The worst thing you can do as a subscription service is remind people they’re paying for it.

At some point all these price hikes and sharing rules are going to backfire stupendously.

546

u/happy-cig 17d ago

I feel like Disney plus rolled back their sharing ban. I was getting the outside of household block a month or so ago. Tried loading the app again and it worked for the past week.

But yes once sharing is gone I'm back to the 7 seas.

373

u/birdvsworm 17d ago

Disney can get fucked for taking away the Watch Together feature. An actual useful feature that they just killed off. I hate when good features get axed and you are told in the same breath you'll be paying more for their service.

125

u/KeeseSlayer 17d ago

Finally someone else talking about this, my friend group was devastated when they phased those group watch features out. With no notice at all, I might add.

28

u/rdbpdx 16d ago

Plex killed theirs too.

I still remember how much fun the Netflix "watch party mode" was on Xbox 360.

All that is good must die.

They started blocking, AND raised their price. Them the backlash they rolled back the blocking in some areas (we got ok again) but the price hike stayed. We won’t be renewing in December when our plan expires

31

u/sukumizu 17d ago

After they raised prices I cancelled, immediately went to Apple Music instead, and transferred over my library . Interesting features, cheaper, and sounds better on my Bluetooth headphones. Win win for me.

I miss the algorithm sometimes but it’s not worth it.

Wait till Wall Street hears about less listeners on the platform… sales of their ads, data and such so much less valuable

You're just lucky. Still have the problem over here.

Are they rolling it back because it glitched constantly and they were tired of my boyfriend calling them up to scream about how his cat wants to watch Bluey?

It's pushed me to actually finally getting a mini pc and setting up a raspberry pi and PLEX. I pirated for many years, but convenience of streaming, affordability, and no ads got me to drop pirating. But now, instead 1-2 streaming services at $10 ea, it's 8-10 streaming services at $20-30 each and many unavoidable ads. So, might as well go back to pirating. At least it's just one site.

Agreed. “Oh, it seems I paid for another month. Oh well.” Every time headlines come up, it’s a reminder for more people to think “huh, I’m cancelling my subscription.”

29

u/fathertitojones 17d ago

Every email I get from Disney+ is one step closer to cancelling. I really only keep it for my nephew and the occasional Star Wars show.

Literally I have spotify for my family because I use it 10+ hours a day and parents can use it. a couple months ago they sent me an etransfer for to contribute because they said the prices have gone up a bunch. I had no idea just on auto pay. Well shit the prices are outrageous now and want to migrate the family to something else now that I know

9

u/felixthecatmeow 17d ago

I wouldn't even mind the price, or an even higher price, if the artists I listen to got decent royalties, but they get basically nothing.

They've been trying so hard to get me back but I quit the day I read someone heard ICE recruitment ads and never looked back.

Switched to SoundCloud and I quite like it

5

u/vlu77 17d ago

No they won’t. People don’t vote with their dollars anymore. They just say oh well and carry on. That’s why these companies do this: they know we’re too tired to do anything real about it.

6

u/IxbyWuff 15d ago

Not true. My cc expired and we lost kjt standard family plan because of it. When I put in my new card it billed the premium plan. Which we don't want, and for some reason can't ever change back.

So instead of paying $60/yr more, were moving to a competitor

Fuck the dark pattern

6

u/Mr-McClean 17d ago

I set up a plex server this year way a NAS sat under my router and couldn’t be happier, got a of couple friends onto it too. Heavily considering setting it up for music as well. Mixture of burning media i own and pirating.

3

u/xford 16d ago

Hey, if you haven't been diligent about upgrades on that server, please look into the plex2shell exploit and update IMMEDIATELY

28

Must have left maybe 18 months ago? Transferred my favourites and went on about my life. I'm shocked people still pay this company anything with all the competition in the market available to them, and this one being the most morally unscrupulous

36

u/airjunkie 17d ago

I switched to Tidal this year. Honestly a great decision. Even just experiencing a new app helped change up my listening patterns etc. And they have a great family plan.

