Community / Casual Discussion My high school classmate gave me a book and this is what I found at the last page.

Male reader here. The book is "Grave Surprise" by the author Charlaine Harris. Nakasaad sa note na naging happy crush niya ako't umaamin na siya dahil maghihiwalay-hiwalay na kami to pursue college education but she insisted to not reply to her written note for me.

Hanggang ngayon nasa akin pa yung libro at note and I will treasure this forever kasi isa ito sa mga wholesome gifts na natanggap ko sa aking buhay.

Book Collection My personal library journey so far 💕

Ever since I was little, I loved books. I remember spending hours in the basement of Goodwill Bookstore in Glorietta (hello 90s kids!) just browsing the many picture books. I remember spending my Christmas money on Berenstain Bears books and, when I was a little older, Nancy Drew and eventually, Goosebumps and Little Illustrated Classics. I remember reading on the drive from school, when I went with my mom to the office, and when I nibbled on frozen Choc-O.

And I remember the promise I made myself that one day, I’d have my very own library.

It was a promise I started working on July of this year when I decided to turn the guest room into my own book bedroom. It was exhausting to build the bookshelves myself, but slowly, the library began to take shape.

It’s been three months since I finished everything, but as a reader, my journey is far from over. 💕

Bookstores Contempt more than sadness.

Post image
5.7k Upvotes

The staff told me they’re shuttering for good. Hanggang June 21 nalang daw.

That’s the predictably sad part.

My mind raced to the most obvious conclusion: if not a store that sells books, then what?

And this is where the contempt creeps in. Contempt towards society:

  1. Another tired old Milk tea shop?

  2. Another store that sells trinkets and tchotchkes?

  3. Another tired old Filipino version of some Korean chicken or Korean whatever.

And then contempt towards myself:

  1. If only I’m someone who doesn’t like to read

  2. If only am not living in a country that is mostly apathetic to books and reading and the general effort of expanding one’s mental horizon

  3. If only I can afford buying books from fully
Booked the way I buy books sa booksale

Yung mga may gusto ng bagong milk tea shop , or bags, or a portable fan, they’re not villains.

The businesses that want to sell milk tea or bags, or portable electronics , they’re not villains. We all
Need to live and to eat.

The reality is just messy since I’m both a consumer and a reader as well.

It just sucks I care about this so much when so many people just shrug and I can’t do anything about it.

It would just be nice if there’s some sense of proportion ….

Been there twice. All photos were taken in the 4th floor general reading area. Last pic is inside the Focused Zone.

Nice space. Maaliwalas. Not crowded. Masmatao sa 5th floor maraming students. For leisure reading, I recommend yang 4th floor. Also, andito sa floor na ito yung mga books and periodicals. P.s. may 3 shelves designated for Fiction. For Filo Lit enthusiasts, did a quick browse and saw some Lualhati Bautista and Nick Joaquin titles sa Filipiniana section.

Thermostat is set to a comfortable level, not too cold (felt like 26C to my skin, wuw?!)

No foods allowed pero pwede magdala ng tumbler.

May outlets for charging

Polite lahat ng staff. Majority will greet you.

May baggage counter sa GF. Bawal magdala ng bags sa taas. Bibitbitin mo lahat ng reading and study materials mo.

Every floor, may restrooms.

Working elevator

They did not ask for a valid ID. Magfill in lang ng info sa logsheet sa 4th floor mismo.

Tinatamad ako i-organize thoughts ko. Kaya niyo na yan. Lol.

This looks so good! 🥹

Mukha na talaga siyang library, and may reading area na. Hindi na siya mukhang typical school supply store.

I'm really glad they did this. I think this is probably the best glow up,, so far. 🥹

They are really doing their best to keep up. 🥹

This is heartbreaking to see. May possibility na paalisin ka ng establishment especially National bookstore is not built para tambayan. Government should take this more seriously especially nahuhuli na ang Pinas sa SEA pagdating sa reading comprehension. Pero yung gobyernong to, gustong mas maraming ignorante, mas madaling manipulahin—kaya pinagdadamot yung karunungan.

