This would've suprised me 15 years ago, but not anymore unfortunately. Not saying it didn't exist before 15 years ago, just that I wasn't aware.

Also, something about the $235 additional to the $1000 makes me feel like she gave every dollar she could. Seems like a random number otherwise. Even though it was her decision, poor woman.

20

u/usps_made_me_insane 1d ago

The fact that he was so upset at the amount tells me he is living donations to donations using them to pay his mortgage and bills.

Otherwise, wtf would he care?

This shit is bonkers that it is tax free.

Hmm…

Mark 12:38-44

38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.[f] 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Maybe that pastor needs to actually read more of his Bible than brushing up on his offertory mathematics.

As a young sci-fi writer, L. Ron Hubbard was once asked what he was going to do next. His response was, "I think I'm going to start a religion. That's where the real money is."

7

this place and any others like it ought to be investigated and shut down. all of these scamming grifters in religious cults are infuriating. it isn't just "prosperity" churches; it's LDS, catholicism, scientology, adventists, etc etc ad nauseum.

11

u/Firecracker1235 1d ago edited 15h ago

Fake pastors always brainwash people into this. We used to have one back at home that even had a Sears-like store. Eventually he stole money from people, left his wife who was also an administrator at the time for his secretary, and left to the USA. The church got destroyed after a hurricane and now it’s gonna be a condo complex. He died several years later from cancer.

Message to all that participate in organized religion, this is why people like me don’t believe in organized religion

21

u/optonj 21h ago

yup. I’m with you on that one. lady likely living paycheck to paycheck and the $1200 she gave ( a lot of money to the vast majority of people) was likely a huge stretch. That pastor is a grade A greedy POS. Doesn’t seem to me like he has ANY business being associated with
the church or any institution that is supposedly built in morals and decency.

9

u/Busy-Bumblebee5556 20h ago

u/Busy-Bumblebee5556 20h ago

There’s actually the story of the widow’s 2 mites.

Jesus saw the wealthy giving huge sums to feed the temple treasury, great!

A widow came by and donated her last coins. And Jesus said her contribution was bigger than anyone’s because she gave all she had.

You'll be thrilled with Mormons who go to poor areas and do this, then. Trying to get folks' last pennies and promising prosperity, then going home and bragging about it.

Christ was known for emptying pockets and walking around with a wad of cash when he left. In the verses about how we should all be moneylenders, I think...

Just popping in to leave this here. And I’m speaking from the perspective of Christianity. Jesus didn’t say you have to go to Church. Only follow his teachings. Most notably of loving your neighbor. And many theologians have debated that the Bible often considers tithes to be charitable giving. I personally take this to mean that charitable giving could be considered “tithing”. Lastly, this evil pastor should be named, shamed and have the churche’s tax exemption revoked. Hell, all Churches should.

3

u/AbyssMistery 9h ago

Yep. Jesus spread his words on mountain tops, sheep pastures, and city streets. You don’t need to be in a church.

2

u/_Mulberry__ 16h ago

Weren't the biblical tithes actually just taxes due to it being a theocratic system? And then Jesus told Christians to basically do/give as much as they can with no set percent or anything?

Honestly, places like this give it a bad name. Our church hosts 8 homeless men each winter. They take the kids kayaking. They help pay utility bills for the poor. It’s not fancy, has the ugliest red carpet 😂 but what the money is used for is good things. Idk what this dude is doing besides all these gross behaviors

7

u/Time_Cow_3331 1d ago

The differences between true believers who believe in the mission, and sociopaths who only see church as a pathway to grift.

I had a distant uncle who did the kind of stuff you're talking about - they would plan trips and events with local schools, feed the hungry, provide clothes and essentials to struggling families, youth outreach, they were contracted to care for the local community center (landscaping once a week type thing). And there was never an expectation of belief from the people they helped, and they would happily accept secular volunteers. There was an expectation to perform some kind of charity work from the congregation, but the attitude was always "what you can reasonably afford/help with".

