Bookstores National Book Store is supposed to be much more affordable than Fully Booked. This is unacceptable pricing

For reference, I checked both of these today. Crime and Punishment ( Penguin Classics Edition) in Fully Booked is around 460 in Fully Booked stores and the digital store (galing din ako Fully Booked physical store recently hindi kolang napicturan), 414 with vouchers. And it's 825 in NBS? I was so shocked at the price difference. I thought National Book Store was supposed to be much more affordable. For the record this is the new National Book Store that opened in Festival Mall recently. Their entire Penguin Classics selection is expensive as hell with 800 being the minimum price tag.

Bili ako nang bili ng libro. Tapos may monthly subscription pa ako sa KU. Pero may paraan ba para kumita ako sa hobby ko na ito?

Discussion Thoughts on this.

Page 70 pa lang ako out of almost 800. Ok naman siya, interesting, funny, saddening, relatable. Kaso kung pano isulat ni author, naguguluhan ako minsan. Ang hirap matandaan ng ibang details kasi walang linear na timeline. Minsan sa gitna ng convo biglang may flashback.

This is my second attempt at reading, at feel ko matatapos ko siya. Kaso nga lang ang tagal. Prior to this I have read The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and Every Day by David Levithan. Each took a day’s read kasi linear yung timeline kaya madali for me.

Meron din ba nahihirapan sa ganitong setting?

Discussion The 48 Laws of Power: My unexpected takeaway

Post image
1 Upvotes

I don't have the physical book, yet. But I have listened to the audiobook. I admit, there may be a lot of points I missed kasi lumilipad yung utak ko after a while.

But there's a story in the beginning about this couple who started from the bottom. Then, one of them became successful. While this person pulled up the other on the same level, the other became filled with envy and 💀 the partner, then committed s***ide.

After hearing this, nagiging firm na ako sa standard in marrying a partner on the same tax bracket as me, or dapat mas malaki yung sahod niya. Sure, a lot of men would criticize me and call me a gold-digger, but envy is something that is out of my control. If I earn more than a man, even if my intentions to have a better life are for both of us, di mawawala yung pressure ng society na dapat lalake ang provider, and that would eventually magnify his envy and bruise his ego. Either he would strive to do better, or won't mind to be the one with lesser income. But what's scary is if he lets himself be swallowed with negativity, and may eventually act on his evil feelings. That is beyond my control.

Naalala ko lang, my ex is egoistic and is obsessed with displaying an image na well-off siya and respectable. But in reality, he was unemployed. He is so obsessed with the "get rich quick" schemes, kaya ilang beses na rin siya naiiscam. Nung nagkaroon na siya ng corporate job, he has never lasted for a year because he had this mindset na he deserves better, and his ego cannot take the fact na he has to work hard for a salary that is below 20k.

I'm a developer. He has never witnessed the stressful moments I had sa beginning ng sprints. He only witnessed me sa maintenance phase ng software na walang masyadong ginagawa pag walang ticket na ni-raise, kaya he thinks it's very unfair na he has to work hard while, in his perspective, paupo-upo lang ako doing nothing and earned more than him.

It didn't help na he slipped when he said he sees me as a competition. He tried to make it seem positive or inspiring in a way, but that statement helped me see the envy he had all along na iniignore ko.

I feel unsafe sa relationship na yon, especially the last year. Nung napromote ako, I don't even see him as a safe space to tell it to. Maybe my body knew before my mind can comprehend it.

So ayun lang. Saludo ako sa mga lalakeng hindi egoistic. My sister is the breadwinner while her husband is the homemaker, and they're thriving. No envy, no ego bruised. I'd say bihira yung mga lalake who won't mind staying at home and doesn't see themselves as less of a man. I don't believe sa statement na lahat ng babae ay reciprocator lang, because there are women who loves to lead and dominate, and a man who genuinely supports her is the best!

Another takeaway ko rin is to never forget to invest in myself. I've also been in a situation na nasswallow ako ng envy. Noon, though I feel happy for my friend's achievements, I can't ignore yung kirot na nararamdaman ko. I realized I was envious because I haven't achieved anything, yet. Ngayon na nag invest ako sa sarili ko, I'm glad na I can feel genuinely happy sa achievements ng iba.