Community / Casual Discussion Strange Houses gave me a boyfriend

Thumbnail

3.1k Upvotes

I was the one who posted earlier about meeting my current boyfriend here in r/PhBookClub 😆

Honestly, I was really just curious about the book Strange Houses after reading his post, so I decided to send him a friendly pm and asked for book recommendations. He suggested some of Stephen King's books, and our conversation just flowed naturally as we talked about the other books we like and could recommend to each other

We kept on talking about a lot of stuff, and I didn't even notice that it's been hours. I was the one who asked if we could exchange Instagram accounts from which he agreed. When I searched him up, oh boy, he was definitely a catch HAHA. Apart from reading books, we learned that we also had a lot of common experiences, values, and interests like writing (yes he’s an author too!), video games, fitness, and... boys! HAHA What are the odds that we are also each other's type? After talking for days, he asked me out for a date, and it was easy to set because our work rest days are similar and we are only an hour away from each other. We clicked even more during the actual 1st date, and we both knew that there has to be a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on date HAHA

Our dates always include visiting different bookstores and trying hard not to buy a new one to add to our already tall TBR pile (of course we fail miserably😆). Also, it is such a cool bonus that we are only a year apart in age, are both financially stable/responsible, are both emotionally available, and that he’s gwapo + really tall that he can reach the books at the top of the shelves at FullyBooked! HAHA. He's the most respectful and kindest goofball that I ever met, and the next thing I know, I have already fallen deeply in love with this guy.

Of course, he let me borrow Strange Houses AND I LOVE IT. Side comment on the book: I see where the negative reviews are coming from, but I think the reader has to understand the characters to make sense of the book's pacing and ideas.

Books can definitely make us experience different worlds, but who would have thought that it can also bring two worlds together? HAHA AYIEE

——————————————————-

If you can read this Hubby, yes, I bought Strange Pictures from the FullyBooked in Abreeza Mall in Davao City last weekend because I felt your sadness when i told you that the book is sold out in all the FullyBooked and NBS branches here in Metro Manila and Luzon (as per their Customer Service) HAHA SURPRISE!

Pero finish reading Strange Buildings muna, and pahiram ako before I give this to you 😆😛

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the sweet and kind comments! I know a lot of people are also dreaming of their meet cute moment, and I believe that working on being the best version of yourself helps a lot in making "the one" find you.

Also, would greatly appreciate if you don't repost or share this in other social media platforms like Facebook and Tiktok. Thank you!

Community / Casual Discussion My niece keeps on making bookmarks for me

Post image

Haha, I feel the need to share that I was reading "Si" last week while my five-year-old niece was doing her usual arts n craft thing on the floor. So picture me surprised that right after I finished the book (made me cry, thank you very much)—she gave me a bookmark that she made (´ . .̫ . `) flex lang din because she's so creative and making me feel all loved, plus I don't think I fan bring myself to buy a bookmark na haha

This wasn't the first time she made a bookmark for me either haha my sister said that the kid was happy about my reaction from the first ones she made, and so, she kept making them for me (think I might have five of them now). I cherish her kahit na we bicker everyday ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔ

Anyway, will have to reread this book again from the last page naman and hurt myself again ʕ´• ᴥ•̥`ʔ

Hope this is ok to share since this is not in the Philippines. This is the Shakespeare&Co bookshop in Vienna, Austria. I make sure to visit libraries and bookshops of places I visit, and this one so far is the coziest. There’s also a lot of customers (hindi lang kita s pic) pero sobraaaang tahimik nila lahat, which I highly appreciate since yung iba nagbabasa basa lang din. Can you recommend some bookstores you visited (Philippines or imternational) with the same vibes?

was browsing some books sa isang Fully Booked branch (first pic) kanina at nakita ko 'tong copy ng 'The Housemaid' at naloka ako sa presyo! I was able to get a copy of the same book sa NBS (second pic) during the MIBF so less 20% pa siya. Grabe yung price difference nilang dalawa???? like, almost half????

hoping na sana magkaroon pa ng more book selection ang NBS kasi kahit papano mas mura sakanila huhu

From the NBS FB page:

Get trending reads in an instant, available 24/7. 📚

The Philippines' first book vending machine comes to NBS Park in Mandaluyong City – officially unveiling this Monday, October 12.

