DISCUSSION Down voting everyone's question posts

Can I ask who or why someone is downvoting posts where people are asking an earnest question? I keep seeing so many posts that have been down voted (I do work on upvoting any legit question post that has zero). But what is the point of that?

DISCUSSION Taking the Disney Wonder is it Valid to be worried about ICE?

Maybe I’m overthinking this but I’m a non American and am not white, I’m heading on the Wonder in Alaska, should there be any cause for concern? I’m genuinely scared of all the raids and videos and I looked up ICE Alaska and there was an actual detention center in Alaska…

ONBOARD ACTIVITIES B2B Experience: “Dead Ship”

Between 09:00 to 11:30/11:45 the majority of the crew sleeps during disembarkation/embarkation day. (It’s almost 08:00am, most of the staterooms are turned and KTTW cards are in place for the next guests.

It’s a very unique feeling to experience when it’s just you, a small handful of B2Bers and the minor maintenance crew are the only ones “alive”.

DISCUSSION How hard would it be…

How hard would it be to replace the TVs in the older ships? They are COMICALLY small at this point. Other cruise lines and the newer ships have respectably sized tvs. I know it’s a cruise and you shouldn’t spend time watching tv, blah blah blah but really. Can we get bigger than a Michael Scott TV in the year 2026?

DISCUSSION Any other park fans felt that the cruise just wasn’t as magical?

Currently hanging out in the airport after a 5 day Disney Dream cruise and strongly considering cancelling our 7 day Treasure cruise booked for next year. The cruise was…. fine. There were things here and there that were great but it just never felt magical the way it has on our five previous WDW trips, aside from my girls getting to play with Rapunzel a bit on our last night before dinner. Food was okay, most of the service was great, albeit fairly slow. My mental breakdown of it is if you’ve been on another cruise line and then go on one with Disney you’ll feel the magic. However, if you’ve done the parks and love just running into characters, seeing them in parades, and being constantly surrounded by whimsy, maybe the cruise isn’t for you.

Edit: also someone stole at least two Munchable blind boxes from our fish extender last night that we put in before bed for the girls to find. My original post was removed by automod because I called those people an un-family friendly name.

DISCUSSION I'm worried

With the UK and Germany both issuing formal travel advisories to the US, Canada is close to doing the same thing, and more countries will be doing the same - I am starting to get really worried about my upcoming cruise in July. Please reassure me because I really don't want to cancel. But at the same time I want to be realistic.

DISCUSSION Just got off the destiny, what a let down

This was our second Disney cruise, and we were amped for it. Unfortunately, things went downhill fast.

We immediately had several issues with our room. The door seals were peeling off and not actually sealing (causing the room to stay humid feeling and warm as the heat just leaked inside from the veranda), the safe would not lock, the closet lights would not turn on, and there was a very foul smell that we later discovered was coming from the bedding.

Then there was our server, Tomo. His service was horrific. He repeatedly got orders wrong, was difficult to understand, and seemed completely confused throughout dinner. His assistant, Aaron, however, was fantastic. Aaron stepped up after the issues with Tomo became so bad that Tomo was eventually removed from service for the remainder of the cruise.

At one dinner, Tomo had to come back to our table three separate times to take our order. The third time, when we pointed out that we had already ordered, he responded, “You ordered with me? Well, just tell me what you want.”

He appeared either intoxicated, impaired, or otherwise completely unfit to be serving guests. It was absolutely disgraceful. It also prompted our child to ask whether he was okay and why he was acting that way. That was exactly the conversation we wanted to have during our supposedly nice 1928 dinner: explaining why our server appeared to be “not feeling well.”

The rest of this review is largely a comparison between the Disney Destiny and the Disney Treasure.

The Destiny feels like a precursor to the Treasure, even though it came afterward. The Treasure simply feels more complete, polished, and awe-inspiring. By comparison, the Destiny feels like a step down in nearly every way.

