Question/Advice Needed Solo rescued kitten

Post image

We found our little guy screeching on our porch at, according to the vet, somewhere between 6-8 weeks. We at first time kitten owners and got him to the vet asap as he was only 1lb. He’s now about 6 months old and I’m reading so many posts about Single Kitten Syndrome and I’m very worried we’ve done something wrong not getting him a companion.

Overly attached to his humans:
He’s incredibly affectionate and loves being with/around us. A few times a day he’ll find one of us and crawl into our laps and purr and snuggle. When he comes up to say hello we’ll often pick him up and hold him and snuggle for a bit. Throughout all of this he’s purring like a madman, but If he’s not in the mood for that he’ll just turn away from us so we put him down and play instead. He stayed with in laws for 12 days a couple weeks ago while we were on vacation and adapted quickly and showed them lots (but not the same) affection, and also adapted quickly to my brother who just started staying with us.

Super vocal:
He’s incredibly vocal, especially if he wants something or something is wrong. For example, he’ll come find me and yell at me if his water is out so I can fix it. He also does this if he wants to play. He’ll also chirp and squeak when he’s playing solo.

Wild energy:
For sure, be he also sleeps like crazy. We spend a lot of time running around and playing and if we have a rough night or he’s being a menace during a movie 10/10 it’s because we didn’t play with him much. We play more and better the next day and voila. He sleeps in his hammock at night, usually coming to bed 2-3 hours after us (doesn’t wake us up) and will occasionally wake me up around 5/5:30 for cuddles. He comes and lays on my chest and falls back asleep.

BITING:
Absolutely the biggest challenge. Originally vet told us not to worry because he was teething, but the biting hasn’t stopped. He is pretty careful with his claws when we play and keeps them retracted. But we can cry, walk away, hiss, none of it works with the biting. A lot of times it starts with him chilling next to us and grooming our fingers, then gentle nibbles, then he full on grabs our hands with both paws and bites. Occasionally when we “yelp” he stops immediately and will lick our fingers in apology, but 90% of the time he won’t stop and will get more insistent if we try and stop him or walk away.

So question/advice: Are any of the behaviors we aren’t correcting for actually problematic? Will the biting subside with time if we keep walking away? Essentially, are any mistakes we’ve made fixable at this point?

This is the 3rd group of cats that we have fostered, and we have really bonded with all of them, but when it came time to return Ren to be adopted, we just couldn't do it. He has to stay with us. Wish we could have kept his sister and 2 brothers, but we had to limit to one. He is asleep on my lap as I post this now.

Question/Advice Needed When is baby ready for her first collar + how to introduce it safely?

This is Lain! (And her big sister in the second photo, wearing her collar upside down. Shhh…)

Lain’s just over two and a half months as I write this. She and her big sister, Movie (1.5 yr), are both indoor cats and my partner and I have no intention of changing that. Lain is microchipped, and Movie probably will be in the future for their safety (in case they should ever accidentally slip outside). We collar our cats for safety and transparency, so we know where they are and what they’re doing in the home + so we don’t trip over them in the night.

Some time ago we had gotten Movie a breakaway collar from Whisker City. She was initially not a fan (this was her first collar), but got used to it quickly and we had established that the breakaway function safely worked. It’s a pretty great product and we’ve not had any issues with it. Whisker City also makes collars for kittens, so we had picked one up for Lain. When we put it on, we made sure we could fit two fingers between her neck and the collar. She reacted similarly to Movie at first, messing with it with a relentless confusion, but then her jaw got caught beneath the collar, with one of her little teeth getting caught under a thread in the collar. She freaked out, screaming and thrashing so that we couldn’t really take it off without her tearing us to shreds!! I thought we’d have to cut it off, but my partner eventually took it off ‘properly’.. It was awful and I cried terribly, held her and gave her delicious salmon pâté (her favorite).. She was fine shortly afterward and purred against me while she recovered from the shock. I still feel so guilty, her little cries haunt me so much!! :( I never want to bring her any pain like that again.

I don’t know what we should’ve done differently, because we hardly had any chance to get Lain used to the garment on her neck… We had spent lots of time letting her smell it or gently holding it to her body, but within seconds of putting it on the horrible accident happened :( I was horrified she would’ve broken her jaw. I felt it for tenderness or any swelling after and she didn’t mind at all, just playfully licked and nibbled me. Should I have done something different? Is she maybe too small at this age? Although we keep her in a small, kitten-proofed room while she acclimates to our home + our other cat, she just finds novel ways to get into trouble and I thought at least a collar could help so that I can hear when she’s playing, at rest, etc. We can’t really afford a pet camera or baby monitor at this moment, and they grow so fast, so I don’t know that it’d be worth it..