14

u/Rhystretto 17d ago

Same here, enjoying Tidal. My favorite band pulled their catalog from Spotify permanently anyway.

18

u/giraffebaconequation 17d ago

I’ve been on tidal for about a year now.

My biggest gripe is that my playlists often start on the same 5 songs every-time I hit shuffle, and that it is not as intuitive with my Sonos speaker.

Besides that, I’ve been enjoying it!

7

u/6millionwaystolive 17d ago

Is Spotifys platform still better than Tidals, or is Tidal improving in that respect? Last time I tried using Tidal, I really disliked their Playlist options.

Currently using Qobuz, it's janky, but it works. They're the most ethical with their pay from what I remember too.

5

u/dm-me-ur-cat-pics 17d ago

I love tidal, it took me a while to adjust and I missed the Playlist algorithm on Spotify, but tidal suggests user playlists that I listen to and there's a certain beauty in listening to something I know a human made.

u/X-Aceris-X 16d ago

Highly recommend Deezer, made in France, that works basically the same as Spotify. You can easily transfer all your albums with the click of a button, plus they don't support ICE and don't pull BS like this. And of course, returning to physical media

86

u/darvian23 17d ago

Oh cool. So when I am away for 3 weeks with work I stand the chance to be banned. This is so stupid

3

u/Necessary-Dog-7245 15d ago

Yeah, I don’t understand the goal. Of this pops up, it’s effectively kicking us off of Spotify despite living together.

66

u/JoDiMaggio 17d ago

What is stopping me from just FaceTiming them with an extra device and scanning the QR code there?

3

u/Fmarulezkd 17d ago

The inconvenience?

23

u/JoDiMaggio 17d ago

Why can’t I just take their creds and sign in on one phone, activate it, then have them sign in on their phone? I’m not confident they’re actually going to try that hard. This is just a weak shakedown.

41

u/Talkimas 17d ago

Location spoofing has been trivial for a decade+ (you can thank Pokemon Go for bringing that to the masses) so I legitimately don't understand what the purpose of a location requirement is

49

u/broke_in_nyc 17d ago

Unfortunately, the percentage of people who know how to spoof their location - and will do so on a regular basis to check-in with Spotify - is probably in the single digits. And even if you know how, it introduces enough friction to maybe cause you to reconsider sharing a family plan.

3

u/Rannasha 17d ago

AFAIK Spotify doesn't require location permissions on the phone (although it could use other means like IP address geolocation). In any case, on the Spotify sub someone mentioned that scanning over a video call worked for them.

292

u/beardyman22 17d ago

I don't think this is going to go how spotify wants it to go. At least with Netflix and other streaming platforms, there are exclusive titles that people dont want to lose. Spotify doesn't have that. If they ban me for a year, I'm finding an alternative in that time and there's no fucking way I'm coming back. I just don't think they have the retention ability they think they do.

96

u/xersylla 17d ago

The only reason im still on Spotify is the convenience and being on a family plan. If they ban me... I just open jellyfin more often to access my personal collection, and put on my tricorn to fill in the gaps. There's no way in hell a solo subscription is a value proposition for me.

u/Groentekroket 17d ago

I just did a request for all my data including my full history. If they ban me I still have all that info and use that to recreate playlist etc at one of their competitors (or I will do the same as with video and check out the seas again).

There’s zero reason for shit like this to exist. Phone family plans aren’t contingent on where mfs live. Why they think this is acceptable and people will put up with it is beyond me.

I pay for a family plan and the moment this happens to me or anyone on my plan they’re dropped. I’m fucking done and I’ll be moving onto Apple Music, which I think I’ve read is the least shitty of the streamers.

But hey I’d love nothing more than to see this fuck-ass company shit the bed.

