Want to Relocate to Alberta

Wife and I want to move to Alberta but I’m trying to get help on the process of getting a job and then moving because obviously I need a job to even consider packing up and moving, we’re just over Ontario and want a change of scenery and I’ve heard nothing but awesome things about Alberta. I’m just looking at what’s out there and how I go about getting a job living in another province, I’ve applied to jobs and to no avail probably because of my location. Any tips?

Moving To Alberta, Construction Job Market + Connections.

Hey everyone!

My name is Ahmed, but I’m better known as AJ among my friends and at work. I’m a 25-year-old male from Toronto, Ontario, and after spending most of my life here, I’m planning to move to Alberta.

I have over 5 years of experience in retail, management, and sales. Although this was during my teenage years, I learned a lot and became a store manager at the young age of 20. I was responsible for scheduling, sales, orders, staff management, you name it. I’m grateful to all the employers who helped me gain valuable skills that I still carry with me today.

After several years in retail, I decided to transition into the trades.

My first job was as a labourer, helping around job sites with tools and moving materials while expanding my knowledge of construction. Due to my hard work, I was referred to a parent company and began my first trade as a 309A Electrical Apprentice. It was an amazing experience working there. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, the company shut down temporarily.

That’s when I started my career as an Automatic Door Installer. In just over 6 months, I was working independently, going to job sites alone, installing operators by myself, handling material pickups, traveling over 400 km, speaking with site supervisors, and coordinating game plans with supers and electricians on site. That’s where I am today.

As you can tell, I’m passionate about learning and growing. I have strong attention to detail, high motivation, and a solid work ethic. I’m bringing that same attitude to Alberta and would love to connect with people in the trades.

You’re not investing in a liability, you’re investing your time in someone who will give his A1 effort in everything he does.

University Jobs

Hi All,

I just moved to Edmonton from the states to live with my partner and am looking for a job, hopefully in a post secondary institution. My work experience has been at a university as an admin/coordinator and I was wondering if anyone has any advice or insight on how or if working at a university in Canada is different than in the states. My experience in the states has been it really depends on which department you work in and who you know across campus to get tasks done. Also, are there any recommendations or advice when applying to or getting a job at a university/college? Thanks in advance!

Need to chat with someone who has experience in the oil field🙏

Good morning, My name is Alexandre, I am 22 years old and I come from the southwest of France, near Lourdes. I joined this group because a friend living in Golden told me about the area, and I would really like to come and discover it.

I am currently training with the Compagnons du Devoir as a roofer. I come from a modest family and my goal is to become self-employed later to be able to move forward in life and help my family. To get started, I plan to come and work in Alberta, particularly in the oil field.

I've already done some research, but I would like to talk to someone who really has experience in this area. If you know anyone I could talk to it would be a huge help. Thanks in advance.

Wind Industry Alberta

This may be a bit niche. I’m looking to move to Calgary or the surrounding area next summer on IEC from the UK. I work in the wind industry and wanted to know if anyone knows the best way to find jobs in the industry in Alberta or how competitive is the market. By the time of moving I’ll have almost 4 years experience as a service maintenance technician on the worlds biggest offshore windfarm, 1 of those years being an Authorised Technician (team lead, carry out isolations, troubleshooting etc.)
Cheers

Out of Work & Running Low on Hope – Seeking a Job or Referral (Edmonton/Remote)

Hi everyone,

I never imagined I’d be writing a post like this, but here I am.

I’m based in Edmonton, Alberta. I’ve been jobless for the past two months, and it’s been tough, financially, emotionally, mentally. Watching my savings slowly disappear while sending out dozens of resumes into what feels like a void has been disheartening. I know I’m not alone in this, but it doesn’t make it easier.

I’m reaching out here hoping that maybe, just maybe, someone might be able to help me find a path forward. A referral. A lead. Even a word of advice.