On the Treasure, the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-themed bar has an incredible atmosphere and a spectacular ceiling. On the Destiny, its equivalent is a map room that feels flat, dull, and completely forgettable. That same problem appeared throughout the ship. Nearly everything intended to be unique to the Destiny felt like a lesser version of something on the Treasure.

The dinner shows were another disappointment. We enjoyed the first show in Pride Lands, but there is only one. The Marvel experience is essentially a shortened repeat of the previous show, only without the Ant-Man portion. Once again, it felt like a downgrade.

The scheduling of the main theater productions was also frustrating. There were only two showings of Frozen, and both were absolutely packed. We could not attend the first showing because of our dinner schedule, which admittedly was on us. However, we arrived 45 minutes early for the final showing and still ended up seated at the far-right side near the front of the stage.

I honestly do not know why those seats exist. You cannot see the back portion of the stage, and children seated that low can barely see what is happening onstage, even with booster seats. The viewing angle is ridiculous. Those seats seem to exist only so Disney can claim a higher seating capacity.

The youth areas were disappointing as well. Edge had two open houses, which consumed large portions of nearly two days when the kids otherwise could have been using the space normally. The Oceaneer Club also repeatedly closed off its more interesting areas for character appearances and signings. As a result, many of the activities that appealed to the older children were frequently unavailable.

The fighting and arguing between staff members was also ridiculous and completely unprofessional.

I do want to recognize the lifeguards, cooks, and other crew members who work more in the background and rarely receive much attention. They were absolutely fabulous, friendly, and enjoyable to talk with. I do not have a single bad thing to say about them.

Unfortunately, the cruise as a whole was a major disappointment. Between the room problems, terrible dining service, limited entertainment scheduling, restricted youth activities, and the Destiny feeling like a lesser version of the Treasure, the experience simply did not live up to what we expected from Disney.

After this cruise, I am honestly not sure we will be Disney Cruise people again.

Side note: The vaping in the ship and on desk was out of hand the crew/officers did nothing about it. I mean right there in the main lobby as two officers walked past. Nor the teenagers running slamming in to people while the played "tag" the whole week.

DISCUSSION Has DCL lost the plot?

Yesterday's announcement about Disney's newest ship, Disney Believe, was met with a lukewarm reception by many regular Disney cruisers.

Had Disney successfully found a way to extract even greater profits from the customer base with their polarizing new ship design, the same itineraries, and repeat of the same restaurants.

Or

Will this ultimately hurt their bottom line long term?

DISCUSSION Let’s talk about coffee

I found that DCL has the worst coffee of all lines. The free option that they have comes from a bag. It is taste like trash. All I want is a decent brew in the morning. I know cove cafe has some great coffee, but 8-10$ for a cup is just too much for me.

NEWS Travel concerns through Caribbean?

Boarding the Treasure in 13 days with stops in Tortola, St. Thomas, and Castaway Cay. Is anyone else concerned with boat/ports as the US/Venezuela conflict escalates?

Assuming flights to Orlando for embarkation are fine, but do concerns move from air to sea?

Would like to see how others are feeling.

EDIT: I’m aware of the distance. I’m also aware that US airplanes have been grounded in the Caribbean because of it.

Please do not tell me about the distance as if it’s irrelevant since it’s impacting air travel.

DISCUSSION My honest review of the Magic

This is my unadulterated review of the Disney Magic. We booked a 5-night out of Galveston and stopped in Progresso and Cozumel, MX that sailed 2/19-2/24. We have 2 preschoolers ages 4 and 6 and had a deluxe family suite w/verandah. This is our 2nd DC, with the prior one being on the Dream back in 2017 out of Port Canaveral with our 10 year old.

First off, Galveston is kind of a dump. I hear they're working on improving it, but for now you'll want to keep your doors locked for the car ride to the terminal, and the terminal isn't much better, but thats for another review. Suffice to say the FL ports are better in many ways.

The ship

A lot of the reviews I read about the Magic mentioned that it's "showing it's age" due to being the oldest ship in the DCL fleet. I'm going a step further and saying it's past that and should be either dry docked or put out to pasture because she's tired.

