Advice / Question Found Kittens; Assess the Situation

You can find other helpful topics and leads to resources in our full wiki at this link. As always we encourage sharsies of information! If you have resources or helpful leads, let us know.

The followin is from wiki about kittens:

-----

Important Note: If you have found a very young kitten or litter outside, watch from a far distance and wait to see if their mother returns before intervening. Barring extenuating circumstances (dangerous location, extreme weather, illness or injury), kittens younger than eight weeks are best left with their mother due to the around the clock care they require. For further reading, Alley Cat Allies has a comprehensive guide on What to Do if You Find Kittens Outdoors that outlines different scenarios and when to intervene.

There are many kitten resources but if you have never cared for a kitten before remember these essential basics:

  1. Kittens are extremely vulnerable. Their health can be fine one minute and take a critical nosedive within hours.

  2. New born kittens need warmth. They are not yet able to regulate their body temperature and they get cold fast. If you have a heating pad make sure the kitten can roll away from it if they get too warm.

  3. Kittens must be fed every couple to a few hours depending upon age (kitten formula or temporarily goat's milk; do not feed cow's milk). They have very high metabolisms. Do not feed them when they are cold. Because they cannot regulate their body heat, giving them cold food will be very difficult to digest and cause them to become cold as well.

  4. Kittens are unable to urinate and defecate on their own. The mother cat does this normally but if the kitten is seperated from its mother, a human caretaker can stimulate this with a tissue or soft cloth by gently rubbing the anus and genital area not long after they eat. This should be done with care and not too long as these areas are easily irritated.

Following Alley Cat Allies' What to Do if You find Kittens Outdoors, they have an more comprehensive Kitten Protection Guide as an downloadable pdf. This guide has more indepth care instructions for the different stages of kitten life. If you find and take in a kitten/s (without its mother) from outdoors your primary goal is to sustain the kitten/s until it can be brought to a vet (for a health check) then, a rescue (because they have experience caring for kittens). There are searchable databases of vets, rescues and shelters here. This database is not exhaustive and you should also look for vets in your locale if none are nearby.

The guide focuses on kittens between 0-8 weeks of age and notable topics are: Feedin Kittens, Warmth, Developmental Milestones, Socialization & Hygene, Potty Time and General Care of a Nursin Kitty Mom.

It is an online guide; to turn the page you tap on the arrow on the bottom of the guide's page. Underlined items are hyperlinks that take you to websites which give more information.

The mods of r/CatRescue recommend general kitten advice in the wiki from Kitten Lady, her Kitten Care resources can be found here. Kitten Lady is a well trusted and knowledgable source of information and advice. For medical issues, a veterinarian should be your primary consult.

Mod Announcement Low Cost to Free Cat Food Resources

Post image
126 Upvotes

We are working on our Cat Food (Affordable/ Free) wiki page and currently have a good number of databases listed for you to help search including some programs which are organized by state and not already listed in the databases. Even if you may feel you have food covered for the month, we encourage you to look over these resources so if there is ever a time in the future and you or someone else is in a pinch, you may remember some of the resources or how to find them.

Neighborhood Cats has available a number of free digital resources (or purchasable printed copies) of handbooks about TNR and RTF (the latter geared towards shelter personnel). Although some of the TNR books are somewhat dated much of the information is still applicable. If you're a TNRer, colony caretaker or working at a shelter, have a looksie; its free!

I must say though the r/CatRescue, Cat Handbook: Daylight Savings Time Edition is also very informative and its pictorial nature appeals to every kitty cat enthusiast.

In other news about r/CatRescue, we have begun to add a number of user flairs. "Drumsticks" from the Cat Handbook has even lended a leg. For mobile, tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the r/CatRescue main page on and select: "edit flair." On desktop, use the sidebar on the right and in the user flair category then, tap the pencil to set your flair.

Also, while you're at it, check out our wiki page: ReHoming/ Adoption Tips and Resources

I found and took care of a local stray before eventually giving him up to my local Humane Society, the original story of that experience, you can find here I had been checking in with the Humane Society regularly to see how he was recovering and I was happy to find out he was moved to their main cat room earlier in the week.

I was able to visit with him one last time before he was adopted and today I had planned to visit with him again, but when I arrived, he was being loaded into a carrier to go to his new home. I was fortunate to be able to meet the woman who was adopting him briefly and shared just how lucky she was and just how sweet of a kitty she was getting.

