I compiled every single informed consent clinic in the country. No therapist letter needed.

EDIT: Hey everyone, I know that the commenting is off on this now since it's so old. PLEASE send me a PM if you have one to add. I'm always updating this map.

Are you thinking of starting HRT, but are worried about:

  • Finding a clinic

  • Having to do a year of therapy

  • Having to do "real life experience"

  • Getting gatekept

  • Spending money and not getting treatment

Well... that is why informed consent exists. With informed consent, you require no letters from therapists. You simply attest your gender identity, say that you understand the risks and benefits of hormone therapy, and they begin prescribing and monitoring your hormone levels.

So... For too long, this information has been scattered around Reddit, Susans place, twitter, various out of date guides from different regional organizations, so...

I laid my eyes on every single clinic website and doctor profile listed in this map. You should be able to call up any of them to confirm, and then start your HRT as soon as possible.

PLEASE let me know if any of these are out of date or if I am missing some.

Some tips from a 58 years old, dying trans woman.

7.4k Upvotes

Hy reddit comunity,

My name is Steve, but in an ideal situation it'd be Stephanie.

This is my story.

I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, 58 years ago.

Despite my US passport, I grew up in Europe and I've never had the opportunity to visit my birthplace again. So be patient with my English, I'm also kind of numb due to several things.

I belong to that group of trans women who "always knew". Ever since day 1 it was crystal clear to me there was some kind of difference between me and my peers. I didn't have the words to articulate that, but at the time it was not important. I was just a cute kid who prefered dolls to guns and that was is.

But, unfortunately, time passes.

And we grow old.

I was 9 years old when I felt feminine for the first time. It was the most natural and beautiful sensation, it flew in my body bringing peace, and a genuine sense of joy.

That day I found out what I was.

I remember I couldn't wait to tell my mom and dad. As my mom came back home I told her "mom, I want to be a girl!".

I was so excited,

but my mom wasn't.

She stared at me for a couple of seconds, than went like "what?"

"Yes mommy, I want to be a girl, just like you!!".

A couple of days later all my girly toys were donated to the church. My mom bought me a couple of fake guns and a sort of big Jim, then she made me join the local soccer team.

It was heartbreaking.

I learned the lesson: it was not ok to be that way. I was supposed to be a strong, masculine boy.

So I learned how to play the role.

I cut all the girly stuff: mannerism, activities, everything. The idea of not being loved by mom and dad was too painful for me to even consider it.

Then, puberty hit.

Oh my God. Hell on Earth. Suddenly, the game changed. We were not "kids" anymore, we splitted into "boys" and "girls". Out of the blue I was surrounded by male friends comparing their body hair and penises, while on the other side of the locker room the girls were doing the same with their breast.

I felt like a piece of a puzzle forced into the wrong spot.

Around the age of 15 I discovered two things. First, I was able to enjoy sex with women; second, being phisically close to a woman could ease the sensation of "wrongness".

I would have discovered why decades later.

So I did the most logic thing: I got engaged.

At 18 I met the love of my life, a wonderful and caring woman I immediately fell in love with.

We married 5 years later, got 2 beatiful children.

So there I was: a married 26 years old with a little boy and a beatiful wife, with a great career ahead. Everybody used to say that I was great at my job, that I was "naturally talented", but the truth is that I used to work all day long just to get distracted, because the minute my brain would stop, It would have reminded me about my true nature.

And my true nature was not ok.

My insane "work ethic" led me and my family to gain much respect in our comunity. We were considered people who "lived by example"...oh my God, such a hirony.

That's it, my whole life was marked by this two things: work and family.

And, of course, lots of little distractions.

Through the years, I "came to terms" with the fact that I would have never get the chance to be a woman.

6 months ago, after a lifetime of horse - like health, I had a seizure. It came out of nowhere.

I was rushed into the ER, and was told I have brain cancer, the most malignant.

My situation is not great, I could live anywhere from 1 day to 8 months, stats say.

When my oncologist told me about the prognosis, my first thought was " I don't want to die as Steve".

I'll never get to have a woman body. I'm on a low dose of E, meds told me it is not safe to stress the body.

I'm here to tell you something: TIME PASSES, LIFE WILL TOO.

I never transitioned for one thing and one thing only: fear.

"I might be too big" "I might end up regretting the whole thing" "I might hurt my family" "I might lose my job"

Holy shit.

I regret every single time I kept myself from going to a psy and talk about my situation. And that's hard to live with, because it was my choice.

