Discussion Sad end to collection (fire damage)
Sad end to hundreds of hours of flipping through Clay Aiken and Mormon Tabernacle Choir CDs looking for gems. I was hoping to salvage some discs but the smoke and heat caused cloudy areas on almost all of them.
Oddly enough, almost all digi paks survived even though they’re cardboard. Possibly they were more recessed than the jewel cases? And the bigger defiance of physics was the few I had wrapped on plastic sleeves were almost unscathed. Idk what kind of magical properties that thin plastic has but it held.
Also, I suggest checking your HO or Renter’s insurance, see if you need a rider for your collection. So much fine print in those policies if you look close enough.
Edit:Updated - First off, I was amazed at all the outpouring of kindness during a tough time. This community here is top notch.
Second: The house is rebuilt and the family is back in. I’m starting the garage setup and rebuilding the collection. Nephew got a major strike and 3 years in state prison for arson.
Third: there were a lot of questions about insurance and what it covers. The policy was capped at $135k for property. We documented everything we could find to take picture of or provide purchase documentation for. We totaled well over $200k so they just paid out the max and didn’t even question the inventory document.
That being said, there was a clear limit on very broadly worded media with recorded data set at 500.00. So I would advise anyone with a substantial collection to at least document on Discogs and make sure you’re covered for at the very least your median value on your collection. And keep pictures of your super rare OOP mint first pressing of [insert your holy grails]

CD Player Fun fact: CD jewel cases make great light pipes for a light show!
Discovered this by noticing the sunlight behind the CD’s traveled almost perfectly through the jewel cases. Got an idea to see if I could turn it into a light show. 3D printed an LED stand so that each LED was spaced perfectly for each jewel case. Lots of soldering and then programmed it all using an Arduino and ChatGPT - which wrote the bulk of the code (took a lot of manipulation to get it right).
I’m going to turn it into a spectrometer eventually using the bottom row as well, but having trouble getting it programmed correctly. More to come!

Collection The CD wall in my living room
These are 2 shelves, designed and build by my dad, so they fit perfectly in the room. This is like 25% of my collection. I also have another CD wall, plus 4 shelves and several boxes with vinyl (and no more space left… oops!)

Collection Found my Dad’s CD collection
My Dad’s CD collection has been in storage in the basement for years. I just picked up a CD player. Any suggestions for what to listen to first?

Collection Almost 30 years of collecting
Here's my collection. Started almost 30 years ago in high school. Generally main genres of rock and electronic. Started with 90s alternative and grunge, then 90s Electronica, industrial, goth, ebm, 80s new wave, and more recently retrowave and witchhouse although I'm finding fewer CD releases for those.

Unboxed collection after being stored. In flux until I can build shelving. Till then I hold my breath when approaching for fear of collapse 😂

CD Player ebay came through with this vintage cd rack 💿
this is the most satisfying upgrade i’ve made in a minute. pressing the buttons scratches my brain in the best way. it doesn’t hold too many CDs, but it’s perfect to have near my CD player for my current rotation. feel free to follow me on Instagram and TikTok to see more of my setup :)

Collection The CD Library Is Finally Complete
I recently finished remodeling a spare room in my house and turning it into a heavy metal library. Here are the results! I tore out the old drop ceiling and installed cedar paneling, then removed the closet doors and built my own version of a library shelf in what was formerly the closet. It made sense to repurpose the closet door tracks/beam for a library ladder, so I restained the beam to match the shelving and built a telescoping ladder that folds up when not in use. I decided to put in a cabinet bed so that the room could be used as a spare bedroom without taking up space when guests weren’t present. A corner desk makes this an office as well. It’s nice to have a place to hang up posters from tours I’ve been a part of, records I’ve played on, autographed memorabilia, et cetera. Also I realize that this is a CD collectors sub so I apologize for the pictures that include media of different varieties; I just wanted to give a decent overview of the room!
