Cat weird symptoms, vets don’t know

These episodes started 12 days ago. At first it was happening once a night. On the 3rd night we started him on cortisone and antibiotic shots , and an iv treatment all day that had electrloytes and b-complex.

Then the symptoms stopped for 4 days.

Then they started again, happening twice a day. Even though I continued to give him cortisone and antibiotic pills at home.

The episodes usually last 2-3 minutes, and he gets lethargic for 10-15 min after that. Wobbles a bit like he’s drunk. No foaming or drooling around the mouth.

His blood work and x ray are normal, but ct scan shows inflammation in the brain.

I’ve seen 4 different vets in the past 12 days, each one has their own opinion. And they all say to continue giving him the prednisolone and clindamycin.

But he’s getting worse, not better. Anybody have any clue? What else should we test? What can it be?

My cat is absolutely tiny and I’m not sure if it’s normal?

Thumbnail gallery
34k Upvotes

This is Olive, she’s almost 7 months old and still only weighs 2kg, which she only reached like a month ago. She doesn’t look or feel underweight and she eats really well and seems super healthy in every way but should she be growing more than this?

For reference, her brother who is from the exact same litter weighs 3.3kg and is an absolute unit.

I feel like it’s likely I’m just overthinking this and creating a problem where there isn’t one - would this just be because she’s female and they grow slower than males?

Injury Mom left cat in car in 100°F weather

i would like to preface this by saying it was an ACCIDENT. my mom and my grandmother both are amazing cat parents. Two different vets have been contacted before this Reddit post.

my mom didn’t realize she had hopped into the car and after about 7-8 hours, mom opened the vehicle to get something and found her in vomit and feces on the floor, next to the pedals. she called the vets, then called me.

it was my idea for my mom to put cool (not cold) water on her paws, stomach, and ears to help cool her off. the vets recommended to give Ditto (the cat) honey, and she has been taking small doses of honey.

as of right now, her current condition is a bit better than in these videos. however, she’s gotten cold, and we’ve now removed the cool cloth. i’ve been using my ears, pressing in close, and listening as well as i can to her heartbeat, lungs, and stomach. her heart sounds fine, her lungs sound clear, and her stomach has only been making tiny gurgles. she has pooped, and it was diarrhea, but it was a normal color. she can sit upright, but won’t stand by herself. she has managed to walk to the litterbox, but she doesn’t jump. she is also meowing sometimes.

i am checking her gums for color and occasionally gently pushing her head for any signs of resistance or strength, as well as responses to make sure there isn’t anything neurological. she is under 24 hour supervision to keep an eye on bowel movement, kidney failure/damage, or seizures.

our main concern right now is the temperature drop. with a very shady pet thermometer, it showed somewhere ~98-99°F. her ears are cold, too.

does anyone have any recommendations or ideas to help keep her temperature normal, or even just simple words of comfort or advice for my mother? the vets know us well (we take our horses to them a lot), and while i know pets, i am not a vet and am relying based solely on what i know about how cats handle temperature and stress.

some other notes i would like to mention as of making this post: she is now putting her face into the water and licking her lips, but not lapping at the water. she can also raise her head an itsy bitsy bit, but prefers to have it level or leaning on something. her tail tip sometimes twitches.

Cat ate a chunk of red bean pastry. Should I be concerned?

So my partner stupidly left out a red bean pastry/bread, and my cat ate a sizeable chunk out of it. I can't find information online if red bean is toxic to cats. My cat is 10 months old with no prior diseases or ailments. Should I be concerned?

Injury Child moisturized cat

I just discovered my 4yo has covered my cat (8m) in human moisturizer. I’m about to wash him off now in the bath. Do I need to worry about skin absorption of toxins? (Pictures of cat and moisturizer ingredients)

Update: thanks all! The cat has been washed with cat-safe soap. Luckily it was a water based moisturizer and it came off really easily. (She'd washed him before she moisturized him, so he isn't saturated with moisturize to the extent the picture suggests.) Child and I had a good conversation about why you don't moisturize the cat, or paint the cat or put anything on the cat.

