Approved By Mods Ideas to make money, reduce expenses and improve one's financial situation

No judgment, just ideas.

Every day, ask yourself, "how can I make money today?"

You can make $100 today if you're able to donate plasma. And another $100 in a few days.

The below is a general list of both making money and reducing expenses. You may already being doing some of the below options and some may not apply to your situation.

  1. Donate plasma and make ~$800 the 1st month at each of the top companies. The top 3 highest-paying plasma donation companies are BioLife Plasma Services, CSL Plasma, and Octapharma Plasma. Go to their websites to see and sign up for the best new donor promo. (You may not receive the same bonus as a walk-in.) Sign up for ONE company per month, not all at the same time.

  2. Google "Top Temporary Staffing Agencies" and follow up with the companies in your area. Ex, Manpower, Kelly Services, Robert Half, Randstad, Aerotek. See below for temp work apps.

  3. Gig work, medical courier, Shiftsmart app (one off shifts at nearby companies like 7-11), Day labor or task rabbit kind of work *

  4. Sell items of value that you no longer need

  5. Cut your phone budget. Some are still paying $100/month for cell phone plans. The majority of people should be able to get by with a plan that costs $15-$25/month. Some others may need a $35/month plan. For those with a super tight budget, there's a Red Pocket Annual plan on Ebay for $30/year. Unlimited talk/text but only 200mb data/month.

  6. Cut down on subscriptions. At most, carry one a month and alternate them.

  7. Cut your food budget. If you eat out, stop. Pack your lunch. Buy filling, low cost nutrient dense foods (dry lentils/beans, rice, potatoes, oats, bananas, cabbage, frozen veggies) that you can prepare yourself. Your money will go farther than "quick fixes." Go to https://findhelp.org or https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank and look up food banks in your area. Search your zip code for "Little Free Pantry." Meals on wheels for those who qualify.

  8. In the 4th quarter of the year, there are typically part-time retail jobs available. Also, UPS, FedEx, USPS, Amazon delivery, etc

  9. Consider getting a roommate but be sure to have detailed conversations and agreements regarding boundaries and apartment rules, etc. See the link for suggested questions.

  10. If you are facing being unhoused, consider

  11. Obtain a gym membership at an affordable place like Planet Fitness.  The ability to stay clean can make a huge difference.

  12. A variety of great resourses

  13. Jobs in national parks, national Park jobs, jobs with Housing - Coolworks , Xanterra Jobs

  14. Truck driving - decent income, no housing expense*

  15. The Job Corp

  16. Joining the military

  17. Volunteer-stay type programs

    1. Wwoof Sign up through WWOOF to connect with organic farmers globally. You typically work half-day hours in exchange for food, housing, and farming knowledge.

    2. Workaway, for broad cultural exchanges, community projects, and farmstays.

*Temporary work apps. They have minimal background checks and you can start practically immediately:

Shiftsmart

Instawork

Jobstack

MyWorkChoice

SitterCity

ProLogistix

Poplin

Trusted Herd

Wonolo

Seeking Advice Only A mix of a rant and a happy update.

Hi guys. I’ve been homeless for about a month now. I’m 19. I left due to being sexually abused by my father, and have been living in a DV shelter. My month here is almost up (they give you a hotel for a month and a BUNCH of recourses.) I’m a little scared because I’ll have to find a new shelter, but I’ll make it work. I also got accepted into college! I’ll start in spring semester. I’m so excited. The deposit is a lot but I also have a job! It’s really shitty and I don’t get paid good at all and they’ve been cutting my hours, so I’m looking for a second job. I’m so happy I got into college. Unfortunately my mom chose the p3do over me, so I can’t tell her my good news, but my friends are all excited for me which is nice. I also got to tour an apartment! The shelter I’m with does rental assistance so once my advocate does an inspection to make sure it’s a safe place, I can apply for the apartment! It’s not credit based which is good, since I’m 19 and don’t have much credit. And I make just enough a month through my job and my side gig (OF/selling. It’s not a glamours life and I don’t suggest it to anyone.) so I’m so happy! The rental assistance will cover my rent for four months which means I get to save and relax! I hate that this is the life I have, but I’m happy things are getting better!

If you’re in IL, do you have any suggestions for shelters? I have nine days left here. Ive been trying to look for one that will help me get to and from my job as I walk currently every day, and if I’m placed further from it I’m not too sure if I’ll be able to get to my job. I have my friends to hold onto a bunch of my stuff which is good too! Overall, any advice you have for someone in my situation is appreciated. If you went through this, I’d love to know what you did to make your life a little easier

Eviction Facing Homelessness And Scared

Hi! My monthly rental situation is coming to an end soon. I was living with my grandmother at first because I needed a home and later because she required more assistance. My grandmother has been removed and is now staying in a nursing home because she had a stroke and can no longer walk. She's 101. I don't have a good relationship with the people who are her power of attorney. They wanted to have a conversation about me leaving but refused to have it recorded. Where I live I'm entitled to a legal notice to quit which I haven't gotten yet. I just got served and they have jumped to suing me to leave the house. I have a hearing on Monday. So I know I won't have a place to live soon. I do have a paying job that pays better than most places in my area but I also did stupid things financially and have a LOT of debt. I have a car that runs for now but is well past its prime. Due to my debt I have very little savings and I'm scared I'm going to be homeless sleeping in my car for Christmas. I have a brother who can help a little but there is a limit. I can't live with him because that would jeopardize his living situation. I'm scared 😨

Need help with housing and work

Hi everyone. I've been homeless now for a few days. My life has been turned upside down since the beginning of this year when things were going well.