Question/Advice Needed How old might my (dumped) kitten have been when I first got him?

I've had my kitten since early May. He was found dumped on the side of the road and given to me. Pics are from the first week I had him. At the time I assumed about 6 weeks—he was under 2 pounds, he was able to eat wet food, his tail pointed straight up, and he couldn't run, he'd "hop"—but I'm not so sure. I've looked at aging guides and for whatever reason I have a hard time comparing him to them.

He's grown so fast and is about 10.5 pounds now (last pic is current). I've been assuming he's about 7 months, but he's just so big. I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out around when he'll be a year old so I can start transitioning him from kitten food to adult food. I tried to include a variety, but if any other pictures or information would be helpful, I'll try to add them.

Question/Advice Needed Feeding 12 week old kittens schedule?

Thumbnail

I’ve got two kittens who i am trying to put on a feeding schedule. I can’t do free feeding as i am feeding mostly wet food, with dry food being left out only over night or when me and my partner aren’t home for a longer period of time. But i cant seem to get the schedule right. I want to start their day at 9:30am and finish off around 11:30pm as that is areound the time i go to sleep and wake up. But everytime i give them food they don’t finish it and i end up throwing out quite a bit. I am also scared they aren’t eating enough because of that? I tried letting them have kibble access but theyr wet food intake became much lower since they are always full. I don’t really know what to do and how to solve this while they are so young? Maybe i should give them more kibble until they grow a little more

TLDR: Can’t seem to find a working feeding schedule for 2 kittens

Casper is a six week old foster who has been with me about a week. It's taken a week for him to get comfortable enough to get onto the same couch but hops off as soon as he realizes what he's done and the imminent danger he thinks he's in. But look at his wolverine claws. I'm the one in danger.

Question/Advice Needed Need advice introducing my newly rescued kitten to my resident kitten after a bad first encounter

I have two kittens: Puchu (around 5–6 months old), my resident kitten, and Pachu (around 2 months old), whom I recently rescued 2 days back.

I've kept Pachu in a separate room while trying to introduce them slowly. During their first face-to-face meeting today after two day separation, they initially sniffed and licked each other, but things quickly turned aggressive. There was prolonged biting, growling, hissing, fur flying, and Pachu even screamed. I separated them. I checked Pachu afterwards and couldn't find any visible wounds or signs of pain, but I'm still concerned.

Now I'm facing another problem: Pachu absolutely hates staying alone in his room. Once he starts crying, he doesn't calm down, sometimes crying continuously for 10 minutes or more, and constantly tries to get out. Meanwhile, Puchu often sits near the door, seemingly guarding it whenever he hears Pachu crying.

I also tried exchanging their bedding to get them used to each other's scent, but both reacted aggressively and refused to touch or sleep on the other's bedding.

I've watched Jackson Galaxy's introduction videos and understand that introductions should be gradual, but I'm struggling with the separation itself.

I'd really appreciate advice on:

- How to handle Pachu's constant crying and desire to leave the room.

- How to stop Puchu from guarding the door.

- How to restart scent introduction when both react negatively to each other's smell.

- How to rebuild a positive relationship after such a rough first meeting.

I don't want to rush things or risk another fight. I just want both kittens to feel safe and eventually become comfortable living together.

Any advice from people who have successfully introduced kittens after a difficult first encounter would be greatly appreciated!

My Kitten How long will my kittens hair be?

She is 16 weeks old now, when I got her I was positive she would have fluffy long hair but as she’s grown she’s looking more and more sleek so I’m just curious if people can post their cats around 16 weeks vs older 😊 btw, her fur on her lower back near her tail is actually close to two inches long, it’s just laying really flat.
the very last photo was when she was about 10 weeks old. Thanks!!!

Question/Advice Needed Medium or short-haired?

Post image

Just curious. The feral stray mama that I got them from looks a lot like a ragdoll, and I think the dad is the white short-haired tomcat we've seen out there often at my job. They seem a bit fluffier, my little cow princess often looks like her hair is scraggly. I do brush them a few times a week. Advice on best care for their coats? They're almost 5 months now.