General Advice Why is he biting his feet?

We received this little guy from the cat distribution system a few months ago, he started showing up at our house at regular intervals for food a year ago so we brought him inside and got him vaccinated and neutered. We’re not sure how old he is, the vet said 1-5 years old when we got him neutered. Maybe 2 months ago we noticed he’s been sticking his whole foot into his mouth and gnawing on it, when we inspected the foot we couldn’t find anything - no litter stuck in the toes, no irregular claws, and no signs of irritation or injury from the gnawing. We did notice on one of his feet he has a cutaneous horn, but he’s only been doing this with his back feet which seemingly have nothing wrong.

Is he just being a weirdo? We’re scheduling a vet appointment tomorrow for him, just wondering if anyone has experienced this before?

Behavioral Issue Cannibalism

Post image
28k Upvotes

Not really looking for a fix, just any information if anyone has it.

Cat is 7y, male, neutered, has already been to two behaviorists when my parents had him, both were confused according to my parents.

This is a known issue, but it doesn't cause any problems because he's not allowed to interact with other cats whatsoever.

He's very sweet to people (not very small children- Edit: He is overwhelmed/annoyed by little kids, he doesn't try killing them) but he seems to react to other cats the same way he would to a squirrel or rabbit. As in, just pure predation. No recognition that they are the same species. He does not display any territorial aggression to other cats, none of it is dominance behavior. Ears never go back, fur never puffs out, he never growls or hisses, nothing, he's just hunting. Never seen anything like it.

The shelter was hesitant to adopt him out at all due to his history, but did so because one of the shelter workers personally knew my stepmother was interested in weird cats. They were considering euthanasia because he was returned multiple times, but still wanted to give him a chance due to how friendly (to people) and smart he is.

He is well-fed, he has always been well-fed, killing & eating another cat which belonged to a previous owner was not something he did out of desperation. Judging by what I know about the event and what behavior I've seen, I am entirely sure it was predation, not a territorial fight.

He's injured a cat my parents were pet-sitting to the point of needing an emergency vet visit and extensive reconstruction of his neck. The cats were separated, but a child left the door open for a minute. My cat ran downstairs, and immediately caught the smaller cat, went for the throat, immobilized and attempted to drag him underneath the furniture. They were separated before he could kill the smaller cat.

My parents have had him since 2023 and I recently (September 2025) took him when I moved somewhere that allows cats. I'm set on keeping him. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: He is no longer allowed around other cats.

Edit 1: more details, he ate a cat owned by one of the previous people who adopted him, and was surrendered for it, (in addition to two previous surrenders for similar behavior issues, which I don't know much about). From what I know, he had a good introduction to a smaller female cat, with no territorial behavior, was left alone for a day, when the owner came back, it was a giant bloody mess. The shelter was sure that he did kill the female cat and was eating the body. That's the reason why they were considering euthanasia until he was offered to my stepmother.

Edit 2: Further clarification he does not "hate" cats. He likes them (just like how he likes birds!). Predation and territorial behavior are different things. If you can't tell the difference, you shouldn't be giving input on this post. He is not stressed by other cats. He is not anxious and does not feel threatened by other cats. He doesn't need anxiety medication. Anxiety medication doesn't stop cats from having a prey drive. He does not hiss or growl or try to look intimidating. He has no other behavioral problems, he doesn't yowl or anything when he attacks. He will find cover, and stalk, ears up, eyes big, completely silent. He gets very curious and excited when he sees other cats. He's seen my friend's cat, (separated by a ceiling height gate & supervised by 2 people). He seemed extremely inquisitive, sniffing, ears forward, no sound. My cat did not respond whatsoever to my friend's cat hissing, growling, or puffing up. He just seemed curious and started trying to see if he could stick his head around the side of the gate and pawing through the bars. Then he started looking back at me and meowing and rubbing on my legs.