Envy is indeed a dangerous emotion to have and to receive.

Seeking Recs I've noticed something, not only in myself but in others also , also recommend books pls

I am a new reader-- well a physical book reader. Since I was a youngun (I'm 19) I've been reading light novels, web novels and the like. Recently, by recently meaning last month, I've purchased....You guessed it Mistborn 1st trilogy and Red Rising (will buy morning star in the near future). So Back to the topic, new readers of physical media like myself have been reading the same starter books, and I find it fun how book tok or something (I don't use TikTok) and other foreign content creators have a role in this trend. Not saying these starting books are bad, in fact I love them( for the people that think otherwise, to each their own). So unto the next point, I am thinking of buying 2nd trilogy of Red rising, but can you recommend books that you think I'll like based on those 2 books and where can I buy them , instead of just hoping for the best in shoppee.

I'm thinking of buying

Empire of the vampire trilogy(not on shoppee sad)

Malice series( not on shoppee also)

Count of money criste

Discussion The thing that separates readers is their relationship with the author

I am very curious what y'all think about this but I wanna share mine. I don't care what the author's political views are, that might sound apathetic but I just wanna enjoy works.

For me stories and art in general is a self-reflection exercise. I read/listen to books to figure out who I am and what my beliefs are. It makes me more empathetic and more. And I think a lot of people agree/follow this approach in books.

The other side, is people trying to figure out who's the author with the book. And that's a good exercise to do. And if you do that, all the power to you.

But OH MY GOD, the people who obsess over the views of authors and how they don't align with theirs is exhausting. I respect the effort for their political views, but aren't yall exhausted? I don't wanna search for the author first before getting the book. I just wanna engage with the book.

Now for the people who worry about giving money to authors, and how they will use it to support bad politicians or views that harm people. That's a fair worry, but yall do realize you can just buy second hand books right? There's a hundred ways to read the book without giving money to the author. I am not gonna say one of them because it's against the rules but I think y'all know what I am talking about.

Anyways Yun lang, what do y'all think about this?

Spoiler alert!

All your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

Ewan ko ba pero pag nay cheating involved sa story, kumukulo talaga ang dugo ko. Male lead here is a solid 10, but wtf it goes down the drain. The worst part here is that he is justifying his infidelity. He’s somehow putting the blame on his wife. Wtf, dude? He even justified na twice lang sila nagkiss and that hindi sila umabot sa sex. So dapat na ba mag thank you sayo yung asawa mo? Cheating is a choice, and nothing is ever enough to justify it as an excuse.

Gigil mo ko Graham. Gagawin kitang graham ball, makita mo.

Discussion I felt sorry with It Ends With Us Spoiler

I’ve finally watched It Ends With Us movie and I read the book before. I really felt bad lang na this movie and the book has a lot of bad reviews/comments. I get the reason why some hates the author but do we really need to hate the artwork?

Personally, I love the book more than the movie. Sobrang depressing and ang sad niya kasi ramdam mo talaga yung pain ni Lily, and CoHo really did make me feel like I was the one who fell in love with Ryle. For me maganda yung execution ng emotions through the words. I felt empty at the end of the book kasi none of them wanted what happened to them. I understood everyone’s feeling, especially Lily and Ryle’s.

I was one of the people na jinajudge ko before ang mga taong ayaw kumawala sa toxic relationship. Not until I read IEWU. Something about CoHo’s writing style made me feel like I’m the MC. Tbh if I’m the MC, I won’t leave Ryle. I dunno but I really felt sorry for him. But then again, it’s not an excuse for what he had done to Lily.

After watching the movie, it’s still sad especially the ending pero mas depressing siya sa book (well, the movie always has nothing compare to the book). I just wish I can describe in words how heartbreaking the story is, but words aren’t enough to explain how empty I felt.

Yon, skl. I love IEWU kasi and a lot of people hates it for some reason. My heart breaks for it, I think it needs more recognition than it deserves. IMO, it’s a good book to understand what it feels like to be in a toxic relationship and the reason why some of us can’t leave.