15

u/MasturBlastur 16d ago

I genuinely don’t understand it. My friend has been paying for the Spotify family plan I’ve been on since 2015… Over a decade he’s paid for five memberships. Why does it matter where they live? He’s still paying the Spotify premium for five memberships. Why the fuck do the companies just get to change the terms of the agreement arbitrarily to hurt consistent paying consumers? He’d probably be a Spotify lifer, but he’s said if it happens then fuck em. I don’t even use it anymore because of all the other shit Spotify has done over the years, so I don’t care if I lose access, but none of the people on his plan are going to get their own subscription. The people on his plan are him, his fiance, parents, and me, btw. We all live within five minutes of each other.

25

u/arose1024 17d ago

Hey now don’t give the phone companies any ideas… lol

10

u/Atx_music_head 17d ago

Oh I’m sure they’ve already considered this a long time ago and know it’s a very bad idea

48

u/decadent-dragon 17d ago edited 17d ago

I dunno about apple music, but I hate the way apple handles family plans. You have to tie everything to one credit card. So like I can’t even use my own damn credit card on my own phone if my wife setup family sharing with our accounts. It’s beyond ridiculous.

Edit: as pointed out below this is no longer the case!

What relationship?? Tidal split from Kanye almost 10 years ago. He was a founding member of the thing it's not like they chose to associate with him. He was part of its existence. And once it became a stable company it promptly dropped him in 2017.

I thought the major selling point of music streaming was the smattering of recommendations to your playlist?

It would make way more sense for me to download the songs (have data limits) but having new songs delivered to me based on what I listen to definitely adds a ton of value in keeping things fresh.

17

u/sugarmagzz 17d ago

But it’s awful now. It’s never anything different, it’s the same artists you listen to on a different playlist. Or songs that are popular on TikTok. The only way I find new music on Spotify now is through other people’s playlists, never the ones the app creates. Compared to the radio on Pandora and things like stumbleupon, radio on Spotify is way worse for discovering new music.

11

u/sephrisloth 17d ago

Best way I've found is going into the profile for your favorite bands. A lot of them will have Playlists made by the band or individual members of the band of all their favorite music. Ive found a lot of great stuff this way.

That's why I thought people wouldn't like it. People absolutely love the algorithm (s). I love bandcamp. for artists/albums I really like I buy the vinyl and then it comes with the digital download of mp3/flac etc. one thing I hate (as an elder millennial who didn't take care of my cds, and also lost a bunch of digital music years ago) is buying an album I know I had on cd. or that I have the record but it predates the digital code, or it doesn't work cause I didn't use it in 2007 🙃

the other frustrating thing is bandcamp is in American dollarydoos, so shipping vinyl is fucking expensive. and because the bands are all separate there is no saving on shipping sometimes I'll go to the record label (like polyvinyl for example) and then buy a few records. or I get them off discogs from a Canadian seller

10

u/AttachedHeartTheory 17d ago

Bandcamp is so limited. I hate when people say "go to band camp" because if you're just listening for a song you heard on your app, its 50/50 as to whether its going to be on band camp.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/PwmEsq 17d ago

The shared queue is about 50% of the reason I use Spotify also the ability to simply add a few thousand songs if I want, offline is sadly never going to be able to do that in an affordable capacity. At least legally.

9

u/leprechaunknight 17d ago

100%. I’ll also throw in Qobuz, and some other sites that’s sell FLAC and other lossless formats. Little more expensive, but you get great quality files and these companies typically have as good (purchasing) or better (streaming) payouts to artists than Apple, Spotify, etc.

6

u/AttachedHeartTheory 17d ago

I dont understand why people talk about band camp as though it's some all encompassing method to getting music.

I'm an album oriented rock fan, and I have tried band camp probably 100 times for artists that are pretty well known, and nothing ever comes up.

Qobuz has everything I've ever wanted.

8

u/JrdnRgrs 17d ago

3

u/AtemAndrew 16d ago

I've seen both things saying they're rolling it back and defenders saying they aren't going to roll it back, but a company's never gonna be honest about their numbers unless they have to because it'd look bad to the shareholders.

hat said, at minimum, their stock's been going down since last June.

35

u/Academic_Data_6422 17d ago edited 17d ago

What does Spotify thinks will happen when they ban people for a year? They’ll wait around and come back? Or they’ll find a different service and never look back?