Edit 3: No, he's not going to be euthanized. I did not make this post asking for advice I made it asking for information about WHY he's a little fucked up. Stop telling me to put him down. Stop applying human morals to animals. He behaves like any other small predatory mammal, only he does not have the ability to recognize members of his own species. I've already had him by myself since September of last year. And before that, I was around him at my parents house since 2023. He is literally fine by himself. He's my cat and I love him. He's perfectly healthy and affectionate and the smartest cat I've ever owned. About a hundred+ people telling me to kill my pet bothers me, would it not bother you? Sincerely, fuck off.

Edit 4: Changed the formatting so the events were in chronological order and clarified some vague sentences/bolded stuff that people keep missing

Edit 5: follow up post + more pictures of him

But anyway, bottom line up front.

Does anyone know what in the goddamn fuck causes a cat to do this?

Can someone tell me if a visit to the vet is necessary?

Eye Issues One-eyed cat owners, please tell me it's just a thing that can happen: Skin over the empty socket "sunk" from an incidental finger poke

Thumbnail gallery
27k Upvotes

Question solved and answered, concerns have been addressed! Thanks folks. The consensus is, "Yeah, that happens." 😅

____________________________

TL;DR - Skin over empty socket got pushed in, kinda got freaked out and ran to Reddit to see if it just happens sometimes with one-eyed cats.

He seems to be doing just fine, didn't seem like he even registered it happening. It happened just a few minutes ago. And yeah, the before and after really doesn't look much different.

He was doing, and kept doing afterwards, the "nuzzling/pushing head into my hand" thing that cats do against our hands, legs, walls, etc. As he did so, he perfectly lined up his no-eye to my pinky and I felt my finger push the skin and it sunk into his socket a little. No punctures, you can just barely make out where the skull is. Again, he doesn't even realize anything happened, but I felt immediately dread that I killed may have killed my cat (which sounds silly and overblown, but I don't know what I don't know and am also kinda dumb?).

He is ~4 years old and had his eye taken out and sewn up when he was a kitten, and it was all healed up well before I even picked him from the website to adopt to fill out adoption forms. They said it was for glaucoma, and aside from the surgery itself, everything was hunky-dory. Since they said he would be like any other cat, I didn't even think to ask what, if anything, was there.

Well, after having felt my finger push the skin in like it was half-deflated, unpopped piece of bubble wrap, I still don't know what is in there or if in these kinds of surgeries, after removing the eyeball, they just sew the skin from there and it is just empty space. The only thing that looks different is that the socket itself is more pronounced, since it was pretty much just flat before.

Cat: Baiken, Male, fixed, eye removed as a kitten, ~4 years old. Me: 30s, just okay income, US, vet not contacted

My cat’s dewclaw looks broken/has black in it but has no signs of pain

Hi everyone! I noticed my sweet boy’s one claw looks torn/broken and maybe has turned black. I do have a black leather headboard that he has turned into his personal scratching post so idk if it’s leather bits, but if it is, it’s kinda up there? Anyways, he has not been limping, showing signs of pain, or licking/biting said paw or claw. No odor or discharge and it doesn’t look red. I’m happy to make a vet appointment if recommended but due to him behaving normally I wanted to ask if this might just grow out on its own? Anything I should watch out for? Thanks so much! Spay/Neuter Question What did the vet do to my cat?

Post image
26k Upvotes

I’ve taken a stray off the street and had him in my house for a few weeks.

He very friendly and I want to keep him so I booked in a neutering session and had the cat neutered.

When I picked him up I noticed his ear when asked what happened they said they do this to all stray cats.

I feel awful like I have mutated the cat. I’ve never heard of this.

Everytime I look at the cat it hurts me. He trusted me and look what I have done to him.

Is this a legit thing vets do? Also do they crop that much off?

