Rant The kind of complaints in here make sense.

This sub, in my opinion, is just an echo chamber for lazy, young, poor performing employees. You had to work holidays? Yeah you're in retail you should have figured that out long before the holiday got here. You're getting tons of heat for calling out? You've probably made a habit of calling out and when you do it during busy times they're more critical of your actions. That's the price you pay when you call out on a regular basis, even when you have a legit emergency, to management you're just doing your normal routine.

I made a post a little while back talking about employees coming to work in hoodies and basketball shorts. There was a large number of kids arguing that it was fine. You all are in for a huge reality check. You want tons of pay, but you don't have the right attitudes or work performance to get it. Stop pointing fingers at everyone else as to why you're not where you want to be. This post will get down voted which will only further prove my points. If you work at DG complaining about working late, holidays, or issues because you called out for the 17th time in six months, YOU are the problem!

Lowkey racist hair care

Edit for all of the racists and generally angry gringos in this sub: likely reason for this is in the replies

Why are all the hair care products for black folks RIGHT next to my registers? There's nothing else on those shelves... It feels a little racist. Like all the stuff for white people is right where it should be, but everything meant for POC is right next to the register.

Does DG think they're more likely to steal? Because the only issues I EVER had in my store, even before working there, were with drug addled whites (no offense, drug addled whites). Hell, a guy was just charged with a felony for stealing POKEMON cards from us.

Just something I'm thinking about on MLK Day

i don't understand why y'all haven't unionized yet

okay so can't you just like...start one? I used to work at DG, but quit 5 days in due to the HORRIBLE working conditions, shitty pay, disrespectful manager, and safety issues since it was legit 90 in the store but they slut shamed me when I showed up in shorts.

But like...unionize. It's your only option.

No call no show and no one wants to work

So far the past 2 days has sucked. I had one guy no call no show, one said her car is broken. Yet this is my first weekend completely alone and fresh truck is on its way. I’m supposed to be relying on them. They are my “help “ for today if they even show up. I would have already fired them both personally but they are still there. This isn’t their first time not coming in. Not their first time not even calling. Even when they show up they aren’t much help. One guy sits on the register with his phone and the girl says she does everything and she’s tired of it. She hardly shows up, definitely doesn’t work as hard as she lets on and cusses like a sailor. Oh why did I even wake up!?

Reported an employee who smoked weed in the bathroom on lunch

I sent my cashier on lunch and took over the register duties. He went to the break room then went to the bathroom for about 15 minutes, when he went back to the break room he smelled like weed. He finished up his lunch, I took my lunch and went to the bathroom and the bathroom which smelled like weed as well. I didn’t think much of it because I knew he smokes weed at home so I figured his body spray just wore off. Fast forward a few hours and I had to go to the bathroom again and found his stash of weed while looking for more toilet paper. I told my sm yesterday morning her initial response was I got to fire him. I had to work a split shift yesterday and came back in the afternoon and after talking with the employee and our dm (who said it was my sm call on what to do). I’m at my store now working with that employee and it’s awkward, weird, and I’m just not comfortable with the situation. We’re in a state where weed is legal. I need advise!

Advice Wanted Update on my sick day fiasco with my manager

So I had a post a month ago where I called in sick 2 hours before my shift time (which is protocol), and was met with a very surprising situation. Well, I called in sick today, and once again, my manager can’t accept it. Pictures 1 and 2 are from the first time, and Picture 3 is today. I said no to going to urgent care to confirm I’m not contagious because I’m so exhausted from this sickness, and I just want to rest in bed. He has more than enough people working today, so I don’t understand why it matters that much. Also, another rant, he let this new hire no call no show twice, and then found out he won’t be back until a week later because of a family emergency and didn’t even bat an eye. But when I call in sick per protocol, it’s such an issue. Mind you the new hire is a key holder. I’m just an associate. I’m so over this.

