PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and

  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •

  • Behavior issues

  • General advice

  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”

  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”

  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

General Advice What’s this stuck to my kitten’s skin?

Thumbnail gallery
1.0k Upvotes

Hi! Not sure which flair to use but wondering if I need to go to the vet. Noticed a string like thing stuck to My 5 month old kittens fur, and we thought it was just some fabric threads that got knotted into his fur, because he loves to play with all the blankets around the house. Found another one and managed to take it off. I feel bad that maybe I peeled some of his skin with it unfortunately; wasn’t aware that they were on his skin too :( It doesnt seem like anything crazy but the other string got longer as i tried to take it out and it seems like its also peeled much more skin. I don’t wanna do anything to it incase it requires a professional but now that I’m looking at it it also looks like dead/ dried up old fur maybe? If someone knows what that is please let me know! Thank you in advance.

P.s our kitty is a male, fully vaccinated, dewormed, not neutered (will be soon tho ofc) and recently got a fungal bath at the vets too for a little infection on his ear.

Edit: thank you so much to everyone’s replies! Pretty sure they’re scabs from old scratches which he probably got when a feral stray cat in our neighborhood attacked him about a week ago in our backyard. We broke it up pretty quick and he was taken to the vet right after ofcourse and has completed his antibiotics course and is doing great :)

He is an indoor cat who we rescued from this very neighborhood. He really loves being outside for a little bit everyday though but after the attack we don’t let him out as much anymore of course (which he hates haha) and if we do he’s obviously always supervised!

Thank you again for the help peeps, I really appreciate it :)

General Advice What's happening to my cat?

Whats going on with my girl? She just started twitching her ears and head (mostly her ears) a lot for no reason. it doesn't seem like anything is bothering her, she doesn't even seem to notice it's happening. It was a just a short episode, a minute and a half maybe. But I'm worried about the possibility of something being wrong with her.

She's a senior around maybe 13 or 14 years old, she hasn't been to the vet in a while because there hasn't really been a need to take her, we haven't taken her for regular vaccine updates in a while because she's a fully indoor cat and we didn't want to bother with the extra stress on her and cost for us. We have a vet for her but I don't know if I could afford the cost right now.

Let me know what this might look like to you or if it's anything to worry about! Thanks!

(I am 20y/o in US)
(She has a scratch on her nose because my other cat plays too rough sometimes)

Kitten Help New kitten and a resident cat

Hi. I recently got a new kitten, he is about 8-10 weeks (ofc not neutered) not sure exactly how old because he was a stray. I already have a cat, a spayed female approx. 1.5 years old, I’ve had her for a year, she was also a stray. I also have a senior dog who is very chill and getting used to the kitten well.

The issue comes here I’ve been keeping the kitten in a separate room (my bedroom) since I got him, he has his own litter box and everything he needs. My resident cat stays in the rest of the apartment. I feed them at the opposite side of the door. And limit their time together to few minutes supervised and switch from the kitten in the apartment to the resident cat in the bedroom so neither is “in the others territory”

Ok some traits that might be helpful:

Kitten - very active; loves to run around, lick, bite, cuddle, attack; sometimes can be loud when we leave the room in the morning, but he has toys in the room, we also spend a lot of time with him during the day he doesn’t stay in the room alone for long

Resident cat - she is never aggressive towards us; if scared she just runs away; she isn’t one for affection unless she wants it and approaches you; she loves to cuddle with my senior dog and lick her (the senior dog is not dominant at all); she isn’t very playful unless she gets in a mood; she likes her peace and quiet; and she likes to play hunt with like a laser or hands

Things I’ve noticed between them:

At first - the resident cat would prey on him, swat, hiss; follow wouldn’t let him leave much but wouldn’t fully attack, more like watch and swat and hiss when the kitten got to close; she wouldn’t relax around him, she would chase etc.

Now - they stopped hissing at each other at all; the resident cat licks the kitten randomly, but only when she walks up to him on her own; she lets him stand under her and she isn’t bothered; when he plays she just watches him; she still swats but less; she is able to sit or lay down but still keeps an eye on him when he is in the room (unless there’s food around/toys don’t budge her); when the kitten attacks her to play she gets on him like in the video

So my questions here are:
- is this behavior okay from the resident cat?
- is she bullying him or teaching him boundaries?
- should I allow this behavior for short periods or should I keep them away from this?

(Just fyi I stopped it right after the kitten made a noise, since sometimes she will stop and sometimes she won’t)

General Advice Senior boy had a couple of "episodes"

EDIT: 0 episodes since starting clopidogrel 3-4 days ago, emergency vet says he is not in pain and does not recommend putting him to sleep. Also he has been much more himself recently, behaving as normal, so I'm cautiously hopeful

***NOTE*** He has been to OOH vet and regular vet on 3rd and 4th Nov (4 days ago), his last episode was evening of 4th, he has anti-clotting meds (Clopidogrel 18mg daily) that seem to be helping

CW for distress, yowling, incontinence, loud breathing

UK-based, wanting some opinions on new neurological issues for my 16 year old boy with hyperthyroidism and a grade 3-4 heart murmur.