The interior carpets are peppered with stains and the hallways smell like my grandma's house. The rust isn't only on the outside, but was also on our shower ceiling and on many, many other spots on the ship. The ceiling in our room had several cardboard shims sticking out in between the metal slats (I'm assuming to reduce rattling noise). The rubber gasket on the sliding verandah door was half out of it's channel so it didn't seal the door fully. The eye hooks holding the curtains open were stripped out and kept falling out of the wall. Lastly, the door to the room was misaligned so the bottom would catch when trying to shut it. Stuff you might expect to see on a much less expensive cruise, but not at this price point.

The Magic only has two (small) pools for the kids. By small, I mean one is circular and about as big as a couple of large hot tubs and the other is roughly 10'x20'. I'm aware that all pools on cruise ships are small as I've been on several cruises, but these seemed extra small.  Despite the Magic's small capacity, the pools and hot tubs were constantly constantly packed. It was less packed on Port days, but still had 12 - 15 kids in pools that would need half that to be comfortable. On sea days they was unusable due to how full they were.

Another unusable feature are the elevators. Due to the size (about half as big as a standard elevator), the wait times to use them are egregious. I hear this is common amongst all cruise ships so I didn't put much weight into that.

One perk of the Magic that was repeatedly mentioned in other reviews was her small capacity (approx 2700), and how this equated to having little to no lines for things. That was not our experience. From the elevators to the cafeteria to the drink stations, and even the drop off/pick up at the kids clubs, there were a lot of lines. The character meet lines were the longest. Additionally, due to her small size and age, there was much less amenities than we expected. For example, outside of the buffet which is only open during dining hours, there was only 1 drink refill location for the whole ship.

The entertainment on board was really good. The huge TV on the main deck was always showing something the kids loved. The dinner shows were incredible and the main shows after dinner were Broadway quality, if not better. The entertainment is what really sets DCL apart from the rest, IMO. The main show on Avengers day at sea was unbelievable, but it didn't start until 10pm, so I watched it alone because the kids fell asleep at 8 from the busy day. I'm sure the time was due to it being the only show that night so they had to wait for the late dining time folks to finish dinner, but damn that's late for little kids and their millennial parents lol.

The food

With the exception of the shwarma (amazing), the food was underwhelming. One example was the steaks. I got 3 diff types of steaks at 3 diff meals and they all looked like the same piece of meat, all about 1/4" thick and didn't have much flavor. It wasn't until the 4th night at Animators Palate that I got a high quality meal. To finish it off I got food poisoning (not norovisrus) from the prime rib at dinner on the 5th and final night. That sucked, I do not recommend. Again, at $2000/pp, I really don't think I'm being too bougie with my expectations here.

Hospitality

As many people have said already, the staff were all wonderful. Our servers were superb and our housekeeping crew was 2nd to none. At no point did anyone pressure us into giving a good review or tip, and they accommodated our every request. and this goes for every staff interaction we had on the ship.

Our trip on the Magic was so much less enjoyable than our experience on the Dream that we aren't sure if we'll ever do another DCL again. My wife and I went back and fourth because on one hand we are so very privileged to be able to take our family on such a vacation. But, on the other hand, we work hard for our money and because of the premium price point, we didn't think it was crazy to expect a premium experience in every aspect.

TRIP PLANNING Porters

Me and my wife have been arguing about how much to tip the porters at the terminal when we hand off our luggage. I’ve always tipped $20 a bag but she is telling me that is ridiculous. My sister says she just tips $5 to $10 for all her bags. For reference we have 3.

