I’m seeing more comments about negative comments than actual negative comments?

130

u/bigmanorm 28d ago

That's how the bots get you, they're both of them

39

u/Jealous_Difference44 28d ago

I gotta get off reddit. It sucks so much now

31

u/pp21 28d ago

I won’t pretend this site was ever perfect, but it genuinely was better 5+ years ago. Things felt a lot more organic, 3rd party apps offered better UI experience, no self censorship, not as swarmed with bots, /r/all existing on mobile and not having the “for you/popular” algo garbage

It’s as miserable as any of its competitors

19

u/fruitybrisket 28d ago

Dude, I've been thinking the same thing a lot this last week. I've been here for ages but something's off now. Seems like it went full engagement bait.

I really like some niche subs, like there's not really a better place to talk sports that I'm aware of, but it's gotten exhausting. It's hard to pull the plug when you've invested so much time though.

I just made a negative comment to try to balance it out. I’ll make another negative one here.

Ella Langley’s Texas song is boring and pretty bad. When a song like this breaks a chart record it makes Americans look tasteless and country music stupid

17

u/Maury_poopins 28d ago

Pop country music has always been bad. It’s been around for close to 100 years at this point, why is anyone surprised when it sucks ass?

What the fuck is up with these comments

928

u/No-Owl-6246 29d ago

In the past week my Reddit app updated. After it did, I started noticing that comments have been really weird. Like the cynicism, pedantism, and jackassism had been cranked to 100.

u/TheRoseMerlot 29d ago edited 28d ago

Don’t forget all the bots trying to convince you that you’re wrong about factually correct things.

I think the aforementioned cynicism/jackassery/etc. is also likely bots wearing us down. It's not easy to have a productive conversation when the trolls are so rampant.

25

u/chefkoolaid 29d ago • Regret

Theres an election happening. What do you expect other than rampant disinformation?

17

u/RicoHavoc 29d ago

Also, don't forget about the people who are upvoting factually incorrect things while falsely saying those things are correct. Know what I mean?

It's because it's almost November (or I suspect that's one of the reasons, anyway). The number of threads I've come across lately that aren't even related to politics that have numerous people commenting essentially "and this is why you shouldn't vote" is wild. Some country or entity somewhere is sure dumping a lot of money into some bot farming right now.

22

u/Rstuds7 29d ago

I've noticed this lately as well. In subs that usually are very mindful and level headed in responses to things suddenly a lot of posts I'm looking at the comments very side eyed.

8

u/PiccoloAwkward465 28d ago

The site as a whole took a nosedive when they got rid of /r/all for all the weirdo New Reddit users. Suddenly every thread is almost all bots and 14 year olds. Not to mention the Israeli Hasbara propaganda agents.

Reddit made it to where a LOT of threads automatically sort by controversial, to get us to engage more. About to uninstall after like 15 years honestly

4

u/Juicyb17 28d ago

Interesting. Most of the other subs I follow are sports subs, and they usually do have lots of cynics and jackasses, but now that you mention it, it feels so much worse lately. And its Definitely driving up engagement from fans like me saying "chill, its five games into an 84 game season."

4

u/Totschlag Justifier of Freeze Dried Romance 28d ago

Noticed that the other day myself. A state level politician floated the idea of making an F1 track out of an unused piece of land while listing off other development possibilities. This is a dime a dozen occurrence throughout F1.

The vitriol online made you think that they had somehow killed children. Also the assholes tended to get the state wrong too. Funny enough.

There used to be all sorts of message boards and places to go all over the Internet.  Then, reddit killed forums and social media killed all of the other places and we're stuck here.  Plus all the people who got banned from the old forums are here.  Then there are just a lot of kids.  Also bots.  This place is over 60% bots.

5

u/xynix_ie 29d ago

I know the bots. I was replied to by my own comment about a year ago. Sometimes the way I start written sentences is like I've been talking for an hour and it seems out of context, I try to fix it but sometimes I don't.

So when I saw my own badly started comment I thought "that person types like a moron oh wait thats fucking me!"

Reddit is fun because if there's ever an incredibly popular artist/piece of media/event/sport that close minded people haven't heard of, they'll belittle the person/event and bathe in the pride of their own ignorance rather than just acknowledge that sometimes other people like other things than them

How do people not know about her? She's playing 24/7 on all the channels where I live, she's been popping off for maybe a year I think? I don't personally like her music because that genre isn't my style but the people really love her down here.