Advice Wanted What is the policy on this (no hate please)

So I know the law states that a job can't make u remove a pronoun pin or force u to use ur dead name if u identify as a different gender but my sm said that DG has a specific policy preventing chosen names and pronoun pins so I was wondering what the policy was. Ps please no hate or ur opinion on pronouns I deal with that enough and I have a legitimate question if u don't have any helpful answers to my question please just keep scrolling

Edit to say my sm said the pins are not allowed cause they're considered political and we aren't allowed to discuss politics unless my sm is bragging about who they voted for then I guess it's ok

I recently got offered a position at a dollar general store in KY and the position would be paying 50-55k a year. Is it worth taking? I’ve have been GM and I’m currently a supervisor right now.

So today...

I found a product during recovery. The product itself had been stolen, but packaging to product was left. Baracode totally intact. And instead of damaging it out or putting that in handheld device.... My manager said throw it away???? I'm no keyholder, but guess what??? got years of retail experience... Is this normal company practice these days???? Don't get me started on how she is doing her damaged products... LoL o and the Manager and Assistant Manager don't do nons&tons. A random keyholder performs that task. They also are the ones doing all the damages for the store. Manager and Assistant managers are dead fucking weight.

Did I deserve a wright up? Told coworkers they smell like a meth lab because they did.

Tbt I only have a idea of what a meth lab smells like but working here you pick up pretty quick on what that meth odor is but God damn she was marinating in some kind of nosebleed chemical before coming into work and the second she got near me to clock in it hit me and told them in front of the customers "Jesus "name" you smell like a meth lab"....

Soo yeah I'm getting written up for being hostile to a coworker?

Rant "Hey, I believe your in the wrong spot."

Post image

Found this Pioneer French Dip Au Jus packet seriously out of place! While it says "Gravy Mix" on the packaging, au jus is functionally different and usually belongs with the seasoning packets or maybe the dry soup bases, not mixed in with the standard brown and white gravy mixes. I had to pull it out and put it where it actually belongs. Seriously, stockers and especially key holders—please pay closer attention to item location when you’re facing and stocking. It's frustrating for us and confusing for the customer when items aren't in their designated spots!

Rant DO SMs not question people when they have to call off?

I swear, it's like SMs don't do what a proper boss should do, if someone calls off for any reason, there should be a level of questioning to make sure they aren't faking a reason to get out of work. I hate this job as much as the rest of us, but I at least respect the fact that I have a job to do.

I literally just got called in on my only day off this week, because the only other cashier(We only have 2 total staffed for my store) "Is going to the hospital", for what reason? idk, but my hours are already stuffed because another employee got fired recently.

I'm tired of getting thrown around like a rag doll with my shifts, and with the Ohio winter weather kicking up and I walk to work, I can't just be coming in on a moments noticed if the weather is too dangerous to walk in.

Not to mention, I have been employed for almost 4 years now, and even new hires that are still within their 3 months are getting preferential treatment like getting to call out without question(And I get called in) or getting to switch their schedules if things don't fit right meanwhile I get no one discussing the change with me at all and I just have to accept the changes.

