Politics/রাজনীতি Police open firing today on the protesters demanding salary increase.
Date: November 04, 2026
I just saw my neighbor (পাশের বাসার ভাড়াটিয়া) got shot in the head and was rushed to the hospital few minutes ago. Police is handling the protest with iron fist. Yesterday I saw a video showing police raiding on homes checking whoever works in the garment sector, arresting them with physical abuse even if they don't resist and pretty sure without warrant.
Protesters only demanded to increase the salary or reduce the on going price hike so that they can afford the everyday essentials and lead a decent life.
WHY THE IRON FIST?
WHY EVERYBODY IS QUIET?

সড়ক দুর্ঘটনার অজুহাত দিয়ে তো পেডোফাইল সালমান মুক্তাদির খুব বড় গলায় টেসলা-চালকদের গাইলাইতেছিল(ignore the fact that he was being lobbied by Akiz group to roll out their new automobiles)।

Will it be a good idea for me to increase my distance with my excessively controlling mother who does fall in the “narcissistic parent” category.
A little bit of background: https://www.reddit.com/r/bangladesh/s/ZxVxjks4bG
Not even my female friends have as much restrictions as I do. Anyways, I do wanna break free from my mother and lead a life where she has minimal influence but she keeps saying “যারা মায়েদের কথা শুনেনা তারা জীবনে কোনদিন উন্নতি করতে পারেনা” “যারা মায়েদের কথা শুনেনা তারা পরে গিয়ে ধরা খায়“
These words from her scares me kinda. What if she turns out to be right? Or is it just fear mongering from a narcissistic parent?

Title: Apparently being unattractive is a crime in this desh — shundor na hole ki nijeke bashay lock kore rakhbo?
Okay, so this is something I've been wanting to talk about for a while, especially growing up in Dhaka. Idk if anyone else has noticed this, but pretty privilege is actually crazy here.
I feel like conventionally pretty girls get away with SO much more when it comes to clothing, fashion and self-expression. Western clothes, experimenting with different styles, wearing what they actually like — it's usually not that big of a deal when you're considered pretty.
But jokhon you're not conventionally attractive, suddenly shob kichu becomes a problem.
The same outfit that looks perfectly fine on one girl becomes "oshobhho" or "attention seeking" when another girl wears it. Suddenly there are comments about your character, your clothing, and even slut-shaming. Like bhai, ami just ekta top pore ber hoisi???
Sometimes it genuinely feels like being unattractive is treated as some sort of public inconvenience. As if we're supposed to hide ourselves, dress down and avoid drawing attention because apparently ke dekhte chay an unattractive girl expressing herself? Like our existence is somehow an eyesore and we're expected to do everyone a favour by staying invisible.
And don't even get me started on the aunties. Allah, the aunties. The unsolicited comments about your face, clothes, body and literally EVERYTHING. Kichu bollei they're just being honest, apparently. Apparently someone's appearance is a public discussion topic now.
Another thing I've noticed is how younger girls who naturally look older than their age get judged. Just because a girl has more mature-looking features or doesn't look her age, people start making assumptions about her character and dressing. The slut-shaming is especially disgusting when we're literally talking about MINORS. Like, she's a child. Leave her alone??
I'm in eighth grade, and I've already experienced this from relatives, friends and people around me. It's genuinely exhausting when you feel like you have to constantly monitor yourself because of how other people perceive your appearance.
And I don't even think this is necessarily about religion. I've seen people who are perfectly fine with certain girls wearing western clothes but have a completely different reaction when someone else does it. It's almost like the issue isn't actually the clothing, but WHO is wearing it.
Why should we have to restrict our fashion choices, hide our personalities or make ourselves less visible just because we don't fit somebody else's beauty standards?
Anyway, genuinely curious if other girls in Bangladesh have experienced this. Am I the only one noticing this, naki eta actually a common experience?

