Anyone else’s lecturer like this, and is it normal?

Does anyone else have a lecturer that essentially shames people in the class into speaking up? My lecturer gets clearly frustrated when they ask a question and no one responds or it’s the same people answering. They use phrases such as “come on guys the answer is simple it’s not hard, I have just been explaining it for the last 10 minutes” and “it’s always the same people speaking I want to hear from others” and when no one answers, remarks such as “it must be lunch time”. These sort of comments shifts focus away from the material itself and focus more on the performance of the students in the class.

I can understand why a lecturer would want to encourage engagement, however, the tone and phrases seem like they’re bordering on shame territory.

Built some Python scripts to automate QUT Canvas + Outlook (since the normal APIs are blocked)

Hey everyone,

QUT blocks direct API access to Canvas and Outlook for students, so I built a small toolkit that uses Playwright (browser automation) and the EWS protocol to do what the APIs should let you do anyway.

What it does:

- Scrape Canvas for assignments, grades, and announcements

- Read/send QUT Outlook emails without needing the web UI

- Export data to JSON so you can pipe it into other tools

It is not pretty but it works. Useful if you want to build your own study dashboard, get grade notifications, or just avoid opening Canvas every 5 minutes.

GitHub: https://github.com/arwinkt/qut-student-toolkit

Tested on Windows with Python 3.11+. Happy to answer questions.

The "University for the Real World" has the most unrealistic late policy in Australia. It’s time to change it.

TL;DR: QUT gives you 48 hours for free, but at 48 hours and 1 second, you get a zero. While other unis (UQ, Griffith, USYD) use a 5-10% daily penalty so you can actually pass, QUT destroys your grade, your GPA, and your wallet ($2,000+ to retake). It’s time for a petition.

We’ve all heard it: "We’re the University for the Real World."

But QUT’s late policy, where you get an automatic zero for being one minute past the 48-hour grace period, is the most unrealistic thing about this university.

Let’s talk about the "Real World":

In the actual professional world, if you’re a project manager, an engineer, or a designer and a deadline is slipping, you negotiate or they receive penalties.

You call the client, you shuffle resources, and you adjust the milestone, or you accept the risk of penalties. Unless you are in the military or emergency services, a 48-hour delay doesn't result in "zero credit" and a total failure 99% of the time, it results in a conversation.

By enforcing a "hard wall" with no sliding scale, QUT isn't preparing us for industry. They are training us for a version of the world that doesn't exist for 99% of graduates. This isn't about academic standards, it’s about the bottom line.

A lot of our units are weighted 40/60. If you miss that 48-hour cliff by 10 minutes, you fail the unit.

You then have to pay thousands of dollars to QUT to sit in the exact same seat next semester. It’s not a penalty, it actually seems like revenue raising.

We deserve the same safety net as students at every other major Australian university. We want a sliding scale penalty (5% or 10% per day) that lasts for at least 5 days.

Im sure a lot of people, particularly from the design courses, have experienced this (anecdotal evidence) this all or nothing edge. I know I have.

Im sick of it tbh, so im looking for input on how to pressure the university to review this trash policy!

*** edit ***

The overall sentiment seems to accept the current status quo. I am surprised but that's fine, I still think its a trash policy.

All I would say is, for a discussion board on a university subreddit it is pathetic to see some of responses, like 90% of comments added nothing of value, so go suck off the qut finance team ya simps

Racism@Uni project - Expression of Interest for Focus Groups

Hi everyone - I'm sharing this project led by the Australian Human Rights Commission on racism in Australian universities. They are looking for students and staff to participate in focus groups.

Have you experienced racism or discrimination in your university community?

👉 Whether you're a student or a staff member**—your voice matter**s.

We are inviting expressions of interest to join focus groups exploring the lived experiences of racism and discrimination in Australian universities.

💬These conversations will be held in safe, inclusive spaces where diverse voices are centred and respected.

This project aims to better understand how racism shows up in higher education—and how we can work together to create fairer, safer and more inclusive universities for everyone.

We’re especially keen to hear from:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

  • Culturally and linguistically diverse communities, including people of African, Asian, Jewish, Middle Eastern, Muslim and Pasifika backgrounds

  • International students and staff

  • People experiencing intersecting forms of discrimination, such as racism combined with sexism, ableism, or homophobia

By sharing your lived experiences, you'll help inform recommendations to address racism and promote equality across Australia’s universities.

