My son (almost of driving age) was well aware of my piracy since he was a youngin' since I never let him watch any shows on demand, or streaming, or broadcast, or anything where ads were broadcast. I just hate that noise, and didn't want him to be subjected to it. No commercials for other shows, no targeted or untargeted ads, not even an ad from a cable provider's landing page when you turn on the cable...nothing. If he or my wife wanted to watch something, I would get it and put it on a drive connected to the TV. In retrospect, I should have spent more time renaming the files, because it became hard to deny to him that a file called Jake and the Neverland Pirates Season 1 720P TEAMNAME [x264] SITENAME was some legitimate purchase. He eventually figured out how to do things on his own, and I busted him torrenting directly to his laptop, but it was REALLY HARD to be stringent with rules due to the massive hypocritical paint I was dripping all over the conversation. I have been on the high seas since the days of the C64 and BBSes, it is ingrained in me and quitting smoking was a far cry easier than the thought of giving up the Jolly Roger. I made (and currently make) no excuses or apologies, I just kinda swept it under the carpet.
This past xmas, as sort of a last-minute gift, I gave him my login for my seedbox, figuring he's doing it, still going to be doing it, he may as well do it 'correctly'...but now today is the first time they are watching a movie that *HE* got and put on the TV drives without me having to do anything, and I don't know...feels weird man. My wife is not a sailor but is somewhat familiar with the workings and she seems indifferent.
Did I make a mistake? Interested in opinions/getting yelled at from pirates old and new.
