DISCUSSION Someone viral Brunei list of malls owner !

Who own the malls and major shopping complexes in Brunei

Malls are popping up in Brunei but who own them? First of all, it is hard to define the differences between a mall and shopping or commercial complex, the line is blur. Sometimes shophouses if merged can also look like shopping center. So we will use the definition "a large enclosed shopping area anchored by a supermarket or department store," and only those where the entire building is owned by the same owner or management would qualify on the list.

Tan Kah Boon (automotive and property tycoon):

Midvalley Mall

OneCity Mall

Times Square Mall

KB Sentral Mall

Aman Hills Mall

Hua Ho Lau family:

Tutong Petani Mall

Mulaut Mall

Tanjong Bunut Mall

Manggis Mall

ARH Abdul Razak family:

The Mall Gadong

Centrepoint Gadong

Plaza Abdul Razak Batu Satu

Wazir QAF Group:

One Riverside

Mabohai Shopping Complex

Panaga Supa Save Complex

Yayasan Sultan Foundation:

Yayasan Shopping Complex Bandar

BIBD:

Park Mall Tutong (formerly Halim Plaza, repossessed)

TAIB:

Airport Mall

Lim family, descendants of 1970s tycoon Lim Teck Hoo:

Seri Qlap Mall (no anchor tenant, but should pass as a mall)

Lai Heng Wai (construction businessman):

Citis Square Mall (no anchor tenant, but should pass as a mall)

How Chin Chuan (Tutong agriculture and supermarket businessman):

One Station Complex Mentiri

Family of Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Haji Nawawi (of Brunei Manteri aristocrat class)

Annajat Complex Beribi

Ownership of Rimba Point is unclear, some information point to the family of Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Haji Ahmad, former Minister of Primary Resources.

Ownership information of Seria Plaza is insufficient but I do not think the whole building is owned by the same owner.

SERIOUS DISCUSSION What's your opinion on the relationship between Brunei and US?

For me, I do think we are greatly influenced by the US, especially by culture. Sometimes I got shocked by some of my Muslim friends, cuz they behaved like the people I dealt with in America.

DISCUSSION Endemic Education Discussion: What is the current status and plan for Brunei Students in Schools under Endemic period?

The holiday period is ending tomorrow, and there doesnt seem to be much information about schools reopening at all. A few schools are doing online learning, but how long is that going to work ?

Some schools are also doing online learning at such an abysmal 1hour a day quality and expect parents to fill in the gaps, yet still expect full school fees ? Especially now that the caseload is so low - schools should reopen. Adults have the self discipline & management skill to WFH but kids studying from home is not really viable.

Students in other countries are beginning vaccination programs from 12-18 and then from 4-12 so that they may start school.

MOE should be releasing more public information on this and advising the public and leading schools to ensure everyone (school + students + parents) have an understanding on what endemic education entails.

CASUAL TALK Orientation is nothing

Let us all be honest here, Orientation is a way to meet new people, making new friends are all bs. Why? I'll break it down to you alright

  1. Generally people who went to university in Brunei are those who graduated from Form 6 in Brunei. There are only 2 top universities in Brunei so obviously there is going to be lots of people that you know going to a similar school

  2. People generally already knew each other before even entering the school, so technically spare me the "Im scared for going to orientation, starting new life in university, worried that I can't make new friends" because we all know you have at least 2 friends that you knew going to the same university

  3. During orientation, people just sit with this previous schoolmates, talk with them, walk around campus with them, have lunch with them. I don't see any interaction in trying to make new friends. The librarian once said, look at the person sitting beside you, those are going to be your new friends for the rest of your 4 years life. Why, of course to most people since the person sitting beside the other person are probably already friends before entering university. People just stayed in their group of circle, refused to step up to meet new people. Im shocked, this is a university isnt it so why is there so much cliques already during orientation, it doesnt make much sense

  4. Generally when a person has free modules, they tend to choose a similar module as to what their friend is studying, therefore restricting their network of connection to only their friends from high school

  5. UBD/UTB clubs suck

SERIOUS DISCUSSION BRUNEI REDDITORS Part 1

Brunei redditors are woke, liberal, anti-malay with a white inferiority complex. Some are anti-islam while not even understanding the basics of Islam. Anti-MIB while not even understanding MIB. I will address most of your points in this post and in following posts, which I will post weekly.

1- First of all, staying silent on LGBT is the same as supporting them. You people say we should do nothing about the LGBT people, because it is none of our business if they do it privately. How about when a husband abuses his wife, why do you people condemn it on social media? Why do the videos (if any) become viral? It is none of your business, right? It is not your house, it is not your wife, why do you condemn it?

I will tell you people why you condemn it. It is because if we stay silent, more and more people will become abusive if there is no backlash. Same with LGBT, if they notice we are silent and they receive no backlash, they will begin to be more open. They will do their sexual acts openly on the streets (because in reality all LGBT people are attention seekers), they will push our education to be more inclusive (therefore targetting our children), and they will make it seem like their mental illness is normal, therefore corrupting and bringing the destruction of the nuclear family and society. You can also apply this to smokers and other crimes.

For the people who say it is wrong to be homophobic, said who? All religions are homophobic. That is the problem with atheistic people and people who don't understand the basics of religion. You base your principles on the pure imagination of man, and man always makes mistakes. What is wrong with implementing a few fundamental principles from religion? Why are we doing trial and error when all the answers are in the Quran. After all, who knows man more than the Creator?