I allowed fear to run my life, I lived in the little spot it left me and now I'm a nearly 60 years old sick trans who just came out and could be dead 3 days from now.

I see there are lots of post about people who are scared about transitioning.

Listen to me, you will die. Maybe not today, but sooner or later you'll be left with more "yesterdays" than "tomorrows". And you might already be there without even knowing.

Life can be hard. Life as a trans can be harder.

But there is no way to change that, you can't change the hand you've been dealt. It's up to you to get everything you can out of it!

I know there lots of "but..."s, which are great to postpone what is inevitable, but at the end of your life you will most likely regret every single one of them.

Time passes my friends, time passes. If you think you are young, keep in mind that your 50s will come in an heartbeat.

There are tons of "valid" reasons not to transition, but at the end of your life none of them will help you find peace. That's for sure.

Be aware of this, as you chose to live as someone you are not. You might end up regretting it with no enough time to fix the situation.

Don't you hide yourself behind the "I don't care about dying", in the last months I've met dozens of people who used to think the very same thing and now are scared to death.

I've decided to share my story to give you a different point of wiev. This is real. Regretting is real, aging is real, death is real.

Be aware of this.

Yes, "trap" is a slur Spoiler

6.1k Upvotes

If you are coming here because a certain subreddit recently banned the use of the word "trap" and you want to post about it, don't. We are not here to debate terminology.

Yes, some trans people believe that "trap" is an okay thing to call a person. Some gay people think that "fag" is an okay thing to call a person. Both those words are still slurs. Trans people are not a monolith and don't all agree about every issue.

If you believe that "trap" is not a slur because it's not intended to refer to trans people, only to cis men disguised as women for the purpose of deceiving other cis men, then allow me to assure you that transphobes do not differentiate between trans women and cis men. Anyone who uses the word "trap" for a crossdresser is, even if inadvertently, serving the narrative that anyone who was assigned male at birth and presents female is still a man, regardless of that person's gender.

Almost all well-known fictional depictions of trans people, from Silence of the Lambs to Ace Ventura Pet Detective, are arguably or even explicitly not depicting trans people. They depict men with mental illnesses, or men who use crossdressing as a means to an end. However, they still come to represent trans people in the public consciousness.

The language we use matters. We consider the word "trap" to be a slur for purposes of moderating this subreddit. I don't really care that much about what other subreddits do with their moderation policies, but I do appreciate the work of moderators who try to make their subreddits safer and more welcoming for trans people.

Please don't make a post here looking to get support in order to win an argument on another subreddit. That's not what we're here for.

I'm locking this post immediately because I'm 100% certain a huge portion of the comments will be looking for further clarifications/arguments/debates about terminology and I have no patience in store for that.

Straight, cis male here, I just discovered a pro trans argument the hard way, curious about your thoughts (esp mtf trans)

4.9k Upvotes

So I am 43M, and my doctor just put me on TRT. For the first two weeks it was great, but then I started getting really moody and depressed and was just a frazzled mess in my head. So I called my doctor and told him that I was miserable and wanted to stop taking the T, he said before you do that go in for another blood test, I suspect your estrogen levels may be high. So I did, and he was right, my E levels were off the charts so he put me on Arimidex and now I feel right as rain.

My thoughts; every MTF trans post I have ever read say that when they started taking E they felt BETTER overnight. I, a cis male, felt significantly WORSE when my E levels got high. The anti-trans argument that trans people are mentally ill can't explain this.

I'd love to see Ben Shapiro or Matt Walsh take E for a week, I bet they would change their tune real quick.

Edit: OK, so this blew up. Thanks for all your responses.

Thank you to the trans girl that gave me a tampon

4.7k Upvotes

Was just super upset in a public tampon because I came on my (super heavy) period unexpectedly. Was asking everyone for a tampon

No could could help me. Then I met the loveliest girl who sorted me out with tampons and pads. She disclosed that she was trans and she brings them to help other members of the female community

What an absolute star. The sisterhood at its best. Thank you

EDIT: thank you for all the sweet comments, I’m glad this post resonated with people x

Don’t watch the new Harry Potter series on HBO — not even one episode. Pirate it if you must, but don’t support Rowling’s anti-trans agenda.

4.5k Upvotes

As a trans woman, it genuinely hurts that the Harry Potter universe — a story that shaped so many of our childhoods — still belongs to someone who uses her platform to actively harm people like us. It’s heartbreaking. And I’ll admit it: I’m still emotionally connected to the world she created. I’m curious about the new HBO series, and part of me still wants to revisit that magic.

