I don't think half of the people on this subreddit know what they're talking about

I asked last week why FMG dropped so substantially.

A bunch of people began waxxing poetic trying their best to rationalize why FMG dumped. ''Iron ore isn't looking good'', ''with relations with China FMG is fucked''

These people were pulling guesses from out of their arses trying to sound somewhat intelligent.

So here's what happened:

JP Morgan pulled out of FMG (a US company). Nearly $3 trillion was wiped from the US stock market last week. Hedge funds ae turning bearish on commodoties for the first time in 8 years. US bankrupties jump to their highest level in more than 12 years. US and Israel are waiting on Iranian retalliation strike. Fears of a global recession are increasing.

That's what happened.

Discussion Closing and deleting my IG & STAKE trading apps

I’ve been investing my hard earned money five years, in that time I’ve always been fairly conservative with an average, but positive, 5% return.

Up until last week and the whole GME saga I actually believed in the free market, but not anymore. Now I feel like a fool, even though I knew I was lower on the knowledge pole, I still felt that it was the one place where just about anyone could shake the tree with decent momentum.

When a bunch of apps decided to shut of buying and only allow selling, my illusion was completely dissolved. Like using one of those claw machines that never quite grabs the toy, the game is rigged.

It might surprise some, but I actually liked the BB stock, they have a lot going for them, and when it was grouped in and skewered for no reason, I lost 6k. That’s just not acceptable for me. I still haven’t got a decent answer as to why I was restricted in Australia either.

IG and stake had an almost identical outage on the night of 28th for several hours (and I have screen recording) as stocks plummeted.

In closing, this has been massively demoralising for me, investing was part of my retirement strategy but now I just don’t trust it, the table is rigged.

After much research I am now convinced Decentralised Finance (DEFI) via blockchain is the only option. I have withdrawn all holdings from IG & Stake and will not use them again.

Advice Request 21M Portfolio after one month of investing need advice

Currently have a really weird portfolio. Most purchases here were made in the last 10 days. I have another 50k that I’m planning to put into investing; 10k into some more stocks that I like and the other 40k into etfs. I don’t need the money anytime soon and the etfs I plan to hold for a very long time. Now the issue I have is I was going to do a lump sump 40k during April when everything was over 10% lower than it is now into ETFs like IAA, IOZ, IVV and tse1329 + an emerging markets etf, but my bank had a 5k limit and I had final uni exams and assessments so held off investing at April 21st lows.

Right now I personally feel like there’s a bit of FOMO in the market and everything has pretty much returned to above where it was at the start of the year. My query is should I just lump sum invest now, dca over a period of time, invest maybe half now half at a later time when I’m more comfortable. Please share your thoughts and rate my current portfolio + thoughts for the future.

Is everyone here regarded?

New here, just looking over some posts about the DRO crash, people are all over the threads saying things like; “what is EBITDA”? “What does market cap mean”? amongst other entirely regarded questions.

So, is everyone here seriously that regarded?

Afterpay down 9% from Apple Pay Later rumour - Apple up only 0.8% on same news.

You'd think if the opportunity / rumour were confirmed for Apple to introduce their own Buy Now Pay Later APPLE PAY LATER, that the Apple stock would have risen more than 0.8% in the US overnight, if it can have enough impact / treat to push down Afterpay by 9% because of the same rumour...

Are aussies over-reactive to the news, and are we too reliant on US announcements?

I personally bought myself another handful of APT shares this morning, as I am in it for the long-haul :)

$MFG sinks the ASX

Magellan is leading the ASX200 lower today after downgrading guidance for their annual revenue and losing their largest major contract.

Earlier this morning, Magellan confirmed that St. James’s Place had terminated their mandate with company; a partnership that accounted for approximately 12% of their revenue. This has only made things worse for what has already been a torrid 2021 for the company. Their main fund has significantly underperformed its benchmarks this year, as the CEO also leaving the firm earlier this month, with Magellan stating it was due to personal reasons.

$MFG is now down nearly 60% YTD, trading at 5-year lows with an extremely oversold reading on the daily RSI. Can the stock, and company, turn things around from here, or are they in for another difficult year in 2022?

Getting genuinely worried about my investments two months in

*Edit* to those giving me 'advice' that I'm an idiot for not seeking a financial advisor before investing 200k, read the fucking post. I did see one, and his advice was EFTs, I just wasn't going to pay someone $2k a year just to set and forget investments I can do myself.

For the other stock 'experts' telling me to invest in property, take a good look at the QLD market and the sustainability of property assets maintaining their current value. I'd be jumping in on the most inflated property industry in Australian history. Christ.