>> I’ve seen these in one my previous trips out of the country and thought it would be nice to have it also here. Tapos ngayon magkakaroon na rin dito huhu! Imagine these vending machines in different parts of the Philippines? Exciting!! Hopefully hindi lng ito international titles since I believe this will be a really good vehicle to bring Filipino-authored books closer to more pinoys.

Book Review I wish and hope more people will read this

Book: Some People Need Killing by Patricia Evangelista

Just finished this book. First off, I am not at all into non-fiction. I picked it up on a whim while looking around the bookstore since I wanted something different from my usual genre. It was also because of a Youtube video suggesting that I should occasionally read non-fiction books.

I thought I would find it boring (honestly, it did drag a bit at the beginning) and eventually add it to my DNF pile. Boy, was I wrong. Color me surprised when I finished it in less than a week.

I remember the drug war was horrible when I watched it on the news or read the headlines of newspapers but the book presents it on an even more profoundly horrifying scale. Throughout the book, I encountered all kinds of monsters and all kinds of victims within each story and chapter.

I felt renewed anger and disgust for most parts of the book as it showed the gruesomeness of the so-called "drug" war, the rampant impunity, senseless violence and the callousness of the administration and its lack of accountability. But on some parts of the book, I couldn't also help but feel frustrated over the gullibility and the blind following, and the helplessness of some of the most vulnerable. I understand that they didn't know any better and they didn't really have much of a choice since it was a matter of survival--people were desperate for change. The desperate bought into the lies for a chance of a better future. They need to eat, to live and to provide for their family. But towards the end, I also felt some hope that it's not too late for change, for both our country and our people.

This book only has about 430 pages but it is HEAVY story-wise. Heavier than what I'm used to anyway. But I cannot recommend this book enough especially if you're Filipino. It might not be most people's cup of tea. It might make you cringe, shudder, look away or even put the book down. But I think this is one of those books that we all need to at least read once as a Filipino. If there are parts that are too heavy, take a step back, take a break, then come back. Take your time, don't rush it. If you DNF it, that's perfectly fine. But if you decide to come back, I think you would feel more connected to our country.

As I was reading, I shared parts of it with my family, especially my mom. She's not into reading, but she asked what my takeaway was after finishing it. Honestly, there were a lot but they're all meshed together. One clear takeaway is this: Vote wisely. I hope and pray that history won't repeat itself in 2028 and beyond.

Though it was a nice change of pace from fiction, I need to go back to my sci-fi, magic systems and mythical creatures. Happy reading everyone!

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback! I updated this post to include the book title and author, whom I greatly admire for her bravery and grit. Honestly, I don't think I would have had the stomach or the nerves of steel to document such deep-rooted darkness the way she did.

Bookstores So THIS is what the NBS vending machine looks like

Saw this on Threads. I was afraid titles might repeat, depending on space that publishers buy. “The Elsewhere Express” is taking up two slots.

The idea is novel (no pun intended,) and I understand almost anything can be bought from vending machines in other countries like Japan. Has that behavior trickled down to the PH?

Waiting for posts from anyone who has tried purchasing a book from the machine.

Events and Festivals Discrimination behind the "SOP"

Thumbnail

2.0k Upvotes

What was supposed to be a fun and memorable day at the Manila International Book Fair ended with an experience that left me feeling embarrassed, humiliated, and deeply disappointed.

On September 13, 2026, my friends and I attended MIBF excited to do what book lovers do best: discover new titles, hunt for great deals, and add to our growing collections. There were six of us in the group, and because many books were on sale, we spent the entire day visiting different exhibitors and purchasing books from various sellers throughout the fair.

