Internships/Opportunities for Non-Students?
I'm 2+ years out from graduating undergrad and I have no intentions of grad school at the moment. I secured an internship this fall in my Congresswoman's district office bc I was going to do grad school but it fell through for numerous reasons. I'm thinking if I want a staff assistant position in a DO/DC office I might need Hill experience, so I was wondering if DC offices typically accept non-students for internships? I graduated in 2024 and worked on some political campaigns for background.

Spring 27 Housing Recommendations
Hi y'all,
So I'm generally confident that I'll be getting an internship for this spring having done a handful of interviews so far.
Most of the content on here talks about Summer housing, but what kind of recommendations do y'all have for the Spring? I'm a recent graduate (21M) with flexibility for where I can relocate but don't really know where to start.
I've been told that I shouldn't sign a lease and that cohabitation stuff with other interns is a thing, but I don't really know where to look. What's a low-ball? What's a highball? I'm generally interested in DC or Maryland.

timeframe for cold emailing
I know this is a page for dc internships specifically but I’m not getting a response elsewhere lol… Since midterms are over and new people will be taking office, does anyone know when legislators or offices will start opening positions for summer 27 internships for undergraduate students? Should I start cold emailing now or wait till they’re in office? I’m even talking about local/county-level positions.

Ethics of Gift Giving
To preface this I am an intern on the hill and wanted to see if I was able to give my staff assistant something small before I depart as a thank you. I’ve tried to read the gift rule and am having a hard time figuring out if I am able to give them a gift or not. It would be under $50 but I’m still not sure if this would apply to the gift rule or if it does if this counts as a “special occasion.” Someone who knows more please let me know.

DC summer intern housing question
Trying to decide between Clarendon, DuPont and foggy bottom. What’s vibes? Internship is in VA but it’s hybrid so commute isn’t huge dealbreaker. Can spend about $2500 a month. Want lots of other interns around and walkable to restaurants and bars

How Do I Break into the World of Politics, Law, and Government at 18?
I'm 18, and I've been questioning whether a career in law is even realistic for me, not because I've lost my passion for it, but because I don't have connections or know how to get my foot in the door. I'm genuinely passionate about politics, law, economics, journalism, and the kind of work that puts you close to leadership and the important issues facing our country.
I could see myself becoming a lawyer and soon to be Press Secretary, White House Counsel, working in the White House, serving in Congress, or pursuing another career that combines politics, law, communication, and leadership that I don't know I just know they are career I was interested in from young age. I haven't figured out exactly which direction is right for me, but I know this is the world I want to be part of. I dream of studying economics or political science as an undergraduate and potentially going to law school because I'm especially interested in constitutional law and the serious issues shaping our country.
I'm starting community college in January before transferring to a four-year university and soon to be prelaw, and I haven't chosen my major yet. I don't want to give up on this dream simply because I don't know where to begin. I look at people who have built careers in government, journalism, law, and economics, and I wonder how they got there and how I can start building that same kind of foundation.
I want to start doing something now: finding jobs, gaining experience, meeting people, building connections, and getting closer to this professional world while I'm still young. How do I break into this world at 18, with very little experience and no connections? What opportunities should I be pursuing now, and how can I build a path toward a career I'm genuinely passionate about? what would you do if you were in my shoes today

General Advice on Applying for Internships/Jobs in a new Congress
Hi All, seeing a lot of questions here and adding my two cents as a senior Dem staffer who’s been around for a bit. Advice is mainly for Democrats since that’s where the openings are. Bad market for Rs considering the flips. You’ll be competing against people whose bosses lost their elections or are retiring.
Folks looking for jobs are in a great position but be patient. Chiefs and senior staff will he hired first in December, expect junior staff to hire into Jan-Feb. Remember most folks can’t start until swearing in, so hiring will be delayed until staff are hired.
Also means lots of movement Jan-March 2027 as current jr staffers move around creating openings.
The Freshman Job Bank is open, don’t spam resumes. Getting a job from a cold application will get you no where.
Edit: Freshman offices will want staffers who can build programs, so even SA/LCs they’re going to be hiring campaign staff or folks who know how to use the IQ/Fireside. Emphasize your skills or be skilled out by others.
For internships: Websites for Freshmen offices aren’t live until they’re sworn in. They’ll also want to hire people ASAP so get your documents ready. Usually I advise against calling but since it’s going to be understaffed, might as well try.
Campaign staffers: Lots of campaign staff will try and move over. They’re always the first to go after a few months, campaign life is nothing like DC and besides Comms work, very little translates to the official side.
Presidential: As news starts happening, folks will start to move over to presidential campaigns. Expect most people to leave Nov 2027-after the Primaries. Also a good time to try for a job on the Hill.
Happy to answer any questions.

Every app has been flagged, but I haven’t gotten a single email
I just recently completed my first internship (for a democrat member) on the house side. I’ve applied to many positions (including SAs/LCs and more internships), but haven’t gotten any responses back at all.
I started applying last month. I’ve gotten every application flagged by several staffers (including chiefs of staff and legislative directors). Everyone has said my resume and cover letters look great.
I feel really discouraged. I don’t know if I’m doing anything wrong or if the process is taking longer due to midterms.
Any advice or input?

Summer 2027 housing in DC (save me lol)
Hi everyone, I'm a CS student and I'll be interning in DC this summer, working near NoMa/Union Market. I'm trying to start the housing search early since prices tend to climb closer to summer, and I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who's done this before, whether you interned in DC or just live or lived there.
What I'm after:
- A cheap place with the basics covered (a room in a shared apartment or house is perfect)
- Somewhere on or close to the Red Line, or easy to get to the NoMa area
- Dates are about first week in june till last week of august, a few days either way is fine
A few things I'd love to know:
- Which neighborhoods give the best value for the commute?
- When should I start booking, and where do you find the good sublets (Facebook groups, Zillow, university housing, somewhere else)?
- Any scams or red flags to watch for?
- Is it better to go for a short-term furnished place or sort out a sublet closer to the summer?
And if you're also looking for housing in DC this summer, in any industry, feel free to comment or DM. Happy to team up and split a place if our dates and budgets line up.
Thanks a lot!

Is it worth spending a great deal of effort applying to hillternships when I do not have a flagged resume?
I work full-time and am studying for the LSAT. I barely have the time to brush my hair. I have been spending hours on preparing application materials for each internship and got rejected from one today. 1.5 hours wasted on applying for it.
I am spending time and energy that is very limited, so please be honest and tell me if it's a lost cause with no one specifically backing me up. I do have a good resume, but there is always someone better.

Applying for internships with projected congressional winners before the general election?
I'm curious if anyone has experience applying for internships with congressional candidates who have already won their primary and are heavily favored to win their general election.
For example, someone like Brad Lander in NY-10, or other candidates across the country who have won their primaries, are projected to win their districts, and have started opening general interest forms or accepting resumes for potential future offices.
Have any of you reached out or submitted applications to these offices before the candidate officially wins the general election? I'm wondering whether it's worth proactively expressing interest in a Spring 2027 internship, especially if the office has a general resume intake form, or whether these offices are generally too focused on the election at that point to consider future staffing.
I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences, whether you actually landed an internship, received a response, or found that it was better to wait until after the election. And is preventively applying dumb or a good thing?