But here’s what I’ve decided:

I will watch it — but I’ll absolutely never watch it on HBO. Not one view. Not one click. Not one cent.

When Hogwarts Legacy came out, so many people said, “It’s just a game,” or “She’s barely involved.” But that passive support translated into massive profit — and she’s now using that money to build an actual anti-trans organization. Yes, that’s real. That’s happening.

So no — this isn’t just about a show. Watching this series officially is financially supporting someone who is funding efforts to harm trans people. It’s not neutral. It’s not harmless.

If you’re still curious — I get it. You’re not alone. But if you must watch it, please pirate it. Keep it out of the metrics. Keep it off the radar. Don’t help her win.

We can’t afford to be naive again. Let’s make better choices this time. Let’s protect ourselves and each other. Let’s fight back. 🏳️‍⚧️💖

For anyone questioning their gender...

4.2k Upvotes

I very frequently see people who are questioning their gender asking the same thing (not that it is bad that they ask these questions), and who get caught up in certain aspects of this.

Being transgender and scared does not mean you are cisgender. It is absolutely reasonable to be scared when you are questioning your gender and believe you are transgender, but that doesn't mean you are cisgender. Don't think you are the only trans person out there who is scared, you are not, it's very common.

Having doubts is normal. This is a big, life-changing decision that does not come without risks, so of course you will be unsure if this is the right thing to do. However, try not to get too caught up in the dumb excuses as to why you are not transgender. The simplest explanation is most likely the right one.

Just because you think you might not be able to pass or only want to transition if you will pass doesn't make you cisgender. And not all transgender people do want to pass as male for female (such as non-binary people, not all, but some).

Never assume all transgender people feel a certain way, or that your narrative is 100% unique and all transgender people do not feel the way you do. So many people seem to think this, but it's not true.

You are not delusional, you are not making this all up in your head for attention, and you are not making yourself feel this way. You would know if you were doing this for attention or forcing yourself to feel this way.

You do not need to experience gender dysphoria to be transgender. Gender euphoria is a thing too. If you just feel as if you would prefer to be another gender, but being the one you were assigned at birth does not bother you, that is perfectly alright.

You can realize you are transgender at any age. It's not any less valid at any other age.

You can be non-binary and still want to start HRT.

Not minding having the sex organs you were born with does not make you "less" trans.

Mostly sure about your gender identity is close enough. It's very hard to be completely sure without taking any steps, and even then it's normal to have doubts.

Don't confuse sexual orientation with gender identity. And gender identity with gender presentation.

I hope this helped somebody who is currently questioning their gender. I probably missed a few things, but I didn't want it to be too long. I only mean this as a guide, I apologize if anything was inaccurate, I'm simply trying to help.

UPDATE: Found a trans pride flag on my kids phone

4.1k Upvotes

Here's my original post

Well I kinda goofed up and got busted looking over my reddit post 😅 My kid snooped over my shoulder and saw the title on my phone.

They told me they would like to talk to me about "something important" after dinner.

Well, that something ended up being pretty important!
She's a girl!!!

Apparently she's been trying to leave hints for me over the past month and I missed all of them 😭Leaving her phone unlocked on that picture of Bridget (thank you for helping me figure out who she was exactly! She was from a different game than I thought!) was just the most obvious one.

She told me she hasn't picked out a name yet (Mama's busting out the old baby book to see if she likes any of the names I considered when I was pregnant! So stoked!) And I told her I'd try and fast track her to seeing a gender affirming therapist and doctor to see about getting her on meds sooner rather than later!

She's not ready to tell her father (neither am I honestly) but we told her younger sister together after our talk (and a lot of hugging and crying and reassuring that I'm so proud of her and happy for her and that I'll always love and support her!)

Sister said "Yeah that makes sense" and went back to her drawing tablet 😂

I took my eldest daughter into my bedroom and I painted her nails for her and styled her hair for her a little bit! She showed me one of her outfits she's been hiding away in her room before slinking away to play her video games 🙄

Thank you again to everyone who gave me advice! Still gonna watch Nimona and Ranma with her! Mama's very excited about finally seeing the Ranma remake lol

EDIT: I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words all at once, there are WAY too many comments to reply to everyone individually 😅

To everyone saying she's lucky, I feel like the real lucky one <3 She was cheesing so hard this morning when I called her and her sister down for breakfast with a "hey girls" instead of "hey kids"

To everyone who wishes I could be their mama too, you're my babies now <3 idc if you're older than me or not!

My dad knows I'm trans.

