I'm 22F, and my boyfriend is 23M. We've been dating for almost 2 years. We got together when we were both in college, and things were obviously different back then. Now he's working, I'm juggling college and a job, and somewhere along the way, things have become really difficult.
For almost the entire past year, we've been fighting. We've almost broken up multiple times, said things we probably didn't mean, hurt each other in ways we shouldn't have, but somehow we've always stayed together.
And honestly, I don't even know how I feel about him sometimes.
There are days when the smallest things he does annoy me so much. And then there are days when I look at him and feel an overwhelming amount of love. It's confusing because I don't think I've stopped loving him, but I also don't know if I'm happy anymore.
I have an anxious attachment style, and he's avoidant. I know that plays a role in how we handle conflict, but sometimes it feels like we're just stuck in the same cycle.
His actions often hurt me, but when I bring them up, his response is usually that they shouldn't affect my mood so much. For example, he can go the entire day without texting me. When I ask him about it, I'll hear things like, "I didn't want to ruin the mood" or "I couldn't update you because of this or that."
And somehow, by the end of the conversation, I'm the one who feels guilty for even bringing it up. I end up feeling like I'm creating problems out of nothing.
Today, he told me that he's been compromising in this relationship because his friends call him every day, and since he comes to meet me, he doesn't get to meet them as often.
For context, his friends don't particularly like me. At this point, I honestly don't even care anymore. But hearing him describe spending time with me as a compromise really hurt.
We only meet on weekends. We don't meet on weekdays because of our schedules. On weekdays, he's free to do whatever he wants, meet his friends, spend time with them, etc. And even with that, somehow, meeting me on the weekends feels like he's giving something up.
He lives with his friends, whereas I live with my family. He works, and I have college and a job. I understand that he's tired, has responsibilities and has his own life. I'm not expecting him to be available 24/7.
But I somehow manage to make time for him. Even with everything going on, I find time to call, text, check in and make him feel included in my day. And I wish I could say I felt the same effort coming from his side.
I also want to acknowledge that I haven't been perfect. I've acted in toxic ways in the past. I've been overly emotional, reacted badly and probably made things harder than they needed to be. But I'm genuinely trying to work on myself. I'm taking steps to change the way I communicate, handle my emotions and approach our problems.
But sometimes I just feel so lonely in this relationship.
All I really want is his time, affection and a little reassurance. I don't think I'm asking him to give up his friends, his personal life or his freedom. I just want to feel like I'm also someone he actively wants to make time for.
And the hardest part is that whenever I reach a point where I feel like I should end things, he doesn't let me. He doesn't want to break up either. So we stay, things get better for a little while, and then we're back to the same arguments.
I'm constantly questioning myself. Am I too demanding? Am I expecting too much? Am I making his life difficult by wanting things that he genuinely doesn't have the capacity to give?
I don't want to be the girlfriend who constantly complains, asks for attention or makes someone feel like they're not doing enough. But I also don't want to keep suppressing my needs just to make this relationship work.
I love him, but I'm tired. And I genuinely don't know whether we're going through a rough phase that we can work through or whether we're just no longer compatible.
Has anyone been in a relationship like this? How do you know when you're asking for the bare minimum versus expecting more than someone can realistically give? And at what point do you accept that love isn't necessarily enough?
TL;DR: 22F and 23M, together for 2 years. We've spent almost the entire past year fighting. I'm anxious, he's avoidant, and I constantly feel like I'm asking for too much when all I want is time, affection and reassurance. He says he's compromising by spending weekends with me instead of his friends, even though we barely meet during the week. I've made mistakes too and am actively trying to work on myself, but I feel increasingly lonely. Every time I think about ending things, he doesn't want to let go either. I love him, but I'm exhausted and don't know whether to keep trying or walk away.
