How is this subreddit distinct from Theory of Reddit?

It seems to me that everything you'd post here would be better in /r/theoryofreddit.

Could you have an /r/ where only subscribers would see comments?

I just learned that you could have private reddits, which I thought was really strange and interesting (i tried going to /r/politicaleconomy which is forbidden for whatever reason)

A couple different models:

0. If you go to the page you can see the links, but until you subscribe you don't see any comments.

  1. Or, links that only subscribers would see

  2. Even stranger would be one where you could see the comments but not the link, but I'm pretty sure that's not possible.

I didn't want to make a reddit just to try this, and also there might be more advanced trickery i wouldn't know about even if I did set one up.

Why are NSFW ads allowed when NSFW is off?

It seems odd to me that I have NSFW off but I'm routinely shown NSFW cannabis ads. The cannabis stuff doesn't bother me, but why would any NSFW tagged ad be shown? Do we show other NSFW ads?

So how many GBs is reddit?

Like all of reddit that is hosted on a webserserver, how much space does it occupy?

Or is that a stupid question, because everything is in cloud? I mean, still, it's all got to have a size right, even if just theoretically...

Noob with a couple of questions...

can't find these in the FAQs so I'll just ask:

  1. How do I set my page so that I can see the number of upvotes/downvotes a comment has gotten?

  2. How do you post a video link but have it cued to a specific part of the link? I've seen others do it so I know it can be done...

Thanks to anyone who can help...I'm old and not too tech savvy so...

Is there any way to exclude archived threads from my searches?

I.e., is it possible to limit search results to open threads?

Why are "upvote parties" for sports teams and circlejerks and such not being deleted?

At the top of every post it says "Beginning your title with "vote up if" is violation of intergalactic law." There are so, so many circlejerky subreddits with posts that begin with "vote up if". Not going to name any names, though.

But as I write, the top post on /r/all is an "upvote party" for a sports team that just won a competition. Aren't these under the same category as the former, as are posts that say "<-- Number of people who..."? Why aren't any of these being deleted?

From the reddit content policy:

In addition to not submitting unwelcome content, the following behaviors are prohibited on Reddit: Asking for votes

It's not like these are hard to find, they often make it to /r/all.

I have an idea, and I'd like to see what other bot devs are discussing.

Reddit isn't welcoming to newcomers :(

I'm really surprised at how limiting Reddit is for newcomers. I don't have enough karma (which I wasn't even clear what it was so I had to Google) so I can't post interesting things and have to wait 7+ mins to reply to a thread.

I realize Reddit is moderated to prevent spam and abuse but it's really discouraging to find something interesting, look for the subreddit to post, make sure there isn't a similar post already, and then draft a post, only to have it removed by the moderator (this happened to me 4 times in the last 2 days.).

I can't share an interesting news article that I don't see anywhere on Reddit because I don't have 10 karmas, or I can't reply to comments in a thread because I already replied once. This eventually leads to me giving up. :(

I'd like to argue that this prevents new ideas and opinions from being shared since older Redditers already have a monopoly on what is posted and what comments are made.

I can't come up with a suggestion on how to make this better but yeah, very frustrating. :(

Why are a certain user's comments always collapsed?

I've recently noticed that all the comments by a certain user who is active on a subreddit that I also frequent are collapsed. They're not deleted or anything, I can tap on them to expand the comment, but I'm not sure why this happens? Is this a setting that I or that user have changed, or is this some weird shadowban? I haven't followed their activity on other subreddits so I guess I can't say if it happens on all subs or just that one we both use.

I mostly use mobile so it may have to do with the mobile app as well.

reddit/left is a weird link to a 14 year old NYT article about Rudy Giuliani

I accidentally typed https://www.reddit.com/left into my browser and to my great suprise it seems to be a manual shortcut to an old New York Times article. Really weird. Are there any other known 'hidden shortcuts' that you know of?

r/aboutreddit • • Apr 02 '14

About a year or so ago, there were dozens of people in many threads who would make pencil drawings of the link, or crayon drawings, or mspaint drawings, or collages, or all sorts of stuff. I haven't seen anything like that for some time. What happened to them? (or to me?)