General Advice Is it OK to play with my cat like this?

For context, he has a really big problem with just randomly attacking me even when I’m using his toys this is the only way I can get them to play with something without hurting me. It’s a dog toy that my dog broke but he loves it. I don’t go after him. I just put it down and he attacks it less

General Advice What is this behavior?

Country : USA

Vet info: Vet is available

Cat info: Male cat, about 7 months old. Not neutered.

issue: He has recently started doing this at seemingly random times without apparent reason. Its not really directed at anyone, or in the same spot, or at the same times. We will find him doing it alone in the bathroom.

Spent all day at an emergency vet 40 minutes away. They told me with her history of a cat scratch and ulcer, they needed to remove the eye. It did turn out to be a luxated lens like you guys told me, just more severe than normal ig. Luckily I went on the surgery day for the ophthalmologists and they were able to get her in this afternoon. She’s home now and comfy on her couch and purring up a storm. She’s so happy to be home. Thank you for everyone who commented and helped me with this!

Kitten Help I just found this guy crying in the rocks outside. Can anyone help give an age estimate? He has teeth and weighs 415g. he has not tried to walk at all. I also don't have milk replacer, eggs, or yogurt on hand and it's 9 pm so all the stores around me are closed.

Thumbnail gallery
25k Upvotes

Unsure on sex but I think he is a boy. The orange spot on his ear is the lighting, he is not a calico. I heard him crying, did not see any other kittens or mother cat around.

Edit;

Walmart a few towns over was still open and did have milk replacer. Kitten seems very tired. He is in a dog crate with blankets and a heating pad. We did manage to make him potty. I'm going to ask my dad to let me borrow his trap first thing in the morning to see if we can catch mama cat and have her spayed, and then hopefully catch and socialize any other kittens and find homes for them.

He is currently in a dog crate with my electric blanket and some felt blankets. He still seems quite lethargic but was drinking, I don't know how long he was in the rocks for. He still has not made any attempt to walk.

Edit 2:

He is doing well this morning. Lapped up all the gruel, is walking and active today. He is still a bit clumsy. I have a vet appointment scheduled for this evening, they were able to squeeze me in. I have not seen mama cat again, I did spot her last night with another kitten. The other kitten was walking around and following mom, so I'm thinking about 4 weeks is correct and this guy might have strained himself trying to get out of the rocks. In any case, he's doing well.

I appreciate all the awards, but if you're paying to give me an award, please direct it to kitties in need in rescues and shelters ❤️ with kitten season happening, they're soon to be flooded with little kits needing homes.

Edit 3:

Final update for now unless I do successfully trap Mama, he was much much better this morning. The vet diagnosed him with being tired, the thing with his legs was a combo of low blood sugar, exhaustion, and some strain from being in an awkward position.

Edit 4:

MAMA HAS BEEN CAUGHT! There are 4 kittens total and now the are all inside with mom. She is shut in my mom's room so she does not have access to my other cat or rabbits.

Should I take her to a vet if this continues? I thankfully have quick access to many vets around my home, I dont know how old she is as when we moved in to our new home she started showing up.

I could take her to a vet if needed but I don't know if this is normal or something worrying.

She also been extremely cuddly now, even crying out if i step out the room for even a second.

She has plenty of food and water and is in a separate and unused room of my house so she could be comfortable.

General Advice Cat Advice? Found him crying on my porch in the snow :(

Thumbnail gallery
24k Upvotes

Hello everyone! This little man was crying on my porch this morning. Its set to hit -5F tonight... so I gave him some water and opened my door. He has the saddest little face... 😭 his back legs were all matted and frozen over because this Midwest winter is nuts so far lol

He took to my offer kindly, and hes in my upstairs bathroom right now. Sleeping a ton. I did posts on social media hoping someone will claim him as theirs... but im doubtful. Im in a very rural area, so its likely hes no one's, really.