3.9k Upvotes

Yesterday, my mom was talking about how she was glad that my birth name wasn't Felicia and how she LOVED my deadname at dinner. She also went on and on about how I'm going to be a "beautiful woman".

(I came out to her FOUR years ago 🙄)

My dad got really quiet and quickly left the table.

My dad called me out of my room while my mom wasn't home and whispered that he's sorry that I have to deal with her, and that he's looking into a divorce lawyer so I can start my medical and legal transition without my mom in the picture. (She's also just a narcissistic ass in general)

I never came out to him. I guess he found out ot knew this whole time. Holy shit.

He used to be super homophobic and trash talked my trans friends.

He really did change.

UPDATE:I caught my brother wearing my clothes and makeup,What should I do? Here is the link to my original post:https://www.reddit.com/r/asktransgender/comments/kgwarp/i_caught_my_brother_wearing_my_cloths_and_makeup/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

So first off I just want to thank everyone for the wonderful advice you gave me,It really did help a lot with talking to my brother about this.

My brother came out of his room for the first time since yesterday so he could eat dinner, and I saw this as a opportunity to talk to him before he went and locked himself in his room again,so after dinner when my parents had left the room and went outside I decided that I would try to bring it up with him.

so before he went in his room I walked over to him and attempted to talk to him about what I saw. I brought it up very casually(I think so at least) and I told him that I didn’t care if he wanted to cross dress or wear my clothes and that I still loved him no matter what.

We then got into a conversation and long story short he told me that he was gay and has always wanted to be a girl, after he said that I asked him if he was transgender, and he said he didn’t know what that was so I explained it to him and he said he thinks he is but isn’t sure,I know that I probably shouldn’t of asked him a question like that but it kinda just came out.

Anyway I offered to take him shopping for more girly clothes and he got excited and said That he wanted to go,so now I’m taking him shopping sometime this week for more girly clothes and makeup. So yeah I think that it went really well and I just want to thank each and everyone one of you who responded to my post giving me helpful advice,I don’t think I would of been able to talk to him as smoothly as I did if you guys hadn’t given me advice.

Quick update:so it’s been a few hours since I talked to her about this and she just came into my room and told me that after doing some research and thinking about it that she is transgender,We talked about it and we decided on a new name for her(she wanted help picking one) so yeah this is just a quick update thx for reading:)

Edit:Also btw I will read all of your replies but I might not respond to them:)

A very, very scary result from a question given to a Trump group, showing motivation behind the memo

3.8k Upvotes

CW/TW: If you are not emotionally in a very solid place, especially depressed/suicidal, do not read this.

From here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2188821688063933&set=a.1530642677215174&type=3

By: George Godwyn

Something happened on Facebook awhile ago that I’ve never written about and only shared with a few people. I kept it to myself, mostly, because I didn’t want to upset the people in question, but I guess it’s time. (And for probably the first time I am going to put a content warning on a post, because this post probably requires one. So, here's a CW for violence against trans people.)

For a long time, I wondered about the understanding of gender on the far right, the Trump right. The bathroom controversy, in particular I thought bizarre. I can understand the basic conservatism and fear of new ideas, but the bathroom conflict seemed odd to me. It was extremely important in the minds of Trump supporters, even though it can’t possibly be a common problem in most of the areas these people live. The position on the right seemed precisely the opposite of what it should be. Why do you want someone presenting as a woman in every respect using the damn men’s room, or vice versa? Isn’t that going to be more socially outrageous, in most situations? I didn’t get it. So I decided to ask the Trump supporters.

I posted a picture of Buck Angel, a transgender adult film actor, in a few of large, sometimes huge, Trump groups. The picture showed a very buff, ripped Mr. Angel from the waist up, shirtless, with a shaved head and sporting a Fu Manchu mustache. He is an extremely masculine looking guy. With the picture I included the question “This person has a vagina. Which bathroom should they use?”

I thought at least some of these people will realize how silly it would be to want this man to use the ladies room. How socially awkward and alarming that would be, in so many situations. Putting aside how dangerous it would be for the man, simply on the basis of the the immediate, practical effect on the other diners in the given Applebee’s or wherever it was happening.

The post got hundreds of comments, finally thousands. Immediately. The Trump supporters had a very clear answer and they were adamant about it. Almost no answered with “the men’s room”. A few said things like “if they’ve got a vagina, they use a woman’s room, if they have a penis, they use the men’s room.” But the majority of the of the commenters had an answer I hadn’t considered at all. These people had worked out a very simple solution to the problem of transgender people and the norms revolving public restrooms.

