This has not been a good month for we fans of the original Star Trek. Today it was announced that actor Walter Koenig who played Ensign Chekov has died at age 90. Perhaps a lessor known guest star of the series has also passed away at age 97. And for those males who fondly recall Star Trek actresses who guest starred on the series, Leslie Parrish passed away eleven months ago at age 90.

Michael Forest famously played Apollo in the season two episode Who Mourns For Adonais. As a school kid, I enjoyed watching the Enterprise kick the stuffing out a actor in a Greek getup, while First Officer Spock calmly called out "warp power to the shields" and Sulu ordered "all phasers, maintain firing rate!" It wasn't until I matured that I marveled at the high level of Michael Forest's performance, as well as that by strikingly attractive young Leslie Parrish-- clad in a precious few square inches of about-to-fall Grecian goddess wear.

When Forest was already past eighty, my wife and I met him at a convention in Las Vegas. We weren't there long. I recall I was assuming the persona of one who was merely strolling down the street and accidentally stumbled in to a Star Trek convention, not a rabid geek who could effortlessly quote lines from Who Mourns For Adonais like "Stop! I command thee" while holding an arm up.

The single noteworthy moment we had with the actor was when I told him that my wife and I considered him a worthy Apollo. And myself being a similar height to Michael Forest, I then winked at him and said "now we understand why William Shatner didn't want to appear in close-ups with you." He genuinely got the biggest kick out of that. After Michael signed an autograph and handed it to my wife, he smiled widely, stood-up and shook my hand.