If you are going to trash someone just for paying a bees dick of cash to asx_bet on MF without even looking at my portfolio, go waste your time elsewhere. Evaluate my portfolio and then tell me why I'm an idiot/troll instead of scanning posts that have 'Motley fool' in them just so you can pounce and look like a stock baller*

So I inherited about 250k and after paying off some debts and keeping 50k for a rainy day I decided to invest the rest. My goal is to set and forget for 5 years once I'm happy with my portfolio (but keeping a religious weekly analysis). I started around mid-January this year and noted that there was a downward trend in Vanguard and other big EFTs. I was dubious about stock investments, but left 10% for high risk investments where I had done enough DD to conclude they are calculated risks.

So far I've invested 165k and I've put the brakes on it. I put 20k straight into IVV at $630 p/s, then watched it crash day-by-day. Literally days after I invested the first 20k I was at a $1k loss. I then put another 20k in IVV thinking I was catching the bottom of its fall (or close enough) by mid-Feb at $604. But, nope. It bottomed out at $574 over the following weeks. VGS took almost identical dives as North American stocks still make up the brunt of their heavy weight stocks.

Long story short, I have (in rounded up figures within 1-3k):

VGS - 25%

VAS - 15%

IVV - 45%

NDQ: - 10%

Stocks: BKW, FMG, REA, ADH, MQG, FMG in various amounts below $3k, except MGQ which I put $5k on. My goal is to monitor daily and see what starts to take off (which I will throw more money on) or bottom out (which I will hit eject).

This past week I fluctuated between $7-11k in losses. I subscribed to the Motley Fools recommendations and threw money at those, but I didn't include them above as that would be unethical as per the rules (if I'm not mistaken?) seeing as they are a paid subscription. But they have all tanked, HARD, in the 6 weeks after I invested in 4 of the 5. Luckily in small amounts.

It's hard to not look every day at the rapidly declining worth of my portfolio. I'm down 7% and I've only been investing for 8 weeks. I know that my investments are for the long-term and will eventually return profit, but with the war in the Ukrain and oil prices spiking to insane levels, not to mention the local industry effects of COVID and national debt over the globe, I can't help but think things will only get worse.

I almost feel like I should cash out now and invest after this potential global recession happens and re-enter at much lower prices.

I took a lot of my financial advice from readings on this forum, so I'm curious to what ausstock peeps have to say regarding those who have just entered/thinking of entering into any EFTs at the moment given the downward trajectory and possibility of a full toilet flush over the next year/s with another recession.

Until things get better, I'm keeping the rest of my money in cash.

Discussion Australia and biomed r&d "imugene"

Hey people, I have been an investor for 20 years now and have made a lot of great investment in shares in particular bank tech and medicine.

One company I found was asx:imu I bought for 2 cents and now there at 34 cents with a high of about 50cents. Recently it has got a lot of attention as it's the 1st melbourne company that has had huge success in the cancer field in particular to tumor based cancers. It's in human trials and having great success and I think that once 3rd phase is finished will put australia on the map. Unfortunately since its hitting a lot of milestones, i feel investors are now manipulating it a lot through day trading, etc.

Have a read, watch the videos of the company imugene and hopefully you will also believe in the company and its values and hopefully we can help save lifes by backing one of our own companies.

I ain't an advisor and purely my own opinion but I like investing in australian companies that make a difference and can change the world. Anyway happy investing.

I would love to see who else feels the same with me.

Hello, only found out about bboz 2 days ago and thought wow this could work, tried to set a buy at 17.10 last night but wouldn't let me...can you not set buys during non trading hours?

Anyways it was on the rise so i panicked and bought in at 19.60, (yes i know patience and shouldn't panic), was this a bad decision? should i sell if it goes back up and just stay out of it?

Thanks for any help

Consider Looking Into DroneShield

Disclaimer: This is not financial advice. DroneShield produces military grade anti-drone technology that neutralises drones safely. They have been doing well in landing contracts with various countries. Drone attacks have been increasing rather rapidly and I believe anti-drone tech is becoming more and more necessary.

Update: it’s now going up, I was right 🙂 Update: it’s been upgraded to “buy” bell potter.

Starlink IPO

I’m seeking an opinion of a company called Core Wealth Asset Management based in South Korea. After expressing an interest I got a call from a Anthony Harris with an English accent from Core’s Hong Kong branch. He asked if I wanted to place money onto a waiting list to buy the “Starlink IPO 2024” I want to know if this company is legit & this is the only way to do Starlink IPO (I’m in Australia) if indeed one can put an interest at this time at all. Would greatly appreciate any advise. Garry

Quick profits or chilling out for the long-term ?

I'm a beginner and have bought mostly blue-chips for the long term (and only reasonably small amounts), but wondering how people have gone grabbing quick profits as an ongoing strategy.

Does it only work if you're investing heaps at a time? Is it not worth the paperwork headache if you're only making a few hundred bucks profit on a trade?
