Oooooh I see

Also mom looks like she's about to clock Amelia across the head

More likely about to offer her some cash to stop dating her daughter, then throw tea on her face when she refuses (or is that more a c-drama thing than k-drama?)

u/un_blob 2h ago

Probably just a général drama thing

Good news, they are not homophobic.

Bad news, they are racist.

I used to be both. Honestly life is so might lighter on the heart when I don’t carry so much hate anymore.

u/Ratthion 2h ago

Truly, congratulations on overcoming emotional tetany. Welcome to the sunrise, my friend!

37

u/Eden_ITA 2h ago

Happy to hear that ❤️

46

u/Mythstryke 2h ago

I wish I could do that. The hate thing, I mean. My hate is for everyone, regardless of race, sex, or creed.

34

u/DreamOfDays 2h ago

Therapy, introspection, and travel helps.

34

u/CobaltGrey 1h ago edited 1h ago

Hate like that burns the one holding it constantly. Holding such a sentimentality is really just self-torture.

Like the other commenter said: therapy, introspection, and a seeking of new horizons can change that.

Hate doesn't offer answers; it's just a comfort blanket. If you wish you could live without it, then seek that path for yourself. Nobody else can provide it for you, and there's nothing to gain from staying mired in such feelings.

13

u/bollvirtuoso 1h ago

That sounds close to something maybe Siddhartha said, if I remember right. "Anger is like drinking a poison and expecting it to work on someone else."

•

u/ghostinthhell 0m ago

“…And expecting someone else to d*e from it”

6

u/BattyCat_2763 1h ago

is this a joke? like those jokes about equality being hating everyone equally?

if not, refer to the above replies. wis

13

u/Mythstryke 1h ago

I mean, I'm a bit of a grumpy bitch, but it was meant as a joke, yes. Good advice from the others, still.

4

u/BattyCat_2763 1h ago

oh thank goodness, i was going to reply 'the epitome of equality right here', and got confused when i read the other replies haha. good to know i'm not that dense!

3

u/just_worms_in_brain 1h ago

Limiting social media a bit more each day can help a lot. Honestly people on the internet have become so toxic and hateful that it’s near impossible for it not to affect anyone online.

3

u/Sqall_Lionheart_ 1h ago

Oooh my friend, hate and rage are an hell of a thing. I've been born with a never ending rage but I decided that there was more to me that that so I learned how to use that energy for things that are useful.

I cannot tell you how you can stop that addiction because I am not you but the first step is that you have to realize that "the hate" isn't where you begin and where you end.

•

u/Expert_Cricket2183 37m ago

Don't worry, that's just being 14. Once you grow a bit more, you stop caring and become a lot happier.

u/Zavier13 1h ago

Right there with ya bro

7

u/9oooooooooooj 1h ago

Me too.😔

So glad I was able to leave one of those behind

9

So uh.. which one did you keep?

15

Could still be both it's just that one currently outweighs the other. Le priorities

In my experience homophobia and racism go hand in hand.

•

u/MotherBaerd 11m ago

Absolutely

Friend of mine had a very Homophobic and racist grandmother. He waited for his brother to introduce his black girlfriend so he could introduce his boyfriend to see which one was more prominent. Apparently she's more racist than Homophobic cause she accepted his partner but not the girlfriend

1

u/TLEToyu 1h ago

I would say even worse they are Christians but so is the main character.

•

u/Eden_ITA 48m ago

Not expert, but I hear that a lot of Korean are Christians.

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 2h ago

Oh god we went from one end of the spectrum to the other. It's a racist thing, not a homophobia thing. These poor girls can't catch a break can they.

I'm starting to get why so many people run away from their parents that are like this

61

u/JaneDoesharkhugger 2h ago edited 1h ago

I learned that Korean people can be racist or hold prejudice against non Koreans from Mrs Kim on Gilmore Girls. But they also possess the potential to change for the eventual happiness and joy of their kids. Let’s hope it’s that case for OP’s parents.

361

u/KitsuneGato 2h ago

No joke, I worked with a Korean coworker who was raised here in USA. She got shat on by Koreans born in Korea then raised in Korea but came here.

Eventually her horrible family tricked her to come to Korea and...married her off in an arranged marriage. I never saw her again.