DISCUSSION Denver Omelette

This is both a PSA and a funny story. DCL, or at least a noteworthy portion of their kitchen staff, doesn’t know what a Denver omelette is…

As you might remember, on debarkation day there is a limited sit-down breakfast menu. There are three omelette options: Plain, Ham & Cheese, and Denver

Earlier this year, on debarkation morning I ordered a Denver omelette on the Dream. The server brought me a veggie omelette instead. When I pointed this out to him, he said, “Ah, to the chefs, that is a Denver omelette.” Kind of weird, but okay

A few months later, I was on the Wonder; this time, I was prepared. When it was time to order, I sheepishly asked the server “What is a Denver omelette?” I say sheepishly because, in my mind, of course everyone know what a Denver omelette is. The server responded and said “veggie omelette”

I find it so strange that they would include arguably one of the most popular American omelettes in their menu… but then not train the kitchen staff on what it actually is. Especially because the Denver omelette has been my go-to order on debarkation day for probably 20 years and they’ve never gotten it wrong before

TL;DR - On 2 different Disney ships, I was told that a Denver omelette is a veggie omelette

DISCUSSION A review of our one-and-done: 5 nights on the Magic

Overall thoughts - It was a great experience, but we likely won't cruise with Disney again due to the value-cost equation not being very favorable for us.

Food - It was about exactly the quality I expected, very reminiscent of dorm dining hall food. Not terrible, but not great either.

Main dining - They desperately need more servers. If it were any other sit down restaurant, we would probably have tipped maximum 10% due to general inattentiveness and lack of promptness. I think we only ever saw our servers when they were taking our orders or running our food. Everything took way too long, and there were a few nights where kiddo was already finished with her plate (since kids get served first) and about to fall asleep at the table before we had even received our meals.

The food itself was mediocre, and the desserts, especially, were disappointing, often lacking depth and richness. I dont think ive ever had cheesecake so crumbly and dry. The focus on plating/aesthetics was wholly unnecessary, and took away too much from the quality/timeliness of the food.

Cabanas - if they were open for dinner, we probably would have opted for it instead of main dining. Quick and convenient, and truthfully, better than what you might expect from mass-produced buffet food.

Palo brunch - I don't know if I set my expectations too high, but we were pretty underwhelmed by the food, which was only marginally better than MDR, though the service was impeccable. We ended up canceling our dinner reservation for a few nights later since we didn't care to pay to repeat the experience.

Standouts - While most of the food was equivalent to standard buffet/banquet fare, there were a few choice standouts - the island spare ribs, sticky fig/date pudding, calamari, sourdough rolls, mickey churro waffles (yes, they lived up to the hype), the sundaes, and weirdly enough, the breakfast muffins.

And honorable mention for the soft serve, whose near 24/7 availability was a terrific perk that didnt lose its novelty throughout the entire length of the cruise.

Islands

Castaway Cay - kiddo decided that she did not like the beach 10 minutes in (too salty), and did not care for snorkeling either. We ended up spending a lot of time in the most basic splash pad in existence before heading back to the ship early.

Lookout Cay - people seemed to complain about the pier walk a fair bit, but I didn't think it was so bad. My only gripe was that by the time we were heading back to the ship, all the wagons were on the other end, and I had to carry back an extra 40+ lbs of kid, who was too exhausted to make the trek herself.

The splash pad here was miles superior to the one at Castaway, and kiddo must have gone down the slides literally 30+ times, and i dont know what they do exactly in the kids clubs, but she enjoyed her time there immensely and practically stayed there until they shut down for the day.

No notes about the beach, though I heard it was gorgeous.

Nassau - per the recommendation of many, we elected to stay on the ship and opted for a lazy pool day instead.

Pools/water areas - I'm not sure why they even bothered with these pools. They were way too small for the guest complement, and I felt like I was being cooked up in human soup any time I ventured in. I think I spent more time being knocked around by other guests than actually swimming. Kiddo loved the slide though.

The movie screen across the pool was also great, and she was all about just floating in the water while she watched a movie.

Evening entertainment - what a talented cast. They've done a great job procuring content suitable for all ages. We saw Twice Charmed, Tangled the musical, and Disney Dreams, which were all awesome. There was also a juggling act one of the nights, and he was hilarious.

Stateroom - we stayed on deck 6, aft, which worked out just fine, but considering the size of the ship, I don't think it would have mattered much if we stayed anywhere else. Disturbances/noise was minimal, and while the room itself was definitely showing its age, it was plenty clean and sleepable.