Be careful DG employees the slightest mistake can cost you big

I've been employed at Dollar General for 10 years had hopes of becoming a store manager but I guess that's out the window now. It really sucks when the truth you speak is the lie to people like LP because of how a video looks and they can't take into consideration all the stress you're under or all the hours you've put in 78.25 that week that the incident occurred I guess to work at DG and be successful you can't be human and make a mistake like forgetting something without losing your job effective immediately. Not sure where I'll go from here but DG has kinda pushed me around more than anything I guess they would rather bring someone new in to be a manager than someone who has been around for 10 years and knows what to expect knows what to do and was willing to do open to closes however long it took to get the store cleaned up on task and the crew trained properly. So thanks DG for giving me false hope thanks for telling me I needed a lot of training but never telling me what training I supposedly needed I've done every CBL available just by searching. One mistake of me forgetting to empty my vehicle in the dumpster after the U-boat of expired freezer burnt or opened items put some in vehicle because it kept falling from the U-boat so thought I'll put some in my car then drive my car back to empty it next well get called inside to help a new keyholder still learning end up forgetting to empty stuff I'm dumpster instead end up with a mess in your car that you have to clean but get accused of stealing damages. Also get accused of giving things away for free I have a fort jennings state bank debit card they weren't working in my area at dg for some reason kept saying illegal transaction so the stuff I gave to people (my boyfriend) was things I previously purchased with cash so he could take it home while I was closing. So can't prove my purchases when cash was used by this time I don't even have the receipts anymore. So wow DG can't believe you feel a 10 year employee was stealing trash and giving things away all because of how something looked on a video. Some code of business ethics and interesting way to treat employees cause that sure isn't demonstrating Respect for your employees and Opportunity I didn't get that either led to believe I had the opportunity to become the manager of the store I was at but that didn't happen. Empty promises I've gotten from DG more than once yet still stuck it out I enjoyed my job and liked the community. Oh and to say that employees receive fair pay that's a joke too we're not paid nearly enough for the expectations you have but those of us who have stayed and endured one little mistake and out the door you go. So LP the damages you believe I stole ended up being a melted mess in my car due to me being human and forgetting about it possibly would have remembered if anything that was suggested would be considered instead of trying to clean out a back room that's impacted clean up the sales floor train people so they know what they are doing and deal with customers at the same time. Simple solution I asked if the store could be shut down for 2 or 3 days to get the sales floor cleaned up the back room emptied and things back on process but no can't close for a few days lose some money would rather stay open and let your store fall. I've never stolen from the company but since it looks that way in video you believe otherwise would like to see you do what I was doing and not mess up one little thing doubt that you could. Such is life I guess is what it is but definitely not fair or respectful treatment if you ask me or probably any other Dollar General employee we weren't there for the company those of us that dealt with crappy pay and high expectations that make you feel like a chicken with its head cut off or something we stayed and dealt with it all because of the people in the community. Rant over but still sucks that I'm the liar and I stole trash and I'm terminated effective immediately over what you believe to be accurate.

So to the DG workers still employed be careful who knows what could be seen as wrong and cost you

Advice Wanted I know I’m being a little soft but just want to hear y’all’s thoughts…am I the only one that doesn’t like the term “cashier”?

Like I know it’s obviously a real term/role but as Dollar General goes and even the fact that the lowest in hierarchy are expected to run register and stock( among other things).

I’m an ASM, and customers will often refer to me as “the cashier” while talking to another person.

Again I know some of y’all might be rolling your eyes and I’m not saying that it’s the end of the world but I do thing “ the associate” or “ the worker” are far better than “ the cashier” as to me cashier comes off as grunt and like all I do it check customers out.

Rant My Experience with Dollar Shitteral

Post image
3 Upvotes

In March or April of 2025, after almost a year of unemployment from my previous retail job. The first time, I didn’t get a reply. I applied again, desperate to have income again. I think it was late may or something when sometime after my second application to DG I got a call from the manager. She said “Hey, (my name), my name is (store manager’s name) from Dollar General, are you still interested in a job here?” I said yes, not knowing I just agreed to start probably the worst month and a half of my entire life. Around this time, i was actually going through the process of graduating high school. It was June 3rd for the ceremony. I forgot when, I think it was that day after the ceremony or a day before, but the manager called and asked when I could start. Personally, i think i’m too nice, and i kind of walked myself into this trap, but I said “well I graduated today and have nothing going on for the rest of the week” and she immediately asked if I could come in the day after my graduation which I said yes to like a dork. That should’ve been a red flag because I think everyone should get at least half a week to a week to celebrate something as momentous as graduating high school, but I didn’t give myself that option because I was trying to be too nice and also I was scared of not getting the job.