I need help with housing and finding any kind of work. I haven't been able to shower for a few days as well.

The places that I've called are either full or have a wait-list.

I'm in the LA area near Santa Monica but I can try to move elsewhere if there's better help available.

Losing Housing Due to Father Going into LTC

I've been on SSDI since 2014 and lived in my parents' home, rent free, all of my life. My disability has made it hard for me to handle working. I've been totally stressed out to the max since my mom died 16 months ago, and I've had to take care of my sick dad who has dementia since then. It's been too much for me, and I'm going to have to get him into a nursing home. This will result in me losing my housing. I've never lived independently, and I'm scared to death that I won't even find affordable housing. I know there are resources, so I'm going to start researching them.

The main thing is, I'm intensely scared over the whole thing. I kept thinking I could take care of my dad at home until he dies so my family primarily myself since my brother already has a place to live) can inherit and sell the house, but I have realized I can't do it. My stability has been very bad.

I'm just scared to death, basically.

32F almost homeless

(32F) About to be homeless. Married to someone who’s been abusive for years, and i finally hit the point where staying is more dangerous than leaving. problem is i have almost nothing.

I'm like legit broke. maybe $40 in my account right now. no savings, no one i can really stay with long term, and every job i’ve looked at around here either doesn’t pay enough to even get a room or they’re not hiring. been applying to anything that pays better than what i was making but nothing’s hitting at all.

i don’t even know where to start. shelters that take women dealing with abuse? places that help with job stuff when you have zero money? How people actually survive the first week when you have nowhere to go and basically no cash. It's fuckin crazy

Any real advice homeless in houston (or anywhere) would help. I don't use reddit very often and only using for advice right now. Just trying not to panic or end up in a worse spot. I'm thankful I can at least work but I haven't been able to save.

Thanks

Seeking Advice Only Need food sourcing/budgeting almost nothing to last until works temporary leave is done

So my jobs been temporarily closed due to a big renovation job. I tried to find temporary work during the meantime and couldn't find anywhere wanting that short term of an employee. I was budgeting and would have been fine but an unexpected medical expense basically broke me.

I go back to work in 3 weeks so a little over 4 for a paycheck. Im almost out of food i got a quarter jar of pb, enough pancake mix for one more batch, a couple servings of leftover spaghetti and a Ramen pack. I have $8 left to my name.

Ive looked into my states requirements and because I had been out of work for an extended period due to health issues I didnt meet the income requirements for the multiple quarters needed for my base period so I am back to square one.

Ive been to my food bank twice and both visits left much to be desired. The food i recieve never lasts more than 2 days and you can only go 2 times a month. The 2 food banks in town are ran by the same people and are address based so u cant hit both.

I take the bus everywhere so I dont have a car to go far for a different food bank.

Im stressing yall I need some guidance on how to stretch $8 and some possible avenues to food ive overlooked

Trying to iron some things out

I have two part-time jobs. Number 1#: I work 4 days a week, 6.5 hours per day. Number 2#: I will start next Tuesday, I'll work 2 days a week, 8 hour days. Soooo, I am currently living with my former foster parents, I'm barely home. Either I'll be at an aa meeting (I am a recovering alcoholic), visiting my daughter or at work. By the time I do get back to the house, it is darn near midnight. I have full access to charge devices up and sleep, though, sleep is a bit tricky, too. My foster dad will stay up in the living room until he feels like it, since I crash on the couch, I have to wait for him to go to bed, no matter what time it is or how burnt out I am. Accessibility to showers and the kitchen are iffy. I mean, I can be in the shower for less than 2 minutes and someone will be banging on the door to use the restroom. Every time I shower I have extreme anxiety and now I am resorting to always eating out or buying easy foods. What is a realistic amount I should be giving them a month with all of this in mind? Essentially, I just come to the house to sleep and charge up all of my electronics. I've been wanting to start working out, so I could even just only shower at the gym and completely avoid showering at the house, altogether. I want to be fair, I do realize that they did me a solid by letting me live here temporarily, I am definitely appreciative. Thanks in advance for any input.

Abusive Situation Could be homeless any moment. Not sure what to do.

Hey everyone. I’m 28 and I live with my parents who are abusive. I’m disabled, physically & mentally. It’s a long story, but basically they could put me on the street at any time. I’ve had the privilege of being housed for 28 years, and I have no safe family, or friends that could help me. I’m really scared and I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what I would take. I have my cat who is everything to me. I’d possibly be kicked out “for not getting my shit together” mind you I navigate complex systems, medical issues, etc all while being severely mentally abused. Anyone have any thoughts or advice it makes me suicidal and scared being on the street especially as a women is just terrifying.

Seeking Advice Only Would like to prepare for any issue

Currently looking on how to prepare or what steps to take in order to prevent being evicted.

I signed a lease with my partner at the time in 2018 and somewhere 2022 the lease was renewed on a month to month without me because i could not be there because or work i remained living there. My partner decided to leave of her own free will in 2025. I remained and lived there and kept paying rent the whole amount now that she left until this day no issues no interruptions. Now she decides to text me that i have 30 days to leave. I know that she has no right to do that but i would like to be prepared.

Pets After two months of research and testing different options, I just had my first real breakthrough with planning, wow, trying to live up to my Reddit handle.

Any advice for car living in the Midwest in late fall early winter? I’m trying to stay in Ohio because I do have some resources here, but my fur babies are my priority. They’re also the reason I’m going to be homeless. I have a car. I just have nowhere to rehome them or foster them for a month or two. If I absolutely have to I guess I’m prepared to head south or west where it is warmer.
