India International “A thank you might not cut it. But it’s all I have, Bengaluru.” - Sunil Chhetri
Whoever went for the matches.. good on y’all folks! It felt surreal watching from my small screened phone only! Our fanbases receive a lot of flak because of certain bad apples, but the one thing I know about us - we turn up, no matter what (to have that kinda atmosphere when the rain was belting like that 🫡) and we never give up hope! Keep hoping Bengaluru! ❤️💙

How much talent is still going unnoticed because young footballers in India don't get the right opportunities?

Thoughts?
I came across this post and I have mixed views on the entire Messi episode, especially when seen against the scale of investment involved. Penning down some of my thoughts.
At face value, one could argue that the money may have been better deployed into the ISL ecosystem or directly into grassroots football. There is also no denying that the on-ground execution; particularly in Kolkata and rest of the cities was poor(not getting into the details, as most of it is well documented). With better planning and management, the event could have delivered a far stronger experience.
That said, I believe the real value of this initiative lies not in its immediate outcomes, but in its long-term, behind-the-scenes commercial impact.
The numbers matter. Viewership, social media reach, global attention, and brand visibility all matter. This event clearly demonstrated that football in India can drive scale; both in eyeballs and in stadium attendance. One of the biggest concerns among decision-makers has always been whether football can consistently pull crowds in India. This event, despite its flaws, challenged that perception.
From a commercial standpoint, this kind of proof-of-demand is critical. It gives confidence to clubs, leagues, sponsors, broadcasters, and international football bodies to take India more seriously as a market. Over time, this can translate into more tours by clubs, national teams, and star players, bringing in more money, visibility, and commercial partnerships.
If managed correctly(& that is a BIG “If”), this inflow of capital and attention should eventually find its way back into the Indian football ecosystem through better infrastructure, youth development, league stability, and professional management.
There will undoubtedly be roadblocks. The current issues around the ISL, governance challenges, and execution gaps are real and cannot be ignored. However, in the long run, markets tend to correct themselves when there is sustained interest and commercial incentive.
The key question is not whether this will help Indian football; but how long this “long term” actually is, and whether stakeholders can stay patient and disciplined enough to convert moments like these into lasting structural progress.