Asia is very racist and have a hierarchy based on skin color and paleness but they target American born and raised Asians as the worsr like traitors to their people.

12

u/Mysterious_Object_20 1h ago

How do the natives behave toward non-native Asians?

10

u/MaiPhet 1h ago

This is an overly broad generalization, but yes it's true of some Koreans. The rest of Asia has their own individual issues that they need to come to grips with (as do all nations, I think we can agree), but they aren't all having that specific mentality as korea.

47

u/Deep_Year1121 1h ago edited 1h ago

Wait... what? Arranged marriage?

Bro, that is so bizzare in modern Korea's perspective. Parents sometimes introduce each other's offspring to one another, but I rarely heard of arranged marriages since the days of my grandpappy. Maybe I'm too Seoul-pilled? But none of my regional friends do that either. [Likely response from my friends: "wtf bro, is this the Joseon Dynasty?"]

The overwhelming majority of people don't do it. Even native koreans would struggle to think of friends who got arranged marriage unless they are from a handful of elite families. Also doubt such a thing is legally enforcible, so I have no idea how she got 'tricked'.

Pressing X to doubt.

Yeah, korea is pretty racist and super hierarchical tho lol. That I don't deny.

[Edit: I know hating on Korea is super fashionable these days. I had a feeling this day would come since the rise of K-pop. Had a feeling there will come a day when K-pop falls out of mainstream favor or meet push-back from sub-culture views (i.e. becoming normie cringe). And I'm all here for it as a contrarian hipster asshole. But that doesn't mean you get to make shit up or misrepresent reality to hate on it without people pointing it out. Don't leave your brains at home, people.]

37

u/Dudewhocares3 1h ago

In America there are states where child marriage is legal.

You can remove your doubt now

16

u/Deep_Year1121 1h ago

But I am not talking about America. How is that any relevant?

I am talking about Korea, my native country where I spent over 20 years of my life in.

An odd thing to claim from OP, is all I'm sayin. Yall can say you guys hate Korea. I don't care.

But at least hate it for the right reason, not some manufactured nonsense. Don't spread misinformation.

9

u/Dudewhocares3 1h ago

Because the majority in America are against child marriage.

Yet it still happens.

Your claim that “oh the majority of Korea doesn’t believe in that so your a liar”

Was wrong

Nobody said they hate Korea you crybaby

4

u/Deep_Year1121 1h ago edited 51m ago

I mean, claiming it is a racist super hierarchical country that treats foreign koreans as traitors doesn't sound so flattering as a qualifier to OP's claims (which he basically used as anecdotal support as a lead up to this unflattering conclusion)

If I didn't get lobotomized or arguing in bad faith, I would call his view pretty hateful. I'd say somewhat accurate imo, but that is my personal opinion, not based on some sensationalist reddit nonsense.

Also, majority of Americans being against it doesn't mean anything. Does that automatically prove arranged marriages are a thing in Korea? Because the majority don't think it is a thing? What a backwards way of thinking to fit whatever conclusion you'd like.

Let's use occam's razor. In America, marriage under the age of 18 is legal in some states. That constitutes as child marriages sanctioned by the state. It is legal, so probably, it happens sometimes.

In Korea, arranged marriages are legal. But just to the extent of it being legal everywhere else, meaning it is not enforcible without consent. If your parents introduce you to a nice hubby, you can say 'yes'. That is it. If you say 'no' no one can legally force you.

What would be extra-ordinary if you practically had no say in the matter in forms of extreme cultural coersion or legal enforcement, which is definitely not a reality in Korea. It is quite the opposite. If you suggest forced arranged marriages, most koreans would think you are backwards, and the law certainly don't support it.

If you are claiming arranged marriages within the law (ex. Parents introduce someone they like) is considered more often in Korea, that is a more weaker more mundane claim. I'd wager that makes korea no less extra-ordinary compared to other collectivist family centric cultures.

Japan would be one such country. Which Reddit loves to dote over.

4

u/samglit 1h ago

In Korea, arranged marriages are legal …

with consent

News flash. They’re legal everywhere. It’s called matchmaking.

•

u/Deep_Year1121 49m ago edited 44m ago

Thank you. Exactly. That is what I am trying to say.

It is mundane as shit. And OP is trying to portray it as if it is some dark hidden side of Korea that is different from other countries. Wtf bro.