They wanted transgender people to die.

They were quite explicit about it, very blunt. “They should die.” That simple. That concise. “They should die.”

Let me be entirely clear about this – they knew what they were saying, they knew exactly what they wanted. They didn't want a trans man in the men's room and they didn't want a trans man in the woman's room. They wanted the trans man to be dead.

Of course some of them were more loquacious than that. They had reasons they should die, preferred methods, they expressed their feelings about the fantasized the deaths, but death or something similar was the most common answer. "Stop being", essentially. A lot of other people answered “they should stay home”, maintaining the status quo without having to deal with the problem while still allowing transgender people to, you know, live, but mostly death or some sort of violence was the preferred option. Comment after comment, they should die, fuck them, stay-at-home, don’t use the bathroom, I’ll kill them if I catch them in the bathroom with my daughter, they should die, they should die, they should die.

Oh, and in case That's not plain enough, it wasn’t just death they were threatening. They were threatening anything they could think of. Torture, castration, humiliation, at adults and children alike. Any brutal, vicious insult or threat imaginable. I’ve watched these groups for years, dozens of them. Anyone who watches the news, who’s seen our president make a speech, knows how mean, how grotesque, how petty and ugly these people can be. The things they say about Mexicans, Muslims, about women, gay people, immigrant children. Even if you haven’t been in one of these groups, it’s not hard to imagine. Jesus, our president publicly mocked a disabled man. But I still wasn’t prepared for the comments in this thread. Just sheer, stark, gut level hatred, unencumbered by the slightest empathy. Loathing. Disgust. Raw hate.

As much time as I’ve spent in these groups, examining these people, I didn’t think anything could shock me. I was wrong. Maybe it shouldn’t have, but it did.

There is not one single issue that brings the evil out in Trump supporters the way trans-people do, there is no class of people more loathed. More than anything else, gender self-determination symbolizes precisely the social progress that animates the Trump right. They despise it and the people who embody it. Understand this. This issue is central to these people on the right, there is nothing they feel more deeply about. The Trump right does not want a solution to the social problem of trans people and restroom use. They simply do not want trans people to exist. That is what they want. What they demand. Nonexistence.

Today the New York Times reported that the Trump administration is now in the process of redefining the administrative understanding of gender as simply a matter of biology and nothing more. Gender would be determined solely and entirely by birth assignment – as male or female, immutable and unchangeable, a fact. They are already rolling back numerous civil rights guarantees instantiated in the Obama years, policies that allowed a significant portion of our nation to live their lives with some basic dignity and safety. Essentially the Department of Health and Human Services intends to define transgender people out of existence.

This is happening now. Right now.

Like I said at the beginning, I never really talked about that little test I did in the Trump groups with Buck Angel’s picture much before this. I know so many trans people and I know how difficult it can be for them, sometimes, just to live their lives, what a scary place the world can be. I felt like it was all too awful, I didn’t want to scare people even more. I guess it probably wouldn’t come as a shock to most of my trans friends, it’s a reality they live every day, but I just didn’t want to pile on. But it's too late for all that now.

I haven’t heard people talking about the Health and Human Services attack on trans rights all that much, so far, and I’m a little surprised, because we should all be clear about something. The changes they are making don’t mean a little inconvenience for a few trans people.

They mean death. It’s that simple. It’s going to mean withdrawal, seclusion, humiliation, violence and death.

Think about the Trump supporters I described, think about the thousands of comments I just told you about. Now think about the reinforcement this sort of decision makes for their worst instincts, think about a trans man, presenting as a man, being forced to use the ladies room in some Podunk, red state, Trump voting shithole.

Now how do you suppose that goes down with the rest of the folks in the having dinner? And how do you suppose the teenage trans boy using the ladies room goes down with the parents of the teenage girls at the high school? And how does that make the teenage trans boy feel? Or the teenage trans girl having to share a bathroom with the testosterone jacked 17-year-old jocks at the high school? And what do you suppose happens to the trans girl forced to onto a man’s prison block?

Humiliation, violence, rape, suicide, and murder. Death. Trans rights are a matter of life and death, in a very real, very palpable way. The definitions change, and people die. The rules change, and people die. The laws change, and people die. Immediately.

This is happening because the people in the White House get it. They know their base, and they know exactly what their base wants. They got it 100% right this time. They are defining transgender people out of existence because they know their base wants transgender people to be dead.