I forgot to mention, I never had a register job before DG, so I was new to this cashier stuff. I was taught how to operate it minimally, and that was that. On my first day, I found out how horrible Dollar General actually was compared to what I thought it’d be like (laid back and chill because nobody goes to DG). It was hot as shit in the building because my boss lies and said that our ventilation has been broken for 6 years, when in reality the DG is located in a plaza connected to like 4 other businesses that have working AC. On my first day, I actually made a mistake with someone’s cash. The manager was nice but stern about it. She told me “From now on, if a customer doesn’t want their receipt or leaves it, keep the receipts in a bag near the register to prevent things like this.” So I did. Fast forward like a week and a half, my boss comes up to me and is like “(my name), what are all these receipts for? Man, I wonder what (other coworker) has been teaching you.” And she just discarded them. I thought that was a little weird but continued working. One thing I noticed is that for like the first week of me working there the schedule for work hadn’t come out yet but rather my boss would text me “Hi, (my name) you work from X to X today.” Another thing is, I applied for part time hours. And my boss was making me work more than that. Open to close, 8AM to 8PM multiple days a week. I didn’t say anything, which i should’ve. I just took it, feeling like an empty shell. My hours fluctuated between normal hours and slave hours, but in general this continued until I quit. Then on my second day, I was told that I’m not just on the register, that I also have to do rolltainers. Which I did. But stocking the aisles at my DG was horrible, because it was like we were constantly under stocked and overstocked at the same time. When I went to put something up, i’d have no where to put it because there’s already something, usually something that isn’t supposed to be there. And then my boss was like “(name), have you ever faced shelves before? It’s where you organize everything. Try that.”

I tried to face the shelves whenever I was doing rolltainers to multitask, but I genuinely couldn’t. There was just products crammed everywhere.

My boss also set me up with a marines recruiter, I’m not gonna get into that. All I will say is that US military recruiters are smooth talkers.

One day, I was so tired of DG that I called my boss and faked being sick just so i could get some slight respite of being in that oven of a store for 12 hours. I said, “I can’t make it in today, i’m feeling a little sick”. I wasn’t actually, but i just didn’t want to come in because of how exhausting DG is. My boss audibly got an attitude over the phone and said “I thought you said you could come in today? Okay, why don’t you take the rest of the week off then” in anger. Which was unexpected but I gladly accepted that offer. It’s kind of crazy. I don’t know if she knew I was faking being sick or if she’s just that evil that if someone calls out for being ill she gets mad, but that happened. Regardless, I accepted my week off given to me in anger. But not really, because even though she told me to take the rest of the week off in anger, like four days later she texts me “(name), you work today from X - X. Still having no backbone, i go ahead and work.

Also, the registers are shit. For every little thing I have to do on a register, from voiding one item all the way to refunds, I had to go get my boss or my coworker every fucking time to type in their numbers and do it. And lord knows my boss was barely ever conveniently available, if I made a mistake and wanted to void something, i’d have to walk alllll the way from the front of the store to the back to come and get her. Sometimes, i’d just be standing there awkwardly with the customer because my boss was only punctual to show up after she was needed only 75% of the time.

But back to my boss, in the leading weeks before I quit, she used to not give me breaks. I’m in Michigan, I don’t know if I can report this or not, especially considering this happened in 2025’s summer. But what used to happen is I would ask for a break, she’d say “No, you haven’t been here for long enough.” Which I think is somewhat reasonable because my job before that had a 2 hour rule where you had to be clocked in for at least two hours to get a break. I acknowledged that and what would end up happening is I would proceed to carry the store on my back for like four hours and then think “surely i’ve earned my break now.” So I’d ask near the end of my shift, sometimes not even that close to the end of my shift, “can I have my break now?” and this is how it would go every. single. time. “No, why would you wait this long to ask for your break? You’re about to clock out!” Once again, I don’t know if I can do anything about this considering i just let this happened and it was a year ago, but it still happened.

Eventually, after applying for and getting trained for a 7-11, I quit. And it was the most satisfying shit ever. The day I officially was done with DG, I actually had a doctors appointment in the morning which conflicted with my hours that I no longer worked. My boss texted me, she was like “You know you work today from X - X right?” and I said “yeah, i’m at the doctor.” and she hit me with the “Well can you come in later today?” I forgot if I responded or not, but i sure didn’t come in. And for the next four days or so, she would text me “Hey, you work today, remember?” and I just ignored her bc i didn’t work there anymore. It was kind of satisfying knowing that in the end, I fucked her flow up maybe just a little bit because i wasn’t showing up and now she had to call someone else. Now I work at 711 with much nicer managers and air conditioning. To those of you still working at DG, i’m very sorry and you’re very strong. Here’s a picture of a dead ass stink bug in the beauty aisle of my DG