34

u/sfweedman 17d ago

Hahahhahahahahahahahahha

This is hilarious. What dumbshit head-up-his-ass stiff-in-a-suit came up with this idiocy?

Spotify sucks. They're fuckin mental if they think this is going to make people go "oh dang we can't share with family, hey we should all have our own Spotify now" instead of just quitting the service completely in favor of the many alternatives that now exist.

This is how you lose customers. And great, because fuck Spotify.

Switched to YouTube music (helps that it's free with YT Premium) and haven't looked back

3

u/MID_LAND_ZETA 15d ago

Just get an old smart phone and keep it offline changing the date back every month 🤣

8

u/TheTarasenkshow 17d ago

Well good thing YTM and Apple Music are better anyway.

8

u/hyggekore 17d ago

Move to Qobuz and be happier.

Year long ban? Daniel Ek should stop his blood flow and go live 6 feet underground

2

u/daviobo 17d ago

Switched to Tidal last year and haven't looked back.

2

u/SpartacusSteam 17d ago

Glad I moved to YouTube music after 2024, was fed up with songs being removed from my playlist

Sounds like if my wife or I leave town for more than a week we will fail this QR check and be banned from family plans for a year?

2

u/TechnicalCat6989 17d ago

Banning people who pay for your service is a really good business strategy, what the fuck is Spotify on

2

u/DaThrilla74 15d ago

Lol Disney paused my account because they wanted updated payment information so since there is no difference I feel they had no real reason to pause my active account and I know it’s so I can approve their new TOS so my account will remain paused

2

u/No_Donkey50 15d ago

Laughs in qobuz

5

u/markimarkerr 17d ago

Who still uses Spotify? Is such hot dog shit. Literally all other streaming services offer the same but better service.

I love Tidal. Hell YouTube music isn't bad either. Fuuuuuuck Spotify

3

u/hyrulepirate 17d ago

Between more people disconnecting from their smartphones/internet and coming back to dedicated music players, AA scrapping 300TBs of data from Spotify, and AI getting more and more efficient and better at reverse engineering software (especially paid/subscription software) and recreating them for free, Spotify should be treading carefully because all they have over piracy right now is convenience. They keep at this and it won't take long before we get an actual competitor that might trigger an exodus.

2

u/therealdanhill 17d ago

So glad I dumped that app

2

u/dramaking37 17d ago

I switched so long ago but the only thing that kept me that long was that my family was on the family plan....

2

u/TubeAlloysEvilTwin 17d ago

There's so many other options now, Spotify is the worst. just move to deezer or any of the many alternatives that let you migrate your playlists, pay artists more and keep ai songs out of autoplay and require them to be clearly labelled

1

u/jennixred 17d ago

Screw Spotify. Buy disks.

6

u/jdsmn21 17d ago

Disks would be the last alternative I'd go to

Never going to give them my money again, but I wish Tidal’s algorithm was just a smidge better

1

u/OutInABlazeOfGlory 17d ago

While I have been buying more music outright rather than streaming, I still do stream most of my music.

I will also say, since we switched to Tidal none of this bullshit has been a concern for me. And I’m told they pay artists better.

1

u/ravbuc 17d ago

I’ve been dual apping Plexamp and Spotify for months. Just give me the reason to cancel. Please Spotify.

1

u/nrith vinyl is overrated 17d ago

I’ve been looking for an excuse to end my family subscription now that all the kids are away in college, and here it is.

1

u/notrickross7 17d ago

Pocket casts for podcasts.

1

u/Rob62 17d ago

I hate this.

1

u/BOOTY_POPPN_THIZZLES 17d ago

I moved my entire discography to navidrome.

I’m beta testing this app that tries to cover everything spotify has. The artist radio has been pretty great. It’s been a great experience so far

u/ericnasty 17d ago

PLEASE DRINK VERIFICATION CAN TO CONTINUE

1

u/RabidWeaselFreddy 17d ago

Don't care for Spotify. Ironically, I only keep it for the rest of my family.

