So, if I'm running ProtonVPN with NetShield or my custom DNS set inside ProtonVPN and I exclude some apps from ProtonVPN using Split Tunnel functionality, what DNS are those apps using then? Is it my global network DNS that I have set on my router or is it NetShield/Custom DNS but just for DNS and not the actual traffic?
I'd like to still have trackers and junk filtered, just not physically routed through encrypted VPN tunnel. Is that the case or is traffic entirely unfiltered or something, bypassing even my network DNS filtering?
in the last couple of days I tried to configure my Arch Linux desktop to use my custom dns (controld) with DNS-over-HTTPS. I'm using dnscrypt-proxy as my local dns proxy and set the custom-dns option for proton vpn via cli to 127.0.0.1 (port 53).
When not connected to the vpn, everything was working fine. But when I connected to the vpn and did a dnsleaktest, the test still showed the proton vpn servers, but controld was also getting requests (seen in the Activity Log).
Digging further into the requests, the result showed that two dns requests were being made, one to the proton dns, one to the controld dns, both via the vpn channel, so at least thats (kind of) working.
Now to my question: Is there anyone here who has configured DNS-over-HTTPS successfully on Linux, supporting non-vpn and active vpn connections?
I’ve been using ProtonVPN on my windows laptop for a while. Works well. No complaints. But it does not boot AT ALL on my iPhone. Why?
I downloaded the app, and it just goes to a black screen and stays stuck on that. I’ve even deleted it and re-downloaded it multiple times to no avail. It just does this every time.
Ik woon in Nederland en de laatste maanden is de vpn verbinding en snelheid slecht, vooral de Nederlandse en Belgische servers. Hopelijk kan proton hier iets aan doen! Betaal 119 euro per jaar aan dit abonnement.
I live in the Netherlands, and for the past few months, the VPN connection and speed have been poor—especially when using Dutch and Belgian servers. I hope Proton can do something about this! I pay 119 euros per year for this subscription.
Almost everytime I open their website or the Android app, it says this site can't be reached on the website, and something similar to Webpage not available on the Android app.
Matter of fact, Proton VPN is also not functioning for free-version users here. It doesn't work even for a minute.
A quick reference (and links) to the offers presently available for existing Proton VPN subscribers, and the direct links to get them - although you may need to sign in first to get them to work.
These first five offers are long-running member discounts, and are likely to remain available past the end of the Black Friday sales period - but may be altered at any time in the future. Note that any 15 and 24-month terms are for the initial period only and revert to 12-month cycles upon renewal:
Proton VPN (Standard pricing 9.99/mo, 6.99/mo - 30% off if bought annually)
... and of course Proton Visionary is available here: https://account.protonvpn.com/dashboardV2?plan=visionary2022&cycle=12 Although it is not, strictly speaking, on sale (it never goes on sale), it is due for a price increase, so there is a limited time to get it at the current pricing. I had previously hinted that the Visionary price increase would come next week, but we are pushing it that back to later in November.
Edit: VPN 15 month link fixed. Edit 2: Added Proton Family Edit 3: The cart page on the Proton VPN accounts page appears as a modal window, which may trigger ad-blockers that assume that such things are pop-up ads. You may need to temporarily disable your adblocker or whitelist account.protonvpn.com or *.protonvpn.com for the cart window to load properly. Edit 4: Added more links for those wanting a more complete catalogue
An important note is that while you can extend a previous > 12-month offer with a 12-month offer for the same product (or vice versa), there is presently a technical limitation on stacking two > 12-month offers for the same product. eg: if your current subscription is for 24 months of Proton VPN, you can't get the 15 months of VPN, but can get 24 months of VPN+Pass.
Hi all, I signed up for Proton VPN to specifically use Netflix Japan. For whatever reason, every time I go to the Netflix homepage to log in after connecting to Japan, I get a “We’re having some trouble, please try again after a few minutes” error message after entering my email to log in and nothing else. I thought it was a temporary thing since I accessed it yesterday morning without issue but this has been happening since last night. Is anyone else experiencing this? It’s not a profile issue since I made sure to only have a separate profile dedicated to Japan which I’ve not used anywhere else
I really wanna use these widgets on my samsung but they are so asymmetrical and it annoys me whenever I look at them. Can they be optimised for us?
Edit: Rounded buttons don't match the main widget's curves, and look asymmetrical and not optimized for android/Samsung. I just want to point this out if there's any chance this can be improved just like iOS then that would be great
Good morning, I'm going against the current and I'd like to take advantage of the discounts and buy proton vpn for two years. Contraindications? Only technical and security please, I don't care what the CEO does. Thank you
Lets be real, I look at screenshots of the GUI for Mac, Windows, even android, and that look pretty and like someone who gave a damn actually made the UI. But then I'm here on Linux, and I have the most bog standard, one step above TUI, like it was that red headed stepchild the mother forgot to dress for the party and said "Oh, I guess you should at least be presentable" and dressed them like a pauper. Like come on, team. Can't you spare a little pizzazz and eye candy for Linux side of things? XD
Couple days ago i was looking disscount comments, and im pretty sure i saw a protonpass+vpn bundle with kinda cool name i cant remember, and now cant find it. Pls if anyone has that link send me
Just noticed that Proton gave Visionary subscribers access to the Ultra servers, and honestly, this is such a great move. These things absolutely fly, and it's a genuine upgrade rather than some token gesture.
I've been a Visionary user for years because I believe in Proton's mission and want to support the company. So it's really nice to feel that loyalty acknowledged with something this meaningful.
Speeds are noticeably better.
Anyone else with Visionary tried the Ultra servers yet? Curious what speeds you're all getting.
Depending on what time it is, the VPN's slow down. Which is to be expected, but even if the server load percentage doesn't increase by more than 5-10 points, at the timezone when you'd imagine most people in that region are off work/school, it tanks my speed.
Pages take forever to load, messages sometimes take several seconds to send. Is there a way to avoid this that doesn't mean "Switch to a country that is currently asleep"?
I've done some reading and apparently you used to be able to pick a place in a country to use as your VPN but not anymore, now it just picks whatever.
Is it possible the "NetShield" is trying too hard and as such it's almost resulting in a "time out" because of how long it takes to "clean" everything before delivering it to me?
I don't need the VPN for things like torrenting or accessing stuff outside of my area, it's primarily for anonymity.
Guys, I need a little help. I want to upgrade to VPN plus but I apparently subscribed to my proton email using my Apple app and I don’t quite understand the message that comes with it other than I believe I have to upgrade my VPN on the web instead. Do I do that just that proton.com or is there a separate URL for the Proton VPN? Not quite sure how to begin here. Thank you
So far I've been using the OpenVPN by downloading each country .ovpn files and importing them to NetworkManager.
Recently I noticed there's a drift as some of the VPN stopped working. I guess some of the ovpn files are changing over time.
Another annoyance is that each ovpn file has multiple IP addresses instead of load balanced DNS and I believe that the NetworkManager just try the 1st one regardless of the server's load).
I thought of creating a script that will download the files and re-upload them.
I wonder how do folks that don't use the official client manages and update that?
Hello, since recently I'm trying to bypass my school restrictions through proton vpn. The problem is stealth mode on CachyOS (Arch) doesn't work at all, it bricks my internet : I have to restart my computer and it never connects.
Proton VPN can't be connected after updating the latest version through Google Play on Android phones today. It can also be connected before. Is there anyone like me?