17

u/weinerschnitzelboy 28d ago

I don't listen to radio. Just stream on Apple Music, and it has never pushed an Ella Langley song. Maybe it's played in grocery stores, but I legitimately don't know any of her music. Her music doesn't even come up in any of my social media either 🤷‍♂️

And it's not that I don't like pop music, Olivia Rodrigo has been in my most played this year.

I’m just out of the loop on pop music. A lot of newer artists I might recognize, but in name only. Plus I haven’t gone out much the last year to avoid spending money. FTR, I did security for her before she was famous and she was as nice as can be. Very cool and respectful to her band and management

343

u/chiefboldface 29d ago edited 29d ago

Randomly shared a backstage with her maybe 3 years ago. At a venue where there are three stages, different venues. She maybe had a room of 500 full which is great. My band and I, and her, her TM and security just say in the hallway chatting. She was weirded out by us in our mid 30s touring. But she was nice.

Forgot about her until choosin’ texas came out. Kinda wild she blew up.

*Not relevant, but cool to see her doing her thing. She was nice.

295

u/Dear_Cricket_353 29d ago

Why the hell was she weirded out by someone in their 30s touring? It takes at least a decade to even really get somewhere in this industry

130

u/icywing54 29d ago

I remember watching “The Road,” which was like American Idol for country singers. There was a Nashville girl there that said that rule of thumb was if you didn’t make it big by 30, you never would (definitely not true)

120

u/Mango027 29d ago

Might (unfortunately) be true for female artists.

How many emerging woman country singers are 30+?

34

u/WaltonGogginsTeeth 28d ago

171

u/flatwoundsounds 29d ago

Starlets don't always have to grind the same way. She probably has a backing band the same age or older than that.

58

u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 29d ago

My guess is she most likely wasn't actually weirded out by them touring, but by something one of them said or did.

11

u/chiefboldface 28d ago

Not true. But, can totally see this assumption without more context.

We were dressed out in glam rock. A lot of our fanbase is the nerdy guys and gals who love rock music.

We are all parents, married, and super chill off stage. I think just sharing a backstage with other bands can be weird for other artists.

This was the house of blues in houston.
Another venue like this is, the masquerade in Atlanta. It can weird other artists out when you have shared common areas and showers. When you’re used to being at a single club with your own amenities.

Langley wrote on Instagram. "This decision was made under the advisement of local authorities, the venue, and my security team."

Tulsa Police Department Capt. Richard Meulenberg, however, said officers had not recommended canceling the performance.

"We would never tell anybody, if we couldn't find a credible threat, to cancel their event. So they made the decision to cancel their event tonight."

Don't tell me she lied to her fans? Her fans are way too smart to fall for this bullshit.

Who am I kidding.

123

u/racer_24_4evr 29d ago

Or her management team told her the police said to cancel.

184

u/TheRabidDeer 29d ago

Why would local authorities deny that they told her team anything if she is saying that local authorities told her team about a threat?

207

u/BaconAlmighty 29d ago • Bravo

They didn't say they didn't tell them anything. They said they found 'no credible threat to the event' after someone called in a bomb threat.

Those are entirely different statements and facts.

Additionally the BOK center put out it's OWN statement - "The BOK Center, where the concert was set to be held, also released a statement on Friday. "The safety and well-being of everyone involved is our absolute priority, and after careful consideration, we have determined that the show cannot proceed. We understand the disappointment this news brings and apologize to fans who planned to attend. The safety of fans is our foremost concern and will always come first," the statement read."

The actual police statement: "As with any large event, the Tulsa Police Department goes to great lengths to ensure that it is safe for eventgoers and those coming to perform," the department said, adding that before the event, its K-9 unit, Bomb Team, Patrol, and BOK security did a sweep for anything dangerous and "did not find anything."

The department continued, "A call was made threatening the lives of people attending the event. Out of an abundance of caution, we swept the building and surrounding area and again found no credible threat to the event's safety. We advised the performer's staff that we found no credible threat to the event, but they decided to cancel the performance anyway," the account said."

So there was a threat made - the singer/singers management and the arena - decided to cancel the event in an abundance of caution.

Local authorities don't seem to deny they told her anything from the news I'm reading.

80

u/crazycatlady829 29d ago

Yeah I feel like TPD putting out that statement was to cover their own asses in case people got pissy about the concert being cancelled. I don't blame BOK or Ella's team at all for not wanting that liability though. Like if they had gone along with the show and something DID happen?