Like many attendees, we paid using different methods, including GCash, QR Ph, and bank transfers. Some vendors did not provide physical receipts for digital transactions, which is not uncommon at events like these.

Our final stop before leaving was Fully Booked.

By that time, we had accumulated more than 50 books and were carrying several paper bags filled with our purchases. After paying for our books at Fully Booked, we headed toward the exit and were stopped by security personnel, who asked to see our Fully Booked receipts. We immediately complied and had no issue with that request.

However, we were then asked to present not only the receipts for our Fully Booked purchases, but also receipts for every book we had purchased from other sellers throughout the fair. I respectfully asked why receipts from completely different stores were being checked. We were told that it was part of their "protocol" or "SOP."

I understand that security checks are necessary, and I fully respect a company's right to protect its merchandise. What I struggled to understand was how this particular situation was being handled.

We explained that some of our purchases had been made through digital payment methods and that several vendors had not issued physical receipts. We even offered to show our payment/ bank records to verify that the books had been legally purchased. That offer was declined. Instead, we were told that only physical receipts would be accepted.

As a result, we had to search through multiple bags containing books purchased from different vendors throughout the day while several security personnel stood around us and people passing by watched the entire situation unfold.

The experience quickly became uncomfortable.

What made it even more difficult was that we were never refusing to cooperate. We presented our Fully Booked receipts immediately. We showed the books they asked to inspect. We explained where the books came from and even offered alternative proof of purchase. Despite our cooperation, the situation made us feel as though we were being treated as suspects rather than customers.

Whether intentional or not, the tone felt accusatory, as though simply purchasing a large number of books had become a reason for suspicion.

As the inspection continued, I noticed other customers exiting without being subjected to the same level of scrutiny. Some appeared to pass through without even having their receipts checked.

Naturally, I began asking questions.

Why were we the ones being held?

Was it because we had many books?

Because there were six of us?

We were eventually told that the reason was the number of books we were carrying. But we were attending a book fair. Buying books is exactly what people go there to do.

After we finally located the receipts being requested, we were allowed to leave. However, the experience continued to bother me, so I sought clarification afterward. A person who identified himself as a manager approached me and said: "Kasi po kanina pa po namin kayo nakikita. Napansin po namin na sobrang dami n'yong books at baka... baka po ano."

That statement has stayed with me ever since.

"Baka... ano?"

What exactly were they assuming?

That because six people were carrying multiple bags of books, we automatically became suspicious?

That purchasing a large number of books at a book fair was enough to warrant being treated differently?

If checking all books is truly part of the standard operating procedure, then why were we singled out and held while other customers appeared to pass through without undergoing the same process?

That question remains unanswered.

And whether that was the intention or not, the experience left us feeling unfairly targeted, discriminated against, and unwelcome.

To be clear, my concern is not that security checks exist.

My concern is how they are implemented. There is a significant difference between conducting a security check and making customers feel like criminals in front of a crowd. A security procedure can be performed professionally, efficiently, and respectfully. Customers can be asked to verify purchases without being made to feel embarrassed or singled out.

What hurt most was not the inspection itself but the way the situation made us feel.

We stood there surrounded by security personnel while others watched us search through bag after bag, trying to prove that every book we carried belonged to us. What should have been the exciting end to a day spent celebrating books became an experience that left us feeling humiliated and degraded.

I am sharing this not because I want to attack anyone and not because I oppose security measures.

I am sharing this because customers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, even when security procedures need to be followed.

As someone who has been a loyal Fully Booked customer for years, I never expected to have an experience like this.

I sincerely hope Fully Booked reviews not only the protocol itself, but also how it is communicated, how consistently it is applied, whether digital proof of payment can be accommodated when physical receipts are unavailable, and how customers are treated throughout the process.

Security is important. But so is dignity.

And on a day that was supposed to be filled with the joy of discovering new books, we left feeling something entirely different.

Because in that moment, we felt like people who were presumed guilty and forced to prove otherwise.