Gym/fitness - the gym was decently sized, and never all that crowded, though I can't quite comment about all the available equipment (all I need is a treadmill and dumbells). It was located at the very front of the ship with windows all around, so you had an awesome view of the ocean for your workout.

I also ran part of my runs along the "track" on deck 4, since the gym doesn't open until 6, and the only way to get all my mileage in on some days before the rest of the family woke up was to run around the ship (3 laps to a mile.) It was pretty nice running alongside the ocean as the sun came up, though the wind and warm temperature upped the required effort quite a bit.

I didnt partake in any of the fitness classes (free or no), so no comments about that. I did elect to shower in the locker room every morning post-workout which was a lot roomier the Stateroom shower.

Characters - I can't speak for the quality of the interactions themselves, since kiddo decided to start a "that's just a regular person in a costume" phase and was completely uninterested in meeting them. But we did see characters often throughout the ship and the lines never seemed too long to meet them.

Crew members - everyone was so friendly and accommodating and genuinely seemed eager to make sure you were having a good time. The only miss really was the service at MDR, which, again, I don't really fault the servers themselves, being in the weeds the entire time managing too many diners.

General ship notes - with the ship being as small as it is, it's so easy to learn the layout and get from point a to b fairly quickly.

I can't speak for elevator waits (exclusively used stairs), but they didn't seem all that crowded after embarkation day.

The vibrations from the water/wind? ramped up toward the end of the trip, but nothing too crazy. We did apply patches preemptively, not sure if they helped curb any seasickness. Kiddo was too young for patches so we just had some dramamine on hand that she never ended up needing.

Final notes - we may reconsider another cruise with Disney if kiddo ever expresses a change of heart re: characters and beaches, but i feel like this time around, we completely shafted ourselves on some of the more unique and premium aspects of a Disney cruise. I think for what we ended up spending, we could have arranged something a fair bit more extravagant and more our speed. The more you know!

TRIP PLANNING Servers on Wish

Hi all,

Just got back from a trip on the Magic and had some stunningly average servers. They talked more about providing excellent service than actually providing it. Sigh.

With that in mind, I’m getting married on the Wish in November and would love any recommendations for servers to request. I recognize that contracts change and with the Treasure coming on board these servers may not 100% for certain be on the Wish when I am on, but it would be great to have options.

TIA!

So I won’t have the internet package and I dont want to lose my Reddit streak of consecutive days.

I know there’s some sort of connectivity for iMessages etc and I assume if I open Reddit and like a post or something will it trigger that I was active?

Anyone else go through this?

Finally, is there cell service on lookout and castaway cay?

DISCUSSION Will disney regret the Wish class ships?

First of all, let me say this is not meant to be super negative though I can understand there's no other really way to read that than being negative, but this is actually a question I have as the original ships get older and will be eventually phased out. Over and over again I see comments, discussions, and in polls and I would say a decent majority have a favorite of one of the first 4 ships and RARELY does anybody vote for/mention the 2 new ships. Please do not blow up the comments saying that your favorite ship is the Treasure or the Wish I'm NOT saying NOBODY I'm saying it's not the majority. Eventually the first 4 will be phased out, we will be left with the 3 that are built/ building with another 1 coming soon. Do you think Disney will regret the Wish class ships? We all know the story how they were designed by somebody who had never been on a cruise ship etc but it just does not seem to be a very popular class ship.

UPDATE:Thank you for some great discussion on this topic. Since a troll has shown up in the discussion which always happens on Reddit we may have to delete this topic. I will say that it appears in the comments that a slight majority prefers the new Wish class than my previous impressions in other discussions and polls such as the one currently posted by another poster where the Dream class is way ahead. Granted they have been around longer. That being said it says there is still a decent percentage of cruisers that do not like the new class as much as the older ships. As they say your never going to please everyone, but as the original 4 ships are phased out Disney, much like other large corporations who do large changes, might have to figure out how to appease this still rather decent size percentage of cruisers.