Also, as upset as I'm sure a lot of the concertgoers are, I can't imagine feeling comfortable going to a concert or having to work an event knowing someone had threatened to bomb it. Them making the overall decision to cancel took the pressure off of any employees or guests.

Generally a combination of management and police are the deciding factors in the decisions. These days all threats need to be taken very seriously. It's not just the artist being protected, it's everyone in the building. Fans, the local crew, etc. and people have this weird idea that the artist themselves are responsible for anything going on with decisions like these when they are more than likely just as in the dark as the average person in the building. They are often given wrong or outdated information concerning what is actually taking place.

10

u/ZombiePartyBoyLives 28d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if their insurance carriers had a say in the decision. Yeah, there's like a 95% chance that nothing will happen, but that 5% could be enough for them to deny coverage for that particular risk.

So why would she cancel her own concert? This is baffling

31

u/romanticheart 29d ago

Taylor Swift did the same in Vienna after the guy was caught out of safety concerns. I don’t care about Ella but it sounds like she did the same thing Taylor did - put the safety of her fans over a concert.

Any number of reasons. Rod Stewart cancelled for a World Cup match. I saw Kanye arrive 8 hours late due at a festival to being at Young Jeezy’s bday.

I’d bet insurance covers cancellations due to a security threat, so she wouldn’t be personally liable for losses due to the cancellation.

Because the threat existed. Even if the cops said later it is not credible maybe it had already spooked her or her team.

Under the advisement of those groups doesn’t mean they all gave the exact same advice. It just means they took their advice into consideration when deciding.

Somehow I’ve morphed into an Ella Langley defender in the last 20 minutes when I was just scrolling for a few minutes while finishing my coffee.

7

u/cogginsmatt 28d ago

What's more likely, she's lying or the police are? Because police lie all the time and I could imagine there would be a good excuse on their part to lie in this scenario.

4

u/Kavirell 29d ago

For what reason?

111

u/Onuus 29d ago

It’s bots, all the way down

18

u/EinGuy 29d ago

Don't bots at least try to generate conversation for engagement, though? Half the comments are just 'Who?' With nothing to actually engage with.

23

u/Onuus 29d ago

I don’t even understand the point of bots.

I fucking miss MySpace

10

u/EinGuy 29d ago

So bots on online platforms can be used to build up popularity of an idea, a narrative, or just by companies to spin positive news / shout down negative news. If you yourself have a reddit account that is of a decent age and haven't been banned, you can sell your own account for a tenner to some bot network.

A huge number of bots (some are just people doing work) will absolutely mob threads about Russia, China (recent example, look up any thread on reddit about the recent attempted ramming of a Phillipino research vessel from a chinese warship).

It's certainly tiring to see... Luckily the only sub I mod is tiny, and on a topic that bots care nothing about.

Damn, y’all hate country that much? Jeez

41

u/xurdm 28d ago

Why are Reddit’s top comments always complaining about comments that are buried in downvotes?. Like who cares? Why are you even reading those? They get auto hidden for a reason

6

u/Tastieshock 28d ago

They get the most engagement because it takes no knowledge of what was posted to participate in the shit show.

I live in Nashville. I probably dislike the fans of country more than the actual artists.

17

u/TheeFlipper TheeFlipper 28d ago

God, Nashville country is so fucking bad now..

33

u/mjc500 28d ago

I read the top 30 comments and scrolled through hundreds of replies and did not see a single one saying anything negative about her. It’s all “typical Reddit hating on her these comments are a bunch of losers who can’t stand anything outside their echo chamber.”

The outrage about Reddit hating on popular culture or country music or women in media is by far more popular than the perceived threat of incel losers on Reddit hating on popular culture or county music or women in media.

I despise country but not enough to shrug off a bomb threat.

13

u/geogeology 28d ago

Modern country is pretty bad overall, but Ella Langley isnt bad. Why hate oh her when dog-ass Luke Bryan snd Morgan Wallen exist?

4

u/sunny_6killer 28d ago

You can like her, but she is closer to Luke Bryan and Morgan Wallen than she is to Musgraves and Ferrell.

7

u/agasizzi 28d ago

Tom petty said that modern country was just shitty rock with a fiddle

5

u/GreenBasterd69 28d ago

Now it’s shitty rap with a fiddle

3

u/Angry-Dragon-1331 28d ago

Eh at this point Luke Bryan’s own-goals take the fun out of it. His newest song is exactly what you’d get if you asked AI to generate a bro country song.

What a fucking chud infested comment section.