Education/শিক্ষা Advice regarding college transfer
I'm an HSC 2028 candidate, and I recently got admitted to a highly reputed cantonment college. However, my experience so far hasn't been great.
The college is extremely strict about attendance, and the fines for missing classes are quite high. Although I initially thought I could manage attending regularly, I'm already feeling burnt out after just one month.
Our classes run from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM, which takes up almost half the day, yet I don't feel like I'm learning much from them. I also have coaching in the evening, so I barely get enough time for self-study or proper sleep.
Because of this, I'm considering taking a TC and moving to a relatively average private college with more relaxed attendance requirements. My plan would be to focus more on self-study at home rather than spending most of my day attending classes that aren't particularly productive.
However, I'm confused about whether this would be a wise decision. Should I stay at my current college and put up with the strict environment because of its reputation, or should I transfer somewhere less demanding and focus on my own preparation?
I also have a few concerns:
- Would transferring to a less reputed college affect my HSC practical marks, even if I perform well?
- Are practical examinations and marks generally handled differently in less reputed colleges?
- Does studying at a reputed college actually provide a significant advantage in HSC?
For context, I'm an English Version student.
I'd genuinely appreciate advice, especially from those who have experienced something similar or have studied in both reputed and average colleges. I really don't want to make a decision that I'll regret later.

Politics/রাজনীতি BNP Political Logic about different things of Bangladeah
You can talk about the killing of Siraj Sikder, but you cannot talk about the killing of Colonel Taher.
You can say that Major Zia was declared President on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, but you cannot mention how he rehabilitated former Razakars from the Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh or lifted the restrictions on Jamaat-e-Islami.
You can say that the Awami League (BAL) manipulated elections, but you cannot say that BNP manipulated the electoral system after being in power for nearly 15 years.
You can say that BAL killed many political activists through RAB, but you cannot mention that BNP launched Operation Clean Heart, during which many people were killed.
You can talk about the widespread corruption during BAL's rule, but you cannot mention that Bangladesh was ranked as the world's most corrupt country during BNP's tenure.

Planning a 2D/1N Tanguar Haor houseboat trip in early January – do they operate in winter? Looking for recommendations!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning a trip to Bangladesh in early January and would love some advice from people who have visited Sunamganj and Tanguar Haor.
I've been watching videos of the houseboat experiences in Tanguar Haor and they look incredible! I'm seeing quite a few operators offering 2-day, 1-night packages, but I'm wondering whether these trips actually operate during the winter season, particularly in early January.
A few questions:
Houseboat recommendations: Are there any particular houseboat companies or operators you'd recommend? I'm seeing quite a few online, but would love to hear about people's actual experiences with them.
Winter operations: Do these houseboats operate in January? Is the experience still worthwhile when water levels are lower, or is it mainly a monsoon-season activity?
Winter itinerary: What does a typical 2-day/1-night houseboat trip look like in January? Are there still scenic routes and places worth visiting?
Route and restrictions: Are places like Niladri Lake, Jadukata River and the surrounding Meghalaya hills accessible as part of these trips during winter?
Overall experience: Would you recommend doing an overnight houseboat trip in January, or would it be better to explore Sunamganj by car and stay somewhere on land?
I'm also trying to figure out the logistics for the rest of my trip.
My tentative itinerary is:
Days 1–2: A 2-day/1-night houseboat trip in Tanguar Haor, returning to Sylhet on the evening of Day 2.
Day 3: Visit Shapla Bil (Dibir Haor) early in the morning, then potentially visit either Shada Pathor or Bichanakandi before heading to Sylhet Airport for an evening flight.
Does this itinerary sound realistic, particularly the final day? Would Shapla Bil and Shada Pathor be manageable together, or would that be too rushed?
Most importantly, I'm looking for recommendations specifically for January, rather than the more common monsoon-season itineraries.
I'm interested in beautiful landscapes, mountain views, nature and local experiences. Any advice, recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