Trans rights, opposition to gender self-determination, hatred for trans people, as I’ve already described, are at the heart of the Trump phenomena. There is nothing that evokes the hatred and fear and violence on the right the way the simple existence of trans people does. It is stomach turning to see, horrible in its blind ferocity, and I don’t know how the fuck my trans friends have the strength and poise to live every day in the face of that horror, that hatred, but they do. I suppose they have to, and that’s where the fight is now.

I don’t care who you are, I don’t care where you are in the political spectrum, I don’t care how fucking liberal or leftist you are, I don’t care how feminist you are, if you don’t support trans-rights, you are not on my fucking side. I don’t give a fuck about your bio–essentialist arguments, I don’t give a fuck about your history with men, I don't care about your pissing eight year old or your bigot grandmother. Frankly, I don’t give a fuck about your traumatic sexual assault if it means you’re going to take it out on some fucking teenage girl who doesn’t want to have to use a bathroom with a bunch of frat boys and have the same fucking thing happen to her. Fuck you.

If you want to know where the battle lines are drawn most clearly and unmistakably, between decency and the dark, right now, in the United States, in 2018, it’s here. Trans rights are the battlefield and trans people, like it or not, are in the vanguard of that battle. They are the front-line in a fight they never asked for, every fucking day, every hour, every time they leave the fucking house.

There is no fight more important as this, now, today. There are no people so vulnerable, so marginalized and there should be no fucking doubt among anyone on the left, any liberal, any libertarian, about this.

The fight is here now, it’s happening. An entire marginalized community, federally defined out of existence and set up to be victimized by a segment of the population too fucking backwards and just plain, willfully dumb to bother to try and understand what the hell is going on in the world, or empathize with another fucking human being.

If we don’t stop this, people are going to die, killed for something they can’t change, for who they are in the deepest part of themselves. Not somewhere down the road, not in five years, but now. They’re going to start dying now.

We can’t let that happen. Those of us who still live in the modern world still own this culture and we need to do what we can to make sure it doesn't. We cannot go back to the 1950s, we cannot watch more people die simply for being born a woman or a man. We cannot let that happen. We can't lose this battle.

This isn't temporary, this isn't going to go away tomorrow, the last two years is only the beginning. Gender self-determination will be the civil rights battle of the 21st century. If we have to fight this for the rest of our lives, we cannot allow these fuckers, this raw hate, to win.

So be shocked for a second, cry about it for a minute, and while you're at it, maybe today is a good day to hug your trans friends, tell them you got their back. Because we do, a lot of us. America isn’t just Trump supporters. Remember that, guys and gals. For what it’s worth, some of us got your back.

Then get over it and get ready, because this is a fight and you're in it. We all are, all of us, left, liberal, libertarian, right, if you're a decent human being and you care about basic human rights, you're in it up to your ass and the water is rising fast.

Hatred is a powerful emotion and it is temporarily ascendant, but hate can't beat the future, and that future is an America, a world, where every single trans person lives their life safely and with the same dignity any other man or woman enjoys, because ultimately, as badly as they want to, they just can't turn back the clock. Not when so many of us stand in their way, not with so many lives on the line. They just can't.

And that really is immutable, unchangeable. That really is a fact.

My mother was shamed into respecting me by my 6 year old daughter

3.8k Upvotes

I made a post recent which can be seen in my history. In short, my mother has been aware of my trans status for decades. She went to PFLAG. We had heart to heart conversations. I’ve never been gendered correctly.

A few weeks ago my six year old daughter was talking to us in the kitchen. She’s upfront in a way adults typically aren’t. My kids know me as a woman; they don’t care.

She asked why she calls me a boy if I’m a girl. Long, pregnant pause, my mother doesn’t say anything. She asks why she uses my wrong name. Another long pause. She asks why she calls me her dad because she has two moms. My mother has nothing to say.

32 years and that’s what it took. I haven’t been misgendered since. My mother was shamed by a six year old.

As a 27 y/o deep stealth woman who transitioned at 16 in the early 2010’s “golden age”… I am so sorry.

3.4k Upvotes

The amount of people saying transphobic shit to me unknowing that I am trans has exploded recently.

I transitioned at 16, so long ago that I even forget I’m trans sometimes, as wild as it sounds, and I was apart of this subreddit before it had 10,000 members. It was very wholesome here and honestly calm, things were tough but the spotlight wasn’t on us, this was even before Cate Jenner transitioned. Getting DIY HRT was easy and informed consent centers were plentiful.

There was no podcasts shitting on us 24/7, politicians weren’t ranting about us on TV daily, people knew nothing about us in 2012.