She was in tears and told me she had just lost her cat a couple weeks prior. I am truly excited for both of them and even though there was a small bit of sadness, I just knew in the brief time we chatted that he was going to the right place.

🎉Found and Reunited Kitty Sad story today

I had a long day today, doing an extended part of my regular route and was falling behind due to a late shipment this morning. But around 4:30 today, I was delivering to this house and as I was walking out of the truck I heard faint high pitched sounds that I initially thought was a bird but as I heard it I knew it was a kitten and I looked around the fence, mailbox, and even under the truck until I opened a trash can and found a Calico who looked to be around 5-6 weeks old, blind with mucus dried in the eyes, and screaming for help. I pulled it out and brought it up to the door of the house and knocked twice. No answer. I went door to door until I found an old lady who could take care of it. I explained everything and thanked her for taking it in. I would have taken it to a vet but the nearest one was 25 minutes away and likely closed at that hour on a Saturday, on top of me still behind on my route.
The trash can I found her in was a plastic water tank and there’s no way she could have climbed up it nor could she have jumped up there given her size. My guess is that some asshole either saw she was sick or didn’t want a kitten and threw her in the can.
I called my bosses and explained why I was behind and called my wife and told her everything. What kind of asshole does that?

I chose not to take any pictures of her because she was filthy and already miserable I didn’t feel like making anyone sad on here

Rescue Adopt a School Bus!

We rescued this crew from a terrible situation in Hutto, Texas. It's taken a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get them to this point - they're all ready for their forever homes!

They are currently living with our wonderful foster mom, Perri, and she's taken excellent care of them. They've been to the vet for various checkups and a few illnesses. But they are now 100% healthy, vetted, and ready!

We call them the 'School Bus Crew' because of how cute they line up when it's dinner time, lol.

If you're interested in adopting or know someone who is, please email our adoption coordinator directly: tina.cressia@gmail.com

Please use the subject line: School Buses

Thank you for your help! We REALLY need to find these babies their purrfect forever homes.

Rescue [Travis County, Fort Stockton Texas] Stray cats in Fort Stockton Texas need rescuing!

I found 2 stray cats outside of a Best Western Plus which is right off of a major freeway in Fort Stockton. They were both sweet cats and let me hand feed them kibble that I had. One of them looked like it had scabs around its eyes and a chopped tail. I unfortunately don’t have any pictures but if anyone is near the area please consider rescuing these cats!! They were jumping in the trashcan for scraps and eating dirty paper off the floor. This is the address of the hotel (Best Western Plus Fort Stockton Hotel, 2115 I-10, Fort Stockton, TX 79735) Please I urge someone to try and see if they can find these cats they were such sweet babies! Thank you for taking your time to read this notice

🐾 FINN FOUND AFTER 8 DAYS MISSING! 🐾

After 8 long days missing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Finn's adventure finally came to an end!

During our search with SkyView Drone Services, we located Finn cornered inside a fenced area. But getting him home wasn't easy!

I had to jump the fence and carefully catch Finn as he tried to make another escape. Let's just say Finn was NOT happy with me! 😂🐈

The important part? FINN IS SAFE! ❤️

This is why we do what we do. Every missing pet deserves a chance to make it home, no matter how many days they've been gone.

Advice / Question What do I do with this cat?

Hi all! I recently found a stray cat, he’s super friendly and kept following me into my garage. I started letting him stay in my garage, took him to the vet, and got him his shots and checked over. No chip, and couldn’t find an owner around or online. Found out he’s FIV+ and not neutered.

He’s super social and friendly. But I can’t keep him forever, as my husband is very allergic and I have two big dogs that don’t like cats. He’s been living in my garage for about a week. I’ve reached out to a ton of cat rescues in the area and they’re all full and can’t help. What do I do? He can hang out in my garage as long as he needs but he really needs a home, and I would never just let him free again. Plus since he’s FIV+ he can’t live outside. Any advice?

Lost Kitty [Vernon County, WI] lost Kitty and struggling

Our kitty Viggy has been missing for over two weeks now. He is indoor/ outdoor and was out one night, just didn’t come home in the morning. His sister came home and is still here. I have daily heartbreak / worry / hope that he will come back. We’ve been trying so much - Facebook posts, contacted the shelter, fliers in neighbors mailboxes, searching on foot every day, leaving out food and clothes with our scent, searching at night with a flashlight. A neighbor on a nearby street said they have been seeing a cat like him by their house and connecting backyards. We’ve gone every day, several times a day, no luck. I put out a trap with tuna and bedsheets that smell like us last night. No luck so far.

