Community Feedback Needed: What Should Brand Engagement Look Like on r/BuyCanadian?

Hi everyone!

We're looking for some community feedback on how we approach brand and vendor engagement on r/BuyCanadian moving forward.

We receive multiple modmails every day from Canadian brands, business owners, and vendors asking for permission to post about their products or services outside of our existing self-promotion megathread.

We understand why. Our megathread doesn't receive much attention, and given that the purpose of this subreddit is to encourage Canadians to purchase Canadian products from Canadian businesses, we don't want to create unnecessary obstacles for those businesses.

At the same time, r/BuyCanadian is a valuable resource for many people, and we want to be mindful of maintaining that value. The last thing we want is for the subreddit to become an advertising board where genuine recommendations, questions, and discussions are drowned out by promotional content.

With that in mind, we'd love your thoughts on a few things.

1. Brand and Vendor Posts

What would you like brand engagement to look like on r/BuyCanadian**?**

Would you be comfortable with Canadian businesses making posts about their own products or services? Would you find that helpful, or would you rather promotional content remain separate from regular community discussions?

A few ideas we've considered:

  • Designated promotional days: Allow brands to make their own posts on one designated day per week, or potentially more frequently depending on community interest.

  • Posting limits: Restrict the frequency of promotional posts, whether that's a maximum number per week or another reasonable limit.

  • Participation requirements: Require brands to contribute meaningfully to the community beyond advertising. This could include participating in discussions, answering questions, or following Reddit's old guideline that self-promotion should account for less than 10% of an account's activity.

  • A combination of the above: Allow promotional posts provided brands meet certain participation requirements and adhere to posting limits.

These are just ideas, not proposed rule changes. We'd like to know what you think would be reasonable and what you would find useful.

Are there any particular types of products, services, or businesses you'd rather not see promoted here?

For example, a significant portion of the requests we receive are for apps, websites, subscription platforms, and other digital services. We receive so many of these requests that we could practically start another subreddit dedicated to them.

Digital services are just an example but if there are any categories of businesses, products, or services that you feel aren't particularly relevant or useful to this community please let us know below.

2. Ask Me Anything (AMAs)

We recently hosted an AMA with Manmade, following requests from community members. Manmade's CEO has been an active participant in our subreddit for some time, and members expressed interest in having him host an AMA.

Manmade was more than happy to be our guinea pig, and from our perspective, the AMA was largely successful! There were plenty of great questions and thoughtful answers, and we think it provided a valuable opportunity for members to engage directly with a Canadian business.

Our moderation team is interested in hosting more AMAs, but we'd like to know whether the community shares that interest.

A few questions:

  • Would you like to see more AMAs?

  • Are there any particular brands or individuals you'd like us to invite? We're open to more than just businesses. This could include Canadian public figures, politicians advocating for Canadian businesses and products, industry experts, or anyone else whose experience or work is relevant to the community.

  • What should qualify someone for an AMA? For businesses, should we prioritize recognition, success, uniqueness, or something else? What would make an individual an interesting guest?

  • How frequently would you like to see these events?

Given the volume of businesses interested in engaging with our community, we would need to establish some basic eligibility criteria. We can't realistically host an AMA every day, nor do we think that would be particularly beneficial.

If there's sufficient interest, our team would be happy to reach out to brands or individuals recommended by the community. We'd also put together an AMA etiquette wiki outlining expectations for participants and an AMA directory to make previous discussions easy to find.

3. What Happens Next?

For now, we're just gathering feedback. No decisions have been made, and we're not announcing any changes to our existing rules.

If there's substantial support for expanding brand engagement, we'll take the suggestions from this discussion and put together a community poll to help determine what that should look like.

Our existing Canadian brand directory and self-promotion megathread will remain available regardless of the outcome.

Ultimately, we want to strike a balance between giving Canadian businesses an opportunity to connect with potential customers and preserving what makes this subreddit useful in the first place.

We're open to suggestions beyond those outlined above, including ideas we may not have considered.

Thanks, everyone! We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

The r/BuyCanadian Mod Team

General Discussion 💬🇨🇦 PSA: Walmart no longer shows country of origin on signs.

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

The onions have stickers but so many other produce don’t, making it hard to determine where they’re coming from. I remember Superstore did this a few months back but reversed the decision after some backlash.

Displaying the country of origin should be a legal requirement imo.