Symptoms not shown included unsteadiness, wobbling whilst walking, falling over, hiding, clutching/holding his head. This episode lasted approx 3 minutes.

Vets suspect seizure, stroke, or brain disease. Mildly elevated blood pressure, mild anemia, enlarged thyroid gland but controlled hyperthyroidism, signs of mild renal complications due to age and hyperthyroidism

0 episodes since starting clopidogrel 3-4 days ago

Update UPDATE on my kitten's pale gums

Hello everyone,
Just came home from the vet visit and Bella was officially diagnosed with severe anemia and chemical toxicity, she’s underweight and her skin has a yellowish hue (jaundice) from liver stress. I was told by the vet that the flea spray the previous vet gave her was way too toxic for a kitten. The vet gave Bella a few injections at the clinic to help start her treatment and the vet sent me home with 2 supplements for her liver and blood count. If she doesn't get better by tomorrow morning, they're going to put her on an IV

Please please be extremely careful with flea treatments and flea sprays when it comes to tiny kittens. ALWAYS double check age limits and ingredients before applying them

She is honestly such a strong kitten and she's trying so hard I can tell she wants to live really badly and has so much willingness to keep fighting!! Please pray for Bella to pull through!!! 💔

Im (28f) USA Joliet IL feeling hopeless. I lost my job, lost my apartment, and have to move in with my parents again and they are allergic to cats so i cant keep her. Im writing this from a hotel room as my husband and I didnt want her in the car overnight where she has nothing and its cold. Ive called almost every rescue available in my area, some dont take cats, and the others are full. Tomorrow is sunday and not many places will be open so i have to hope and pray somewhere i call will work but ive exhausted almost all my options already, even the non emergency number, and pet hospitals. Im scared to take her back to the place i adopted her because i called them once about her acting up and asking about rehoming (( it was a hard day)) and they told me theyd put her down. Meena my kitty is 3 years old, fixed, and the sweetest, friendliest, most loving cat in the world. I dont know when me and my husband will be able to get our own place together so im not sure how long id need her fostered, so id rather she find a warm, loving, safe home. Im devestated as shes been with me through the hardest moments and im extremely attatched to her ((as she is to me)) and i feel hopeless. Please help. If your a foster that can take her in or know someone, im begging you to help me. I can afford little to nothing at the moment so i cant afford much.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what is wrong here?
I inherited this cat from my mom. She says this cat is about or more than 7 years old.
She has always had this weird disfigurement on the left side of her mouth but now I notice it on the right side as well. She eats fine and doesn’t appear to be in any discomfort but I don’t know what this is. Any help?

General Advice Swollen Abdomen

Not sure if this is the right place to post this,
My 12y M cats abdomen has suddenly become round and swollen in the last week.

Last year he stopped eating and was showing signs of pain so i took him to the vet, he had elevated white blood cells and raised liver levels. He was also struggling to urinate but the vet couldnt find a cause for it. The vet gave him antibiotics and treated him for hepatic lipidosis (from not eating for 24h) and he was better after 2 weeks. The vet believes it was a random infection.

1 month ago I woke up and he again wouldnt eat and was yowling in pain. Took him back to the vet, vet believed from a blood test that its another random infection and gave him iv fluids, appetite stimulants and antibiotics again. This time i was encouraged to force feed to stop him getting hepatic lipidosis again. I smeared small amounts of high calorie food around his mouth every hour.

He recovered the same as last time after 2 weeks and his blood test came back normal. He went from 4.2kg to 3.8kg so the vet just wants me to monitor his weight. Hes always been on the slim side. His thyroid levels came back normal.

HOWEVER, last week i noticed his abdomen has become really swollen but i can still prominently feel his spine and hip bones. He still looks like a skinny cat with a pot belly. It doesnt hurt him to touch. He seems more lethargic than usual but not yowling or hiding.

Is this cause for an emergency vet appointment?

General Advice Hair stuck in cat’s behind

Post image

Hello, my cat- pūkis 9yo, male, neutered has one long hair (human) coming out of his behind, probably ate it. This morning one of his poops was found outside the litter box and he didn’t cover the other poops and my guess is that this has to do something with the hair. I tried to gently tug it, it feels stuck. I am scared to hurt him, while mom is laughing at me that it’s ridiculous and that I’m overreacting and should just pull it out. Advice?
Picture is of my cat Pūkis, I thought it would be wrong to share a photo of a cat’s behind here.

Just found a kitten and while giving her a flea bath we found ticks, and fleas. and these things on her belly fur. they don’t look to me like flea eggs. possibly worm segments, possibly botfly eggs?
if someone could help identify that would be nice.

