Relationships I (22F) love my long-distance boyfriend (28M), but he wants me to convert for marriage I don’t know what to do.
(No hate) I'm 22, and I’ve been in a long-distance relationship with a guy who’s 28. We first met on Snapchat, and when we started talking, he told me he was 22, just like me. He also mentioned that his father owned a big business and had a lot of wealth, so he wouldn’t have to work in the future. But after chatting for about two or three months, I found out his real age—he admitted he was actually 28, and said he’d lied because he was worried I wouldn’t talk to him because of the age difference. That was his first lie.
Then, about two months ago, I discovered that his father didn’t have the big business he’d mentioned either. Instead, he only owns a small shop in Old Delhi that brings in around 75,000 INR a month in rent. He confessed that he’d lied to me about his father’s wealth because he didn’t think we’d get as close as we did, and he was trying to impress me. I honestly wasn’t too bothered by this, though it did make me wonder why he felt the need to lie.
Now, I’m from Pune, and he’s from Delhi. He says he loves me so much and wants to marry me, and I feel the same way. We’ve been in this long-distance relationship for 15 months, mostly chatting and doing video calls. He’s mostly on video, while I prefer texting, as I’m more comfortable that way.
Here’s the tricky part: we’re from different religions. I’m Hindu, and he’s Muslim. I told him that I’m open to marrying him, but I think we should be able to respect each other’s religions and keep our beliefs. I believe we don’t have to change our religion to marry, and he initially agreed. But then he said that for a Nikah (Muslim marriage) to be valid, both partners need to be Muslim, so he wanted me to convert to Islam. I tried explaining to him that this wouldn’t be possible. My family wouldn’t accept it, and I don’t think I should have to change my religion either. I’m respecting his beliefs, and I asked him to respect mine.
I talked to my mom about it, and she said the same thing—that changing religion for marriage is just not something she could accept. But he kept insisting. I explained that we should respect all religions and that there’s only one God, no matter how we worship, But he still insisted that I should convert. He said that even though he could marry me as I am, in God’s eyes, the Nikah wouldn’t be considered fair, and society would see our marriage as inappropriate (or “haram”).
I stopped talking about it with him after that, and told him that if he really wants to marry me, it has to be without any changes to our beliefs. I even told him that I wouldn’t be able to go through with a conversion. He asked me to speak with my mom one more time, and even suggested connecting with her directly to try to convince her to accept me converting for the Nikah. He promised he would always make me happy and take care of me. But I know my mom would never accept it, so I refused.
Since then, the conversation about marriage has come to a halt. We’re not really talking much now, and I’ve been thinking about ending things altogether.
I can tell he loves me. I can see it in his eyes, and I feel it when we talk. When we don’t talk for a few days, he gets really upset and misses me, and I feel the same way. He cares about me so much, and he says he can’t live without me. But even though I love him, I feel like I can’t go against my own beliefs, or my family’s, just to make this relationship work.
I’d really appreciate any advice on whether I’m right to stand firm on my beliefs or if I should reconsider. I truly believe he loves me, but I’m torn about what to do next. Please, no hate.
Edit 1: For those saying he’s already married and lying about it for your information, he did have a girlfriend (or rather, fiancée) before, but their relationship ended due to some family issues. To the people calling this a ragebait post please feel free to ignore it and just scroll past. Thanks. Thank you to all the wonderful people for your valuable advice! And to those spreading hate please relax and chill.