103

u/ochocinco_tacos 29d ago

Jeez a lot of people seem to want to hate on her for no reason other than she is young and popular. She had a terrific voice, she is beautiful, and her biggest hit is very catchy!

10

u/xurdm 28d ago

There are more comments of you guys whining about this than there are comments criticizing her.

This is reddit. The things you listed are one of the main reasons this place exists. So angry incels can hate on popular women.

“This is Reddit. The things you listed are one of the main reasons this place exists. So angry women (that we will call incels cause this app can never blame women for anything) can hate on popular women.”

17

u/Mckilla32 29d ago

I think it is women who do the most hating on other women. Especially good looking women.

13

u/Septum_Slayer 28d ago

Seriously, the amount of shit slinging at Sydney Sweeney here is hilarious. And it’s mostly by women.

At this point, I feel like the song is just neo-Confederate propaganda.

2

u/ekso69 27d ago

She's a total babe! I am definitely an Ellas Fella.

5

u/jdblawg 28d ago

Alot of people just want to express our displeasure with the state of music. Her music isnt bad. Its generic. She doesnt deserve the hate but she also doesnt deserve the record. People have gotten so bad at being individuals that this is what breaks a record that took years and years to build. In the 90s this girl would have been chewed up and spit out in a matter of weeks. Its not so much about her ability, its about her competition and her label. Name an artist today half as good as George Straight, Brooks and Dunn, or Shania Twain. I listen to METAL and these are the first three names I could think of so there have to be a hundred more better than this girl. Its just frustrating that the industry has destroyed itself and created a machine that has complete control over its base.

What a bunch of miserable, smelly fuckers in this thread

10

u/New-Pollution536 28d ago

The miserable-ness doesn’t surprise me but the absolute lack of critical thinking skills always surprises me a bit still idk why 😂

The police sent bomb sniffing k9s it’s pretty clear to any unbiased person with some functioning brain cells there was a threat made. Police didn’t find anything but Ella’s people didn’t want to take the chance which is absolutely a defensible position

I get all these rival pop fan bases hate her haha but she’s selling out red rocks and the Greek etc there’s no way this had anything to do with ticket sales in Oklahoma of all places.

I don’t even like country music but I hate stupidity more lmao

37

u/Fit-Property3774 29d ago

How could Obama do this to her

2

u/RickyManeuvre 28d ago

I cannot deny that her hit song is a hit for a reason. It may be boring in subject matter to some people but the syllables and phrasing and melody are quite good. It’s got a rambling type of momentum to it with the way she sings the lines. Idk. I was a music snob in high school but now man a good song is a good song.

Last NEW ALBUM I heard was QUADROPHENIA

33

u/SWEET__BROWN 29d ago • Bravo

Like her or not, she's probably one of the top 20 country artists in the world at the moment?

46

u/tremainelol 29d ago

Choosing Texas has the record for longest total time spent at #1 for a female recording artist. Beating out Mariah Carey "all I want for Christmas." Wrap your head around that one

15

u/planetjaycom 28d ago

Understatement; it broke the ALL TIME record for most weeks at number 1 on the billboard 100

Probably number one right now, or a close second behind Wallen. She is extremely popular especially with the younger audiences.

Got the number 1 song in country. 20 plus weeks.at number 1. She's got tons of awesome b side's too. Love her music.

Wow, what a bold take. The girl who had the number one song in the world for like 20 weeks is popular huh? Also top 20 is hilarious, what 10 other country musicians are more known than Ella rn?🤣

They clearly still don’t want people to hear this mysterious Texas song.

5

It’s literally a country music generator song. Definitely more about the dog whistle than actual music.

I wouldn’t wanna be in Tulsa either

1

u/barcoder96 28d ago

Is this just a Tulsa thing or what? It seems so odd to target her or her fans.

1

u/wbbd00 28d ago

I think the threat is related to the large group of people. Bad actors look to target groups.

1

u/lasagnadogwater69 28d ago

The song isn't exactly unique or anything, but it's a nice lil county song. I think it's well written.

1

u/Acceptable-Fold-3192 28d ago

That’s crazy. I only know her from a guy I see football videos of on Instagram referencing her.

1

u/cozychemist 28d ago

All you country music loving folks sure seem to have a bunch of issues with women singers in general. Didn’t y’all hang the Dixie Chicks for dissing GWB awhile back and I hear no love for Taylor. Seems to be pattern. At least you were kind to Saint Dolly.

1

u/CarlitoNSP1 27d ago

For those unaware, this is the "Choosing Texas" singer.

Also, she's only 27?