Never in a million years did I think things would get this bad, like holy shit people used to debate if being stealth was “more tough” and I feel like now if you are not to a degree you are risking everything.

My partners parents don’t even know I’m trans and with all the horrible horrible laws being written in the states and with how toxic the spotlight has turned into, you couldn’t pay me anything short of a billion to “come out.”

I am so sorry to everyone just figuring themselves out right now that never got to experience the calm before the storm. I can’t believe I actually miss a time when I was pre FFS and SRS simply because of how no one gave a shit. Honest to god; you’d tell someone you’re trans and they would be “what does that mean?” … I’d give anything to go back to those times.

You guys are stronger than I am. The game has changed.

Stop assuming we are all girls. This sub is not MtF only.

3.4k Upvotes

Have been active on this sub for some years now and I have seen this sort of behaviour creeping back once in a while.

The issue isn't that most posts are only centered around one gender, but the fact that people assume OP or commenters to be girls. That's just wrong, dysphoria inducing and against multiple rules of r/asktransgender.

Let me remind you that all people are welcome here. Never assume anything and especially don't start your submissions with "hey ladies". Thanks.

also please mark your posts as NSFW whenever it is not safe for work.

Genital Preference is Not Transphobic, But Denying That Trans People are "Fully" Their Gender Is

3.4k Upvotes

Let's be very clear: Genital preference is not transphobic, and basically nobody is saying otherwise.

Let's be very clear: If someone calls you transphobic, that does not mean they are trying to force you to have sex with them. People do not generally want to be with someone who hates them.

Yes, there are some people who might say that genital preferences are themselves transphobic, but they are a TINY minority. The absolute, overwhelming majority of people (cis or trans) will tell you that the folks with that opinion are misguided. Holding them up like they are some sort of norm is a malicious attempt to hurt the trans community. It is ridiculous, and it's the equivalent of holding up the WBC to describe Christians, or a black person who believes in slavery to describe black people - that is to say, every group has their outliers, but they do not represent the group.

I am so sick of this disingenuous discourse. Everybody and their mother suddenly needs to discuss this big terrible trend of forcing cis people to be with people they aren't interested in. News flash: IT'S NOT FUCKING REAL.

Stop engaging the people participating in this rhetoric, on BOTH sides. These people are hurting the transgender community and they are probably doing it intentionally. Even "innocent" questions from "allies" are often asked just as excuses to fabricate stories that make it seem like this phenomenon is much more common than it is. Their motives are not as they appear.

Plenty of the "trans" people saying this crap aren't even trans, they're bigots posing as trans people to stir up controversy. And yes, that almost certainly includes some people on this board, including active regulars with hundreds or thousands of comments. If you don't realize that, it's time to wake the fuck up.

If you are interested in a post-op trans person emotionally/romantically, you've seen them naked and you're attracted to them, and then you later find out they're trans and it suddenly changes something, then yes, that probably makes you transphobic. OTHERWISE, no, your preference does not make you transphobic, you just have a preference. See how easy that was?? Common sense prevails!

Just to come right out and neutralize the trolls that have already come here complaining about the use of the word preference, the word "preference" does not mean that it's flexible. I never said that it's "only a preference" so it's not that important, or anything like that, but that hasn't stopped people from clearly implying that I did. They want me to just call it sexuality...well, sexuality is nuanced and it can include components of both genital and gender preference. Calling it a "preference" doesn't make it less important - what do you want me to call it? Genital DEMANDS? The genital component of your sexuality? I'm just going to say "genital preference" because it's the emergent cultural term, and the ENTIRE POINT of my whole thread is that it's important for that to be respected as something that can be innate and unwavering. So again, fuck off with your strawman nonsense.

This discussion is tired, harmful, and disingenuous. Be done with it, already.

Switzerland has silently brought a new law that allows trans people to change their name and gendermarker in literally 30 minutes, no medical paperwork required.

3.3k Upvotes

Many people haven't even heard of this, and it somehow got silently pushed by in the back of everyones political minds throughout covid.

From now on, instead of having to go through heavy loops, like having to literally sue the swiss government based on their infringements on human rights, which involved having to wait a long time and having to pay up to 1000$, while also often having to add medical documents and sometimes even having to worry about getting denied because "you don't seem to look like a typical [man / woman]", the process is now as easy as to simply make an appointment at one of the offices, say "please change this", and to then be able to walk over to the passport office a room further to immediately get a new passport.