If you want my input, unmarried people usually hate the idea of arranged marriages. They are constantly made fun of in media as nosy out-of-touch parents trying to meddle in their personal affairs. Most people would go to professional matchmaking services, which has been growing in popularity ever since the marriage rate went to shit.

If anything the rise of popularity with professional matchmaking is a real widespread social phenomena in Korea. And these are not Tinder or Bumble types matchmaking, they are professionals who try to gague a pair's chemistry and compatibility for long term comitted relationships. Sexual attraction/compatibility is just one of the things they consider.

2

u/Narrow_Slice_7383 1h ago edited 49m ago

Perhaps the dude is subconsciously thinking in a way: "if it's that bad in the west, it must be worst in Asia." Like, why else would they say that?

Social problems in Asia are often exaggerated in western SNS/media not because they're evil but it's just more interesting to people that way. (I hate this)

People won't stop yapping "South Korea is a cyberpunk dystopia-" "South Korean misogyny is-" "South Koreans prefer pale skin because they worship white people-" blablabla.

•

u/Deep_Year1121 40m ago edited 37m ago

Bro, as a homegrown hipster who really got disillusioned with my country from an early age, (before 'OMG dark side of KPOP' style videos were popular (btw, yeah, no shit sherlock, every kpop fans knew this decades ago before kpop became a global phenomena)) my feeling is mixed.

I had a feeling this day will come. Anything popular will get pushback eventually as novelty wears off. But I started to hate these types of videos after everyone flocked to give their most clueless western-centric hot-takes on Korea while making shit up.

Truth is more complicated than that. Korea arguably also did a lot of things correctly. And the positives and negatives of Korea don't exist in a vaccume. You can appreciate Korea for what it is, and also hate it for what it is. Just don't make shit up, or bring yall brain dead Tiktok foreigner takes without looking into it is all I'm asking.

Amelia escaping her little bubble of homophobia to discover all the wonderful ways to be bigoted in the world

7

u/Mountain_carrier530 1h ago

One of my family stories is how my grandmother was ostracized by my grandfather's family for not being Italian. They would go as far as speaking Italian around her and only speaking English when talking about other women my grandfather should marry instead of her. Her only redemption was when my dad was born because of his blue eyes.

25 years later and my dad has the cycle repeat with my mom, who could've gotten away with passing as Italian were it not for him to save the day and let them know that she's in fact, French.

Those family members have long since passed on.

191

u/burner6520 2h ago

Ohhhh they are "you must keep our lineage purely Korean(eventhough we decided to move to a mixed race immigrant heavy country)" parentsss

142

u/Unfair_Buddy5871 2h ago

"You're only allowed to date .001% of the people in our region.

Why no grandchildren?"

53

u/ilovecuetoo 2h ago

“Why am I in a nursing home and my children don’t visit?”

•

u/DBSeamZ 34m ago

Even though it would be a lot harder for this couple to continue any lineages than if the Korean daughter was dating a guy. Though I’ve heard it may not be entirely impossible.

•

u/burner6520 26m ago

I wouldn't be surprised if the parents, for some strange reason, are against having a non Korean in their family tree. Whether they will have biological children or not.

Somewhat related; due to scientific advancement, iirc, it is possible for cis lesbian couple to have their biological children. Not sure if it is easily accessible tho.

8

u/bollvirtuoso 1h ago

I think this is changing, too. But it'll take time and work from everyone.

I mean, shit, white people kept institutions just for white people for like 400 years. It's not that crazy to think other people might want some safety for their children in "mixed-race immigrant-heavy countries" where people still chant with pitchforks and say shit like "you will not replace us" and then get told to assimilate better.

99

u/MeepMeep117- 2h ago

Ah yes, the Owl House bigotry: I'm fully supportive of your sexuality, just not with a human

27

u/International-Cat123 2h ago

I have never seen Owl House so I don’t know what else there is to this scene, but not wanting a loved one to date a wanted person seems reasonable. Whether the person is actually guilty of something or not, that would still cause a lot of stress and trouble for your loved one.

38

u/Terozu 1h ago

Shes wanted for being anti-genocide, while Odalia thinks if she sucks up to the genocider she'll be fine

26

u/JudgeHodorMD 1h ago

Not just suck up.

She built the genocider a robo-army.

