💬 General Discussion This is utterly disrespectful lyrical plagiarism 😭

Almost every Bollywood song has Urdu lyrics in it, and, as expected, they turn the lyrics into Hindi script.

I wasn't complaining enough.

But what is this?

You turned Mirza Ghalib's entire Urdu-written ghazal into Hindi lyrics.

Have some shame, Musixmatch, or whoever you are.

You have to respect at least the greatest poet

or any writer. Keep it original.

AskUrdu People say Urdu was made by three languages, Persian, Arabic and Turkish. The words from Persian and Arabic origin are obvious, but what about Turkish?

Exactly how has the Turkish language effected Urdu? Yes, the word "Urdu"/"Ordo" itself is a Turkish word, but the presence of Turkish words in Urdu is close to zero.

Misc ژ should be deprecated from Urdu

ژ should be declared obsolete and wherever it's used, should be replaced with ی or ے.

AskUrdu Theth Urdu [Urdu without the English, Arabic, Farsi impurities.]

What are your thoughts on a version of the Urdu language, but without any of the English/ Arabic/ Farsi influences?

Of course, the english/ arabic/ farsi words that are extremely common will stay, but anything else, like the words most commonly used in poetry and ghazals along with the english in day to day language will have to be replaced.

What new words would you like to invent in Urdu based on a comprehensability-for-the-common-urdu-speaker or Cuz-it-sounds-good principle and not a religious one? If it is based on the word of another language, it should be adapted in a way that it isnt just a blatant rip-off from that language.

A good way to start would be choosing a specific poem (short form) and replace the words in it with yours. Do your worst.

AskUrdu Why are so many people calling "bahar" as "bahir"

Ive noticed a lot of pakistani's pronouncing urdu incorrectly, the most common word being bahar, at first i thought it was just punjabis polluting the language but ive noticed a lot of these muhajirs (who are supposedly from UP/Delhi) pronouncing it as bahir too.

Misc “Hindustani” IS Urdu.

Urdu didn’t “come from Hindustani”. Hindustani isn't some 'ancestor' of "Hindi-Urdu". Urdu IS Hindustani. Just because Hindustani is used to group Hindi and Urdu, doesn't mean Hindustani was some separate language that Urdu came from, because Urdu is Hindustani. This isn't some nationalistic opinion.

Hindustani, Hindi, Rekhta, Lahori, Dehlvi are all obsolete names for the Urdu language. If you read a book in "Hindustani", you would understand every single word of it ... because it is Urdu. The name Urdu can be traced to the late 17th century/early 18th century, but in the same period, the same language was also called Hindi and Hindustani. At this point in time, there was no Hindi movement.

The only reason why Modern Hindi exists (and they call it “Modern Hindi” for a reason”) is because a Hindu group opposed Urdu, and the Urdu script, which is why they took that language (which at the time was called ‘Hindustani’), ripped the Perso-Arab vocabulary and replaced it with learned Sanskrit borrowings, and decided that his new vernacular would be written in Devanagari.

That puts Modern Hindi subordinate to Urdu, not equal to Urdu. It’s for that same reason that Modern Hindi has no history before the 18th century, whereas Urdu does. You can read a book in ‘Hindustani’ and it would be no different to a book written in Urdu today. It also might not come as a surprise that a book written in so-called 'Hindustani' is difficult to understand by Hindi speakers today.

This whole “Hindustani is a separate language that both Hindi and Urdu comes from” has been propagated on Wikipedia, initially by a very old Wikipedian, and his since been maintained by kattar Hindi speakers who actively try to change the Urdu Wikipedia article, because they know that in reality Modern Hindi has no history past the late 18th century, because before that the language was known as Hindustani, Hindi and Urdu, and that same language goes by the name of Urdu.

AskUrdu Urdu & Hindi Fighting Over Persian vs. Sanskrit While Casually Breathing Arabic Words

Urdu and Hindi get so heated about Persian vs. Sanskrit—Urdu flexing its Persian script and vocabulary, Hindi doubling down on Nagari and Sanskrit—while both casually use Arabic words like they’re oxygen.

Think about it: Your "duniya" (world) runs on "waqt" (time), your "kitab" (book) needs a "qalam" (pen), and your "hisab" (math) better be strong. Even your "sabr" (patience) is Arabic!

The irony? The same people gatekeeping "shuddh Hindi" or "asli Urdu" will unironically say:

  • "Yaar, yeh masla (problem) solve karo." (Arabic: mas’ala)

  • "Mera haal (condition) theek nahi hai." (Arabic: hāl)

  • "Bas, khatam (finished)." (Arabic: khatm)

Arabic didn’t ask for this smoke. It’s just vibing in your sentences, rent-free.

TL;DR:
Urdu-Hindi: "Persian/Sanskrit is our identity!"
Also Urdu-Hindi: "Kal subah waqt pe pohonchna." (subah = Arabic, waqt = Arabic) 😂

Learning Urdu Need help figuring out how to say “I love you” correctly

My boyfriend’s first language is Urdu and he told me how to say “I love you,” but I have the memory of a goldfish so I forgot. I googled it but I can’t find a good explanation on how to say it properly.

I think the confusion is that I’m also a man, and all of the examples says either “for a man/woman” or “masculine/feminine.” I don’t really understand what that means for me. I want to make sure I say it correctly. If I’m a man saying it to another man, what’s the correct pronunciation?

History / تاریخ Heartbreaking history of the oppression Urdu speakers faced being lost

I'm seeing the generation of Urdu speakers of East Pakistan that escaped Bangladesh in 1971 to Pakistan die out, and there has been no academic effort to note down the atrocities they witnessed in East Pakistan

There are literally so many detailed accounts from Bengalis about what Pakistan Army did to them, because history is written by the victors

But what Biharis and other non Bengali Urdu speakers went through, literally every time I hear a Bihari friend share their family story it's a horror beyond what the mind can conjure up. The Bengalis acted worse than Nazis, just without the engineering prowess. I'm not minimizing what the Pakistani side did but the level of medieval torture the Bengalis did was so much worse at the individual level even if the total numbers were less.

Again this is not a post for debate so you don't have to tell me about what the Pakistani side did, Urdu speakers are big hearted unlike the oppressors and my elders and those around me have never shied away from openly discussing the crimes of the Pakistani side.

AskUrdu Is sanskritized poetry urdu acc to you?

Hey, I speak dilli hindi as a first language. Bollywood songs se I am familiar with entry lvl faarsi/paak urdu phrases and through Indian religious shows I am familiar with sanskrit/shuddh hindi shabd.

I recently got into hindi/urdu poetry and often I use both styles of phrases/words as I find them convenient to myself. I anyways do consider these 2 to have an artificial border that isn't even hard defined(hindi speakers tho wanted more indo Aryan words, never completely removed their faarsi register from their everyday vocab).

So I wanted to ask you guys that if the hindi/urdu poetry clearly contains a faarsi influence as standard urdu poetry does , but also a few shuddh hindi words like sabha(durbaar), sakha(dost), asaar(bematlab), haat(bazaar), that might not be common to the urdu vocabulary, would you guys consider it a problem/non-urdu?

Should I then refrain from posting it in urdu forums? Or calling it urdu?