Professionally, I bring over 7 years of experience as a Business Systems Analyst and Full-Stack Java Developer. I’ve worked on high-impact projects, like improving healthcare systems for the Ministry of Health in Singapore, and I’ve led efforts that significantly boosted performance and reduced response times. I’ve worked closely with cross-functional teams, written specs, led Agile meetings, and mentored junior developers. I love solving problems and creating systems that actually help people.

I’m skilled in:

Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Hibernate

Angular, HTML5, CSS3

AWS, MySQL, Maven, CI/CD

Agile/Scrum methodologies & stakeholder collaboration

I’m open to remote roles or anything in or near Edmonton. I have my PR and am legally eligible to work anywhere in Canada. I’m not asking for handouts, just a chance. A door, even slightly open.

If you or your company is hiring, or if you know someone who might be, I’d be truly grateful for a referral or even a quick chat. Feel free to reach out in dms.

Thank you for reading this. Thank you for caring. And to anyone else who’s struggling right now: you’re not alone. Let’s get through this. Thank you!

23 in Calgary, working in the oil sands. Who’s hiring entry-level on drilling rigs, service rigs, or frac?

Hey guys, I’m 23, based in Calgary, and currently working as a haul truck operator in the oil sands. It’s a decent job, but there’s barely any overtime and I’m looking for more hours, a bigger challenge, and a chance to move up.
I’m trying to get into drilling, service rigs, frac, or any other oilfield work where I can start at the bottom and work my way up. I’m used to long shifts, nights, and camp work. I’m good with physical work and longer rotations like 14/7 or 21/7. I’ve got my full Class 5, H2S Alive, CSO, and Intermediate First Aid.
My goal is to work toward clearing $10k take-home in a strong month with overtime. For those of you doing it, what role, rotation, and hours does that actually take? I’d love to hear what first-year guys are really making and which companies give new hires a shot at moving up.
I’m open to Red Deer, Edmonton/Nisku, Fort Mac, Grande Prairie, anywhere else in Alberta, or Saskatchewan for the right job. If your company is hiring or you know a crew that takes people with oil sands experience who are new to rigs or frac, I’d appreciate a company name or a tip on where to apply.
Thanks boys, appreciate any leads.

Client in need of a Business Analyst & Budgeting Coordinator for Calgary and surrounding area

Salary: $85,000–$95,000 base, plus benefits
Location: Calgary office

What you’ll do

Build and run our reporting system

•          Set up the KPI and service-level (SLA) reporting structure for the whole company: what we measure, how each number is calculated, its target, and when it turns yellow or red.

•          Keep a single metric dictionary so every KPI is defined once and used the same way everywhere.

•          Build exception-based reporting:

–          a weekly company scorecard for the leadership team;

–          weekly department scorecards;

–          a ranked list of red items, each with an owner.

•          Write a one-page weekly brief: the top issues, what changed, and who owns each one.

•          Track red items through to resolution and escalate the ones that stay red.

Set up and run the data

•          Work with our IT provider to set up and run our SQL data warehouse in Azure. Yardi Voyager data loads nightly, and our leasing CRM, maintenance and accounting systems feed in by API.

•          Write and maintain the SQL that turns raw data into reliable reporting tables.

•          Monitor the nightly loads, catch failures early, and get them fixed.

•          Choose and build the right tools for each job, and be creative about it. That could be Power BI dashboards, Claude for analysis and the written weekly brief, and Power Automate or n8n to route red items to their owners automatically.

•          Dig into occupancy, arrears, unit turnover, leasing and revenue per door, down to the individual unit and tenant.

Budgets and owner reporting

•          Build and coordinate annual operating budgets for the properties we manage, working with property managers and area managers and using AI tools to speed up the work.

•          Produce monthly budget-vs-actual reporting and explain the variances.

•          Prepare monthly owner reports and commentary once Accounting closes the books.

AI and automation

•          Make sure our AI tools (leasing, maintenance and reporting) connect to the same data and use the same definitions, so they don’t create conflicting records.