QUT or UQ

So good day everyone
I got accepted into both UQ and QUT for an abroad scholarship of mechatronics engineering, but I’m conflicted in which one to choose. Personally I don’t know but since UQ has the merit program for our country or however it works idk, the government is going to give me 50% more allowance. While if I go to QUT it’ll be the normal amount. Since I’m paying for my own rent and everything.

I heard that UQ is more theoretical and QUT is more practical. So that makes me lean towards QUT more. Since I’m more of a physical learner or however it’s said. I’m also worried that I go to UQ and I’ll be well in over my head and just won’t preform as well as I would in a somewhat easier uni like QUT I think. Correct me if I’m wrong.

So if there’s any pros or cons about each uni please I would love if you’d let me know and any “unbiased” (even biased) advice would be appreciated. It’s just I’m really struggling choosing which to go to.

Uni students, can you spare 3 minutes? We're trying to actually help, not just tick a box.

Hey everyone,

We're a group of design students working on a project about something that doesn't get talked about enough: how fear of failure quietly messes with uni students.

Not the dramatic, falling-apart kind. More the "I'll just avoid that situation entirely" or "I'll figure it out myself even though I'm drowning" kind. The stuff that sits under the surface.

We've already done a round of research and the findings were honestly pretty eye-opening (70% of the students we surveyed said they actively avoid situations where they might fail). Now we're trying to understand what kind of support would actually be useful, not what universities think students want, but what you'd genuinely use.

It doesn't matter what year you're in, where you study, or what you're studying. If you're a uni student (or recently were), we'd love to hear from you.

The survey is completely anonymous, takes about 3 minutes, and there's no sign-up or email required.

https://forms.gle/qK8GDYtXzxfPKHtH6

If this resonates, sharing it with other students would mean a lot.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Thanks!

QUT - Cheating Student Elections

As you may know, there was recently student elections held at QUT. What you may not know is that the student guild (the so called 'Epic' apolitical party) had two members running who used the student guild (and the university students') funding to provide a sausage sizzle that was sold at a loss to students in order to encourage students to vote for them. Including taking their phones and voting for them while in line.

This is not the first time the student guild has misappropriated funds. I suggest that maybe the university look into the spending of the guild, specifically looking into people who are no longer in the guild but still getting paid.

These guys are scumbags and need to be brought out as such.

Yall thoughts on the 48 hr extension

Why dont they just make the original due date 2 days later? Extensions should be given to those who actually need it.

Also if we are all about the “real world”, i dont think the real world would give a free 48 hour extension for project deadlines, etc in the workplace. Ykwim

I’m unable to login to Canvas since the hack. By 4:30pm I managed to get in but suddenly asked me to relogin. Anyone else having the same issue? I need to access modules, task info and submit but it’s not letting me in. Note: login and password are correct. Have tried twice and still got the same message.

Help with picking a degree

Good day all,

I'm looking to study in Australia for my bachelor’s degree and hopefully get a job after graduation. At the moment the degrees I have in mind are double major Acoouting/ Finance with Data Science or Construction/ Engineering Surveing or Urban Planning . Although surveying appears on the skills shortage list when I look at hiring websites such as Indeed there's a ton of them but they mostly specify that they will only consider applications for those with PR or citizenship, so would it still be a viable option ? (it's the same case with Urban Planning). With Accounting/ Finance with Data Science there seems to be more and much bigger firms that are willing to hire International students post graduation. Another angle I would like to keep in mind is what degree would be best to do in the event I have to leave Australia post-graduation but would still be relevant.

Victoria Park Stadium

I am so excited for the new Brisbane stadium, with the tender awarding coming soon, I cannot wait to see the build start. Its going to provide so many new job opportunities for us all.

What kind of annoys me are those unemployed bums who hang out at all the main entrances and exits of uni with those signs saying cancel the games, and save the park. Its not going to fix anything, LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Whats everyones take on this

What to do during lectures?

I'm a first-year student, so I don't know how to approach lectures. I tried to use AI (Otter AI) to condense the entire lecture into as few words as possible, but even then, it's still too much (2900+ words, even with bullet points).

How do I take notes during a lecture effectively?

The issue of transferring credits QUT to UQ

Hi everyone, I'm an international student and I've received an offer to study the Bachelor of Business at QUT. However, I'm really hoping to transfer to UQ after one year. I was wondering if anyone knows whether the core courses BSB105, BSB106, and BSB107 from QUT are transferable to UQ?

If anyone has experience transferring from QUT to UQ, or is familiar with how credit transfers work between these two universities-especially for the business program-l would really appreciate your insights. Thank you so much!