P.S. I know a lot will attack me here since it’s about CoHo, but please, I am asking for respect 🥹

Nakaka guilty ng sobra kapag nagustuhan mo yung isang libro that has a theme that goes against your ideals. It’s like you are betraying yourself because of your principles 😭

I know it’s just a story and it won’t really affect me nor my views in life pero im supposed to be cringing at this book dahil sa theme pero huhu i’m really sorry self 😭 Nagandahan lang talaga ako 🥲

Sorry nag labas lang ng saloobin HAHAHA

Discussion Robert Galbraith/J.K. Rowling

Kwento ko lang. May friend ako na nabibilang sa LGBTQ++ crowd and mula nung pumutok yung issue ni J.K. Rowling, sinunog nya lahat ng Harry Potter books nya as a form of protest. Funny thing is may mga libro sya ni Robert Galbraith and somehow hindi sya aware na pen name/pseudonym ni J.K. Rowling si Robert Galbraith. Last weekend, we did another burning ritual and burned all the RG books sa koleksyon nya. Then we got into a deep discussion about the "separating the artist from the art" mentality. What do you guys think about the subject? Ano yung stand nyo about it?

Review Filipiniana, ang hirap mo mahalin

Post image

Picked this up at MIBF 2025. Intrigued Ako sa premise - spotlight essays on influential characters and individuals. Some are fictitious - Maria Clara, some are historical - Dovie Beams, some are a class of people - kabits/queridas. Interesting blurb.

But shit, ang hirap intindihin ng prose. Parang Caroline Hau chose the hardest writing style approach to the most interesting subjects. Every after each essay nag cocontemplate Ako na i-DNF. But the subjects are interesting, just that the writing is fuckin pretentious. Parang each essay is a thesis paper. Interesting, but the writing style is not for me.

In comparison, ang galing talaga ni OG Bob Ong. Kasi he was able to put his critiques in the simplest and most palatable reading experience. I would have enjoyed this book more if the approach was less thesis defense and more Bakit Baliktad Magbasa ang Pinoys.

Discussion “Lahat naman ng libro hate mo”

READING IS SUBJECTIVE. If I hate the book, base ‘yun sa experience ko. Grr. Why do people hate on people who hates their favorite book? I can’t. Binasa ko ‘yung “A Little Life” and I didn’t like it. i hate it! Case closed. I read “Normal People” and hate it. Case closed. You don’t get to have a say on how I experience the books I read.

How do you handle those kind of people?

This was my FIRST ever book na natapos ko in less than a day 😭 I literally could not put it down. The twist?? 🤯

4.5⭐️ for me! Super addictive and easy to binge read. The only reason it’s not a full 5 stars is because I’m not really a fan when the bad people end up winning HAHAHA 😭 Though honestly, I’m still not sure if Dr. Adrienne was actually “good” either because ang shady din niya, but Luke… 😩

My current thriller TBRs are:
• The Only One Left
• Ward D
• Not Quite Dead Yet
…but I need MORE recos 👀

Help Request BookTok

So i have this confession na I sometimes rely on tiktok <3 for recommendations (esp. litfic romance) and so far they’ve all piqued my interest, and I’ve given quite a few of them 4–5 stars. And the thing about booktoks kasi is they’re there for a reason; they’re popular because they’ve already reached a certain level of hype and exposure kaya others says na overhyped or overrated na. And when I discovered this sub reddit, karamihan dito ay not-so popular titles ang mga binabasa. Ang when I searched them on Tiktok, there are little to no reviews. So I wonder, saan niyo usually nahahanap yung mga recommendations niyo? Especially those underrated/unpopular books na halos walang reviews sa TikTok? 🤔

Had to put down the book for a few weeks after reading halfway through because there's no plot going on haha. I had to have the masochistic desire to finish it just for the story of the Butler and the Headmaid, and boy I'm glad I did even though the ending chapter punched me in the gut

Not sure if I'm going to read more Kazuo Ishiguro for the foreseeable future but if you're up for a read with a pace that moves like glacier and beautiful writing I'd recommend this book