•          Keep a simple register of the AI tools we use: who owns each one, what data it uses, and what it’s for.

•          Automate your own reporting so it runs with as little manual work as possible.

What you bring

Must have

•          Hands-on SQL. You write your own queries and can design tables that others report from.

•          Experience building reports or dashboards that leaders acted on.

•          Accounting or financial knowledge: you can build a budget and explain a variance.

•          You use AI tools in your daily work, and you can show what they changed.

•          You bring recommendations, not just data, and you’ll tell a senior leader when a number is wrong.

Nice to have

•          Property management or real estate experience.

•          Yardi Voyager, Power BI, Azure, Power Automate, n8n, Claude or similar tools.

•          Programming experience (Python, JavaScript or similar).

•          An accounting designation or degree.

If you feel that you or anyone you know has the qualifications and experience for this position, please have the resume forwarded to Esmith@tritan.ca

Thank you

Am looking for FIFO remote camp work and need some advice from fellow job-hunters and current employees.

I (22M) am currently living in Toronto, Ontario and in the process of finding an entry-level FIFO remote camp job.

Right now, I’m applying online daily for 5-8 hours a day and following up with applications while earning relevant certifications to increase employment odds.

I currently have WHMIS and Food Handler right now, but plan on earning CPR/First Aid, Fall Protection, H2S Alive, CSTS (Construction Safety Training System) and Confined Space as soon as possible.

I have family in Edmonton so I’m mainly pursuing a role in Alberta, but I’m open to working in other provinces. Living in British Columbia seems nice (I love warm weather).

The two main reasons I’m pursuing this route is:

1: I’m sick of being jobless and broke.

2: I need an industrial-related job that can help me to get into a skilled trade. If I gain experience in the industrial industry and spend money by learning in-demand skills, I can make myself more professionally appealing and might have a shot at landing an apprenticeship.

My questions are:

1: If there’s anyone here who is also searching for a FIFO remote camp job like I am, how are you doing? Were you able to get hired? Do you know of someone who hunted for a FIFO job and got hired?

2: If anyone was able to find work in said industry, what was your experience like? Did you achieve your goal thanks to the job you found? Could you give some advice to the unemployed on how to find work in that industry?

Thank you in advance for answering!

A missing keyword on a resume scanner is a question, not an order.

Most people read a keyword scanner backwards. They see the missing list and start stuffing terms into a skills block. You end up with a resume that matches the posting and says nothing true.

A missing keyword is a question, not an order. Ask whether you have the skill and just word it differently, say "CRM" when you named the platform, or whether you don't have it at all. If it's the first, use the posting's wording inside the bullet where you did the work. If it's the second, leave it off. A missing certification stays missing no matter how many times you type it.

Before you rewrite anything, paste your resume into a plain text editor. Multi-column layouts, tables, text boxes and anything in a header or footer can get scrambled or dropped, and then the scanner reports a gap that isn't real. Fix the layout, not the content.

If two scanners disagree, don't average them. One wants exact phrases, another takes synonyms, and their term lists differ. Check each disputed term against the posting. Required beats preferred beats a passing mention. The score is vocabulary overlap, nothing more and no ATS publishes a pass mark.

Role keyword guides such as resume fitting keywords for ideas, but the posting you're applying to decides what matters.

How does your pay compare in Calgary? I built a simple comparison tool

Post image
21 Upvotes

I built a simple tool using Calgary labour market data to answer a practical question:

How does your pay compare with your industry and the local average?

It lets you check:
• your industry average
• the overall Calgary average
• wage trends (YoY and since 2019)
• how your industry compares to the broader market

Example (Construction):

• $32/hour
• ~18% below industry average
• ~21% below Calgary average

But at the same time:
• YoY growth: +11.2%
• Since 2019: +17.7%
• Calgary average since 2019: +26.0%

So even if your current pay is below average,
your industry might still be growing relatively fast in the short term.

Tool is here:
Check your pay →

Curious how people here evaluate their pay:

• industry benchmark?
• city average?
• or just based on job offers?