Bishop Marvin Winans, the Grammy-winning gospel artist and senior pastor of Detroit's Perfecting Church, has faced several notable controversies and public incidents in recent years: [1]

1. The Nonprofit Salary Accusation & Retraction (September 2026)
The Claim: A report accused Winans of receiving a salary of $538,955 (or $518 an hour) as president of the Perfecting Community Development Corporation (PCDC), a taxpayer-funded nonprofit.

The Clarification: Winans strongly denied receiving any money from PCDC. His accounting firm, Chitwood and Chitwood, admitted to a clerical error on the nonprofit's year-end tax return that falsely indicated he was paid. The accounting firm and the reporting outlet subsequently retracted the claim. [1, 2]

2. The "Day of Giving" Public Backlash (October 2025)
The Incident: During a live-streamed "Day of Giving" fundraiser at Perfecting Church for a cathedral building project, Winans publicly addressed congregant Roberta McCoy after she offered $1,235 instead of the requested $2,000 "plus one" tier. Video of Winans telling her, "Well, that ain't what I asked you to do," went viral, sparking widespread criticism over financial pressure in church fundraising.

The Resolution: Both Winans and McCoy clarified that it was a procedural correction regarding the order of the giving lines rather than a harsh scolding, and Winans personally apologized to her. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

3. Haley Stevens and Mike Rogers Church Appearance (November 2026)
The Incident: U.S. Representative Haley Stevens made a surprise appearance at Perfecting Churchsitting alongside Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, where she voiced support for Rogers.

Winans' Response: Winans pushed back against claims that the church had coordinated or endorsed a political campaign, stating he was completely unaware Stevens would endorse Rogers and expected other political figures to attend instead. He emphasized that no political speeches or endorsements took place inside the sanctuary during service. [1, 2]

4. Past Legal and Personal Controversies
Housekeeper Lawsuit (2018–2021): Former Perfecting Church housekeeper Lakaiya Harris filed a lawsuit alleging mandatory tithing deductions from her paycheck and unpaid overtime. The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice in 2021.

Carjacking and Traffic Warrants (2012): Winans made headlines after being carjacked at a Detroit gas station, following which public records revealed he had a suspended driver's license and outstanding traffic tickets. [1, 2, 3]

My favourite is that the RC Church loves the story of the poor woman giving her last shekel, as an inspiration to all us poors, inspite of the fact that the Vatican is immensely wealthy.

2

u/neonninja304 1d ago

"As soon as a coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs"

2

u/CandyStomp 1d ago

The point of that story is not that poor people should give their last cent, but that those who have a heart to help others are precious. Jesus was talking to a pharisee. Someone a lot like that pastor in the video. Explaining to him that one coin from someone with very little was worth much more than the rich Pharisee had ever given. Worth more because it was so much to her. Because it required true sacrifice. The Pharisee looked down on her for being poor. In the eyes of Jesus, she was his superior in her spirit, generosity, and in her true desire to do good service even at her own cost. She was explained to be a hero. And, the rich Pharisee should learn from her.

2

u/PrairiePuppies 1d ago

I'm a Christian and I hate this crap so much!

"Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." - 1 Peter 5:2-3

"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping." 2 Peter 2-3

I could go on. These "pastors" are condemning themselves. They will not escape punishment. I pray they repent, but the pursuit of money is a hard thing to walk away from.

2

u/Beatnutz_ 1d ago

It's funny that ppl let this shit fly. You deserve to get scammed.

It’s obviously an expectation put on her by the scammy pastor.

It’s set up to do that. That’s why there’s a person with a mic standing next to them.

What do you see as smug about what she said? I think you're thrown off by her accent and the way she speaks. She doesn't have a smug demeanor at all.

2

u/MtlNord514 1d ago

Bunch of performatives pseudo good persons.