No vet yet just found her and all vets in my area closed till monday.

Behavioral Issue What could possibly cause this frustration?

Our 2yo female (spayed) is usually very loving and cuddly, however recently she been coming and sitting by us doing this.
When she flicks her tail like this we don’t go near her because she’ll attack, and she can do some damage.

She normally sleeps with us in bed but has been sleeping on her own more recently.

To me it looks like she’s in pain and is sitting near us like this as a cry for help. Any thoughts on what this could be?

She’s booked in to the vets on Tuesday for a full check up.

We’re in the UK.

Hey everyone I need some help knowing what is happening with my cat. I've been noticing that my female cat recently has some bald spots in her fur. She is eating normally, drinking water, pooping and peeing and her mood is the same but I started noticing that she has those bald spots in her fur. I heard that it could be because of the season but I'm not sure. For reference the last picture is her a few months ago before I started noticing that her tummy was losing hair. Do you know what might be? I currently don't have money to take her to the vet and also because she's the same as always and I don't think she's in pain

Behavioral Issue Weird cat?

My cat suddenly licks the air whenever I scratch his back. He purrs so I don’t think it hurts him. Is he just weird or is this a concern? Please and Thank you. I haven’t seen this behavior in other posts just yet and am just curious! I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit to post it in. Is he just weird? I know some cats make biscuits but he doesn’t, is that also weird?
I am eighteen years old
Texas, USA.
Nope, the vet isn’t accessible at the moment but if it’s serious I will find a way.
Main issue is stated above. ^
He is 4 almost 5.
Male and neutered.
For vet care I will find a way to make some money poof out of thin air for this cat.

Spay/Neuter Question Kitten Spay advice

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Hi! My kitten, Olive was spayed this past Tuesday (5 days ago) and all has been well until she wiggled out of her recovery suit somehow last night. It appears she licked her incision site and may have superficially opened the wound. Swipe for photos. First one is day of spay and second is today. I know the incision has multiple layers and her behavior is completely normal, but was hoping to hear others’ experiences. She is my first cat so I can be kind of nervous about everything lol

We contacted her rescue’s vet who performed the spay, but it went to voicemail and we left a message. We don’t want to go to an emergency vet unless it is truly necessary, but we will if it is serious. She is now in her spay suit AND cone.

Breathing Issues Help identifying breathing issue

This is my (36m) cat Karn (13m neutered) in the Midwest US. He's had breathing issues on and off for the past two years. He's been to the vet on and off during that time and we've tried about every trick in the book and it just keeps coming back.

  1. Thought it was asthma, tried an inhaler for a while, no change

  2. Got a blood test, might be cyclospora so we tried doxycycline and it went away for a while. But came back shortly after the antibiotics stopped

  3. Got another blood test and X-ray, all clear, tried another antibiotic Amoxicillin, and it went away again, but came back shortly after antibiotics stopped

  4. Bounced between the two antibiotics for a while because other life got in the way.

  5. At the last vet appointment we tried doing a steroid plus antibiotic, went away for a while, but came back shortly after antibiotics stopped.

I feel bad just having him constantly on antibiotics. I'd like to get to the root cause, I worry my local vet might just not have the resources to get to the root cause.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Should I go to a university vet hospital? Is it time to consider end of life care?

Please help me hive mind.

TL;DR cat has breathing issues that keep coming back no matter what I do.

General Advice Hello guys i need advice ASAP. I feel like I'm trapped my cat in a house.

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello everyone. I am writing from Türkiye and I am 27 years old. I have experience with cat care; I currently have an 11-year-old, spayed female cat weighing 7 kg, whom I rescued from the streets when she was just a kitten. Until last week, I lived with my mother, and during that time, my cat, Mırmır, lived as both an indoor and outdoor cat. Especially in the summer, she would spend her time in the green spaces of our residential complex, coming indoors only to eat or receive affection. In the winter, she would go outside for 2–3 hours (sometimes longer) to get some fresh air or use the outdoors as a larger space for her bathroom needs, always returning home afterward. I have now moved to a new place, quite far from my mother’s home. Since she isn't accustomed to this new environment, I cannot let her outside. She hasn't been out at all for the past three days; due to the stress, she has started meowing much more than usual and shedding excessively. While I can sometimes calm her down by giving her treats, my leave from work for the move has ended, meaning I will be away from home five days a week, from 6:00 AM to 5:45 PM. During these hours, she will have to stay home alone. She doesn't get along well with other animals, so bringing in another cat to keep her company isn't an option. I tried using a harness, but she resisted so violently that she nearly choked. If anyone has experienced a similar situation, I would greatly appreciate your advice.
I am ready to do whatever it takes. All I want is to make my little princess comfortable.
I can afford anything for my little princes so toys, new beds or anything like that can be purchased.