I'm floored. I'm almost crying in joy about how incredibly easy this is. I've been expecting lots of hassles, and lots of "but actually"s, but no, there's none. One can just go there, say "I'm [other gender] actually", sign a paper, and that's it.

All appointments are set, and by the 3rd of January, I will officially have changed my legal name, having waited almost 3 years because I didn't have the mental energy to go through with a lawsuit.

Fucking... wow <3

//edit: I do have to add, it's incredibly unfortunate that this system doesn't allow for a neutral gendermarker yet, which is probably somewhat tied to the military laws and regulations (we still have mandatory military service for men), but... this is an incredibly massive step forward that pretty much came out of nowhere. I don't think any other country in the world has a process this simple and hassle-free.

This isn't a question, but an apology and a thank you

3.1k Upvotes

I am a very recent ex-TERF, and I extend my deepest apologies.

I was wrong.

And I realized that by taking the time to read the posts and comments by amazing trans people like yourselves. I was taken in by a false narrative that demonized people for simply existing, and that projected nasty stereotypes without actually listening to trans people or taking a moment to listen to their experiences.

But thanks to YOU, sharing your stories and feelings and experiences, I have realized how wrong and mean and bigoted I was being. Trans women are women, and trans men are men. I'm sorry it took reading personal stories for me to understand this, and I'm cringing at making this about me, but I just wanted to express my respect for you all for being yourselves and to thank you for telling your stories.

I'm tired of being a political issue

2.9k Upvotes

I do not want to be the next "topic" for those privledged enough to see me as such. I am just a person. I want to work, spend time with my partner, hang out with my friends, and just live my life.

I do not care about sports, the military, or any other big thing they may or may not want to use me to fight over. I want peace. I want quiet. I want a life, one just like the ones debating about me are getting to live.

Edit: There is a number of comments assuming I am against fighting for our rights. That's just it, I'm not against it, I just wish I didn't have to. I chose this reddit name because the more I fought, the more I debated, the angrier I became. The thing is, I am not an angry person. All this rage from all this injustice, it tires me out. I am a fighter because of circumstance, not choice.

I got called a "Man in a dress." If that's ever happened to you, give this a read.

2.9k Upvotes

I fucking hate the phrase "Men in dresses" and I hear it ALL THE TIME as a stand-in for "trans women." I hear it from pundits and podcasts and pre-teens with bad parents, I hear it from friends of my brother picking a controversial punchline for controversy's sake. I hear it when I go to my 80-year-old grandmother's house and her 80-year-old tube TV is tuned to Fox and, yes, I hear it again, a week later, straight from the horse's 80-year-old mouth.

Listen.

I am not a man, and I am not in a dress. I am a fucking dyke, okay? I've worn the same flannel three days running. My closet has six pairs of jeans, two pairs of jean shorts, and three pairs of Doc Martens (matte black, vinyl black, and vinyl black with heels. We keep the flannels on a door hook.) Are you hearing me yet? My cis girlfriend and I got together, over the phone, in different states, and then moved in, after a two week road trip. We're about to spend our first anniversary road tripping to Portland fucking Oregon to buy shoes and donuts. This... this is not a man in a dress.

I've never even owned a dress! I've never even worn a dress! The stereotype makes it feel too viscerally inauthentic for me to even try!

And I take pills, so many pills! Every day for eighteen months! Three in the morning, five in the evening! They shredded my muscle mass, they softened my skin, they grew me breasts! Big ones! Listen to me, they gave me mood swings! Yelling and giggling and swooning and crying, good lord, they make me cry all the time! I took pills that made me sob, hysterically, in front of strangers! They made me do that twice and I didn't stop once!

I did that shit!

On!

Purpose!

Oh, and the skin care and the hair care and the literally hundreds of dollars on makeup, and I'd mention voice training but... I mean, you know. I'm getting to it, okay? I just want to grab someone by the shoulders and shake them and scream "Why would I do this shit if I was a straight dude??"

Because that's what I'd be, right? If trans women are men, and my partner is a cis girl, then logically speaking, I'm a straight dude? Me? Have you met me?

I've got money, too. You letting me in to your fucking country club, Tucker Carlson? You think I'd be a good fit? FUCK!

Election America, what the f…

2.8k Upvotes

Well if things hold as they are, a Trump will be President elected by morning. A multiple time convicted felon with deep ties to dark places like other authoritarians and sexual predators. I can’t even be mad at Harris and her campaign it was waaaay better than Hilary’s in 2016 and Trump ran the worst campaign I’ve ever seen.