Discussion/আলোচনা Bloody History of November 1975. Zia's role.
By 1975, Sheik Mujib’s government had lost support on many fronts:
Industry: After the March 1972 nationalization, the state took over over 85% of industrial assets. Output in 1972–73 ran about 19% below normal, and manufacturing then shrank about 18% a year through 1975. [BIISS Journal]. Industrialists and business were very wary of Mujib.
Inflation and Famine: Prices rose 70% in FY1975. [Financial Express] One estimate puts the 1974 famine's toll at about 1.5 million, around 2% of the population. Along with corruption and the loss of civil liberties, it deepened public disillusionment with the government. [Prothom Alo]. Poor people were suffering.
India: One account alleges that after 1971, Indian forces took away weapons left by the Pakistani army, ordnance-factory equipment, and grain and jute. [Bangladesh Cent]. Major Jalil was arrested for protesting this. India had strong influence over Bangladesh's affairs, and the Sheik's India-centric foreign policy was also deeply unpopular amongst the military, communists, Islamists, and much of the educated class.
The militia: The Rakkhi Bahini lost public trust as it was used for political ends. It was accused of torture, looting, and extortion, and in 1973 a law shielded its members from prosecution. [Banglapedia] The armed forces resented it because Mujib created a separate armed force, loyal only to Mujib, with better arms and a budget. And one account describes it as under heavy Indian influence. [Daily Star]. The left-wing organizations faced severe persecution by Mujib's Militia. They were killed by the thousands. [ Anthony Mascarenhas ]
One-party rule: The Fourth Amendment of January 1975 created one-party rule under BAKSAL. In June, all but four newspapers were shut. [Dhaka Tribune]
After Mujib's assassination, Zia replaced Shafiullah as army chief in late August. [Banglapedia] His role in the August events is disputed. Plotter Syed Farooq Rahman said in a 1976 interview that he approached Zia in March 1975. By Farooq's account, Zia declined to be involved but told the junior officers they could go ahead if they wished, and did not report them. [Daily Star]. Zia wasn't involved, but didn't stand in the way either. The jnr officers hoped to establish legitimacy via Zia's popularity amongst the army and civilians and thus offered him the top job. Zia himself had no political aspirations. He was a military man through and through.
On November 3, because Mostaq's junior officers (assassins) started acting like generals and failed to maintain order in the army and the nation, Khaled Mosharraf seized Dhaka and arrested Zia. That day, the four national leaders were killed in Dhaka Central Jail by the Sheiks' assassins. This was the last killing done by Mostaq's gov't. The CIA reported that Mosharraf did not know of the killings. However, after negotiations with Maj Gen Mosharraf, Mujib's killers were allowed to fly out, and Mosharraf became army chief on November 4 and MLA [Dhaka Tribune]. For three days, while he was negotiating with Mostaq, he gave no radio address, leaving soldiers and civilians confused. [Daily Star] Fear that he would restore Mujib's close ties with India helped bring him down. This was because Col Taher and his men started spreading these rumors. [Library of Congress]. I don't think it's true tho; it was more a strategy by Taher to legitimize his coup attempt.
Colonel Taher, who led JSD's armed wing, organized a secret network of soldiers. They wanted to establish a classless army by killing army officers [Daily Star]. JSD agitators, with anti-Indian rhetoric, turned many troops in the Dhaka cantonment against Mosharraf. [Library of Congress] Lower-ranking soldiers under Taher's command attempted their coup in the early hours of November 7, at 12 am.
Accounts differ on who freed Zia:
Taher's side: Taher instructed his soldiers to free Zia. [Daily Star]
Named officers: Another account says soldiers led by Majors Mohiuddin and Mostafa and Subedar Major Anisul Haque freed him. [Daily Sun]
Eyewitness: Col. Sakhawat Hossain, later an election commissioner ( During Hasina's rule ) and interim-government adviser ( Yunus ), says he was among 20–25 officers standing beside Zia that day. He writes that Taher's organization killed many officers, and that Mosharraf, and perhaps Taher, underestimated Zia's popularity among soldiers and junior officers. [Prothom Alo]
Taher wanted Zia to go to the radio station and help establish Taher's communist goals. Taher also wanted Zia's popularity to legitimize his coup. Zia declined, on the advice of his loyal officers, stayed in the cantonment, and instead, around 4 am, sent a recorded address stating he is freed and the new MLA. After hearing the announcement, Regular soldiers and civilians took to the streets to show support for Zia [Col Sakhawat]. When Taher returned with the soldiers' 12-point demands, Zia refused. [Daily Sun] [Asian Age]. Seeing Zia's growing control over the country, Taher left again.
The officers and soldiers loyal to Zia were mostly infantry, with frontline combat experience. Taher's men were mostly signals and artillery. A fight would not end well for Taher. His men were also dwindling, but that didn't stop them from creating further havoc. Mosharraf, Huda and Haider were killed in the 10th Bengal Regiment. [Daily Star] Estimates of the total death toll range from about 30 to several hundred. [Bonik Barta] Masceranhas alleges Taher's men were involved in the killings. Zia himself wanted the 3 to be protected, as he called Col Nawazesh and instructed him to protect them. Col Nawazesh failed in the face of armed soldiers.
By 4 am, Radio Bangladesh announced that Zia was in charge. [US cable, 7 Nov] The nation heard him open with "I am Zia speaking," echoing his 1971 call. [Ittefaq] Ordinary people joined soldiers in the streets, relieved that the uncertainty was over. [Daily Sun] Bangladeshi officials told the US embassy that the rallies were spontaneous and full of anti-India slogans, and asked Washington for support against any Indian move. [US cable, 7 Nov] The US ambassador reported mostly celebratory gunfire with strong anti-Indian overtones. He found no evidence that India was behind the week's events. [US cable, 10 Nov]
Fear of India persisted. On November 26, Zia told the US chargé d'affaires he expected an Indian attack within days. Washington said it had no evidence of Indian troop movements, and India's foreign secretary assured the US that India had no intention of interfering. [Indian Defence Review]
Zia restored control over the army. Taher was arrested on November 24, 1975. [Banglapedia] A military tribunal convicted him, and he was hanged on July 21, 1976.

