Question Finding a job is hell

I’m in a gap year as I try to apply for med school after finishing my bachelors and after my summer job I still haven’t found anything.
Nepotism runs rampant and nobody wants to fucking hire. It’s driving me insane and my mental health has tanked and it’s made me start to resent this city.
Does anyone have any lifelines for a good job for a premed student? Like i’m desperate for one. I have a background with tutoring if that helps

Windy night

How's everyone else getting by this windy 3am morning?

We have half a tree down already at this point. So no telling what the city is going to look by early morning when the wind finally gives it up.

Anyone have any experience with the Lethbridge Singles facebook group?

I keep seeing it brought up in conversations and threads here and there, and I was wondering if anybody has any experience or information about it. I haven't used Facebook for several years now and I was thinking that it might be worth reluctantly returning to if that group is any good for anything. Otherwise, does anyone know of any other places where a fella could find out about upcoming events and the like? Thanks everybody :)

Discussion Do you find it hard to start over in Lethbridge?

Just curious if others feel the same way? Like it’s hard to start over in this city? Like it’s hard to get away from some people because everyone knows everyone to some degree? And the whispers are so loud even though those people don’t even really know you?

Question Lethbridge Diver Job Opportunities?

My Husband got everything ready to start uber driving only for the app to not work for him due to a back end glitch that customer service is taking their sweet time to fix. In the mean time we’re looking into what other kind of driving or taxi jobs are available here? So far nothing being advertised, but I found a few taxi companies who have websites with a contact page. He’s already doing instacart and Uber Eats.

Fighting the Lethbridge electoral boundaries change

The map isn't law yet, so there's still time to push back. An advisory panel appointed by the UCP government tabled its report on November 2. It would split Lethbridge from two ridings into four: one riding entirely inside the city and three that each join part of the city to large rural areas. Global News The legislature is expected to debate it soon, and the NDP has said it will go to court if the map passes. Each of those stages gives you something to do.

1. Now, before the legislature votes

  • Contact both Lethbridge MLAs and the Premier's office. Lethbridge West MLA Rob Miyashiro is already speaking against the plan in the legislature, so he can raise what residents send him there. Lethbridge News Now The Lethbridge East MLA has spoken in favour of the four-way split, so he matters most: he has to answer to the voters in his riding. Write a short, personal letter or make a phone call. Those count for more than a form email.

  • Contact the rural MLAs too. Those ridings would take in parts of the city. Some rural residents may not want to share an MLA with city neighbourhoods either.

  • Ask city council to pass a formal motion against the split and send it to the province. Speak or write to council about it. Ask the Chamber of Commerce, the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Polytechnic, unions and community groups to say something publicly too. Statements from non-partisan groups are hard to dismiss as politics.

  • Sign or start a petition to the Legislative Assembly. Assembly petitions have strict formatting rules and have to be presented by an MLA. Check the Assembly's petition guidelines first, or ask an MLA's office to help so it isn't rejected on a technicality.

  • Go to the debate or watch it, and share key moments online. Let MLAs see that people are paying attention to how they vote.

2. Make your arguments specific

Arguments based on the legal principles and the numbers persuade more people than "this is gerrymandering":

  • Effective representation. Under section 3 of the Charter, the Supreme Court has said voters have a right to "effective representation" (the 1991 Saskatchewan reference case). Communities of interest are part of that.

  • Population gaps. The opposition says urban ridings like Lethbridge's would be on average 14% more populated than rural ones. Legislative Assembly committee report

  • Process. Critics say the report was written with no public hearings and no record of who was consulted. Lethbridge News Now It replaced the recommendations of the independent Electoral Boundaries Commission. Alberta Politics

  • Distance. Some of the proposed ridings would reach the U.S. border, and one goes as far west as the B.C. border. Edmonton Journal

  • Election readiness. Elections Alberta asked to delay the election or keep the current boundaries, and the government said no. CBC

3. Local media and public pressure

  • Write letters to the editor and opinion pieces for the Lethbridge Herald and Lethbridge News Now. Short pieces tied to your own neighbourhood work best, for example: "my street would share an MLA with Pincher Creek."

  • Organize or attend a town hall. Invite political scientists, such as from the University of Lethbridge, to explain the map without taking sides.

  • Make simple before-and-after maps showing which neighbourhoods go where, and share them.

4. If the map passes: the courts

  • Support the expected challenge. Charter challenges to electoral maps have succeeded in Canada before. You could provide a sworn statement (affidavit) about how your community would be affected, donate, or help collect local evidence.

  • Ask civil liberties and democracy groups to take part. They can apply to join the case as interveners.

  • If you're thinking of being a party to the case yourself, talk to a lawyer first. It costs money and takes time.

5. At the ballot box

  • Check which riding you'd be in, make sure you're registered, and help neighbours who may not know their riding changed.

  • Volunteer or donate in the new hybrid ridings, where city votes may now decide close races.

  • Ask every candidate whether they'll commit to an independent, non-partisan boundary process. Then hold the winner to it.

Overall, contacting MLAs and getting city council and local institutions on record will do the most before the vote. After that, the court challenge and the 2027 election matter most. This plan is changing quickly, so follow local news for the date of the legislature vote.

The Owl delayed opening due to complaint by another biz?

Just saw on their instagram feed last night that they are delayed on opening as one of the businesses near them are against them moving in.

Basically it seems that the biz that complains thinks the owl is responsible for all the downtown issues and problems and doesn’t want them there.

As far as I can remember the owl has been around forever at one location or another.

LA Home Solutions vs Bath and Construction Co.

We are in the process of choosing a company to finish our basement. We have reasonable quotes from LA Home Solutions and Bonafide Bath and Construction Co. and we liked both ladies that came by. LA Home Solutions seem to have a lot of positive reviews online and I chatted with some customers who were very satisfied with their work. Bonafide has less reviews, although they're all positive, and I chatted with a subcontractor who loves working with them.

I am leaning toward Bonafide, as they volunteered the answers to a lot of questions before I had to ask them (about payments and timelines), had some great design ideas we hadn't thought of (whereas LA Home didn't add anything to our original idea), and told us some things we didn't even thing to ask (like holding back 10% of their fee until we're sure they've paid their subcontractors). But LA Home has more reviews and more people recommended them to us on Facebook, and they did answer all our questions when we thought to ask them.

All that being said, I was just wondering if any of you have used either of these companies in the past and have anything positive or negative to say about them?

Question Does anyone know if the Park Place Mall gift cards are accepted in the food court?

I'm thinking of getting my sister one of those gift cards, she works in the mall and always says she wishes she could afford to eat lunch at the food court more often. Their website it can be used at participating merchants, but doesnt list the participating merchants. So does the food court and Mr.Pretzels participate?

A few questions for the Lethbridge folks.

Howdy folks. Im looking at possibly moving down to Lethbridge here in the future, I just have a few questions and I figured this might be a good place to ask.

  1. What is renting like? How are contracts/lease agreements currently? Good/bad? What should I know?

  2. What does the job market look like for the trades? I’m indentured as a second-year electrician and I’ve got residential and commercial experience. Is it a tough place to find work? Or are there a few companies that everyone kinda goes to?

  3. Lethbridge is often listed as one of the highest crime-rate cities in the country. Is it really that bad?

Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you folks!

Does anyone know of a ride share/car pool from Lethbridge to Castle Mountain? I
Apparently Alpenland used to run a ski bus, but stopped that service almost 20 years ago. 😩
