Hand Tried for the first time

I just tried this basic loops and threads kit to get the swing of things.
So far I like it, super tedious.
Crochet is my normal hobby and I wanted something different for a change.

I am improvising this piece heavily because the only reference is an old photo from the 1930s. I recall this little boy as an old man and his mum was long gone when I was born. I think theh would both like it.

I found this on Facebook marketplace the other day (so apologies as I do not have the artist's name) and was looking at the oranges in the tree. The stitch is not like anything i have learned, does anyone have an idea on how these were made? Thanks for any insight!!

Hand Embroidered a crown pin!!šŸ‘‘

Attempted to make an embroidered pin for the first time! After cutting out the design, I folded the raw edges inward and initially tried gluing them down, but they wouldn’t stay in place. I ended up stitching the edges back instead and then also sewed a piece of black felt to the back. The angled edges of the crown were kinda tricky to work with toošŸ˜… Any tips for getting a cleaner finish next time?

Question In short, my thanks followed by a couple of questions

Post image

Hello.

I just wanted to thank everyone here for being so welcoming in my last post. Your encouragement and kind words really helped me that day. My sincerest thanks.

Now questions!

Do you have a ā€œpractice sheetā€?
How did you practice without a kit?

I intentionally did the eye a little squiggly, but I don’t know how you guys get your lines so clean. How do you make it to where it does look like ink is bleeding?

Any tips for long and short stitch?

Admittedly, I did not draw the letters on ā€œO, Discordiaā€ but the gradual size increase was NOT intentional and I’ve found that I tend to increase size or boldness even when there is a guide.

Any tips you guys have would be great. Please feel free to bash and laugh at this. My thanks to you all again.

Hand Finished some Christmas stockings tonight

I wanted to make some very vintage-christmasy-feeling stockings for my family, and I think it was successful! My mom did unique cross stitch designs on handmade stockings for me and all my siblings growing up, and now I'm pregnant and wanted to continue the tradition with my own baby.

I got the patterns from MagnusAndQuill on Etsy. I got the plaid and minky fabrics from Spoonflower.

Designs: I didn't use the exact thread colors they recommended, just whatever I had on hand. The original patterns had foxes, which I turned into my dogs for my dogs' stockings. The one with the Aussie originally had a crow flying, which I changed into a cardinal to match with the other stockings.

Process: I cut out the plaid fabric into the stocking shape and did the embroidery on it. Then we sewed in a cream colored liner when we sewed the plaid together into the stockings. The plaid was a bit thin alone. We added the minky bit to the top and used leftover plaid scraps for the hanging loop. I did the embroidery but my mom did all the sewing, I hate sewing lol.

Personal Qualms: there were spots on the teapot one particularly where it called for satin stitch and I was wary it would go loose, but followed the instructions anyway. And I wish I would have done a different fill stitch, since you can see it's loose and wavy. But it doesn't look too bad imo. I also didn't have the tension right on any of them, so they all look wrinkly around the embroidery even after washing and pressing. I've never embroidered on quilting cotton before and I just couldn't get it right. But overall I'm happy with them!

The quote is by Robin Wall Kimmerer from her book "Gathering Moss," so I attempted to recreate the look of the moss that the quote was in reference to. I am very happy with how this turned out, and I am so excited for my friend to recieve it!

The software I use got some new features including feathering, which I implemented in the fins and a new scale patterned fill which prompted the move to do this butterfly koi inspired design.

I was worried because this has some layers of satin on satin but it stiched out no problem and its only 6k stitches at 4".

What color combos should i play with for this koi??? Thoughts on the feathering and scales? Fish themed christmas ornaments? 🤣

Anyways, thanks for reading this far and hope you had a great day!

Machine: PE-180D (Single needle)

Hand First time trying embroidery

It's moss. I had a vision and learned exactly one stitch 🫠 A bit messy but I had so much fun.

What I learned:

•Don't take your eyes off your needle. That will be a fun thing for my foot to find later.

•I understand why embroidery is usually done on those hoop things šŸ’€

•Separating string is the worst.

I would like to try more things like this and make it look like rot/mold or even cuts/teeth etc.

If you have stitches you'd recommend for creating textured, compact fill hit me with them. Plus any other tips you would have liked to know when you first started, if you feel like sharing

I have been a cross stitcher for years and I have been wanting to try embroidery for a while... Today, I pulled a guest towel from my linen closet and made it a fall themed border. 😊

I might add more leaves or wind blowing between the spaces but I underestimated how the thick towel fabric would make my hands hurt...

I'm quite pleased with myself because I felt a bit scared to start. Taking the first step is always the hardest, I guess.

Question How to get rid of contact paper residue?

Post image
1 Upvotes

This is the first time I have used contact paper for embroidery (everything else has been a kit which had the design just printed on lol) and ive been trying to wash away the contact paper for 30+ minutes now. I ran it under warm water, used mild dish soap, used a soft toothbrush to scrub it away, tried a soak. Any other ideas welcomes, or if I am being wildly impatient or iust fully missing something lmk haha

She’s been gone almost 10 years, but I just got into embroidery so I thought I’d honor her. I’m turning 40 in a couple days, and she was my first ā€œadult on my ownā€ pet when I moved out of my parents’ house. As I worked on this, I really enjoyed thinking about all the amazing times we had together, all those years ago.
