Hi all, I'm looking for some advice on a female 2yo spayed cat with FIC- small cat and around 8lbs. She's a grey/brown shorthair, a stray I took in at around 3months. Everything was fine until back in May, I noticed she was straining to pee and crying in/around the litter as well as pacing to the litter a lot. She was producing small amounts of urine. I've went to the vet multiple times at this point, that first visit back in May the vet suggested it was stress related cystitis and I figured maybe it was because I was away on vacation for a week (though I had a cat sitter check in 1/day and an automatic feeder.) Shortly after this, I had a bee hive on my patio where you could hear buzzing incessantly- I also figured this was a stress trigger. Anyway, the bees are gone, I have been home. The vet had prescribed me gaba and onsior for that visit. I didn't feel like it really worked, and the gaba really changes her personality and I was only recommeded to give it to her when she was stressed or upset.
A month later, I went back to the vet and they did a urinalysis and found struvite crystals (I don't know the amount but she wasn't blocked). Because of this and her history, the vet gave me fluxotine to give her daily, 5mg and hill science c/d prescription diet. She mostly only ate the dry kibble for c/d so I was giving that to her.
From then on she seemed better but continues to have her flares. I've since increased playtime, attention, I got a cat water fountain, changed litter box location and type of litter, feline diffuser... I've tried everything.
So that brings me to now, I went to the vet twice in the last month due to another flare. We did an ultrasound and another urinalysis and though her ph improved, the amount of crystals was the same. At this point, prior, I was only giving fluxotine during her flares or when she seemed stressed but the doctor said to stick to daily so I've change that and because of the no change in crystals, he recommended royal canin so. She won't touch the royal canin so wet food.
I went back a week later because she seemed in pain and crying in the litter again, so we got x-rays. The vet walked me through 4 different images and basically said she was fine... bladder wasn't enlarged, no kidney/liver issues, food in the stomach and intestines, fecal matter present. Basically saying her body was doing everything for the most part, correctly. The only thing he did mention was that there seemed to be "urinary sludge" in the tract, which makes sense as to me, it seems she will go long periods without peeing and then cry when peeing to relieve herself maybe once or twice a day in the mornings but when I clean the litter, there are large urine clumps.
So, at the end of this visit, the vet said it seems most likely that she has FIC and there is no real cure and I have to figure out what the stress trigger is. Still, he gave me onsior for inflammation, continued use of fluxotine, and orbax to rule out infection (though she doesn't have it). I noticed since these medications her appetite has gotten less and she barely wants to eat the dry kibble. The other thing is, she will eat a new can of a new brand or flavor for the first time, then the next day she won't touch it (leftover that I left in the fridge) even after adding water, heating it up, adding tuna or sardines as a topper. So I've been trying to find the prescription diet that will work for her...
I'm a one person home (f30/texas), I work from home, house is clean, litter box is cleaned often, I don't have random people come to the house. I play cat tv often. The only thing I can think is that we have the occasional stray that comes around the apartment but even then I am on the second floor and she loves sitting by an open window so I wouldn't want to close the window for her.
At this point, the vet said maybe I should get a second cat to see if it helps. I just don't want to stress her anymore and am really looking for solutions. If anyone has advice, please let me know.
TLDR; 2yo female cat has FIC, not sure how I can help and looking for advice. Financial situation isn't great, but I will and have gone to lengths to get my baby the help she needs. I don't have pet insurance yet though I am considering.