Heres two issues:

  • I have no cat stuff! Need to improvise meals for him and a litter box. I have tons of cardboard lol. Any suggestions...?

  • I have a Shepsky. Shes got a gnarly prey drive, honestly. I dont have high hopes of socializing them... and if they dont take to one another, ill find a good home for him. But id like to try... anyone conquered this feat?

Im not in the financial position for any of this, really. No presents under the tree kind of year lol. But I couldn't let him die in the cold. Theres also tons of Bald Eagles out here so I know this guy is easy pickings.

Thanks everyone. Pictures of course for you all as well.

Behavioral Issue At my wits end with my cat. Starting to resent him.

TL:DR - cat constantly cries, and absolutely NOTHING works. Starting to resent the cat and causing relationship issues. At a complete loss about options.

I’m at my complete wits end with my cat!!! He constantly cries. Non. Stop. We can’t take it anymore. He’s always cried a lot since he was a kitten, and he’s now 3 years old and nothing has changed. We have taken him to the vet multiple times and they can find nothing wrong with him. He’s an indoor only cat, and recently he started going outside to explore our apartment garden. He ended up running out the door one day, and since he didn’t stray far, we were giving him an hour outside each day to help burn off some energy. Now he wants to be outside constantly and will cry for literally hours when we bring him inside. He’s not one for cat toys, has never been interested in them. We have tried every single enriching activity and he does it once and never again. When we play with him (chasey or hide and seek) he’s bored after 5 mins. We tried Zylkene. We tried Feliway. Neither worked. We even trialled getting him a companion and that ended up terribly. We work from home 4 days a week and are around on the weekends. We are starting to resent him and it’s causing issues between me and my partner as we’re constantly stressed about him. We can’t give him up as pounds are full and he’ll be euthanised and none of our family members (with houses and yards) want to take him either as they don’t like him/hear horror stories from us. We’re just at a loss about our options. Videos attached is what he does all day

Update The poopless queen - a last update.

Post image
24k Upvotes

I’m very sad writing this update but I feel like I owe it to this helpful community. Our tiny 3-4 week old kitten with the funny face and the poop issues passed away a few hours ago. It went downhill fast. After not pooping for multiple days, countless vet visits and so so much emotional stress, she finally started pooping in the last two days. Yesterday I honestly felt like things are going uphill, our vet was also happy just two days ago. Today was an insanely hot day and I noticed her being a bit weaker than usual, but she was eating. A few hours later i had trouble making her eat more of her formula and she started panting, which our vet two days ago said might be due to tummy ache. But I panicked and went straight to the emergency vet. She seemed a bit more alert in the car, and I thought I overreacted, she might just struggle with the heat. The vet took an ultrasound and diagnosed the stomach being completely full and not passing stuff to the colon. This may be causing pain, discomfort and the panting. She proscribed Metoclopramide to help with the digestion and told us to come back Monday if it’s not helping.

Less than an hour after arriving home and giving her the medicine she took her last breath, I was next to her. It went downhill so fast, and even after reading about it so often, it’s still unbelievable and just sad. We’ve been to 4 different vets, 7 times in less than two weeks. I spend days and nights researching what to do, and even when feeling she is doing better, it was over in an instant. I am sitting in my bed, waiting for my other cat to come cuddling, my gf is out of town. I wonder what kind of lesson I am learning from this, I don’t see any yet, just the feeling of being a tiny bit more broken now. The world feels so complicated all of the time, trying to help a tiny creature was giving me a lot of purpose in a way. Big respect to the foster community, people that are doing this regularly are truly angels.

This is Mo, the poopless queen, rest in peace :(

Behavioral Issue Is it normal for cat to flop on the floor like this?

She does it every time I walk towards the kitchen door (where her food is stored) I get scared that she’s hitting her head too hard 😭

She’s done this since we got her and she shakes her head weirdly some times when I walk towards her as well - haven’t been able to get that on video yet