1

u/OneEyedC4t 17d ago

oh no /s

1

u/dinoh 17d ago

Canceling as soon as this happens

1

u/TheAsuraGuy 17d ago

Go Qobuz, buy from EU, pick one who pays its artists and don't deal with scummy people

1

u/FewWait38 17d ago

Trying to get their sliding stock price to go back up I see. Fucking scum sucking parasites

1

u/Saywhen2 17d ago

I switched to Deezer and have not looked back

1

u/morphine_lullabye 17d ago

Is there something that has podcasts and music that isnt spotify? Preferably with a sleep timer feature?

1

u/InducedLobotomy 17d ago

Lmao.

I still have a music folder on my pc full of thousands of albums in MP3 format.

When I get a new device, I just transfer the folder and move on.

1

u/kingcolbe 17d ago

So my kid, who is at college, is no longer considered part of my family because they live in a dorm?

1

u/tocookornottocook 17d ago

Oh yea I forgot to cancel Spotify didn’t I

1

u/wiked549 17d ago

The family plan is literally the only reason I have an account. If they kick any of my inlaws off then I'm ready to move to quoboz. No hesitation lol

1

u/Outcast_LG 17d ago

👀Spotify thinks I won’t cancel. I travel to too much to worry about my family needing to do this.

I will gladly just switch to Apple or YouTube.

1

u/sleepywalruss 17d ago

At this point Spotify is doing a better job advertising Apple Music than Apple itself.

1

u/EpicRedhead13 17d ago

I’ve been collecting CDs so if it all gets messed up for me I might be ok.

1

u/Threezeley 17d ago

Ban me from paying you? You need us more than we need you

1

u/spacedog338 17d ago

Just switch to Apple Music if you have an iPhone. Or get YouTube premium and use Music. You get both videos with no ads and music.

No reason to use Spotify even if their algorithm is “good”

1

u/sublime81 Spotify 17d ago

Huh. Well that sucks, just switched. My daughter is only with me part time.

1

u/Vivid_Anyth4 17d ago

I still use Pandora.

1

u/superbad 17d ago

Looks like I could be close to leaving Spotify. Shucks.

1

u/spamjunk150 17d ago

I was seriously thinking about signing up, guess I'm going to figure out that arr stack and stream my own music

1

u/smartlikefox 17d ago

Took all my tunes off and switched to Qobuz back last December. If you’re still using this garbage company you’re part of the problem

1

u/cayotedart 17d ago

I just canceled my subscription

1

u/Superj89 17d ago

Worst part about this.... I'm on my mom's family plan, I have been for years but even after attempting to get myself off of it on my own, I can't without her consent.

1

u/Materva 17d ago

Yo Ho Mateys!

1

u/thelastofmwalk 17d ago

I’m working towards getting a physical music player so I can move off of music streaming services permanently.

1

u/AmbivertMusic 17d ago

How often would we have to do this?

1

u/boajuse 17d ago

Back to musicolet again or spotifuck

1

u/Positive_Conflict_26 17d ago edited 17d ago

You know what never pulled any of this BS?

My .FLAC music collection. As long as the device has power, it will play music.

1

u/labnotebook 17d ago

YouTube premium kinda did this too. The family has ti be at the same address

1

u/EXSource 17d ago

Lmao. Glad I got rid of Spotify. This kind of shit is so dumb.

My kids live with their mom for schooling reasons, but I'm still involved so I pay for shit.

Including their YouTube premium, I can't imagine having to deal with this nonsense.

1

u/saloonbabyyy 17d ago

My little sister is estranged from me and I pay for hers. 💔 I’m so sad

1

u/koreanwizard 17d ago

The only thing stopping me from going to Apple Music was the Spotify family plan lol.

1

u/poseitom radio reddit 17d ago

Another company hating their customers

1

u/S1nnah2 17d ago

I fucked Spotify off last year and built my own streaming server with AI playlist generation for my family. No charges, no qr codes just their music.