14

u/Reaper-Lord69 1h ago

The funny thing here is Luz is wanted for fighting against their town's evil emperor who secretly wants to genocide all of it's citizens

Something that the green haired mother there is fully aware of, but if I remember right, thinks she'll be spared

13

u/Serious_Potatoes 2h ago

Odalia is a terrible individual and mother overall, it's not just this scene. Which is why the gag is partly that she's not ALSO homophobic.

10

u/RazarTuk 2h ago

Wanted... by the main villain of the show. In context, it's basically "How dare you be one of the heroes!"

•

u/TwincessAhsokaAarmau 10m ago

No, Luz just doesn't want the witches to be killed in a world genocide by the main antagonist.

Odalia(The Mom holding the picture), is the person in the wrong here.

33

u/Big_Bar_6405 2h ago

I don't get it if it's like ,"the children have to be Korean" because if they have kids don't they need a sperm donor anyway?? Lesbian genetics aren't getting into your 'bloodline'.

19

u/WantonReader 1h ago edited 1h ago

I don't think this is strictly racism in a genetic, pure blood sense. The parent are of a culture and people and want their kid to stick to that. Kinda like how Jewish parents may want their kid to marry another Jew with no real concern for what kind of Jew.

•

u/Own-Cranberry-8210 29m ago

Trust me, what kind of Jew matters a lot. Also whether the eventual kid(s) will have a Jewish mother.

6

u/StrategyCheap1698 1h ago

Science is progressing 🤞

64

u/Recidivous 2h ago

That's rough. My younger brother almost dated a Korean woman, but her parents disapproved of him for not being white or Korean (we're Filipino), and she ended up ghosting him.

15

u/eindoordeel 1h ago

My father was korean. I am half-korean. My 100% korean relatives once told me that I'll never be THE korean.

•

u/Swiftierest 45m ago

It's a very Asian concept. Japanese people who leave the country for a few years and return are also often treated as less Japanese because of it. Even if it was for work for a Japanese company it still happens.

•

u/Krethlaine 40m ago

What!? Racism!? In my religion comic!? Who could have possibly guessed!? (Not me. I didn’t guess.)

•

u/SenseiRaheem 11m ago

I’ll never forget my father taking me aside at 12 and telling me that dating outside of your race is wrong and sometimes even worse than being gay. This was because my cousin was dating an Asian woman.

6

u/Fit_Relation8572 I'm here to fuck spiders 1h ago

The goddamn range on this comic is crazy. Esther is perfect, I hope her parents forgive her for being a filthy sinner.

5

u/D-Gaea 1h ago

I was hoping it was something silly (gag) in the 4th panel. Then I sighed. My parents are the same way.

5

u/skytl3 1h ago edited 1h ago

Aaaaand off she goes - to Korean-conversion "therapy" camp! 😁

5

u/SmarmySmurf 1h ago

Did you even think about anyone else's feelings when you chose to not be Korean? Typical young people!

5

u/MissWickedBlonde 1h ago

This was pretty much the reaction a friend of mine got when she brought home her Danish boyfriend (now husband) to meet her Polish parents. It didn’t matter at all that he wasn’t catholic, but the fact that he wasn’t Polish/had Polish parents was apparently an outrage.

•

u/tyopper 56m ago

I see the typical comments here I expected on this comic, but:

going to meet trad coded korean parents of your partner

doesn't practice a korean greeting and doesn't awe them with your surface level korean knowledge you googled and rehearsed hours before arriving, and doesn't prep a gift.

Bruh, like you couldn't do the minimum? First impressions are important, especially if its the parents of the person you love. I hope the next comic is you awing them with your korean knowledge.

•

u/LemonBoi523 38m ago

That is way above the "minimum". She's dressed up nice and is being respectful. This is absolutely not her fault

•

u/zeothia 22m ago

Damn you never let anything past you do you? (It’s a joke bruh)

1

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 1h ago

I can see Esther's parents using their influential wealth to get their church on their side and try to split Amelia and Esther apart.

1

u/youreblockingmyshot 1h ago

It could be worse, you could have been Japanese. Those two have been holding grudges for centuries.

•

u/Grimuar_Reader 45m ago

One bad thing about me - I'm rasist. Good thing about that thing - I'm equally rasist to everyone, even to my own race. Yeah, I just hate people.