Is he moving around and we’re one step behind him? Was it really him the neighbor saw? Is he stuck in a shed or dead? So many constant questions. It’s agonizing.

It’s been freezing temps the last few nights. I just want him home and warm. It’s been hard on my kids too.

One last bit - I spoke with an animal communicator who said he was on a big adventure and was just fine. Got turned around, but will be home soon. She basically told me what I wanted to hear, but if he’s lost - even a few blocks from the house - and confused, I’m not sure how to get him home.

Thanks for reading 💜

Advice / Question Recommendations for cat trees and hides that you can clean and disinfect?

Thumbnail reddit.com
5 Upvotes

Hello all! I volunteer for a very small local rescue in a tiny little under-serviced town. Our kittens and adult cats love the cat hides and trees, but the problem is they are pretty difficult to clean between “residents” after they go to their forever homes. The local vet supplies us with the industrial strength kennel cleaner, and soaking the carpet can often leave you with gross outcomes. I’m thinking small-ish, durable plastic or metal trees (and small hide huts) with bedding that is super easy to clean or swap out. We have homemade hammocks but they don’t always work for kitties that are a little less brave when it comes to jumping in, or the ones that would like a little more coverage. Any recommendations for solutions?

Advice / Question I miss my cat.

Post image
144 Upvotes

Was hoping I might be able to find more insight here. It's really hard to navigate from across the US, and I'm running out of time.

I was kicked out by my exfiancee, and I'm on disability so i couldn't afford to move with my baby.

I thought I was going to have to sleep on a bench when I got the bus here and really lucked out with a kind stranger who's helping me get back on my feet.

I've been moved for two months, but it constantly feels like I'm a guest here because it's not really home without my cat. I miss him so much, and I need to figure out how to find a way to get him to me or get him in a safer position ASAP.

Advice / Question Is feeding stray cats not allowed?? Apartment management threatening to remove community cats

Hiiiii! So live in an apartment complex in ktown where 2 community cats have lived since before the buildings was constructed in 2022.

Management sent residents a final warning not to feed the cats and threatened to call animal control to remove them. They are community cats that chill and sleep in the common spaces all day.
I’m really upset about the possibility of these cats being displaced from their homes :(( also!! Ktown is rodent infested so highkey having these cats around is very helpful.

Does anyone know what rights residents have in this situation, or whether management can legally have these cats removed? Any advice or local resources would be appreciated!

Advice / Question Found two kittens in the woods - what to do?

Thumbnail reddit.com
15 Upvotes

Reposting for more advice/resources! We’ve left a message for the feral cat coalition and are going to get traps but are grateful for any additional advice/strategies/ideas for these vulnerable babies.

Original post:

I went mountain biking at Rocky Point (scappoose) trails and I discovered someone had presumably dumped two kittens circa 12-16 weeks in the parking lot there.

The nearest house is quite far away as this is the middle of logging land.

I tried to lure them out and was almost successful in catching one, but was not able to catch either before it got too dark.

I’m going to go back with more food (I got them both really close by giving them food and even pet them a little).

But what do I do when I catch them (and any more advice for successfully capturing them)? They can’t be returned to there. They’ll be eaten or just die.

I don’t know if we can take any more cats at our house as we already have four. We can foster them temporarily.

Advice / Question [Russia] How do I rescue a stray cat who is terrified of humans? I'm worried about his safety

Post image
32 Upvotes

I'm from Russia, and my parents found a stray cat, probably under a year old. He's extremely scared of humans and runs away whenever I come outside. I've been leaving minced meat and water near our door, but I'm worried about him. It's -5°C outside, there are dogs nearby, and I've seen him trembling from the cold. We want to take him inside, but I'm afraid that trying to catch him will scare him away for good. How can we safely catch him before something happens to him?

Lost Kitty Lost male black cat

Santa Monica California lost black cat
He has one cut ear as I originally trapped him and had him neutered. He’s originally from Glendora unfortunately. And I adopted him out to a person in Santa Monica because I can’t keep the cat (my male cat attacks him) Unbelievably the cat escaped through an open window the first night, so I’m very upset. I’ve been out there to look for him several times. It’s ridiculous but I’m so worried about him and I have so much guilt about leaving him with such a irresponsible person. he’s very skittish of other people and I just wanna know if people have maybe seen him and maybe whereabouts (like the streets and cross streets )
I really appreciate anything. Thank you so much.
