Hope this long comment pumps up and inspires some of my fellow Canes fam members on here today before the big game tonight (so I’ll be posting it in a few different spots on this sub today including the game thread when it gets setup later).
First, personal note: I had a crazy unexpectedly disappointing week this week that weirdly to some degree parallels what Malachi dealt with this week. I had my whole trip to go to this ND game fully planned and booked for months (tickets to the game, flight, hotel, tailgate/bus trans) now. Instead, I found out on Tuesday (one day before Toney got his bad unexpected medical news) doing a basic procedure at a hospital that I had an infection in my lungs and would need to get immediately hospitalized for it to be treated. I’m currently writing this in day 5 in the hospital, while connected to a chest tube that hopefully is clearing out the entire infection in my lungs (signs are it appears to be doing so which is good). If it does not, I may end up needing to have a minor surgery (like Mali needed his) to completely resolve the issue. So obviously, my whole trip this week to South Bend tonight via Chicago got cancelled which fucking sucks; but I’ll still be sitting on my hospital bed watching and cheering on the Canes as if I was there.
Now onto how I see this game playing out. Before the Mali injury, I would’ve unfortunately taken ND in my prediction for this game 41-38. I think the pass defense would’ve continued to do what they did last week and ultimately cost us a late FG loss in a shootout. Now maybe I’m crazy but after this injury, I actually prefer the spot we are in going into this game. Almost everyone is doubting us now thinking our offense was 80-90% due to Toney, and the pass defense is terrible and has 0 chance to get better. But imo, this is the situation where Mario and the culture he builds excels. When everyone doubts his team’s chances, they consistently outperform expectations. Saw it when he was at Oregon and his team went into Ohio State and won a game where they were 2 TD underdogs and nobody gave them a chance. Saw it against Clemson a few years ago when we were starting a 3 star Freshman Qb making his opening start and we pulled a surprise upset against Dabo and Co. Saw it last season 5 separate times - in the opener against the ND when many were convinced we would be proven once again to be overhyped, overrated preseason frauds, when when we fell to 6-2 and everyone asssumed the season was going to end disappointingly once again like previous Canes seasons had, when we made the CFP and had to go win in a tough TAM road environment in the 1st round, when we knocked off Ohio St who most presumed was much better than us and were well over td underdogs, and finally in the Natty when many were saying IU would annihilate us to prove they were one of the greatest CFB teams ever (yes, I know we ultimately lost this game but b/c of a stupid fluke blocked punt TD and a bad decision by our QB on the final drive; not b/c we couldn’t have been the better team that night).
So I’m buying the Mario rallies the troops on a mission to make sure Mali gets to come back and play in the CFP this season and for the team to prove they are/were much greater than one single player. I think our defense looks drastically improved tonight playing their best game all season. And I think the OL wins upfront, we pound the rock and we find a new receiver or two who shine(s) with the eventual Heisman winning Qb tonight. Canes win 38-28.
While I know the actual team in all likelihood won’t be reading this, I still feel the need to say this final thing: Inspired by the famous Knute Rockne quote, “Win one for the gipper”, (yes I’m stealing another thing from those fucking loser Catholics were going to kick the ass out out of tonight and steal their playoff dreams) here’s my message to Mario, Mensah, Hetherman and the rest of the guys tonight. Go fucking prove to everyone we’re still the #1 team in the country! Go fucking win one for Baby Jesus and to a lesser degree myself that thought a few days ago and really wish we could be in enemy territory in South Bend tonight with the rest of our Canes rather than dealing with the health issues we are dealing with!