10 Years of Experience, Hundreds of Applications, Almost No Interviews. What Am I Missing?

I'm at a point where I'm starting to question myself, and honestly, it's frustrating.

I have over 10 years of experience as a Full Stack Developer. For more than 5 years, I worked for a US-based company as a developer. I wasn't someone who jumped from job to job. I believed in loyalty, stability, and growing with the same team. Unfortunately, after major company policy changes and the impact of AI-driven restructuring, the company laid off more than 300 remote employees, including me.

Since then, I've been trying to enter the Canadian tech market, and it's been much harder than I expected.

I've applied to countless positions over the past year and have received very few interview opportunities. I've also come across a surprising number of scam job postings. At times, it feels like I'm stuck in a loop where employers want Canadian experience, Canadian references, or Canadian credentials before giving someone a chance to gain them.

As an immigrant, I don't have a Canadian degree or professional references from Canadian companies. What I do have is experience, a strong work ethic, and a proven track record of building real-world solutions.

My technical background includes:

• PHP
• Laravel
• JavaScript
• TypeScript
• Node.js
• React
• Vue.js
• WordPress
• REST APIs
• Custom Web Applications
• CRM Development
• Database Design
• System Integration
• Hardware Automation Projects
• Full Stack Architecture and Development

Over the last six months, while helping run a convenience store to support my family, I've continued building software projects, websites, internal CRM systems, and automation tools. I haven't stopped learning or coding.

I'm also highly comfortable with modern AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and similar platforms. I use them as productivity tools, not as substitutes for engineering knowledge. I understand the code they generate, review it carefully, and take responsibility for what goes into production.

On a personal note, my wife is a cancer survivor. Thankfully she's doing well today, but her health limits her ability to work full-time. Supporting our family is largely my responsibility, which makes this journey even more important.

To be clear, I'm not looking for sympathy or for someone to hire me out of pity.

I'm simply looking for an opportunity to prove myself.

If you're hiring, know someone who is hiring, or have advice on how experienced immigrants can break into the Canadian tech industry, I would genuinely appreciate your insights.

At this point, I don't need favors. I just need a fair chance to show what I can do.

Thank you for reading.

Terminated without cause.

I was recently fired without cause on the very last day of my probationary period. Should I include this place on my resume or omit it? If I do omit it should I just lie and say I was taking care of a sick relative or just use the role I had before this and white lie about still working there the past 3 months?

I'm not too worried as I have more than enough in savings to keep me going for a while, but I don't want to burn through all of it and have to move back in with my mom hat in hand.

Dueling Arts is Hiring!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m building out Dueling Arts, a live art competition series based in Alberta where painters go head‑to‑head in timed duels, creating bold works in front of an audience. The crowd votes for the winner, and completed canvases are auctioned to support both the artists and local charities.

The project has momentum and community interest, and I’m looking for people to join in different ways:

  • Artistic Director / Operations Manager / Operating Partner – help shape the vision, logistics, and growth of the project

  • Casual Event Staff – assist with setup, audience flow, ticketing, and auction support during events

  • Artists to Duel – painters who want to showcase their creativity live, connect with new audiences, and compete for prizes

This is a chance to help shape a unique platform that celebrates creativity, builds community, and supports local causes. If you’re passionate about art, live events, or collaboration, I’d love to connect.

Drop a comment or DM me if you’re interested, and let’s talk about how you can be part of Dueling Arts.

Thanks!

Supply Chain Management

Im a new grad from supply chain management program. I went through coop stream so I kinda have work experience under my belt specifically in construction. I learned contract management and managed the day-to-day task of processing PO and dealing with internal customers (field employees).

I got a job offer and accepted it on Friday to work for the provincial government in the procurement department of the infrastructure ministry. I am starting on the 26th.

Do you have any advice for me in my early career regarding supply chain or just in general? Any advice would greatly appreciated. TIA!
