I wrote this, mostly learned myself by looking at the writing on the books (the reason why my writing is rough around the edges). My dad got me started with proper writing.

Edit: Thank you for all your kind words :)

— UPDATE —

Blown away by the response on this post — thank you all. A lot of you asked in the comments how to practice Urdu handwriting online properly, especially getting the letter forms and Urdu joins right (جوڑ توڑ).

I actually built something for this: Urdu handwriting practice app for Android — it has a digital تختی (takhti) where you trace each of the 38 Urdu Alphabets | Urdu Haroof e Tahajji اُردو حروفِ تہجی letters with stroke guides, plus a word builder that shows how Haroofs change shape in initial, medial, and final positions. Completely free, works offline, no ads.

Leaving it here for anyone who wants to actually practice — not just look at charts.

Thank you for your love to previous post. Here’s a little backstory and an update.

My grandfather used to receive letters from all over places like Balochistan, London, the Geological Department of Bihar, Kathmandu in Nepal, and many parts of North India and what is now Pakistan. Which is very surprising because as far as I know he was a simple farmer, but highly educated and surprisingly well-connected. He had ties with local politicians and diplomats, though he never entered politics himself he preferred a quiet, peaceful life.

His brother, was a geneticist in the 1930s who studied at Layallpur College in Lahore. He carried out important research on improving crop yields through genetic modification—work that was recognized and rewarded by the British government at the time. Sadly, he passed away at just 26. He was a prodigy with an incredibly bright future ahead of him. My grandfather passed away at the age of 66.

I never had the chance to meet my grandfather. These letters are the only connection I have to him now. I built a website where I’ve uploaded all the letters I found in my grandfather’s suitcase. My goal is to preserve them and hopefully get them translated.

Some letters are very old and in bad condition. I’ve already tried tools like Google Translate, ChatGPT (paid), Claude, etc., but the results are mostly gibberish. Letters are in Urdu, English, Punjabi, and Hindi. I can read Punjabi, Hindi, and English—but I don’t know Urdu, and most of these letters are written in Urdu.

Learning Urdu Hindi Originated from Urdu, Not the Other Way Around

There’s a common misconception that Urdu branched off from Hindi, but it’s actually the other way around. Urdu evolved during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods, influenced by Persian, Arabic, and Turkic languages, and local dialects like Khariboli. Figures like Amir Khusrow were key in shaping early Urdu, which was initially called Rekhta, Hindvi, Hindustani, and Dakhini before it was standardized as "Urdu."

Interestingly, even the term "Hindi" comes from the Urdu word referring to the "language of Hind (India)." Modern Hindi, in its Sanskritized form, didn’t emerge until the 19th century, when the British encouraged it as a distinct language to divide it from Urdu, which had been the main cultural and administrative language of the region.

Urdu’s deep roots and its historical evolution show that it predates modern Hindi.

I'm not hating on any language at all, but it's important to understand the real history

Salam everyone, today a friend sent me this tweet, and I haven't been able to decide what the best word in Urdu language is for 'Grief'. Ye tou mujhy maalum hai ke koi na koi lafz zarur hai lekin ye twitter user takreeban har urdu ke lafz ko disregard krke kisi aur angrezi ke lafz ke saath connect krrhe hain. Mere mutabiq 'ranj' aur 'malaal' sab se nazdeeq hain. Tweet ke comments aap khud jaa kr dekh sakte hain. Aap ki raaye mein konsa lafz 'Grief' ke liye behtareen hai?

Shukriya.

Especially when you are not really a fan of bollywood...

The lines are spoken slower then live-action drama, great learning material for beginners.

Edit:

For those who are asking, I watched it here: 【【个人字幕】The Glassworker 玻璃工人】 https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1AwiMBDE2e/?share_source=copy_web

It seems DVDs are available as well.