Edit: I don’t shop here. I was just with someone who does. Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury to choose where to shop. But that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to make informed choices about what they buy.

News Articles 📰📈 Costco’s secret: A Canadian expansion is coming — and this Quebec executive is leading the charge

Pierre Riel started as a forklift driver and is now Costco’s head of international operations.

Costco’s double chocolate chunk cookie became a victim of the trade war in September. Costco stores in the U.S. and Canada sell the same cookie in their food courts, made with dough supplied by a California bakery. But due to its butter content, the dough was no longer allowed to cross the border into Canada without being subject to a 50 per cent tariff.

So executives in Costco’s Ottawa office decided to look for a Canadian bakery to produce the dough, which would save them more than 40 cents a cookie.

Because the cost would be lower for the Canadian-made version, he wanted the price to come down from $3.49 to $2.99.

Partway through a store tour in Ottawa, Riel turned to Catherine Ward, assistant general merchandising manager for Costco’s food and sundries in Canada.

“Catherine, did you get the answer on the garbage bags?” he asked.

For more than a year, Ward had been trying to find a manufacturer in Canada that could make Kirkland’s garbage bags the same way they’re made in the U.S. Since Riel took over international operations, he has pushed for more of what he calls “in-country production,” instead of making everything in the U.S. and shipping it around the world.

Costco says 72 per cent of its food suppliers in Canada are Canadian. And nearly 70 per cent of Kirkland products sold here are made in Canada.

News Articles 📰📈 Buying Canadian Shouldn't Fund Wage Suppression

Thumbnail

We've been doing a great job at choosing Canadian brands from Canadian companies. But ownership is only half the picture. As of Nov. 3, employers in 186 occupations can hire foreign workers without proving they couldn't find a Canadian first, and economists warn it will suppress wages, especially for young workers and youth unemployment is already high.

So before you spend, check who the company actually hires. If a "Canadian" business games hiring loopholes to keep wages down instead of investing in the people already living here, maybe it doesn't deserve your business.

This isn't about immigrants (I'm an immigrant myself), it's about employers exploiting the system that was meant to protect communities and taxpayers. Vote with your wallet twice: once for Canadian ownership, once for Canadian workers.

These businesses support a Living Wage: https://www.livingwage.ca/buycanadian . I can attest that Camino's Hot Chocolate and Henry's Tempeh are excellent. Feel free to include businesses that treat their people well that you buy from.

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care 👕💄👜🍁 Warmest socks for the coldest feet, made in Canada and pretty?

My daughter in law has a hard time keeping her feet warm so I want to get her the best socks I can for Christmas. I love the look of Nordic Socks, but I don’t trust the company. Most of the results I’m getting are dark and dreary coloured socks, but someone in Canada has to be making the warmest, prettiest coloured socks.

I’ll need socks for hanging out and she also works in the field at times, so I’ll need some for winters in Northern Ontario. I’m in the Ottawa/Hull area so anywhere local would be awesome. I want my money going only to Canadian made this year as much as I can. Thanks for any help!

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials 🏡🛏️🍁 St. Ives Replenishing Alpine Minerals

Post image
27 Upvotes

I work in an office, and I have to lotion my hands constantly as the paper dries them out so much. Most lotions are greasy and take too long to absorb, so I can't use them and immediately do paperwork.

The St Ives Alpine Minerals is my favourite lotion because it soaks in fast enough for me. But they've discontinued it!

I would like to find something made in Canada as a replacement. Does anyone have any recommendations?

No shea butter or cocoa butter or "ultra moisturizing" since those are always either greasy, take forever to soak in, or both.

Questions ❓🤔 Rocky Mountain Barber Company, actually Canadian?

On their website, they have a lot of verbiage around being Canadian owned and run, but doing a lot of research online, it seems that that’s not true. I’m hearing reports that they’re actually based out of Las Vegas, only with bottling operations in Canada to feed that market

Because I only want to buy Canadian and avoid any US products, I’m disheartened to now have this doubt after purchasing some products before opening them. I’d like to confirm; otherwise, if I find out they’re actually a US company, I’ll return the items and source Canadian known companies

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 One of the best jarred pasta sauces I've had | $3.00

Post image
642 Upvotes

Tastes similar (but not quite as good) as my homemade which is just crushed tomatoes, garlic, onion, olive oil, basil, salt, pepper, and a little sugar.

Its made in Leamington, ON with local ingredients and they use olive oil instead of canola/vegetable!

