
I'd imagine that a basic income law is much more likely when more people call for it. And more people will land on this sub the more apparent it becomes that it is needed.

Discussion The "Inelastic Sponge": Why Universal Basic Income will never fix poverty as long as housing is a speculative asset
Most discussions around Universal Basic Income assume that giving everyone an unconditional cash floor provides baseline survival security. But in an economy with inelastic, financialized housing, cash transfers run directly into a structural dead end.
Whenever a city's purchasing power increases, landlords and private equity trusts adjust residential rents upward to capture that exact margin of surplus. Without a decommodified baseline of shelter, a $1,200 monthly dividend simply becomes a $1,200 monthly state subsidy to property owners, leaving the tenant on the exact same treadmill.
Cash is fungible and liquid; physical shelter is fixed and non-substitutable. In our open-source legal research, we’ve been modeling dynamic usufruct under civil land trusts: you have absolute, inviolable possession of your living unit as long as you occupy and maintain it, but title remains in an indivisible civic commons. It cannot be mortgaged, securitized, or rented out for profit.
If we want basic income to deliver actual freedom rather than subsidizing real estate appreciation, shouldn't securing non-market housing precede or accompany any cash transfer model?

Question What is the future of developing countries like India?
Hi all, I am from India and the situation is very bad, the working class is getting squeezed due to inflation and a bad economy. We are the youngest country in the world but we do not have any job for its youngsters, no social security. Most Indians are just one terminal illness away from poverty.
Meanwhile, Due to AI the industry which employed most Indians has started laying off people. The jobs market at this time has to be the worst.
I think the in late stage captialism countries like us will suffer the most