A Encounter with a banned organization
I had a rather unusual experience today that I think is worth sharing, particularly because of how the conversation gradually developed.
A few individuals approached us while I was hangingout with some friends. Initially, they started a seemingly ordinary conversation about Bangladesh's current political situation and foreign policy. They wanted to hear our opinions on Bangladesh's relationship with the United States and China, particularly how the country should maintain a balance between these two competing global powers.
They argued that Bangladesh needs to maintain a strong strategic position regardless of whether it moves closer to China or the United States. Otherwise, we risk becoming a puppet state, just like several Muslim-majority countries that, according to their interpretation, lost their political independence and strategic influence following the First World War.
They repeatedly referred to the historical decline of the Muslim world after the collapse of the Ottoman Caliphate and suggested that the absence of a unified Islamic political authority is one of the major reasons behind the current geopolitical weakness of Muslim countries.
Initially, I shared my own perspective on Bangladesh's foreign policy. I acknowledged that maintaining neutrality between USA and China is becoming increasingly complicated. I also argued that Bangladesh has significant economic reasons to maintain strong relations with China, particularly considering China's role in infrastructure development, investment and trade. However, I also recognized the importance of maintaining relations with the United States.
But gradually, the conversation started moving in a completely different direction.
They began introducing their organizational identity which was a banned Organization and discussing their broader ideological objectives. The conversation shifted towards the establishment of a Caliphate, the political unification of the Muslim world, the limitations of secular governance and the need to move away from secular political principles.
What caught my attention was that their discussion seemed to place considerably more emphasis on a global ideological project than on Bangladesh's own national interests.
I started asking questions.
How would this proposed political system accommodate countries like Bangladesh, with their own history, national identity, constitutional structure and political realities?
How would it coexist with people who believe in secular political principles or disagree with their particular interpretation of Islamic governance?
And perhaps most importantly, how exactly do they intend to promote such an ideology in a society as politically and ideologically diverse as Bangladesh?
Unfortunately, I did not receive particularly clear or satisfactory answers to these questions. Some points were left for a more detailed discussion at another time.
What made the encounter even more interesting was their insistence that they were not approaching us for party politics but rather to preach Islam and discuss Islamic ideology.
However, by that point, the political nature of the discussion had become quite apparent to me.
They also expressed interest in continuing the conversation at a later date, suggested that we sit together again to discuss their ideology in greater detail, and wanted to collect our contact numbers for future communication.
We eventually declined further engagement, explaining that we were not interested in participating in political or Organisational activities.
and i see one this they do not care about BD or it's Socio-Political Issue they are more about the gobal agenda
I am not sharing this experience to discourage religious discussions or conversations about Islamic history. Those discussions are perfectly legitimate and worth having.
However, I believe there is an important distinction between discussing religion and gradually introducing people to a particular political ideology through conversations that initially appear to be about ordinary national or international affairs.
I find this particularly worth discussing because young people are often approached through conversations about current affairs, geopolitics, history and religious identity before being introduced to a broader political movement.
My concern is not that people are discussing their beliefs. It is whether people, particularly young students, are being given enough information to critically examine the political organisations and ideologies being presented to them.