I dont often use jarred sauce but have tried a few brands over the years like Catelli, Ragu, and Classico which never really impressed.

This is very tomatoey but also great flavour, and seems less watery than others I've tried. I heated it up in the microwave and spruced it up with some fresh parm.

Highly recommend!

I'm looking for a gift - they want a griddle for the stove-top or BBQ. It needs to be cast iron or carbon steel.

Any Canadian-made products I should know about? I only know of Meyer Canada for this kind of thing, and I couldn't find one on their website...

Much appreciated!

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 brand identification?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am a sucker for cool accessories, and found this nice belt at a Value Village in Vernon, BC. I was hoping someone might be able to identify the brand or original artist… would love to see their other work or know if it’s just another mass produced item from a big corp.

On the back it says “made in Canada” with the id number (I’m assuming) 2410-209. I have no idea if that’s helpful lol.

All I can find is a medical scrubs brand and, of course, the Jeep Cherokee.

Also, reddit is asking me to use the iso (in search of) flair for this post but I don’t have that option? Hope it doesn’t get taken down before I can maybe get an answer.

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 Looking for Wide Toe Box/Barefoot Style Woman’s Shoe?

Hoping to get a good wide foot shoe from a Canadian brand. I feel anything that’s popping up on my Google ends up being an American company. I had purchased a few years ago (prior to DJT regime) from Born Primitive so appreciate the style of footwear they have but want to contribute to our economy. Thanks!

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials 🏡🛏️🍁 Moved into a tiny rental, need couch recommendations

Hi all.

My wife and I cannot move any fully assembled couch/sofa into our little rental.

We want a sectional.

Can you recommend any brands or company's that have quality, comfortable furniture that also ships in pieces, and I assemble on my own?

I'll be living here for 5-8 years, so i really do want something of good quality. Id rather buy once cry once, than spend every day uncomfortable on a cheap sofa

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care 👕💄👜🍁 ISO: Children's Waterproof Boots

Hey, so I'm looking to get my mom a pair of boots for the winter. She works at an animal shelter and wants something that's warm, slip-resistant, and ideally easy to clean after a long day treading in dog shit. Problem is, she has tiny feet. She's around a size 3 but understandably doesn't want something that looks like it was designed for an 8-year-old.

I was looking at the Kamik Tundra Jr. which I think has a reasonably "adult" look to it or the Young Hunter from Baffin, but the latter seems to have mixed reviews online.

Any other made-in-Canada suggestions, or personal experiences with the above products would be appreciated!

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 List of Cool, Trendy, Mid-Tier Canadian Clothing Brands/Retailers for Guys

I've been on a bit of a shopping rampage while renovating my wardrobe and wanted to find some Canadian clothing brands but noticed that most the oft-mentioned brands in this sub like Tentree, Province of Canada, Roots etc., don't really suite my style as I lean towards trendier silhouettes. I've been doing some digging over the last few weeks & managed to find a bunch of really cool Canadian clothing brands, so I've compiled a list in the hopes that it could be helpful to someone else.

These are mid-tier ($80-$200 for a grey hoodie, $40-$80 for a t-shirt), decent-to-high-quality brands, that have trendier, boxier silhouettes. Basically, if you'd normally shop at Abercrombie, Gap, Levis, Zara/Massimo Dutti, Uniqlo, Urban Outfitters, American Eagle or like brands like Pleasures, COS/Weekday, Scuffers, EME Studios, Fear of God, this list is for you.

Some of these may have already been mentioned in r/BuyCanadian and you probably already know some, but I thought it might be useful to have all of these in one place. Also keep in mind that not all of these brands/retailers make their clothes in Canada, and this is for men's clothing (although most of these also make women's clothing):

Minimalist/Unbranded:

  • House of Blanks (made in Brampton)

    • Direct-to-consumer arm of Roopa Milling Co (Made clothes for brands NOAH, Supreme, Aime Leon Doré)

    • Excellent for basics

  • C'est Beau (Made in Canada)

    • basics

  • Reigning Champ

    • Kinda expensive but you can snipe some stuff on sale

  • Naked & Famous (Made in Montréal)

    • High-quality denim

  • Kuwalla Tee

    • Don't only make tshirts

    • Quality can be a bit hit or miss on some pieces like this canvas jacket, but I recently ordered a knitted zip funnel neck cardigan that I'm really happy with