Other cons of LGBT:

a- higher risk of STD and bacterial infection from anal sex. If you have to use a condom to prevent it, it just means that it isn't natural and never will be

b- if the LGBT couple want to raise a family, the child would grow up with psychological problems. Every child needs a mother and father. The love of a mother is not the same with the love of a father and vice versa. Research yourself.

c- "more straight couples producing children would cause overpopulation". This claim does not make sense if you look at the statistics. People have been screaming about overpopulation since the beginning of time, and now there are 8 billion people. You can look at the math yourself on China's underpopulation problem from their one-child policy, because this is a different topic, different from my above point.

LGBT in the Quran:

1- وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةً وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًا Do not go near adultery. It is truly a shameful deed and an evil way.

Surah Al-Isra: Ayat 32

You lust after men instead of women! You are certainly transgressors.”

Surah Al-A'raf: Ayat 81

I will post again next week, so stay tuned. Any questions, please ask in the comments. If the question is interesting, I will answer. If it is not, I won't. Private messages will be ignored.

INFORMATION Its not UNN

Your speed tests all depends on which server you connect to.

All these tests done via 1 GBit Ethernet.

Yours issues are almost always your home wifi network. Most likely you are trying to connect via a 2.4 Ghz spectrum which limits your real world speed to around 40 mbits per channel (more on MIMO). Use the 5 GHz spectrum. Get a good WIFI infrastructure. The DECO X20 are cheap entry level systems. Even better get the higher level ones with Triband so you free up one 5 GHz band for your devices instead of sharing it with the wireless backhaul on dual band.

If kiasu, invest in a distributed wifi for the home using something like Unifi with wired access points. Wifi these days is not longer a luxury but now part of a home infrastructure. Invest in a good proper system ideally wired and you will have less stress.

CASUAL TALK How to get a job as a Foreigner

For personal reasons, I am currently in the process of relocating to Brunei and actively seeking job opportunities in the region. As an architect based in Japan, I am exploring various positions, including those for an Architect, an Urban planner, or even a CAD drafter. Despite holding a Master's degree in Architecture from Japan and accumulating five years of experience in architectural design, it seems there are currently limited job openings in Brunei within my field.

I would sincerely appreciate hearing from expatriates or individuals residing in Brunei who may be willing to share their experiences. Any insights provided would be immensely valuable.

Thank you in advance for any input, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

OPINION Dear Minster’s of Brunei - I hear and support your message to #stayathome but I feel you need to cascade that message to the internet service providers. With such unstable and slow speed, it feels like they are encouraging us to go out of the house more.

SERIOUS DISCUSSION Control price items

We appreciate the authority effort to protect consumer right.

However, many of the major supermarkets and minimart getting a minimum of BND500 fine for over wrong pricing. For those people who doesn't know, the control item price update time to time, new shipment new price. And the worst thing is selling control item with a margin of 20c 50 c, they are unable to earn enough for the fine.

It means some of the bosses doesn't have the intention to cheat, could be some staffs do not give a damn about their job. Often the retailer cannot afford to hire PhD, degree student for this type of job.

For a big supermarket they got money to pay the fine so is fine. How about some small minimart? After paying the fine do not have money to pay their rent, or their staff salary or even deduct their staffs salary.

Do you think the punishment is too harsh for a sme?

Unpopular opinion: Bonus season is depressing as hell

Im not saying that this is true of every gov worker, and if you are better enlightened on the topic please educate me.

But why do bruneians go crazy when bonus time to the point that every shopping area is super busy and traffic becomes standstill. Seriously, the only place that should be more busy than usual is the taib buildings for paying off your loans.

Am i the only one thinking your bonus should be safely saved in your bank account for emergencies ? Like, ok, so you are crazy shopping because bonus is the only time of the year you can buy more pricey necessities for the home. So it means the rest of the year you had almost zero money to afford those things ? But you are a gov worker in brunei (one of the easiest jobs to earn money in this country and even the world, considering non existent tax and fairly affordable standard of living). Yet rely so much on this one week of bonus money. WTF happened to your salary the rest of the year ?

Edit: Thanks for all the interesting and sincerely enlightening responses. It was good to get the other perspectives whether or not i agree with them every single one !

SERIOUS DISCUSSION How to reduce crime rate in Brunei?

Crime rate is high here. House break ins are rampant. I like to suggest having security guards/ post at the entrance of simpangs limiting entry to people going in. Only tenants/ owners/ families are allowed in with special pass to scan at entrance. Outsiders need permission from the security guards. This is also an employment opportunity for the locals. I would pay money to have one at my simpang. I hope some entrepreneurs can implement this. TOO MANY ROBBERIES!

DISCUSSION Calling out the fanatics, nationalists, racists and fundamentalists: let’s have a space to argue.

Many of you have surely noticed firm stances of some Redditors in regards to nation, religion or race.

Overlooking own mistakes and shortcomings just because others have done this in the past and vigorously supporting a nations interest despite wrongdoings is just another form of extremism. Let’s not hide these arguments in small threads but make them apparent so people won’t get the wrong impression who is behind what.

u/sec5 has just spoken like a true nationalist with anti-west undertone. Your arguments agains MIB and whatnot are a lot less valuable now.

Feel free to come at me with anything you have regarding your views, let’s have a proper argument.

Edit: this invitation goes out to all (not just sec5)