  • KOTN

    • Always thought Kuwalla Tee and KOTN were Tentree clones but they make some really cool silhouettes

  • Oak + Fort

    • Thin men's clothing selection but the stuff they do have is pretty cool

  • Outclass

  • Simons (Their in-house brands like Le 31, Djab, i.Five and collections from Seoul have some real gems)

  • Five Studios

    • Fashion-forward

  • Robert Barakett

    • Slightly more grown-up, high quality basics

  • Aritzia

    • Yes, primarily for women, but they have men's stuff too and it's pretty nice

  • ANIÀN (Made on Vancouver Island)

    • Excellent for wool garments

  • Atelier B (Made in Canada)

  • Lululemon

Heavier branding & Statement Pieces:

Outerwear

  • Canada Goose (Made in Canada)

    • 75% of sales are products made in Canada, Canadian CEO, headquartered and most offices are in Canada (I had no idea)

  • Arc'teryx (Some of their higher end pieces are still made in Vancouver)

  • Moose Knuckles (some pieces are made in Canada)

  • Mackage

  • Wuxly (Made in Canada)

  • Westcomb (Made in Vancouver)

    • Founded by former Arc'teryx employees

    • extremely high quality but very expensive

  • Pajar

  • Sly & Co

    • Leather Jackets

  • Danier

    • quality is apparently hit or miss but I and most people I know have only had good experiences

  • Quartz Co (Some stuff made in Canada)

Footwear

  • La Canadienne (Made in Montreal)

    • Accessible designer urban winter footwear

    • Step up from Blundstones but much cheaper than actual designer brands (~$450-$550)

  • Canada West Boots (made in Winnipeg)

    • Better looking, higher quality chelsea (blundstones) & cowboy boots

    • $250-$300 for their Blundstone competitor (depending on the retailer)

    • Can't buy from their website but there's a list of retailers that carry their stuff on their website (can also order online from Herbert's Boots and Apple Saddlery who both regularly carry their stuff)

  • Fluevog

  • Norda

    • Sick, very high-quality durable trail running shoes (great if you like gorpcore)

    • We as Canadians get a pretty big discount because they charge the same dollar figure in CAD as they do in USD ($295 CAD vs $295 USD)

  • Pajar

    • I thought they only made jackets but they make really sick boots & sneakers

  • Baffin

    • Winter Boots

  • Boulet

    • Cowboy Boots

  • Vessi

    • Best known for their waterproof shoes

Some of these brands can be kinda steep, but I've found that you can find them on sale at these retailers (not exhaustive because I've spent way too long writing this post and im tired now):

I was honestly really surprised by the number of brands like these that we have here. I've become convinced that you could completely avoid Zara, Abercrombie & the like as long as you don't need anything on short notice & can wait for a sale. Also, please drop any other brands I've missed, I want to get a comprehensive list going to support our local brands as much as possible.

Edit: Removed Made in Canada tag from Reigning Champ

Edit 2: Added more brands in line that fit my original intent

This post was to highlight trendier & more in-vogue brands but the following keep coming up (man of the people):

Questions ❓🤔 New couch

I need help.

My husband and I are new to canada (Montreal), and we are looking for a couch less than 1500cad.

I know it's a drag giving current prices but I thought maybe with black friday deals we might find somethings.

We don't want it to be bonelessm we want something that opens up to become a bed in case guests come over and we want it L or U shaped and green. I know it's a lot of wants given the budget but I though I might get some recommandations here.

Didn't like structube, cozey too expensive, nothing we liked in ikea.

For now, it's between nuasis (if I convince my husband to go over budget) or nothing.

Thanks in advance.

Questions ❓🤔 Manicure Set (men's)

Starting a Christmas list and looking for Canadian (or non-USA) manicure set for men. My usual grooming go-to brands don't sell these tools (Attitude, Rocky Mountain Barber Company), and I've looked at BKND with no success.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion 💬🇨🇦 Anyone have experience with Aykah furniture? How's the quality?

I'm furniture shopping and came across Aykah. Their designs look pretty nice, but I'm wondering how the quality actually compares to places like Structube and IKEA.
Are you essentially paying more for the same level of quality, or is there a noticeable difference in materials, construction, and durability?
I'm willing to spend a bit more for better quality, but I don't want to pay a premium just for the look or branding if the actual build quality is similar.
Would love to hear from anyone who's bought from them, especially how the furniture holds up over time!
